Filipino Catholics self-flagellate for penance during Holy Week

Filipino Catholic devotees walk barefoot and flagellate themselves in Manila on April 2, 2026 as an expression of penance during Holy Week. Devotees whipped their backs with bamboo sticks under the hot sun while some carry heavy wooden crosses, assisted by fellow devotees, in a re‑enactment of Jesus Christ’s suffering. Some devotees believe self‑flagellation can cleanse sins, cure illness or answer prayers. Despite opposition from the Roman Catholic Church, the practice continues in parts of predominantly Catholic Philippines.
