00:00:00Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:30Evening, the Premier League is back and Match of the Day is back.
00:00:54Now you may have seen and heard that there is a big change to the show this season
00:00:58and that is Wayne Rooney has joined us as a regular pundit.
00:01:03Some things don't change though, Alan is still here.
00:01:06And he is absolutely delighted, the Sunderlander first stop.
00:01:10Back in the top flight and at home to West Ham with Guy Mowbray.
00:01:15Eight years, three different sets of owners and ten changes of manager.
00:01:21A lot has happened since the last Premier League game on Wearside.
00:01:25And a lot has happened this summer.
00:01:26Ten new players signed and counting, with seven making their Sunderland debuts here today.
00:01:32Amongst them, goalkeeper Robin Roofs, record signing Habib Diara,
00:01:36and new club captain Granit Xhaka, back on these shores after two years at Bayer Leverkusen.
00:01:42West Ham, well they're kicking off a 14th top flight season in a row,
00:01:46and do so with two new arrivals in their team.
00:01:49Keeper Mads Hermanson brought in from Leicester,
00:01:51and Senegalese wing-back Elhaj Malik Jouf,
00:01:55whose pre-season performances promise a big season ahead.
00:02:00Before the start, a moment to pay tribute to Diogo Jota
00:02:04and his brother, Andre Silva, taken too soon.
00:02:08And this is Gerard Bowen, getting the ball under his spell,
00:02:24and getting away from the challenge, and he might get a shot in two.
00:02:27He does.
00:02:29West Ham's first corner, Robin Roofs' first save for Sunderland.
00:02:32And Gerard Bowen looking sharp from the off.
00:02:38He'd struggle to find a better atmosphere anywhere in the world this weekend
00:02:42than the Sunderland Stadium of Light.
00:02:46Diara in on goal!
00:02:49Really strong hand from Hermanson.
00:02:52Really good start to the game attacking-wise from both sets of players.
00:02:57Both goalkeepers in business.
00:02:58It's only Graham Plotter's 20th game as West Ham boss.
00:03:04Never really got going last season.
00:03:06And now he's had a whole summer to work on his style of play,
00:03:09getting used to the players.
00:03:11They getting used to him.
00:03:13Bowen.
00:03:15Playing it across to Fulcrogg.
00:03:17There's Jouf!
00:03:18Saved by Roofs with help from Ballard.
00:03:22Lovely take and turn from Gerard Bowen.
00:03:25The touch from Fulcrogg, pretty good too.
00:03:27And Jouf thought he scored.
00:03:29I don't think Roofs was getting there.
00:03:30Good job Ballard did.
00:03:33Last three meetings of the teams here have been drawn.
00:03:36The last couple both 2-2.
00:03:39Pull back.
00:03:40Beat the hands of the keeper Hermanson.
00:03:42But it beats the post on the follower.
00:03:45From Adingra.
00:03:45Looked a pretty presentable chance.
00:03:48It's a really well-timed run by Mayenda.
00:03:52Does really well to get there.
00:03:54And Adingra, well it was sort of a half attempt to control the ball
00:03:58and then a belated thought about putting it in the bottom corner.
00:04:01And Idris Labris will be thinking his team have done pretty much okay to this point.
00:04:10Adingra.
00:04:11Diara.
00:04:12Shoot is the cry.
00:04:13Diara might now.
00:04:17Always looked likely to be too high.
00:04:19And having only done it once or twice in the first half,
00:04:24now on a more regular basis,
00:04:26Sunderland are threatening the West Ham penalty area.
00:04:32Past the hour,
00:04:33and Sunderland starting to get themselves on top.
00:04:36The rest, eh?
00:04:42That's down for the corner and it's in!
00:04:47Mayenda with the Sunderland breakthrough!
00:04:57Have a listen to that!
00:05:02Scorer of the goal at Wembley!
00:05:04That kept Sunderland's hopes of a Premier League return alive!
00:05:11Now in its 50th game for the club,
00:05:14he scores the first goal of that return!
00:05:19Sunderland 1,
00:05:20West Ham 0.
00:05:27Pakitar,
00:05:28oh, Adingra will get there.
00:05:29Before Tadebo could.
00:05:30And he turns and
00:05:34tries to take on Tadebo for pace
00:05:36and wins a corner.
00:05:40And it looks as though the
00:05:42the winger signed from Brighton has got the message.
00:05:45You play to this crowd,
00:05:47boy will they play for you!
00:05:48Hermanson's coming for it
00:05:55and gets to it.
00:06:01Reinildo
00:06:02uses the space,
00:06:06now uses a Dingra.
00:06:07That's pretty handy!
00:06:09That's 2-0!
00:06:11That's Ballard!
00:06:12That might be 3 points!
00:06:21What a cross!
00:06:23What a header!
00:06:25What a return to the Premier League!
00:06:27This is turning out to be
00:06:28for Sunderland!
00:06:33Reinildo played his part,
00:06:34saw some space,
00:06:35moved into it.
00:06:36Look at that for a ball in!
00:06:38The Sunderland fans
00:06:40with longer memories,
00:06:42you're going back to the 90s!
00:06:43That's Nicky Somerville for Niall Quinn!
00:06:47Sunderland 2,
00:06:48West Ham 0.
00:06:56Wilson.
00:06:56fouled by Hume.
00:07:03Graham Potter,
00:07:04Bruno and Billy Reid
00:07:06working out
00:07:07when to play the next card
00:07:09and
00:07:09what that card should be.
00:07:13Roof's tipped it over the bar!
00:07:18Winning plenty of admirers on debut.
00:07:22Would have been an own goal,
00:07:24but for Roof's free actions.
00:07:26F**k it up.
00:07:32Wan-Bissaka
00:07:32and it's deflected behind.
00:07:34West Ham corner.
00:07:38There will be at least
00:07:39seven more minutes to play!
00:07:43And we'll just raise a few eyebrows
00:07:45and appeal hugely to West Ham fans
00:07:47as Roof spills the ball.
00:07:49No foul though.
00:07:52And another corner one.
00:07:54Well, if they get one in now,
00:07:56just hold on to your hats.
00:08:02Going for the long ball in.
00:08:04Alderete got his head to it.
00:08:05Now it's Talby.
00:08:10Talby up to Isidor.
00:08:12Isidor, who was all on his own.
00:08:14Isidor!
00:08:18Isidor!
00:08:22All over now!
00:08:27Oh, smiles Sunderland!
00:08:29A goal brilliantly finished.
00:08:33To finish this off as any sort of contest.
00:08:40West Ham were a tired-looking bunch there.
00:08:43How on earth did Wilson Isidor find himself with all that room?
00:08:46And it just dipped at the right time to deceive Matt Hermanson.
00:08:52A winning return to the Premier League.
00:08:55And then some for Sunderland.
00:08:57And then some for Sunderland.
00:09:00It'll be a good night on Wearside.
00:09:02It's an incredible start to the season for Sunderland.
00:09:07They've waited eight long years for this day.
00:09:09The fans will have come here today hoping, dreaming, maybe not even fully believing.
00:09:19They certainly didn't think it would go this well.
00:09:23Goals for Mayenda, Ballard and Isidor.
00:09:28Three who've come with them on the journey up from the Championship.
00:09:31If this is how it's going to be here all season, it's going to be one to remember for Sunderland fans.
00:09:39Sunderland 3, West Ham 0.
00:09:44Happy for the club, happy for the organisation, happy for the players and happy for our fans.
00:09:51Because this comeback in the Premier League with this connection we had in our stands today is really impressive.
00:09:58You have debuts for eight players today.
00:10:01Does it make it a little bit more special though that your three goal scorers were all players who helped you gain promotion last season?
00:10:07Yeah, it's important.
00:10:08It's important first of all because they showed that they can step up.
00:10:13We want to keep the same strength we used last season to get promoted.
00:10:18This togetherness, the way we defend together, this intensity in our game.
00:10:22And these players, I think, have this strength inside.
00:10:28The first goals are always important in the game and we played a decent away performance in the first half.
00:10:35But it's not too much comfort at the moment because the second half wasn't good enough.
00:10:40There wasn't too much in the game.
00:10:42It was a fine margins game.
00:10:43At the same time, the scoreline reflects poorly on us and we have to accept that.
00:10:47It's the first game of the season.
00:10:49The season's not won or lost in the first game.
00:10:51There's still 37 games left to go, but we know we have to be better and we have to change that.
00:10:57My feel was just we have to win the first game to be confident for the rest of the season.
00:11:01And we did it very well today.
00:11:03So that's it.
00:11:04And we need to keep going in that intensity.
00:11:07Well, I mean, great start for Sunderland.
00:11:11A lot of people, a lot of pundits have praised their transfer window business as they've brought, you know, players into double figures into the squad.
00:11:19But the proof was always going to be whether they could gel.
00:11:22Now, I know it's early days, but the signs are quite good.
00:11:25Yeah, I think the signs were excellent.
00:11:27I think they've obviously had a lot of players making their debut today.
