00:00For the past eight years, residents of Unity Trace in Sangre Grande say consistent access to water has remained out of reach.
00:08They claim the Water and Sewage Authority, WASA, is fully aware of the problem, but little has been done to fix it.
00:15According to residents, multiple leaks along the pipeline are preventing water from reaching their homes,
00:21even when supplies restored to surrounding areas.
00:24This year, repeated reports, including intervention from a councillor, have failed to bring relief.
00:30The reason why we're not getting water, what's right behind you?
00:34There's a leak, there's a leak right there, and lower down.
00:37So all the leaks, WASA, are not fixing, so even if the water comes, it's not coming in your bank.
00:41They need to fix the leak.
00:43And we did talk to the councillor, he did take down our name, and he said he mentioned it, WASA, but it's up to them to do the rest.
00:51Another resident, Naveen Mohamed, says years of complaints to elected officials have produced nothing but promises.
00:59For the past many years that I know, these MPs and them always have me in a promised land.
01:05And don't matter how much time you go by them, either they tell you to check me back or go by this office, or can't see this one.
01:12And all the time is a constant base of living our life by promise.
01:17With a no-reliable supply, residents say they are forced to depend on rainwater or purchase truck-borne water at a significant cost.
01:28Rainwater or you pay a truck and you get water?
01:31And how much do you just have to pay the truck to bring water?
01:33$400 for 4,000 gallons.
01:36Some of them, you apply in county to get a tank of water, and if you're lucky to get it, you might have to wait a little while before you get it.
01:42You have to constantly be messaging them or going in and requesting a tank of water and all these things.
01:49Because some of us don't have really plenty of tank.
01:52Like me now, I have three tanks.
01:53I use too far toilet.
01:56My front tank, if rain and fall well, that is basically it.
02:00Mohammed believes those in positions of influence are able to access water easily, while ordinary residents continue to struggle.
02:09We need people who have the authority to help people like us.
02:14And if we don't get them kind of people to help we, we have to struggle to make it.
02:19He adds that politicians often return with promises at election time, only for conditions to remain unchanged afterward.
02:39Time for voting and things.
02:42They're coming.
02:43Eh, don't worry.
02:46We will get water.
02:47We will fix the road.
02:48We will do this.
02:48We will do that.
02:49Only vote we in.
02:51And stupid we now.
02:52I'm being honest.
02:53Stupid we.
02:54We will put them in power.
02:55And when they're in power, nothing for us.
02:57Residents are now calling on Wassa to urgently address the leaking infrastructure and restore consistent water supply to the community.
03:04TV6 reached out to Wassa's communications manager regarding the complaints at UnityTrace.
03:10She has acknowledged the concerns and say the matter will be looked into.
03:15Charlotte Kisto, TV6 News.
