02:17here with the texans as they will take on the steelers and with that we uh we start to hear from
02:23uh from coaches and we heard from jim uh jim still on jim more we heard from mike tomlin
02:28uh someone who looks like he's primed to coach into his 70s mike tomlin uh he uh spoke to the
02:34media today and i think we got to talk about this defense first let's hear what mike tomlin thinks
02:40and this is a defensive coach this is a guy cut his teeth as a defensive coordinator with the vikings
02:45and then uh taking over with the steelers for the last 20 years here is mike tomlin who has seen
02:51great defenses talking about the text on the defensive side of the ball they just got a kick butt unit
02:56they do they got a top flight edge tandem in hunter and anderson they got a top flight corner
03:00tandem on the outside and so they rush very well they cover very well they're not trying to split the
03:06atom schematically they don't have to when you have corners and edge rushers like that i'll start
03:12first with the edge rushers will andis are simply most dynamic edge rush tandem in the national
03:17football league in 2025 they got 27 sacks between them i think it's 12 for for anderson 15 for hunter
03:23they're they're they're a formidable group it's nothing that they haven't seen we better stay out
03:27of a bunch of one-dimensional passing circumstances because if we're in those circumstances we're going
03:32to be in trouble and that's just the reality of it they do a good job of being aggressive and
03:36combative in coverage they got a really good secondary petrie their safety slash nickel very
03:41versatile and he displays that versatility on the back end and safety circumstances and also
03:47in his ability to cover and blitz as a nickel they got a real good linebacker tandem man that are
03:51that's highly active and productive they minimize big plays um i was just looking at their statistical
03:57profile their top five and most you know in most statistical categories points i think they're
04:02number one in yards per game they're in the top five and in rush defense and pass defense scoring
04:08yards and so certainly um they've been top tier and elite in just about all areas all year with
04:13that group you don't like that thanks man i love that man i i love it i just i i'm i'm over it like
04:23i mean it's it's it was it's been he's been doing this now for 15 16 17 years i don't remember it's
04:30it's someone just texting and i'm with you trey of texas that the cuts sound like he's ai generated
04:36and i think it sounds that way because he is performing them in the mirror before he goes
04:41uh anyway uh he described in his in his own way the old the old safety profile in his own way
04:55and and broke down this defense which is the the number one defense in football and nothing he said
05:02was wrong uh they are they are great but clint for the texans to be the sexy pick that a lot of
05:13people have and a lot of people believe they have a chance to move on and make a real run and do
05:19something that houston has not seen the texans ever do they need this group to be the great defense that
05:29they have been most of the year and clint they've looked a little normal lately
05:35check that they look closer to normal lately um and the first half right they didn't play in the
05:44second half but clint is it is a tape drop tuesday i'm curious what you saw that first half like riley
05:51leonard and and pierce and downs uh and and that group they it wouldn't even jonathan taylor who you
05:57would think like they they got a little too much rolling just like i don't know about you i felt
06:04like geno smith and the raiders did a little too much in their game here lately for the last five
06:10games the texans have allowed teams to gain over 300 yards of total offense in four of their last five
06:15games and again they have they have still been the best defense in football but it hasn't been
06:24stifling and what the hell are they gonna you gonna do here lately now kamari lassiter was out
06:30of this last game which is a big deal but but clint tomiko knows this and matt burke knows this
06:37they definitely gotta tighten some of this up because the reason why everyone believes this team
06:44can make a huge run is because that defense can just shut teams down and there have been there
06:53have been a i would say four out of these last five games maybe even the last four or five games
06:59i've been a little bit surprised by how much success some of these offenses have had yeah look i i think
07:07there's you know you look at you look at the schedule this year and jacksonville seattle
07:15um arizona las vegas um and look i'm not going to take last week into consideration even though you
07:25can i'm just talking about quarterbacks that that are kind of a little bit longer in a tooth veteran
07:30quarterbacks that have seen you know uh quite a bit if not everything the nfl d nfl defense can throw at
07:37you that typically operate from the pocket similar to the way aaron rogers is going to have to operate
07:42good bad or indifferent i mean those are the kind of quarterbacks that that have had the better days
07:50or let's say better than expected days versus this defense than than the others that when you look at
07:57like the guys like like josh allen who's typically great but plays so much off schedule those guys don't
08:01stand a chance right or you look at guys like like like oh buddy uh bo nicks up in denver who's just he
08:07was bombs away he was just going to he was going to take long shot at long shot long shot and it and
08:11it bit him in the ass and it was low scoring when you look at the guy kind of surgical from the pocket
08:17and they have to be they don't have that that next gear to go be athletic outside the pocket they have
08:22to be surgical from the pocket those guys have found ways to make some plays and hit some bigger
08:26shots down the field and and keep games interesting uh and and a couple of those have fallen of late
08:32right a couple of them have been the more recent games being arizona and in vegas and so you know
08:39i think we're splitting hairs here but i do think that that's the quarterbacks that can just buy a
08:46little bit of time and throw the ball down the field or are the kind of quarterback that can that
08:52can attack this defense that that's a good point because when people try to figure out like what makes
08:57the texans special uh defensively and obviously the pass rush and the and the corners and you pair
09:05those two together i think what you said there and i've been thinking about this is there is no team
09:11that is close to the texans in terms of giving teams problems when they when they go off schedule
09:21like even the best right from josh to mahomes to to i'm sure that lamar would have issues both like