00:11:31But I think the organisation of how they played, they played the exact same way last season and obviously managed to get promotion.
00:11:38So I know first hand of coming up games.
00:11:40I actually got one of my only wins.
00:11:43Get that in early, well done.
00:11:44Yeah, but I think if you see here, Diario was a huge threat all game and his run forward, his energy.
00:11:50There was a lot of energy about Sunderland in general all afternoon.
00:11:54But you see in the second half, they put the wide players a little bit wider, created a little bit more space in the midfield for Sunderland to go and attack West Ham.
00:12:03And West Ham struggled to deal with it.
00:12:06And then we see here, runs in behind.
00:12:08Should put the ball in the box a little bit earlier.
00:12:11He can, but he gets it in.
00:12:13It's a good chance and probably should do better to take the lead.
00:12:16But then this one here, again, West Ham's defence getting spread to you, getting forced out to the ball.
00:12:25Oh God, having to focus on the player out wide.
00:12:28And then again, we see here, runs in behind.
00:12:31Big gap in the middle of the West Ham defence.
00:12:34Always a threat, runs in behind.
00:12:36And then if he makes the right decision here and rolls it across, they get a tap in.
00:12:40So he makes the wrong decision, but they get a corner from him.
00:12:46And then, as you see here, Isidore making a great run, long run, in the last minute.
00:12:51I think it was the 97th minute of the game.
00:12:54Sunderland sat in and soaked up a lot of pressure.
00:12:56Kept that energy and a great substitution from the manager.
00:13:00Third goal of the game, seized the game off.
00:13:02And a fantastic start for Sunderland on the opening day.
00:13:04A promoter side didn't win until the 5th of October last season.
00:13:09Generally, do you think that is a blueprint that can work?
00:13:12Sit deep and counter-attack?
00:13:13I think it has to be.
00:13:15I think we've seen last season with the promoter teams coming up.
00:13:20And we've seen it with Burnley, in particular, under Vincent Kompany.
00:13:23And teams coming into the Premier League and trying to play and be expansive.
00:13:26And you just can't do that.
00:13:27The gap from Championship to Premier League is massive.
00:13:30And I think the way Sunderland played today shows that you can get results in this league
00:13:34if you're organised, you work hard and you stick together as a team.
00:13:36LaBrice highlighted the importance of those players who got them up last season,
00:13:40which we saw with the goal scorers.
00:13:42All three goal scorers, vitally important to them last season.
00:13:44Yeah, they was.
00:13:45And I think, you know, so many new players, but the players who were there helped them get
00:13:49into the Premier League last season, had a huge impact in the game this afternoon.
00:13:53And I think if you look here, Mayander, he stays, he occupies the defence, stays in the middle
00:13:58of the goal, which is really important.
00:14:00And the cross, it's a good cross, but he's got no right to score there.
00:14:04And I think just pure determination, willing to put his head on the end of the ball,
00:14:09gets a good contact, good header and a well-deserved goal to put them 1-0 up.
00:14:13And then I think Dan Ballard, I think I thought he was fantastic last season for Sunderland,
00:14:19but carried it on today in the first game of the season.
00:14:22As you see here, his goalkeeper's in trouble.
00:14:24It's a real big chance for West Ham, but he gets back, helps his goalkeeper out
00:14:28and makes a fantastic clearance of the land, which prevents West Ham from going 1-0 up.
00:14:33But then we see here he can do it in both boxes.
00:14:36We've seen him do this last season to get Sunderland into the final of the playoffs.
00:14:41Stays up, great cross in and a fantastic header.
00:14:45That's a great header, that, isn't it?
00:14:46So in the pre-programmed meeting, you were quite keen to talk West Ham rather than Sunderland.
00:14:53So if you were a West Ham fan, how concerned would you be this season?
00:14:59Yeah, I would be.
00:14:59I mean, that's Graham Potter's biggest defeat as West Ham manager.
00:15:03They haven't replaced Kudos.
00:15:05Two new players in the starting line-up today.
00:15:07Callum Wilson came on, but Bowen was their main threat, particularly in the first half.
00:15:13But the second half would be the one to worry about because once they conceded that first goal,
00:15:18they just folded like a pack of gods.
00:15:19There was no spark, was there?
00:15:19There was no spark, no energy, and there certainly was no reaction at all.
00:15:23And that would be the worrying thing already.
00:15:26Right.
00:15:27Pep Guardiola began his 10th season in charge of Manchester City with a visit to Wolves.
00:15:32That's at Molyneux for this one.
00:15:33Steve back.
00:15:36After finishing outside the top two for only the second time in his managerial career,
00:15:40Pep Guardiola begins his challenge of relighting Manchester City's fire.
00:15:45He'll do it today without Edison, who's not in the squad due to illness.
00:15:49So James Trafford, re-signed from Burnley in the summer, finally plays for the club.
00:15:53There are debuts for Ait Nouri against his former teammates and Reinders.
00:15:59Wolves have lost their opening day fixture in each of the last four seasons
00:16:03and have lost the likes of Kunja and Sarabia this summer.
00:16:06Only one new face starts.
00:16:08That's the Norwegian David Muller-Wolfer.
00:16:10Fer Lopez and John Arias are both substitutes.
00:16:13Well, prior to kick-off, Wolves will pay their own special tribute
00:16:21to their former hero, Diego Jota, and his brother, Andre Silva.
00:16:26The South Bank, full of colour, and after a rendition of a field of gold,
00:16:30Jota's favourite song follows a minute's applause.
00:16:34He knows it was the lowest points tally in his City tenure last season.
00:16:49They did finish strongly.
00:16:51No team took more points than City in the last ten Premier League games.
00:16:56In from Bernardo Silva.
00:17:00Knowing how long it was who made contact.
00:17:04I was frustrated, it wasn't better contact.
00:17:08It looked more shoulder than head, the first sighting it was.
00:17:14Well, we've reached the 18th minute.
00:17:16And there go Jota's old shirt number, number 18,
00:17:20that he used to wear in Wolves' goal.
00:17:22And that brings warm applause all round the stadium.
00:17:25And Bernardo Silva got goal side of Doherty.
00:17:35Haaland!
00:17:35Just felt he was always stretching a touch.
00:17:43He was hanging in the air.
00:17:46Just couldn't get the purchase on it.
00:17:48Doherty, fouled by Doherty.
00:17:58Quickly taken by the Irishman.
00:18:01Belgaard, who was first-hand 11.
00:18:06Strand-Larsen came in, Diaz with an excellent block.
00:18:10He looked sharp, Strand-Larsen.
00:18:13Free header!
00:18:15Offside.
00:18:15Marshall Manessi's joyous short-lived.
00:18:20Because Mark Perry's flag is up again.
00:18:25Yeah, it's not a close one.
00:18:28And he didn't need to be, really.
00:18:30They're certainly looking to improve their form at Marlenew.
00:18:34Only the bottom three had a worse home record last season.
00:18:42Reinders.
00:18:47Then trying to feed Rico Lewis.
00:18:50Haaland waiting!
00:18:52Anne Erling, Haaland scoring!
00:18:59A ninth career goal against Wolves.
00:19:02And Manchester City are in front.
00:19:08The 125th City goal.
00:19:12And the new boy Reinders played a huge part in it here.
00:19:16Lovely little ball to Lewis.
00:19:19And he put it on a play for Haaland.
00:19:22They're the ones he dreams of.
00:19:24Wolves nil.
00:19:25Manchester City won.
00:19:28Anne Erling Haaland scoring with his first touch of the ball.
00:19:32In almost 15 minutes in the game.
00:19:36And that was too much for Andre.
00:19:38And Wolves are in trouble here.
00:19:40Oscar Bob.
00:19:41Reinders.
00:19:43Can he get there?
00:19:44He can!
00:19:44And he can finish beautifully!
00:19:46A debut goal for the Dutchman in City Blue.
00:19:54A career-best 16 goals for Milan last season.
00:19:57And his first for Manchester City gives them a two-nil advantage.
00:20:05Two goals in less than four minutes.
00:20:09Now, suddenly, lit up the game for Manchester City.
00:20:12No changes from either side at half-time.
00:20:19And the hosts alter the scoreline.
00:20:22That's for Hoover to chase.
00:20:25That's a useful ball.
00:20:27Strand-Larsen!
00:20:27What a start to the second half that would have been for the hosts.
00:20:35Strand-Larsen just couldn't quite get the angle.
00:20:39Nicely taken again with Reinders.
00:20:56He's got it back from Oscar Bob.
00:20:58Haaland's waiting.
00:20:59Erling Haaland!
00:21:00Erling Haaland!
00:21:02Emphatic!
00:21:07And that combination again.
00:21:12Tajani Reinders, involved in two goals, has scored the other.
00:21:18Haaland at the double.
00:21:20With that sweeping finish.
00:21:23Past Jose Sarr.
00:21:273-0 Manchester City.
00:21:30And that now means that Erling Haaland has scored more Premier League goals against Wolves than any other opponent.
