00:46not for the animals so far she's conquered the worst of the great plains

00:52he didn't want to give us a mirror at the sink just everywhere

00:59and now she'll take on the midwest and the ugly will have nowhere to hide no

01:14the midwest a region rife with farmlands and quaint towns and plenty of ugly houses but now just like

01:23that vl guy said i'm going deeper to north dakota to a town called mandan

01:32mandan north dakota or as the locals like to call it where the west begins and looking around

01:39i got it i'm here to meet miriam and see if our first trip to north dakota leads me to the ugliest house

01:51in america

01:56i will say it's different

02:03well hello rata hi miriam how are you i'm good and you not bad let's the wind let's go talk about

02:11well that's common in north dakota yeah what is this design called castle on the prairie

02:18castle on the prairie yep i'm miriam and i live in the castle house in mandan north dakota

02:23i love turrets it had a turret it was stucco that's unusual for north dakota had a tile roof

02:31which looked a lot like my house in arizona that i had to sell we came and looked at the house i loved

02:36it my husband not so much and then he finally said every princess needs a castle

02:47she fell in love she couldn't she could not have it honestly this house has so many themes

02:52that it was tough to figure out what to look at first you have to see it to believe it and it's

02:58a house nobody else will ever have okay let's go check out okay that sounds good

03:06okay barriam you have a white rug as your entry rug i do i feel like you're looking for trouble

03:14that's what my kids say but it's washable in here i'm seeing things that wall

04:51what is that well it's a great soaker tub but i'll tell you what for you

04:56well because you're a shouty for me my knees will be up to here oh my if you get a view from those

05:05mirrors you can see every anatomy part you could possibly imagine i don't know whether to be mortified

05:12or impressed where are two next we'll go back downstairs to the kitchen

05:18uh the lamp post in the kitchen below lights why i think it went with this

05:32uh yeah i guess so well let's go downstairs around the corner and they're very narrow steps

05:40it's a labyrinth

05:41oh i feel something yeah it feels different right has a little give to it it's a shooting

05:50pit he had a rifle range down here this is the pit they would start setting up in and it's uh quite

05:59large wait so he would shoot through that door yes there's nothing but land out here

06:11this is a very interesting home and as you may know you are one of three semi-finalists in the

06:17midwest region this is our first time in north dakota well glad it's at my house i'm going to say

06:22thank you and i'm gonna make my way out

06:31hmm so this is the range in the home on the range this house looks like a european mixtape

06:42it's got influences from spain italy france and from north dakota what's more awkward than a small

06:50soaking tub where you're surrounded by mirrors at all angles that's the surprise why do you need a

06:57shooting range in the basement when you have a backyard that takes up half the state of north dakota

07:04the midwest is a straight shot to ugly

07:09with mandan in the rear view i venture east 840 long miles east to the midwest's biggest metropolis

07:18shy town baby

07:24i'm here meeting joe and ricky to see how a home can so boldly stand out

07:33in a city literally built by architectural legends and i see why

07:39it is standing out

07:52i feel like i go with this house

07:53oh hello how's it going joe and ricky let's talk about this house subtle right house yeah sure

08:09i almost missed it hi i'm ricky this is my husband joe we live in a 150 year old victorian house in

08:16rogers park chicago this house had been listed and we had joked about it and i was like why don't

08:20we go check it out just like oh for funsies by the time we finished the tour he was convinced and

08:25he was like yeah we're putting in an offer this house is it's a staple for the neighborhood this

08:31neighborhood is known for being eclectic being an artsy neighborhood so i know they want to pay homage

08:36to that does it need to be everywhere in the house that i don't think so

08:42we do love the outside but the inside is pretty rough well let's check it out yeah let's do it

08:47whoa the colors are inside oh yeah everywhere that color is called clam bisque and smokers yellow and

08:54hospital green yeah smokers yellow yeah i mean right and if you look hard there's glitter i don't have to

09:02look that hard every surface i'm afraid to touch anything because that glitters for life i hate

09:09glitter you're just always like

09:16did you get it well the previous owners were two artists they used like every inch of the property

09:22as art installations and a lot of her art was the art of decay so she used materials that decayed

09:28naturally well that floor i can see the pink and blue tiles yeah on top of the other linoleum there's

09:37hardwood floor underneath that it's like an onion you know okay where else the stairs for some reason

09:43just really extend it's a landing it's almost like a stage yeah there you go like we feel like there

09:50used to be a banister here you should put a little curtain i keep touching the wall touching stuff and

09:59then being like did i get you're good you're fine it's fine how about now headed upstairs i think so

10:07yeah let's go see what's that pink green yellow these circular windows she likes cruise ships i think

10:15and so she had those installed there's eight of them in the house i think we can check out the guest

10:22room what was on the floor that they couldn't move it to paint that spot i actually think that they had

10:30a water bed so if you have a water bed you have to either drain it or move it somehow so it just makes

10:35sense to just paint around it that wall is this a design no no it was just peeling and then the

10:40wallpaper showed up behind it she was like oh oh yeah this isn't my jam i don't know what it is no for

10:47sure where else up here are we gonna look at the primary bathroom right yeah let's go check it out

10:56doing too much textured walls i think they got the pink in oh my god the tub stop it in the listing

11:05photos it looked like it was filled with water the whole time this place is where colors come to die

11:13my outfit walked in it was like oh old heads grandma

11:20oh i just got lightheaded oh i was just passed out

11:24i think this is this is the most stressful room for me there's more to be seen

