Baku prepares for 2026 as World Sports Capital with packed international events calendar

Baku is preparing for its role as World Sports Capital 2026, hosting major international events, expanding sports facilities and increasing participation across elite sport, youth programmes and social inclusion initiatives.

00:00We have more than 200 sport facilities built for the recent years in the capital plus in the region.
00:12So in the capital we organized many multi-sport events plus different international events.
00:18So we have some legacy.
00:20In May we will organize the sport accord event which is very well known in the sport field.
00:30The biggest sport business forum plus other European symposium will be in March in Baku.
00:37And of course Formula One event, other big sport events.
00:42We'll have world championships in judo, we'll have European championships in volleyball.
00:48In Sumo we'll have world championships plus first time we organized the European championships and World Cup final event in some winter sports.
01:00The number of the women participants increased from the last games.
01:07And this is a really very good number for us. It's around 40% of it.
01:12Last multi-sport events for us was Islamic Solidarity Games which recently happened in Saudi Arabia.
01:18And we see that many of our women athletes took the medals.
01:24Then we may say that in the sport fields we have more and more women sports managers.
01:30As well as of course coaches and judges.
01:34And of course one of the directions, this is social inclusion.
01:40Plus we have special Olympics which is also supporting.
01:46And Deflympia.
01:48And recently we took even the first medal for Azovijan in the last Deflympia Games.
01:54We're cooperating with the many international organizations.
02:00We organized many youth forums here in Azovijan.
02:04And our different cities were the youth capitals of the different organizations.
02:12The Lengkaran was the capital of the Turkish state countries.
02:16Shusha was announced the youth capital of the OIC organization.
02:24We organized it with ISESCO.
02:26This is a very good experience for our youth.
02:29Because every year we see from our events that more and more volunteers applying for these events.
02:38Many international organizations know us as well-organizers and partners.
02:48For that reason I think Baku was announced as the sport capital of the world.