00:21:37He's into double figures on ten.
00:21:40They're sick of the sight of him.
00:21:44Reinders.
00:21:46He's gone for the return from Oscar Bob.
00:21:50In the penalty area at that moment.
00:21:53Picked up by Mahmush.
00:21:54Turkey.
00:21:55Oh!
00:21:56It's a debut goal for him as well.
00:21:57He's only been on the pitch just over seven minutes.
00:22:11A day ahead of his 22nd birthday.
00:22:15And he makes it 4-0.
00:22:20It's a dream entrance for the French international.
00:22:22And the new-look Manchester City lead Wolves by four goals to nil.
00:22:30And Wolves are heading for their heaviest defeat under Vitor Pereira.
00:22:38Does it get much better than that with new players, away from home, clean sheet?
00:22:45In terms of result, yeah.
00:22:46In terms of 15 seats.
00:22:48First half was really good.
00:22:49Second half was not good.
00:22:51But it's normal in this part of the season.
00:22:53We have to improve.
00:22:54We did things well done, in my opinion.
00:22:58We played with brave.
00:22:59We didn't win in the game just to defend.
00:23:03Because I don't believe in this kind of game.
00:23:05Every time we committed a mistake, they scored.
00:23:07Very happy with an assist and a goal.
00:23:09And a very good win.
00:23:11That's first of all.
00:23:12It's a great start.
00:23:13And yeah, we have to keep going now.
00:23:15Also, Cechi coming off the bench with a goal as well.
00:23:17There's a new energy about this Manchester City team.
00:23:19Yeah, I think you can see everyone in the team has so many qualities.
00:23:24And even if you start on a bench and come in the pitch, you can bring new things.
00:23:29And yeah, that's a good thing of our team.
00:23:32Well, if he continues this season like he did today, we're going to have some fun watching him.
00:23:36He was off the scale.
00:23:38He was absolutely sensational.
00:23:39It was almost the perfect midfield performance.
00:23:42And for his first league game, to stand out like he did today, it was an incredible game from him.
00:23:50I mean, everything that he did, whether it was reading the game, whether he was particularly impressive with actually running with and without the ball.
00:24:00There, this is a great example of it there, when you've got that much space and the way he just glides past the two players.
00:24:06And the way to pass into Rico Lewis, that isn't a bad pass either, by the way, into Erling Haaland for a simple tap-in.
00:24:13But he controlled the game at his pace.
00:24:15I said about running without the ball.
00:24:17This is what I mean.
00:24:17He's run 50 or 60 yards to get onto that.
00:24:20Then he doesn't let anyone down with a really cool finish.
00:24:24He's aware of everything around him, the space.
00:24:27But again, look, he passes the ball, but look what he does.
00:24:29An absolute nightmare to play against because someone that's always on the move and great at timing those runs for the opposition is very, very difficult.
00:24:39What about this touch?
00:24:40And again, running with the ball.
00:24:42People keeping up with him, obviously, but the way he gets in behind.
00:24:46But then the vision and the way to pass again, to put that into Erling Haaland's path, to run onto it and to hit it.
00:24:53Finding the space, again, the understanding with another new boy, Cherky.
00:24:58But then he plays that ball.
00:25:01And if it wasn't for the little touch here of Marmouche, he's actually in again and again running from inside his own half to get into that position.
00:25:09So 46 million, very, very impressive start from him and from Manchester this season.
00:25:16You can see how much he stood out with all those stats there.
00:25:19He really was impressive.
00:25:20As we saw earlier, Serie A midfielder of the year.
00:25:23And he got 15 goals in all comps from Milan last season.
00:25:26You don't want to go overboard too early, do you?
00:25:28But is he the Kevin De Bruyne-shaped hole?
00:25:31Is that what he's going to fill?
00:25:33Yeah, well, it looks like, certainly looks like on today's performance.
00:25:36And I think what really impressed me with Manchester today was the energy they played with.
00:25:40I think the last season, there was question marks about the energy and what they had in the team.
00:25:45But I think today they had some really good young players and really outworked Wolves throughout the game.
00:25:50He was a key part of that.
00:25:53I mentioned it a few times in the analysis run there, the way he ran with and without the ball.
00:25:58And when you're up against that, it's difficult to keep up.
00:26:01They kept on going and going and they just didn't have an answer for it.
00:26:05Very quickly, do you think that's a new philosophy then in that Guardiola team, that ball carry?
00:26:09Because we talk about systems and knocking it and I know Grealish would run with the ball from a slightly different position.
00:26:14You have to play to play strength.
00:26:15But is that a different sign you're seeing there?
00:26:18From him it is in that particular team, yeah.
00:26:20Because when someone's got that ability to do that, you have to let them free to do it.
00:26:25And he was brilliant at it today.
00:26:26They couldn't cope with him.
00:26:27Right, Thomas Frank's first league game in charge of Tottenham was at home to a Burnley side who considered just 16 goals in the whole of last season's promotion winning campaign.
00:26:36Jonathan Pearce is your commentator.
00:26:38A new home for one head coach, a home coming for the other.
00:26:42Thomas Frank might not be aware that none of Spurs' last eight managers have lost their first league game in charge.
00:26:48Scott Parker is only too aware of everything Tottenham.
00:26:51He spent two years as a Spurs player.
00:26:53£55 million summer signing Mohamed Koudas makes his Tottenham league debut as they make three changes from the Super Cup income grade Bergvall and Johnson.
00:27:02Kyle Walker returns to the club where he played 229 matches.
00:27:06There are also first league games at the promoted side for Dubravka and Hartman.
00:27:12And the referee Michael Oliver gets the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium season underway.
00:27:18Spurs in the lily-white and the blue kicking from right to left on an absolutely immaculate looking playing field.
00:27:27And the first attack is repelled by Kyle Walker's glancing header.
00:27:31Can they get the cross back in here?
00:27:32Spurs to the back post, Bergvall was in there.
00:27:35Danger straight away.
00:27:37It's Koudas who started on the right-hand side.
00:27:38Bergvall again, good start by Dubravka, bright start by Spurs.
00:27:41He had a terrific spell here, Scott Parker, very influential on the field and in the dressing room.
00:27:55And probably had his best England spell while he was a Spurs player.
00:28:01Decent cross in the middle, looking for Richarlison.
00:28:04And a fine, confident take again by Dubravka.
00:28:07That's the back in goalkeeper.
00:28:14Very experienced keeper, nearing 450 league games.
00:28:17He's held the ball longer than eight seconds.
00:28:20And that's the first time this season that that decision has been given at Premier League level, I think.
00:28:28He held the ball longer than eight seconds.
00:28:31And therefore, it's a corner kick for Spurs.
00:28:34Tottenham look for Koudas.
00:28:37Koudas away there by Hartman.
00:28:39Burnley's new left-back.
00:28:44Kind of sweeps it high towards Romero.
00:28:47Johnson.
00:28:48Burnley can't get out at the moment.
00:28:51Spence.
00:28:52It's all Tottenham early on.
00:29:01Tottenham look for Koudas.
00:29:03And tied it up at the back by Maxime Esterve.
00:29:08Koudas again.
00:29:11Challenge came in by Cullum, the Burnley captain.
00:29:14Here's Richarlison.
00:29:15Half a chance, Spurs lead.
00:29:171-0.
00:29:18It's been coming since kick-off.
00:29:21And Tottenham have their first goal of the season inside ten minutes.
00:29:26Far too much room for Richarlison.
00:29:28Worked hard for 72 minutes and the Super Cup in the week.
00:29:34And his positional sense paid off here.
00:29:37Burnley aren't tight enough.
00:29:38He just drifted away an extra yard to get away from Walker in the middle.
00:29:43And Ekdell, I think it was.
00:29:45Good finish.
00:29:48Tottenham lead, Burnley 1-0.
00:29:53Pulled all by Romero.
00:29:55He hasn't had a good half.
00:29:57So, backtracks.
00:29:58He's Josh Laurent.
00:30:00Now Walker up into attack.
00:30:01Too much weight on the ball.
00:30:03Porra has taken a real chance there.
00:30:05There is some contact between the players, say, the VAR.
00:30:10But the ball's way away from the coming together.
00:30:19Josh Laurent cuts it around the corner.
00:30:21Gray is well positioned.
00:30:23Spins the pass.
00:30:25Johnson pulls it back.
00:30:26Richarlison is blocked in there.
00:30:28Richarlison again.
00:30:29Just squeezed somehow white.
00:30:31Kudus follows up.
00:30:36It was a dangerous cross darting to that far post area.
00:30:39Richarlison so nearly had a second.
00:30:42There they are.
00:30:43Confirming that hit the chest of Maximus Dev.
00:30:46Almost low down by his side.
00:30:48No penalty then.
00:30:50And then Dubravka's left foot denied Richarlison.
00:30:58Cullen bends it forward.
00:31:01So, what a touch.
00:31:02Here's Laurent with a little pullback.
00:31:04Foster, can he get a shot away on the turn?
