Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s historic visit to China has laid the groundwork for what experts are calling a “new era” in China-Canada relations.

Speaking to CGTN, former Canadian ambassador to China Dominic Barton described the trip as highly significant, highlighting the creation of new frameworks and working groups to address trade, investment, and people-to-people ties. The visit — the first by a Canadian prime minister in eight years — included high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and signals renewed momentum after years of strained relations.

From trade tensions and EV investment to education, tourism, and cultural exchange, Barton says both sides now show real conviction to move forward together despite ongoing challenges.

Is this the start of a reset in China-Canada relations?

00:00I think it's very significant.
00:05I think it's sort of the, if you will, the beginning of an establishment of a new era in that long relationship.
00:14And I think there were some sort of broad framework setting things that were put in place, as well as some specific agreements.
00:23So I think this is a big deal.
00:26I think it's at two levels.
00:31I think the first is that there's this framework, as I said, an approach of how to be able to work through things, the opportunities and trade and investment, the people-to-people ties that President Xi spoke about and that Prime Minister Carney also believes in, you know, education, culture, sports, tourism.
00:53And then I think that sort of establishes the working groups and the sort of the forums to be able to work through opportunities, but also issues.
01:03And I think then specifically, secondly, there were, you know, there's progress made on some of the trade tensions that are there.
01:10And I think these are first steps, but they're, it's more than I, what I expected in a, in a, in a first sort of meeting like this.
01:17I thought the first part was key, but so I think it's, this is very significant.
01:40There's more to be done on trade.
01:44There's, you know, the, the sort of the counter veiling tariffs on each side more broadly is what it relates to agriculture on the, the Chinese side, the EVs, areas of, you know, investment, how that's going to, you know, work, work through.
02:01I think the, there will always be challenges and issues that come up in any good relationship.
02:07So I think being able to have the frameworks and the working groups in place to be able to deal with that will be very good.
02:15But you, you think about this, it was only seven or eight months ago, you know, the Prime Minister Carney met with the Premier, the Premier of China, you know, in, at the UN, I think it was.
02:24And then, you know, the meetings that happened in Seoul, so I think there's, there's real conviction, it is what it feels like to me on both sides to, you know, set the set up for a new era.
02:54And, you know, at the UN with the UK, I enjoy the commercial place.
03:00There's a lot of views of which many people think about this feature, especially if there are about the Westerns I and the European lovers, the European literature, but they're rather about involving Vil её más at the UN
