Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called a general election for February 8, seeking a fresh mandate for her government’s spending plans and a major defence build-up.
Speaking as she announced the vote, Takaichi said the election would allow voters to decide on her economic agenda and security strategy, including increased public spending and expanded defence capabilities amid rising regional tensions.
The move comes as Japan faces growing pressure to strengthen its military posture and boost defence budgets, while also addressing economic challenges and public finances. Takaichi said a renewed mandate would provide political backing to push ahead with reforms and long-term policy goals.
Opposition parties criticised the timing of the election, accusing the government of calling an early vote to secure political advantage before controversial measures are debated in parliament.