00:31:05Anthony might.
00:31:07That's the closest Burnley have come to score.
00:31:15Wide open opportunity for Burnley to get back into the game.
00:31:22Here's Daniel Levy.
00:31:23Often criticised chairman of Tottenham Hotspur.
00:31:28Their net spend over the last three seasons, by the way, is £384.7 million.
00:31:34And he's backed his managers.
00:31:39Porro.
00:31:39And he's done well again.
00:31:45Kudus with the cross in.
00:31:46It's a brilliant effort and a sensational goal by Richarlison.
00:31:51His second of the game.
00:31:53Tottenham's second of the game, which might make it safe.
00:31:56You never know with Spurs.
00:31:57But what I can tell you is, you'll have to go a long way to find a better goal in coming months than that one.
00:32:04Brilliant finish.
00:32:06You never quite know what his future will be at Spurs.
00:32:09And I'll tell you what, for the immediate, he has the hearts of everyone here.
00:32:18It could be Richarlison who goes away for the opening day with a match ball if he gets another.
00:32:23He did well there to bring in Sy to Gnacht, Richarlison as well.
00:32:26Here's Johnson in on goal.
00:32:27Takes it wide.
00:32:28Ponds it in.
00:32:29Spurs have a third.
00:32:31Game set and match.
00:32:33Richarlison has two and he played a major role in that right at the start of the move.
00:32:39It's being checked here for a possible foul right at the start of the move.
00:32:44Richarlison holding it up against Ektal.
00:32:46There's no foul there whatsoever.
00:32:49And then Sarr finds Brennan-Johnson.
00:32:53And Brennan-Johnson finds the back of the net.
00:32:57Oh, neatly played outside of the boot.
00:32:59That's a good finish.
00:33:01And that'll do Brennan-Johnson in the world of good as well.
00:33:04That's a good challenge on him by Bantanker.
00:33:09Spurs pick it up now, Spence.
00:33:12Audible's on the outside.
00:33:13Sarr now.
00:33:18Spence.
00:33:19Oh, he's done brilliantly.
00:33:20Goes for the near post, parried away.
00:33:21Kudus looks disappointed in the middle.
00:33:25He thought the ball might be pulled back to him by Jed Spence.
00:33:28Solanke was at the far post as well.
00:33:29He got brilliantly there to put Shauna onto the seat of his pants.
00:33:34Not going to beat the goalkeeper from that angle.
00:33:35Brun Larsson here for Burnley.
00:33:42Into the dying seconds of stoppage time.
00:33:46Comes to the far post.
00:33:47No-one can get a touch on it.
00:33:50And they'll have to wait for their first goal back in the Premier League.
00:33:52Burnley.
00:33:53Thomas Frank celebrates his first league game in charge of Spurs with a win.
00:33:58A ninth successive Tottenham manager to go undefeated in their first game.
00:34:02Good win for Tottenham Hotspur.
00:34:04But Burnley won't despair because for nearly an hour they were in the game.
00:34:08But in the end, it's Tottenham to win it 3-0.
00:34:11Very happy.
00:34:14First game of the season is always important.
00:34:17A clear 3-0 win.
00:34:20It's never easy to win.
00:34:22So I really appreciate it.
00:34:25I think there was a lot of good stuff in it.
00:34:28A clean sheet.
00:34:29Can't highlight that enough.
00:34:30I think that's key.
00:34:31I thought we started the game very tensive.
00:34:33They come out of the blocks.
00:34:35I thought we edged that way in the first half.
00:34:37And then the ruthlessness of the Premier League.
00:34:40Richarlison obviously puts one away.
00:34:42So overall, a lot of positives today for us, to be honest with you.
00:34:47And yeah, something certainly to work on for us.
00:34:49Are you aware that Spurs fans love wingers?
00:34:52They love wide players.
00:34:53They really seem to take you to their hearts?
00:34:55Yeah, I try to be different and it's part of my game getting the ball, taking players on and creating.
00:35:03So I'm glad that I'm in a team where I can do that freely also with the help of the teammates.
00:35:08I like to enjoy the game, entertain the fans because I believe that's what the game is about, you know.
00:35:12But at the same time also play with seriousness with the team to get the points.
00:35:16And I'm glad that happened today.
00:35:17The medical department and the performance department worked extremely hard to get him into a good place.
00:35:23And we're still looking after him.
00:35:24His performance were all two fantastic goals.
00:35:26And the last goal, I think, was actually, as my analysis department told me, 17 passes.
00:35:32Everyone in the team touched the goal and then finished with an unbelievable finish.
00:35:35It was fantastic.
00:35:37Maybe Jonathan giving current players a history lesson about their clubs could become a theme over the course of this season.
00:35:44What impressed you most about Spurs today?
00:35:46How direct they were.
00:35:48They weren't afraid to play that long pass into the forward.
00:35:51But particularly the number of crosses they got into the box.
00:35:54And this was after about 90 seconds.
00:35:58No other thought than get the ball into the box.
00:36:00There's one.
00:36:01No other thought than cross the ball into the box.
00:36:03There's two.
00:36:04After a minute and a half.
00:36:06Same thing again.
00:36:07Exactly the same.
00:36:08Move the ball.
00:36:09Get the ball into the box.
00:36:10And that is a good save from De Bravda.
00:36:12So that is showing their intentions of what they do.
00:36:15Kudos.
00:36:16OK.
00:36:16Josh Cullen should do a lot better.
00:36:18He's got to work harder to stop the cross.
00:36:20But one thing again is you move the ball like that.
00:36:23Whip it in.
00:36:24And that is such a clever finish from Richarlison.
00:36:26Running away from the goal and the technique.
00:36:29I mentioned the direct passes.
00:36:31If you're going to leave yourself that open.
00:36:33With that amount of space to play the ball through like Burnley did.
00:36:36Against good players.
00:36:38Then you're going to get punished.
00:36:39Really good hold up play from Richarlison.
00:36:43Then you go out to the other side.
00:36:44And you find yourself in a really dangerous position.
00:36:46Again.
00:36:47Keeper played the first one.
00:36:48Now the defender plays the second one.
00:36:50There's that position again.
00:36:52They're open again.
00:36:53They've got no protection really in front of that back five.
00:36:57Bergvall running off the ball as you have to do.
00:36:59Two wingers giving you the width that you need.
00:37:02And I mentioned balls into the box.
00:37:04Move the ball quickly and whip it in.
00:37:06No other thought than that.
00:37:08That is just sensational.
00:37:09It really is.
00:37:10It's an incredible finish.
00:37:12Same thing again.
00:37:13Open.
00:37:14No protection.
00:37:15That long ball into the forward again.
00:37:17Good hold up play again.
00:37:19Runners off the ball.
00:37:20Johnson in behind.
00:37:21It's a really well worked goal from Tottenham.
00:37:24But it's because they're thinking directly.
00:37:27Solanke comes on for Richarlison.
00:37:29Nothing changes.
00:37:30Cross into the box.
00:37:31He's unlucky not to get his goal as well.
00:37:34And what they also did is they adapted.
00:37:36They worked really well.
00:37:37They played five at the back in midweek against a really good team.
00:37:40They changed it today.
00:37:42They played four at the back today.
00:37:43And it worked for them perfectly.
00:37:45Burnley had their moments.
00:37:47But he'll be really, really pleased with the performances team has put into it.
00:37:51And the players he changed around.
00:37:52I think what is also key is that if they can keep Richarlison fit.
00:37:57Because that's been a problem of theirs for a while now.
00:38:00If they can keep him fit.
00:38:01And it's a big if.
00:38:02He'll put in performances like that.
00:38:03Particularly if they're that direct.
00:38:05Well, if they can keep him fit.
00:38:06They're also looking to add to the squad.
00:38:09And this will be good news for Spurs fans.
00:38:11The BBC Sport website are reporting that the club will try to accelerate talks with Crystal Palace.
00:38:16over the next 48 hours to sign Eberica Eze.
00:38:19So you can read more about that on the BBC Sport website.
00:38:22As far as Burnley are concerned.
00:38:24So much praise for their defence.
00:38:25We did that at the start.
00:38:27But as Scott Parker said.
00:38:28It's about being clinical as well.
00:38:30And taking those chances when you have them.
00:38:32Yeah, the Premier League you have to be clinical.
00:38:34And when you get chances.
00:38:35It's important that you take them.
00:38:37Burnley were in the game at 1-0.
00:38:38Burnley had some good moves.
00:38:41Some really good chances.
00:38:42And they weren't ruthless enough.
00:38:44They weren't clinical enough.
00:38:45And they got punished.
00:38:46So I think for Burnley, it's a difficult afternoon.
00:38:49A tough start for them.
00:38:51But they did have the moment.
00:38:52But if you're not going to be clinical, then you're not going to get out of the game.
00:38:55OK, still to come.
00:38:56These two are going to give their thoughts on Alexander Isak.
00:38:59But there are three Premier League games to look forward to on tomorrow's Match of the Day.
