Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has emerged from Sunday’s snap election with a massive mandate. Her ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secured 316 of 465 seats in the lower house — the most ever won by a single party in Japan’s postwar history.

This supermajority grants Takaichi a clear path to pursue her security agenda. It brings back to the forefront her remarks in November, when she told Japan’s parliament that a crisis in Taiwan would pose an existential threat to Japan and could trigger a military response.

With Takaichi’s power now firmly cemented, some experts believe Japan-Taiwan ties are set to strengthen further as Tokyo shifts toward a more proactive regional defense posture.
