00:00Let me tell you a story.
00:06A story that is 91 years of unrivaled resilience and endurance.
00:14It's about a motorcycle that has stood the test of time without losing its essential DNA.
00:22It is the longest running motorcycle model in production anywhere in the world.
00:30Experience the bullet story.
00:41Motorcycle design advanced at pace through the 1920s into the 1930s.
00:47Because cars were so expensive, motorcycles were hugely popular.
00:52Whether you rode them solo to go to work,
00:55attached a family sidecar so you could take your family away for trips at weekends,
01:00or a box sidecar that could carry the tools of your trade.
01:04Motorcycles had to be very versatile.
01:07And that was certainly the case with the bullet when it was introduced in September 1932.
01:14In 250, 350 and 500 cc engine sizes.
01:19Bullets were a thoroughly modern design.
01:23The four valve cylinder head on the 500 bullet meant that it could actually achieve 90 miles an hour straight off the production line.
01:34Bullets also had a really revolutionary centre stand that doubled up as a prop stand.
01:41And a four-speed foot change gearbox.
01:45Nearly every other single motorcycle at this time had an old-fashioned hand change gearbox.
01:53One of the most significant milestones in the lifetime of the bullet was in 1948,
02:08the invention of Royal Enfield's groundbreaking swinging arm rear suspension.
02:14No other manufacturer had built a bike like this before for full production use,
02:19and the rest of the world followed.
02:21Not only did it give the ride a cushion comfort,
02:25it gave great adhesion and traction off-road,
02:29which meant that the bullet was superb in trials competitions,
02:32which then gave riders the confidence to buy this machine when it was launched as a roadster.
02:42It wasn't until 1950 that Royal Enfield got a star rider, Johnny Britton.
02:48Johnny won every single competition going.
02:52The Scott trial, the British experts trial, the incredibly tough Scottish six days trial,
02:58which he won twice.
03:00The ISDT, known as the Olympics of motorcycling.
03:04He picked up 13 gold medals, and it was undoubtedly this off-road prowess of the bullet
03:12that first attracted the Indian Army to want to use it to patrol its order line.
03:19The first 500 bullets ordered by the Indian Army arrived in Bombay at the beginning of 1952,
03:28and because they needed to be deployed immediately, they were already run in.
03:33Day and night for weeks, Redditch factory workers had been roaring round the streets of Redditch
03:39to make the engines seize proof.
03:41Their success in this role directly led to the formation of Enfield India
03:46and the opening of the first factory at Tiruvotia in Madras at the end of 1955.
03:53This beautifully and faithfully restored 1955 Indian Army bullet holds a very special place
04:04in Royal Enfield's history.
04:07Looking up its frame and engine numbers, it is the very last motorcycle
04:11from the very last batch that was shipped to the Madras motors.
04:15The next batch of CKD bullets to arrive in India were sent to Enfield, India.
04:23The 1960s and the 1970s, there was very little change to the bullet,
04:34except for a switch to alternator and coil ignition electrics.
04:39As for colors, it could be any color you wanted, as long as it was black.
04:47The Indian Armed Forces have several motorcycle display teams which ride bullets.
04:53They're used at Independence Day and Republic Day parades
04:57and they perform acrobatic displays all over the country on them.
05:03The Tornadoes is made up from personnel of the Army Service Corps
05:08and in 2017, they set a Guinness World Record for the most number of people on a motorcycle.
05:17From the late 1970s and then into the 1980s, bullets became more colorful, like this gorgeous deluxe model and the superstar.
05:39Also, bullets began to be exported, first to the United Kingdom, where it had originated, and then to many other countries around the world.
05:50So now, it had gone full circle.
05:53The bullet had first been imported into India, and now India was sending this motorcycle out to the world,
06:01where classic motorcycle enthusiasts loved it for its old school charm.
06:07And that was especially the case towards the end of the decade, when the Bullitt 500 was introduced.
06:20Aisha Motors took over Enfield India in 1994, and rapidly made the decision to stop producing all the other lightweight motorcycles
06:29that supported the Bullitt and concentrate on the mid-sized motorcycle segment, which meant the 350 and 500 Bullitt.
06:38Until this point, the Bullitt had been a workhorse.
06:41It had been a motorcycle that you used for a purpose, to commute on your farm, for business.
06:48But by the mid-1990s, and especially after riders had gone on the Himalayan Odyssey,
06:53it became a motorcycle that you could also use for pleasure, for touring, and for adventure.
07:06At the turn of the century, the Bullitt received a couple of major upgrades to keep it relevant for a new generation of riders.
07:152001 came the first Bullitt with an electric starter.
07:19And then in 2005, Royal Enfield celebrated its 50th anniversary in India,
07:28and this Electra, with its more fresh and modern paint scheme,
07:34came out as a special anniversary edition of the Bullitt.
07:41Royal Enfield introduced its seminal unit construction engine in 2008,
07:47which was a major step forward for Royal Enfield.
07:51It had trachoid oil pumps, hydraulic valve lifters,
07:54a seven-plate wet clutch, and an automatic primary chain tensioner.
08:00However, it still retained Royal Enfield's signature thump.
08:06Towards the end of the decade, 2019, that UCE engine was employed in the Bullitt Trials Works replica,
08:21an homage to Johnny Britton's all-conquering trials motorcycles of the 1950s.
08:26Ninety-one years of the Bullitt means that there are so many legends,
08:33and that's especially the case when it comes to motorcycle travel.
08:38The Bullitt's simplicity, ruggedness, ease of maintenance,
08:43and because of its trials heritage, its ability to go over tough terrain,
08:46have made it a trusted companion to these adventurers.
08:55And now, we have the Bullitt moving on to the new J-platform engine,
09:01which is super smooth, thanks to its balancer shaft,
09:06and has proved so successful.
09:08And now, the Bullitt gets to enjoy it.
09:20The very first Bullitt's in 1932 were pinstriped by hand.
09:28When the Bullitt came to India, that tradition continued.
09:32The ingredients of the paint is their family secret.
09:41They then use their artistry with the Madras pinstripes,
09:45and that is their gift, not just to Royal Enfield,
09:48but to every single rider of a Bullitt.
10:02The mighty Royal Enfield Bullitt, born in England 91 years ago,
10:08went around the world, found its home in India,
10:12where it became an icon, and now, in 2023,
10:16carries that legacy forward with a new heart,
10:20but with the same beat.