00:39:02You can listen to live commentary of all three games on BBC Sounds.
00:39:29Five Live's Premier League Sunday gets underway at midday.
00:39:32If you missed the start of the programme, you can watch from the beginning on iPlayer.
00:39:35You can find highlights of all tomorrow's games on there from 8 o'clock.
00:39:39Straight after us here on BBC One, you can see a new series of football interviews.
00:39:43The first one is with Wayne.
00:39:45And there's live Super League action tomorrow on BBC Two as Saints take on Huddersfield.
00:39:51And in Rugby Union, the Women's World Cup kicks off on Friday.
00:39:54The greatest players on earth come to England for the Women's Rugby World Cup.
00:39:59That is something special.
00:40:02Huge tackle.
00:40:04Absolute brilliance.
00:40:06Every pass, catch, and every match.
00:40:09She's going to go for her win.
00:40:12An absolute beauty.
00:40:13This summer, the world will watch.
00:40:15And names will be made.
00:40:17Incredible scene.
00:40:18Incredible scene.
00:40:19The Women's Rugby World Cup starts Friday, 6.30 on BBC One and iPlayer.
00:40:26Now, Fulham achieved their record Premier League points tally last season.
00:40:30They began their new campaign at Brighton.
00:40:32And Simon Brotherton, watch this.
00:40:34Carlos Belieber is fit and starts in the Brighton midfield, where the club are confident he'll stay.
00:40:41Maxime De Kuyper makes his debut at left-back after signing from Club Brugge.
00:40:45And Jorginho Ruta spearheads the attack after missing the back end of last season.
00:40:50Fulham have a mostly familiar look after a quiet summer.
00:40:53With Anthony Robinson and Ryan Sessegnon both injured, Jorge Cuenca comes in at the back.
00:40:58Josh King makes his second-ever Premier League start.
00:41:01And Raul Jimenez leads the attack.
00:41:03He scored the winner for Mexico in the Gold Cup final against the United States last month.
00:41:10This actually has been a tough fixture for Brighton in recent seasons.
00:41:15They've won only ten of the ten Premier League meetings against Fulham, which was the most recent one back in March.
00:41:26Belieber.
00:41:29Walls of approval from the stands.
00:41:31There's Mitoma.
00:41:34Late challenge by Lukic on him, but Brighton with De Kuyper, the debutant.
00:41:39First touch in the Premier League for him.
00:41:42Belieber surging forward.
00:41:44It's just gone out of play.
00:41:46I think.
00:41:47Maybe not.
00:41:49Slammed home by Jankouba Mente, but the flag went up straight away.
00:41:53And here you could clearly see the ball had gone out of play.
00:41:57Well, second season then for Fabian Herzler, Brighton's young head coach.
00:42:08Got Brighton to eighth last season and hoops will be high.
00:42:13O'Reilly finding Mente.
00:42:18Faced by Cuenca.
00:42:21Looks promising for the home side.
00:42:23Matt O'Reilly's delivery.
00:42:24Mitoma!
00:42:25It's the best we've seen from Brighton in the opening half an hour.
00:42:32Well worked.
00:42:34Measured attacking passage of play.
00:42:38Tete into Wilson.
00:42:40Now, Josh King.
00:42:46Bit of room for Alex Iwobi.
00:42:49Finely crafted.
00:42:49Ball and King trying to squeeze it.
00:42:52Pass for Bruggan at the near post.
00:42:56And Brighton's goalkeeper finally gets his hands on the ball.
00:43:02But it was almost an awkward moment there for the home side.
00:43:05Good ball to Kuyper.
00:43:10Collected by Rutter.
00:43:11Chased by Berger.
00:43:12Jorginho Rutter down.
00:43:15Brighton got a penalty.
00:43:17Joachim Andersen and Sander Berger.
00:43:20The two players chasing back.
00:43:22Trying to halt Rutter's advance.
00:43:25It was Sander Berger tangled with the Brighton forward.
00:43:35It's O'Reilly against Leno.
00:43:40It's Brighton's first goal of the new season.
00:43:45Matt O'Reilly from 12 yards.
00:43:49Berger penalised.
00:43:51Referee Sam Barrett pointed to the spot.
00:43:55And Matt O'Reilly fires Brighton and Hove Albion into the lead.
00:43:58Now with Iwobi.
00:44:04Bassi continues his run forward.
00:44:05Challenged by Buleba.
00:44:07Referee had a clear blue.
00:44:09Shakes his head.
00:44:10Goal kick.
00:44:12Bassi felt that he was fouled.
00:44:14Could see the referee had a pretty clear view of it from the edge of the penalty area.
00:44:20On-field decision has been rapidly backed up by the video assistant referee, Matt Donoghue.
00:44:26Donoghue.
00:44:34It won't be.
00:44:36Decent ball in.
00:44:37King tries to take it in his stride.
00:44:39In turn.
00:44:40Challenged in the box and down.
00:44:42And Fulham look frustrated.
00:44:44It will be checked for a possible penalty kick.
00:44:48The latest incident has been checked and cleared.
00:44:52Challenged by Yasin Ayari on Josh King.
00:44:55He's caught his heel as he went for the ball.
00:45:06Mitoma.
00:45:09Up against Anderson.
00:45:12Can't find Welbeck.
00:45:13This is Kearney.
00:45:14Interception made by Ayari.
00:45:18Urged to shoot by the crowd.
00:45:24This is Diego Gomez.
00:45:27Oh, that was a lucky moment there for Leno.
00:45:32Brighton close to a second goal here.
00:45:34Straight at the keeper but almost over the line.
00:45:37Grateful grab at the second attempt.
00:45:47Lukic.
00:45:48Dispossessed.
00:45:50Gomez has it.
00:45:52Good running here.
00:45:53Brian Gruda.
00:45:56Welbeck.
00:45:56Boulam survived.
00:46:03This was not far away from 2-0.
00:46:06Brian Gruda right across the face of the goal.
00:46:15Deep in added time.
00:46:17There's a chance for Kenny Teta.
00:46:19What an opportunity for 1-1 right at the end of the game.
00:46:28What a chance that was.
00:46:33Fulham just have to get the ball forward and they have to do it quickly.
00:46:38Smith-Rowe.
00:46:39Emil Smith-Rowe.
00:46:41Just wide via a deflection.
00:46:43It's a corner.
00:46:44And Fulham haven't given up hope yet.
00:46:53Last few seconds of added time.
00:46:55Far post.
00:46:551-1.
00:46:56Rodrigo Muniz.
00:46:59A stunning end to the match.
00:47:03It's a goal from the Brazilian super sub.
00:47:06And it's 1-1 on the south coast.
00:47:08A point apiece.
00:47:12Victory slips through Brighton's hands.
00:47:15Rodrigo Muniz.
00:47:17Late drama.
00:47:18Late goal.
00:47:19Brighton won.
00:47:20Fulham won.
00:47:22It feels painful, but I think it's very important to take the positive things away.
00:47:26We played a really good game.
00:47:28We defended really good.
00:47:31I think there was not a clear chance for Fulham during the whole game.
00:47:34We created chances in the second half.
00:47:35If we could score, we should score the second goal.
00:47:38I think then the game would be over.
00:47:40But yeah, that's football.
00:47:42We have to accept it.
00:47:43It's painful.
00:47:44It feels not great.
00:47:45But we have to take the positive things away and focus on these things.
00:47:48It was very difficult to play here.
00:47:50I think we did control well all the first half.
00:47:54Of course, when they scored from a penalty kick, the game was much more open.
00:47:59And they had some moments in contra-attacks and balls that we lost.
00:48:02We showed the spirit to fight until the last minute and we were rewarded for that.
00:48:07It's always, when we come to play here, it's difficult.
00:48:11But like last season, we scored a lot the last 10 minutes, 15 minutes of the game.
00:48:16But yeah, I'm happy.
00:48:18Rodrigo, again, it's not the first time.
00:48:20It's not going to be the last for sure.
00:48:22That had a massive impact in the way you want to play and scoring a important goal for us.
00:48:26Well, Brighton obviously scored through a penalty.
00:48:29Fulham had a couple of claims themselves.
00:48:31Do you want to look at the more debatable one?
00:48:34Yeah, I think it's a difficult one for the referee really.
00:48:39I think Fulham are obviously pushing and getting bodies in the box.
00:48:42And the ball breaks and Josh King just gets there before the defender.
00:48:48And from this angle, you've definitely seen them giving.
00:48:52I think that could definitely be a penalty.
00:48:53But I think the reaction from the Fulham players around it, you know, it's not big enough.
00:48:58They need to convince the referee that that's a penalty.
00:49:00I don't think they do that enough.
00:49:01Because Ayari does look like he kicks his foot.
00:49:04So if you're in that situation as a teammate, are you going back to that?
00:49:07Oh, you want the penalty then.
00:49:09Are you up? Are you up?
00:49:09Yeah, I just think it's not big enough where they can overturn it.
00:49:15I think I'd certainly be asking the question for a penalty if I was in that position.
