CRAYFISH FEAST ON JELLYFISH IN UNDERWATER BUFFET DISPLAY
WITH PIX AND VID
By Shuk Yee Tsang
A group of crayfish were filmed gathering around and feeding on a drifting jellyfish in a rare underwater scene.
The footage was captured by Raul Passarotti, a professional diver from Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina, where the video was filmed beneath the waters off Puerto Madryn.
In the video, several crayfish can be seen picking at the jellyfish’s soft, translucent body, tearing off pieces and passing through the floating mass.
Some of the crayfish even jump upward to grab sections of the jellyfish.
The behaviour highlights the often-overlooked role jellyfish play in marine food webs, acting as a temporary but valuable energy source for a wide range of sea life.
Passarotti, who has spent decades diving in the region, said the behaviour was something he had witnessed before but didn’t initially realise how unusual it might appear to others.
Raul said: “I filmed it because, I thought it was a curious behaviour.
“I honestly wasn’t even going to post the video because I didn’t think it would have the repercussions it had.
“Nothing is lost in the ocean; everything is transformed into energy.”
