Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games get underway with Opening Ceremonies The first Olympic sporting event ever to take place in Africa held its Opening Ceremonies Saturday (October 31) as the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympics got underway after a four-year postponement. Senegal is the first African country to host an Olympic sporting event, with the Youth Games being attended by just under 2,700 athletes, aged 14-17, from 204 national Olympic committees. The Games were initially set for 2022 but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The ceremony at Abdoulaye Wade Stadium brought together 1,100 performers to celebrate the past, present, and future of Africa using the theme of a young girl named Sitoe. Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Youth Games officially open after being joined onstage by Kirsty Coventry, current International Olympic Committee President and South African former Olympic swimmer.