00:49:18Don't think it's strong enough to overturn it.
00:49:20A couple of themes from that game that are quite similar to last season.
00:49:23First of all, Fulham having substitutes scoring goals for them and helping them out.
00:49:27But the other part from a Brighton point of view is they're not closing games out.
00:49:31Well, since the start of last season, they've led 11 times and they haven't won one game.
00:49:35And that probably cost them a place in Europe.
00:49:37Same thing happened again today.
00:49:39They had one big chance from Gruder to get that second goal.
00:49:42They didn't.
00:49:43And then they cost themselves in the last few minutes of the game.
00:49:46So that has to change for them going forward.
00:49:49Right.
00:49:49Newcastle went to Aston Villa off the back of a summer dominated by the future of that man behind us, Alexander Isak.
00:49:56Their thoughts on that to come.
00:49:58First, Robin Cowan at Villa Park.
00:49:59A new season always brings fresh hope.
00:50:04The bitter blow of falling short of Champions League qualification on the final day of last season will be a distant memory for Villa fans.
00:50:11If they can start with a win against the side that pipped them to the post.
00:50:16There's a debuting goal for Marco Bizot.
00:50:19A summer edition from Brest with Emi Martinez suspended.
00:50:22If it's been slow on the transfer front for Villa, Newcastle have been at the centre of the saga of the summer.
00:50:28Alexander Isak is unavailable after a so far unsuccessful push for a move elsewhere.
00:50:33Anthony Gordon starts as the number nine.
00:50:35Anthony Alanga makes his debut after making the switch from Nottingham Forest.
00:50:39Here's Thielemans trying to pick out Watkins.
00:50:53Giannale.
00:50:55Oh, Alanga will get on to this.
00:50:57Anthony Alanga with an effort at goal.
00:51:02That's a really smart stop from Bizot.
00:51:05Harvey Barnes goes down.
00:51:07Craig Pawson immediately waving the finger.
00:51:11And Gordon.
00:51:14Well, a flurry of chances.
00:51:18Fell very nicely for Alanga after a couple of Villa players clashed with each other.
00:51:24There was a really good save from the goalkeeper.
00:51:27Harvey Barnes going down.
00:51:29Under the challenge of Kamara.
00:51:30The referee had a good view of that.
00:51:33And then this effort from Gordon.
00:51:35Deflected over by Matty Cash.
00:51:40Unai Emery has led Aston Villa to Europe in all three seasons in charge.
00:51:45Another crack at the Europa League.
00:51:47This season, competition he's won four times as head coach.
00:51:50Joel Linton.
00:52:06Barnes with the cross over the top from Gordon.
00:52:11Barnes found Gordon beautifully here.
00:52:14Good movement as well.
00:52:16Not scored in the Premier League since January.
00:52:18Anthony Gordon.
00:52:23Alanga.
00:52:23Gimmeraich.
00:52:25Foul.
00:52:26With Dean preventing Alanga from getting on to the return ball.
00:52:30Whipped in.
00:52:41It's going to find Gimmeraich unmarked.
00:52:43Wouldn't quite fall for Barnes.
00:52:44It's Gordon.
00:52:46Shovelled away by Bizot.
00:52:52Villa a little slow to get to each one of these second balls, I've got to say.
00:52:58It's not been a very fruitful pre-season along with the Alexander-Izac saga.
00:53:06With six pre-season friendlies, four defeats, two draws.
00:53:10And quite a lot of anxiety.
00:53:14Villa failed to have an attempt on goal in the first 45 minutes.
00:53:19Thielemans now cash.
00:53:26Burns clearance straight out for a corner inside the first 40 seconds.
00:53:32Taken short.
00:53:40Worked to John McGinn.
00:53:42Drop of the shoulder.
00:53:45Header straight at Nick Pope.
00:53:47Nicely worked.
00:53:52And Boubacar Kamara making good contact, but directing it straight at the goalkeeper.
00:53:57Anana finds Thielemans quickly onto Rodgers.
00:54:06Watkins!
00:54:10First real sight on goal.
00:54:14Straight at the goalkeeper.
00:54:16That has given Aston Villa a little bit of encouragement.
00:54:19Rodgers finding John McGinn.
00:54:21Cash.
00:54:30I'm going to pull back towards the penalty area.
00:54:33This could prove costly.
00:54:35Anthony Gordon in behind.
00:54:37Now, Esri Konza.
00:54:39He's going to be sent off.
00:54:40He's gone, surely.
00:54:44Decision confirmed.
00:54:45I really don't see how he can have any complaints about that at all.
00:54:49Very strange decision.
00:54:52By Esri Konza.
00:54:55Konza off.
00:54:56Villa down to ten.
00:54:58And they hand the advantage to Newcastle United.
00:55:04Jason Tindall sent off when they met Aston Villa at St. James' Park on Boxing Day.
00:55:09Provoking a 20-man tunnel brawl.
00:55:12And the Wham hoodie reportedly escalated the situation on that day.
00:55:21Liberamento.
00:55:25Anthony Gordon.
00:55:26Closest to it, but not close in the end.
00:55:34Guimaraish.
00:55:35Gordon.
00:55:47It's Barnes.
00:55:52Rustiness has been evident for both sides.
00:55:58And the narrative is going to be that Newcastle lack a goal scorer.
00:56:01They have one on their books in the building, but not here.
00:56:05Will he still be with Newcastle at the end of the transfer window?
00:56:10I thought today we answered a few questions in terms of our spirit and our fight
00:56:13to show that we're still a force in the league and we can compete.
00:56:17Now it's only one game.
00:56:18We have to do that regularly and consistently like we always have done.
00:56:21But we look forward to the challenges ahead.
00:56:24After the red card, of course, we were a little bit more with the necessity to defence
00:56:30and to be in the commitment we did.
00:56:33But overall, the most important is how we responded in all the issues that happened on the field.
00:56:40So I am very proud of our work and I am not happy with one point only, but I accept it.
00:56:45I'm sure it's been an amazingly stressful summer for you already.
00:56:47I mean, how much do you want a resolution to the Alexander Izak situation and also, you know,
00:56:52I guess the transfer window in general?
00:56:54Yeah, I think from my perspective as manager of the team, you want a resolution quickly
00:56:57because you don't want any distraction.
00:56:59Taking away the focus of the players, taking away the focus of our supporters.
00:57:03We want everyone helping the team as much as we can and we want to be united together.
00:57:07So, yeah, we'd like a resolution, but we're not in control of that.
00:57:11So we'll see what happens in the coming days.
00:57:13Well, of course, all the focus is on Newcastle at the moment and how they attack
00:57:18and Alexander Izak.
00:57:19Before we get to him, did that front three today give you encouragement?
00:57:23They certainly caused them problems and given the circumstances,
00:57:27I think the performance from the front three and the rest of the team actually
00:57:31would give me encouragement going forward in the circumstances
00:57:34that through no fault of their own, they're having to deal with.
00:57:37I thought their attitude was excellent.
00:57:39They looked far fitter than Aston Villa, stronger than Aston Villa
00:57:43and they certainly created more chances than Aston Villa.
00:57:47But the big thing is they didn't take them.
00:57:49But when you've got the pace that Newcastle have up top
00:57:52and when Gordon's having to play up front, it was a great run,
00:57:55which then creates the space for Alanga to run into.
00:57:58Very good ball from Tonali and he should score.
00:58:01I think there's no doubt about that.
00:58:04Again, they work it really well.
00:58:05Bardens eventually gets the ball and whips a good ball in
00:58:08and Anthony Gordon finds himself in a good position.
00:58:11He just can't direct the header there.
00:58:14Look, he does whip a good ball in and again, he should do better.
00:58:19They're pressing, I thought, from every Newcastle player.
00:58:22The energy that they showed was excellent.
00:58:24Similar thing again, using his pace to get his shot away.
00:58:28OK, it doesn't work for them.
00:58:30Second half, when you're going to go that tight
00:58:33and leave that much space with the pace that these two have got,
00:58:35good ball in from Alanga and it's a clear red card.
00:58:38Konter has to go.
00:58:40He brings him down, red card.
00:58:42Then you're thinking, OK, go on, kick on.
00:58:44They can't actually do that.
00:58:45But I think a centre forward actually gets on the end of this
00:58:48because just his reaction, he just goes that split second
00:58:53too late, does Anthony Gordon.
00:58:55But in terms of performance, particularly first half,
00:58:58you can see they absolutely battered Aston Villa.
00:59:01What do you both think?
00:59:02Eddie Howe converted Joel Linton into a midfielder.
00:59:05So is there, would you give any credence to the thought
00:59:08that given his coaching ability and how he can spot versatility
00:59:11in a player, he could turn one of that front three,
00:59:14Gordon at this stage, into a centre forward?
00:59:16No, I don't think so.
00:59:18And I think for Anthony Gordon as well, I think his best position
00:59:20is out wide and that's where he looks more of a danger.