11:28we're at the top of the ship yeah this is the primary bedroom this is the reason that we bought

11:40it because there had to be one room where we could just go hide i'm dead at your bathroom your ensuite

11:46it's open concept living i know couples do their business in front of one another but that's a bit much

11:55thank you for showing me your home i'm gonna make my way back downstairs uh there's no givesy

12:02backsies under glitter oh i know that's all that's a gift to you

12:12potpourri of pastels it looks like a crafty home whenever the previous owner wanted to change

12:18something they didn't remove a thing nothing but layers layers on layers on layers

12:25in terms of awkward features this house has plenty of them but the glitter takes the cake

12:31every time i took something i was like looking at my hands because i thought there'd be glitter

12:34on it the surprise was that bathroom right in the bedroom not a wall not a door not a curtain

12:42nothing midwest

12:47pretty bright future and ugly

12:48and onwards we go across state lines where i find myself in indiana's very own chicago what

13:01welcome to east chicago indiana not quite chicago definitely not illinois among these brick houses is my

13:14next stop on my quest to find the ugliest house in america the owners china and leandre say they have

13:20something special i say we'll see i mean we're coming up on our 100th ugliest house and at this point

13:28i've seen some things

13:29yeah we're gonna have to see what's inside because not a lot happening

13:40hello how are you hi how are you how are you nice to meet you china and leandre yes i'm here to see your

13:49house the entryway is lovely and inviting yeah this is just the beginning noted so we have the living

14:05room this way yes this is our living room let's check out the living room yes

14:10there's nothing to note it's just you know give me some we're here for ugliest house so good luck

14:27my name is china this is leandre and we live in the ugliest house in america in east chicago indiana

14:42i came across this home at 4 a.m i was at work i was like i have to have this so i called him he was

14:48asleep she's like we are going to go look at this house first thing in the morning and once i stepped

14:54in i fell in love with it it wows you it's just very unique on one side it's very normal then you

15:02cross over into this addition it's mostly marble there's a lot of different patterns and textures

15:10all we need is a disco ball and we can party all night long yeah okay we need to get to the ugly

15:17all right next i'll be straight through this door okay

15:28space is much it's spacious dining room

15:36this is your dining yes yes ma'am the original owner he owns a well-known restaurant in east chicago

15:44uh-huh so he decorated to mimic the restaurant the table weighs a literal ton is embedded in the

15:51floor so we cannot move the table even if we wanted to hold on a second

16:01yeah it weighs a ton what is this about we don't know

16:08the gray black theme and then we're like you know what let's splash the color but only on the ceiling

16:14and then our back door looks like our front door you know it's the vibes are definitely off is this

16:20supposed to be a bar mini bar yeah this is our mini bar and that over there

16:27i mean you are a large

16:30this is like someone's fancy grandma's house it's what some might call extra if you think this is extra

16:39wait until you get upstairs

16:54i'm so distressed it's a lot coming at you at once

16:59the columns match the floors you have wallpaper you have tiles you have mirrors that's another

17:11front door yes yes uh so it's that one as well that front door that front door

17:16why so many front doors why so many ornate front doors with locks oh my goodness it is

17:30extra extra grandma extra grandma and then you step up to the bedroom yes more mirrors

17:37more mirrors the bed is embedded in civil war another thing that's stuck we don't know yes it reminds

17:46me of a catholic church well like a disco catholic church like a catholic church next we're going to the bathroom

18:00extra grandma how much did it cost to fill this tub too much yes it takes a long time yeah it's very

18:13dangerous to get out of too yeah you got a trip to come in the bathroom you're gonna trip to go to the

18:18bathroom trip to get into the shower is there a light in there at least no no so you're just trapped in

18:24there yes i've absolutely want it gone every bit they can keep the toilet thank you for showing me

18:32your home thank you for coming all i can think about is how much money was spent for you to be like

18:39we gotta get rid of this it's a market for these things it's a market for anything i'm gonna look at all

18:45the things we can sell

18:47it's always nice to spend time at grandma's marble mansion it looked like someone was trying

18:57to cram as much tile marble and stained glass into a house as possible awkwardness there's too many

19:06places where i could crack my knee just a drop of water and that's it the surprise is every door is an

19:12elaborate front door oh the midwest it's a lot and just like that the midwest has three breathtakingly

19:22ugly contenders but only one house can move on to the finals for a chance at that life-changing home

19:28renovation the midwest took us from the plains of north dakota to the city streets of chicago showing

19:38ugly truly knows no bounds and delivering three worthy contenders vying for their region's ugliest

19:46it's between a castle-like house with a foolish amount of fool's gold that wall is an attention hog

19:53hey you guys did you see me yeah we saw you the victorian house turned art project where all that

19:59glitters is definitely not gold one person's trash is another person's art

20:05and an extravagantly gaudy home full of far too many tiles textures and marble it's a lot coming at

20:14you at once hey folks i'm here to let some lucky homeowners know they have the ugliest house in the

20:24region so here we go joe and ricky ricky and joe how's stuff going in the house glittery yeah about

20:42the same as you left it well that's good because you have the ugliest house in the midwest region

20:48oh that's awesome awesome i think if you move on beyond here you'll obviously hear from me so i'm

21:02vision of ugly but the question remains are you ugly enough my quest across the country is just getting

21:10started and there's no telling what ugly remains to be seen coming up what on earth it literally looks

21:20like she's terrified oh for christmas mirrors on the floor making sure there's no ticks on the privates
