Catholic devotees hold first Sinulog dance of 2026
Devotees break into the first Sinulog dance of the year moments after the Walk with Jesus and the Opening Salvo Mass on Jan. 8, 2026, marking the official start of the 461st Fiesta Señor. Moving to the familiar two-step rhythm, the faithful raised their hands and shouted prayers to Señor Sto. Niño, filling the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño grounds with chants of 'Pit Señor.' The call traces its roots to the Cebuano-Spanish phrase 'Sangpit sa Señor,' meaning a plea to the Child Jesus, and has long served as an expression of gratitude and personal petition among devotees. In the coming days, the celebration will feature a series of major religious activities, including the Walk with the Mayor, the fluvial procession, and the solemn foot procession, leading up to the Fiesta Señor highlights.