00:59:23So I think what's clear is Newcastle need a centre forward,
00:59:27whether that is Isaac staying at the football club,
00:59:29which could be difficult now, or they bring a centre forward in
00:59:32because you get more out of, especially Gordon and Alanga
00:59:36just going to the football club, playing from wide areas.
00:59:38So where are you at then with Alexander Issa?
00:59:41Before we come back to him, where are you with it?
00:59:43Yeah, I think it's a difficult one.
00:59:45I think with Issa, I think he has to go about it the right way
00:59:49and there's ways of leaving a football club.
00:59:52That's where the football club wants to get with you.
00:59:54And if you want to leave to go to a different club,
00:59:56there's the right way to do it.
00:59:57And I've been there myself where I've asked to leave
00:59:59Manchester United in my career at times.
01:00:02And you have to do the right way and you have to be professional
01:00:07about it.
01:00:08But you put in a transfer request, you didn't refuse to train,
01:00:11you didn't refuse to play.
01:00:12So there is a way to do it and Alex is not going about it
01:00:16the right way at all.
01:00:18And you have to feel sorry for the players and the manager.
01:00:21The players today are busting the gut for the football club,
01:00:24for the thousands of fans that have travelled all that way
01:00:26to Villa Park today.
01:00:27They're giving their all, yet they're looking at another player,
01:00:31wherever he is, refusing to play, despite having a three-year contract
01:00:36and on to over 100 grand a week, whereas they're paying 60 or 70 quid
01:00:41for a ticket, 30 quid for petrol or a train ticket to get there and back.
01:00:45I mean, you can imagine the anger that they're feeling that someone
01:00:49is taking the liberty of saying, I'm refusing to play.
01:00:52You just can't do that when you've got a three-year contract.
01:00:56I think for the fans, the fans, especially, obviously you know better
01:01:00than anyone, the Geordies.
01:01:01I think they're a passionate fan base and it's going to be hard for them
01:01:04to come back.
01:01:05But also for his teammates, I think as a teammate, I think you expect your teammates
01:01:12to come in and train every day, to give everything on the training pitch,
01:01:15to give everything when you pull a shirt on to go and play.
01:01:17And the fact that he's refusing to come in and train, I think it's going to be
01:01:22very difficult to come back in front of the team.
01:01:24Is that the difference?
01:01:25Like, within the professional football squad, is that the difference for you?
01:01:29So you asked to leave Manchester United, but you still train and play.
01:01:33Therefore, when everything's sorted and you do sign a new contract,
01:01:36it's handshakes and you're back, is it?
01:01:39Whereas if you're not training and not playing, there's a trust element there.
01:01:44Is that what you're saying?
01:01:45Yeah, there is a trust element and I think he's just going about it
01:01:49the wrong way.
01:01:49Maybe he's getting advised wrongly.
01:01:51But also for the team who's trying to sign him, which obviously it looks like
01:01:55it's Liverpool who's trying to sign him.
01:01:57You have to wonder, is that the sort of player you want?
01:01:59Who is going to desert his teammates?
01:02:01Who is going to walk away from a huge football club?
01:02:04And it's a good opportunity if Liverpool are there, but it has to be done
01:02:07in the right way and I don't think it is.
01:02:08I also understand there's two sides to every story and we've never heard anything
01:02:11from him or his side yet.
01:02:14It's all leaks or reports coming from, briefings coming from other people.
01:02:21But what I would also say is, at the minute, there is still a chance,
01:02:26albeit a small chance, that he could be integrated back into the team
01:02:30if he says sorry.
01:02:32If he wants to do that.
01:02:33I don't know.
01:02:34It's unlikely that that's the case.
01:02:35But if it gets past the transfer deadline day and there's still an impasse
01:02:40and it's a deadlock and no-one's budging, he's still at Newcastle,
01:02:43I can't see a way back then because it's, well, I have to be here
01:02:47and I have to be here because no-one else, we've not found a solution to it.
01:02:51Newcastle have not been able to bring the two centre-forwards in they need
01:02:55for him to then be able to leave.
01:02:57Right, to Friday night's game.
01:03:00Next, Liverpool open their title defence against Bournemouth.
01:03:03Steve Wilson, let's handle it.
01:03:07Anfield's fame is forged upon emotion and tonight it is Red Raw.
01:03:12Liverpool, the start of a new season, the defence of a title should be
01:03:15an occasion for joy, but there's very little joy here
01:03:19for there is no Jota here, just his song ringing around the stadium
01:03:25and a profound sense of loss which will linger for a long, long time.
01:03:31But there is a game to be won and lost.
01:03:35Liverpool's extravaganza of spending may not have stopped yet,
01:03:38but there are four new faces, Wertz, Rimpong, Ekitike and Kerkhez
01:03:43who lines up against his former club.
01:03:45Gravenberg is suspended.
01:03:47McAllister for Jones, the only change for the community shield.
01:03:51Kerkhez was one of three defenders to leave Bournemouth in the window.
01:03:54You'd imagine there'd be more incomings for them before the end of the month.
01:03:58Petrovic is their new goalkeeper.
01:04:00Truffaut and Diakite make debuts in defence.
01:04:03Iriola's side have only lost two of their last 13 away league games.
01:04:12We will now observe a period of silence in memory of Diogo Jota,
01:04:19our Forever 20, and his beloved brother Andre Silva.
01:04:23The silence will begin and end on the referee's whistle.
01:04:26A beautiful tribute to Andre Silva and Diogo Jota.
01:04:51Werdz to Frimpong.
01:05:05Oh, Van Dijk!
01:05:09That's a good chance that Ekitike may almost have clouded Van Dijk's vision there.
01:05:16Brooks, Truffaut.
01:05:19Delivering the cross.
01:05:24Canate heading away as Alex Scott tried to nod it back into the danger area.
01:05:28And there's a break on here.
01:05:30Oh, Ekitike can't quite take it with him.
01:05:33They're asking for handball, Liverpool.
01:05:35And Anthony Taylor has stopped play and given Bournemouth a free kick.
01:05:45It came off Sanessi's thigh onto his arm.
01:05:49That second movement was what roused Liverpool's suspicions.
01:05:5420 minutes played and Diogo Jota, the number 20, has been retired in his honour.
01:06:08And his name is being sung all around Anfield.
01:06:11And Anthony Taylor is heading off in the direction of the touchline here.
01:06:24Both Areola and Slott are interested in what's being said here.
01:06:28Well, we understand that there was an allegation that there was a racist comment towards on transfer menu by somebody in the crowd.
01:06:43A little over 10 minutes to go in the half.
01:06:45It's not been littered with opportunities.
01:06:46Van Dijk's header over the bar early on.
01:06:50Maybe Liverpool's best.
01:06:56Ooh, and Matt Smith's done really well.
01:06:58Got away from McAllister and it's scuffed.
01:07:01It's a brilliant chance for Marcus Tavernier.
01:07:03And he scuffed it straight into Alisson's grateful gloves.
01:07:07That's the best chance of the game.
01:07:08Liverpool, for all that they are champions, or maybe because they were already champions,
01:07:20have actually gone five games without winning.
01:07:23Their last victory was the 23rd of April.
01:07:26A 5-1 victory over Spurs here.
01:07:28Nikitiko trying to bundle through and he has!
01:07:30And he scores!
01:07:31A first Anfield goal for Ugo Ekichike.
01:07:42And Liverpool are in front.
01:07:45And it's 2-2 in the red jersey for him.
01:07:49And he's involved in the build-up.
01:07:53Receives it back, wriggles through.
01:07:56And tucks it away nicely.
01:07:58A little bit of fortune, maybe, the way he got through Sonesi.
01:08:02But once he's in that position, it's a very tidy finish indeed.
01:08:08The number 20.
01:08:12Three years ago, almost to the week.
01:08:14Bournemouth will beat 9-0 here.
01:08:17Somewhat surprisingly, Mohamed Salah played all 90 minutes of that game without scoring.
01:08:23Nikitiko.
01:08:24Gakpo looking for room, and still, and finding some!
01:08:34And doubling Liverpool's lead.
01:08:39Well, when Gakpo receives this, he's still got a lot to do.
01:08:42Thought about shooting there, thought about shooting again,
01:08:45and when he did, he found the corner.
01:08:48All about composure.
01:08:50Waiting for the opportunity to come.
01:08:53And then finding the finish.
01:08:59Super-sized flick was snuffed out, and that's a good ball into Brooks.
01:09:04Running in behind Cunate.
01:09:05Semenya's in the middle!
01:09:07And has scored!
01:09:08It's a great counter-attacking goal!
01:09:12And Bournemouth are back in the game!
01:09:16Such a good goal.
01:09:18Brooks is onside by the look of that.
01:09:20And it's a great ball.
01:09:22Perfect for Semenya.
01:09:24And Alisson couldn't keep it out.
01:09:26It's Liverpool 2, it's Bournemouth 1.
01:09:29And you'd be hard-pressed to say they don't deserve it.
01:09:37Salah.
01:09:38Salah couldn't reach it.
01:09:39Traore to Semenya.