09:30like when they get outside of the pocket like a lot of teams oh hell keep josh in or keep mahomes in
09:39but the texans perform so much better than any other defense when when that happens when they go outside of
09:47control uh you know uh so out of the system so so i think that is a big deal last week rylan leonard
09:56probably stayed in and and try to get on time and minimize the pressure and the sacks watching the
10:03film this morning ron to your point even when he did hold the ball a little bit longer it was a slide
10:08in the pocket a little bit left and then slide up and keep your eyes downfield and make a throw you
10:11know i mean it wasn't a screw it i'm gonna bail i'm gonna bail high and right or high and out
10:17high and back side and and and get on the edges and kind of drift to the sideline the the justin
10:22herberts and allens and and you mentioned pat moan that do that the swarm the swarm aspect of
10:28this defense takes over the minute that they get outside of structure when they're in the pocket and
10:33there's a body on a body and they can the quarterback can just kind of slide around in the pocket
10:37and and let their offensive line stay attached to the pass rusher that's the way you buy a little
10:43bit extra time versus this defense that crap of of of drifting outside the pocket or bailing
10:48outside the pocket that that is a wrap with this defense and so i just i just know aaron rogers and
10:54watching aaron rogers now they may be able to collapse the pocket that's the interesting thing
10:57ron about our defense in houston there are games where will anderson in particular but really across
11:06the board where they just collapse the pocket on top of the quarterback right and the way they did a lot
11:11of times early on against uh justin herbert right and then herbert they got bought a little time in
11:16the second half and was able to make some plays but there's times in the pocket just collapses and
11:21they just overpower everybody and then there's times where daniel and will may still get their sacks
11:28but there's not near the it's not constant pressure it's not constant pressure it's not constant chaos
11:33it's not so somehow at least minimize the collapsing of the pot because if the texans can collapse the
11:41pockets around aaron rogers it's over it's not moving it's a he's not gonna last the whole he's
11:45not gonna last four quarters he's gonna get hurt he's got a bad left hand every time he goes to the
11:48ground he comes up shaking it and going to the sideline so he's just not going to make it right can
11:53they may still eat and get four or five sacks but can they as a whole offensive line keep everything
11:58from just collapsing around aaron rogers then i think the pittsburgh steelers are going to have a shot
12:02if not then they don't they don't even with our offense they're they don't they ain't got a damn
12:07shot in hell so um but it's interesting i know i'm getting off in the weeds here but it's interesting
12:11with our defense is like they've been statistically dominant all year long but if you watch them week
12:19in week out it's the pass rush the collapse the pocket kind of disappears for three or four games
12:24and then comes back right and it's just a i don't know exactly what causes that and i don't know if
12:31domico's got to keep keep them in the well mentality there's also i think a part of these
12:35these teams their game plan is just getting that thing out quick yeah which which which slows
12:40things down for the you know uh in in a big part but like our guy cornbread said every week it's a
12:47different excuse defense don't look the same now all of a sudden the steelers are the greatest
12:51ever lol i no one said anything about the steelers being the greatest uh i would just say there was a
12:58stretch there that titans bills colts chiefs i wasn't sure if teams could get first downs
13:04like they like they like they were stopping teams from getting from even moving the ball
13:12like you're just like these
13:13guys don't these for this run of cardinals raiders chargers colts it's it's like teams
13:23these teams have surprisingly gotten a little bit more action on them right like you know like
13:29the tight end for the cardinals just goes nuts and goes off and they move the ball around and and
13:35there are some there was some points there where you're like hmm i didn't think jacoby percent and
13:40company were gonna do that the the raiders i mean the the raiders scored 21 points in that game
13:45right like they were like two like multiple big plays in that game from geno smith and go watch any
13:50other raiders game i am it is still maybe the most shocking thing that i've seen that the raiders
13:56were able to have that level of success against the best defense well you watch and you watch geno
14:02get just absolutely yeah you just saw yeah you saw before and after the next game he was knocked
14:08out for the season and and the chargers i think they got back to it more but then you could look at
14:14and say well the chargers left some stuff out there you know on on the field no i think a lot of it
14:20had to do with the texas defense and then this it's like like right right and leonard's not
14:25supposed to do that uh against the texans in the first half yeah i i'm yeah i don't know i i i don't
14:31give a damn if kamari laster's in the game or not right pierce is not supposed to do that
14:36oh i agree derrick stingley no i agree repeat it derrick stingley derrick stingley at one point in
14:42the i rewatched it again today derrick stingley got beat by pitman who dropped it on one side of the
14:47end zone and then came right back the next play and got beat by pierce and created big time
14:51separation for riley leonard so oh we just know and you know listening and you can go over and get
14:59pissed off if you want to but we know the way that this team is going to go and move in the postseason
15:06is this defense playing the way that they have played most of the season and the last four weeks
15:14there have been some to me at least some surprises like
15:18kind of surprised by that yeah like i've been looking back there's got to be a penalty somebody
15:24was holding somebody where that happened and that that and i believe this is a good matchup for them
15:31against the steelers i believe that they should be able to suffocate the steelers like they have done
15:36most of the year so i think you're maybe getting a hint on where i'm going in this game
15:40but the rest of the way this defense they got to get back to where they were in that stretch where
15:47josh allen patrick mahomes daniel they couldn't do anything and those teams were were playing
15:53really really well hell the titans game cam ward made one throw he made one play the entire game
15:59right it's so uh and and we know that they have the ability to do that