01:09:41And here go Bournemouth on the counter again.
01:09:43On trying Semenya.
01:09:45Evan Nielsen to his right.
01:09:46Tavernier to his left.
01:09:47He's got to go left, surely.
01:09:48He goes alone!
01:09:49And scores brilliantly!
01:09:51It's 2-2!
01:09:54And Semenya has both Bournemouth goals.
01:09:57What a comeback!
01:10:00What about this?
01:10:01Running from way inside his own half of the field.
01:10:04A quite brilliant individual goal.
01:10:07The runners right and left.
01:10:09Just scattered uncertainty in the minds of Liverpool defenders.
01:10:14And Semenya went straight down the middle.
01:10:17It's 2-2.
01:10:22Alisson from almost the halfway line finding sob a slight.
01:10:26Mohamed Salah.
01:10:27Oh, lovely ball.
01:10:28Jones nearly got onto it.
01:10:30A bit of a mess.
01:10:31And in!
01:10:32From Chiesa.
01:10:37Almost Liverpool's forgotten man.
01:10:40But Federico Chiesa might have won this game for them.
01:10:43It's an awkward height for the Italian, this.
01:10:47And he controls it well.
01:10:52That's a really good finish.
01:10:55And it's Liverpool 3.
01:10:57It's Bournemouth 2.
01:10:59Chiesa with two minutes to go.
01:11:06Joe Gomez underneath this with Hamid Traore.
01:11:11Bournemouth aren't quite beaten yet.
01:11:12Endo.
01:11:15Chiesa might have been offside.
01:11:16Salah isn't.
01:11:17And Salah's got there ahead of Hill.
01:11:19Mohamed Salah here.
01:11:21Four in the middle for him.
01:11:22Salah.
01:11:23And that'll do it.
01:11:25CHEERING
01:11:25Mohamed Salah's tenth goal on the opening day of a Premier League season.
01:11:40That is a league record.
01:11:41And it secures the points for the champions.
01:11:49Look at this.
01:11:51Brilliant.
01:11:52How far has he run in comparison to those blue-shirted defenders to get there first?
01:11:59That's brilliant play by Mohamed Salah.
01:12:06And Liverpool start with a win.
01:12:10A hard-earned victory.
01:12:12Lots of emotion whirling around Anfield.
01:12:16Along with the song of Diogo Jota.
01:12:21At the end of an emotional night.
01:12:24Liverpool 4.
01:12:26Bournemouth 2.
01:12:28We play against a team that never gives up.
01:12:31Very fit.
01:12:32Last season they were top of every chart when it comes to running stats.
01:12:35And again, they were very impressive in that sense today.
01:12:38The way they counter-attacked us with the second goal they scored, for example.
01:12:42Yeah, that shows you that you have to give credit to them as well.
01:12:46But they face a team that's really fit as well.
01:12:48Last season, but this season again.
01:12:50And although we've lost many players, the mentality to come back after a disappointment is still there also with the new ones.
01:12:57Even when we scored the 2-2, I think we looked like we were with a little bit more energy, but it's true that you never know against Liverpool.
01:13:05Because when they really need, they find an extra energy boost, and probably a third goal.
01:13:14We go both players to the same ball, we leave the ball there, it's true that it's a great finish.
01:13:19But it's a shame because we've been really, really close.
01:13:21For my goal, it took me one year to score in the Premier League, but we say in Italian, I don't know if you can say this in English, but better late than never.
01:13:30Oh, yeah.
01:13:31Yeah, it's the same? It's the same in English? OK, better late than never.
01:13:34We understand that Antoine was the victim of some racial comments from the crowd. That's horrendous.
01:13:40Yes, I didn't notice life, but straight away Antoine and the referee told us, the person has been identified, and obviously it's a big shame.
01:13:49These things continue happening, the first game of the Premier League, everyone watching, it's a lovely game of football,
01:13:57and that we have to talk about these things still today, I think it's really a big shame.
01:14:02It's obvious that we don't want this in football, that there's nothing we can say how we feel about this,
01:14:08and we don't want this in football, but we definitely don't want this at Anfield.
01:14:12And unfortunately, that's now part of the story, because for the rest, we should talk about how a great tribute there was for Djokovic,
01:14:19what our fans did for him, for his family, with the great banner and the way they sang in Ever Walken on all of these things.
01:14:25But let's be clear, the club had a clear statement, and this should never happen in football, let alone at Anfield.
01:14:33It was such an emotional, moving night at Anfield, and Antoine Semenya has posted on Instagram today about what happened to him last night,
01:14:43saying that it will stay with him forever, but not because of one person's words,
01:14:48but more how the entire football family stood together.
01:14:52And Merseyside Police have confirmed today that they've arrested a 47-year-old man
01:14:56on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
01:15:01As far as the game itself was concerned, Liverpool look like they're going to be very entertaining to watch this season.
01:15:10As to Bournemouth, I see, to be fair.
01:15:12Yeah, Bournemouth were very, very good.
01:15:13They're never going to fail to score goals, I don't think, Liverpool,
01:15:16but at the moment, they look very, very vulnerable in the turnover of possession in terms of counter-attack goals.
01:15:23And after 38 games last season, they conceded two in counter-attacks.
01:15:28After one game this season, they've conceded two.
01:15:30Look there, Kirk has got a clue where he is.
01:15:33That should have been...
01:15:34They should have scored two goals and went 2-0 up Bournemouth on similar occasions in doing that.
01:15:40OK, it doesn't quite work here with that first pass.
01:15:43They've got 3v3 there.
01:15:45First pass doesn't work, but Liverpool are all over the place defensively.
01:15:50What's Canard here?
01:15:51He hasn't got a clue what's going on behind him.
01:15:54And I said they're very vulnerable, particularly down the sides and behind either full-back.
01:15:58There's Kirk Estere.
01:16:00He's on the way to attack when they haven't even got possession,
01:16:03which means he's five or six yards out of position.
01:16:06I mean, that is an unbelievable goal and a great finish.
01:16:09But Liverpool are all over defensively.
01:16:11The balance doesn't look right at all.
01:16:13They change the full-backs.
01:16:14Robertson comes on and Endo comes on.
01:16:17Curtis Jones is attacking into the box, runs straight past Bournemouth players.
01:16:20They lose the ball.
01:16:22Look, you've got eight players in that 18-yard box.
01:16:24And all of a sudden, you've got 4v2.
01:16:27It's an unbelievable run.
01:16:29But look at how many players Liverpool players are out of position.
01:16:33It's a great finish again.
01:16:35The balance doesn't look right at all.
01:16:36OK, they score two late goals to go on and win the game.
01:16:40But that's what I mentioned there when you look at it.
01:16:42That is incredible.
01:16:44Counter-attack goals last season too.
01:16:46Already two this season.
01:16:47So there's work to be done on that side of things.
01:16:50Further forward, you were impressed with that critique, weren't you?
01:16:53Yeah, I thought he had a really good game and obviously involved in the first two goals.
01:16:57But what I really liked about this game is he comes short at times.
01:17:00He ran in behind here.
01:17:01He comes short.
01:17:02Then he carries on and he lays the ball off and then he gets in the box.
01:17:05He wants to get on the end of crosses.
01:17:08Again here, comes short, comes off the defence.
01:17:11Good pass out wide.
01:17:13First thought, gets in the box.
01:17:14Salah has a shot, doesn't cross it, but he's making the right movement.
01:17:20But what I like about this one, it's a double movement.
01:17:22He lays it off.
01:17:23He goes to goal again and then he stays short.
01:17:26Now he's keeping the ball with defenders guessing.
01:17:28And now he sees the space and he makes that running behind.
01:17:31Gets a little bit of luck, which he deserved.
01:17:33And then a cool finish at the end of it.
01:17:35And again here, being in the middle of the goal, I think it's really important.
01:17:39Good cross, should do better, should get another goal.
01:17:43And this one, good composure, makes a corner run, holds the ball up well.
01:17:48He's got the composure to see his team-mate.
01:17:50Lovely way to pass.
01:17:51Gap pro, really calm and composed.
01:17:54So I think it's a very good debut for him and involved in two goals.
01:17:59Yeah.
01:17:59And Alan, you tweeted last night,
01:18:01why would you want to move to Anfield now to be Eka TK's understudy?
01:18:04I can't imagine why you did that.
01:18:07Let's just show you the league table before we go,
01:18:10even though not everybody's played yet.
01:18:12Manchester City have had their best start to a season for six years,
01:18:16one of four teams to take maximum points so far.
01:18:19At the other end, Wolves sit bottom
01:18:21after making their worst start to a league campaign for 22 years.
01:18:25But there's a long way to go.
01:18:28So from today's game, Sunderland were on first,
01:18:32but already Liverpool and Manchester City are up and running
01:18:35and both scored four.
01:18:37So I suppose you could say,
01:18:38the more things change, the more things stay the same.
01:18:41Gabby's here tomorrow.
01:18:42Good night.
01:18:42Gabby's here tomorrow.
