00:00A bit fast, Bob. Go take it easy.
00:10There. Nice.
00:15Erm, two birds.
00:17What?
00:18Pungent.
00:19Putrid.
00:20It's beautiful here.
00:21No, your car. What's going on?
00:23Something in the boot.
00:25Shall we?
00:26Do you want to have a look?
00:27Well, we'll get ready. This is a nice-looking...
00:30Beautiful-looking place, isn't it?
00:32Ted, is this stench anything to do with you?
00:34Leave it at that.
00:35If you already tried to smoke them up.
00:37Oh!
00:38What's that?
00:40It can only be described as a residue.
00:42Oh, my God.
00:46That doesn't smell so bad.
00:47Oh, that's bad.
00:49Really? It's more likely to be...
00:51Get your nose in there.
00:53Ready? Go on.
00:55Oh!
00:56What on earth is that?
00:57It's disgusting.
00:58I'm going to leave that outside.
01:00If we could capture that...
01:01Do you want a sweet, by the way?
01:02No, I don't.
01:03Look at this, Bob.
01:06Where do you think you are? Paradise?
01:08Well, I mean, I've never seen the light fall. There's water everywhere, isn't I?
01:13Oh, yeah. This actually is a water meadow. And it is fairly pristine.
01:18What makes something a water meadow?
01:19Well, it's kind of the original habitat, really, that the chalk streams ran through.
01:21And, really, all this land would be irrigated by the chalk stream. Look at it, look.
01:23This is the river Itchin.
01:24Right.
01:25Probably the prettiest of the chalk streams.
01:26So, you've always wanted to come here, yeah?
01:27I have, yeah. Well, here you are.
01:28I've never been to this place, and I've always wanted to come to this exact bit.
01:30It's your birthday as well, Paul.
01:31It is my birthday today, Bob.
01:32A special birth to treat.
01:33And it is fairly pristine.
01:34And it is fairly pristine.
01:35What makes something a water meadow?
01:36Well, it's kind of the original habitat, really, that the chalk streams ran through.
01:39And, really, all this land would be irrigated by the chalk stream. Look at it, look.
01:44This is the river Itchin.
01:45Right.
01:46Probably the prettiest of the chalk streams.
01:48So, you've always wanted to come here, yeah?
01:50I have, yeah.
01:51Well, here you are.
01:52I've never been to this place, and I've always wanted to come to this exact bit.
01:55It's your birthday as well, Paul.
01:57It is my birthday today, Bob.
01:59Special birth to treat.
02:00Yeah.
02:04So, what are we fishing for? Trout, I imagine.
02:06Yep, we are, but wild brown trout.
02:09I would so love to see an Itchin wild brown trout.
02:13Will you concentrate?
02:14I will try it.
02:15Good luck, sir.
02:17Can I step straight down?
02:18Well, you can, yeah.
02:19See, it's not that bad, is it?
02:21Not that bad at all.
02:22Yeah.
02:23Lovely.
02:24Paul, give me a little lesson.
02:26I always forget.
02:27You see some little fish starting around there?
02:32Do you want me to run through the tackle in 26 seconds?
02:35Less than, go on, do it.
02:36Tell me about fly fishing.
02:37Nine foot, four weight, carbon fibre rod.
02:41Real.
02:42Floating line.
02:43You can see it's a plastic technology.
02:44That floats.
02:45That carries the weight that loads the rod.
02:48Attached to that is normal fishing line.
02:50Very thin, thin, thin, tiny, tiny, tiny.
02:53To dry fly.
02:56In this case, a parachute Adam's clink hammer.
03:00Say that.
03:0226 seconds.
03:03Are you happy?
03:04I am very happy.
03:05Are you happy with what you said?
03:06I think it was really good.
03:07And tell me, is there just trout in here?
03:09Grayling, trout.
03:10I saw a little shoulder fish there.
03:12It could have been small grayling.
03:13There might be some dace in here.
03:15I've caught some big grayling out of the lower itching.
03:17You've got some big grayling.
03:19Really big ones.
03:21So there's grayling, yeah?
03:28Show me how to cast a pole.
03:31OK.
03:32Should have seen this grayling.
03:33It's a don't the thing.
03:34Everyone clapped.
03:35There was nobody else there, Bob.
03:36I don't need validation.
03:38Can you see that fly right there?
03:39Yeah.
03:40I see him.
03:41OK.
03:42And the fish are facing.
03:43Facing upstream.
03:44So they're always sort of wary.
03:45They've got to be wary, haven't they?
03:46Don't need to cast too far.
03:47See, like that.
03:48And then you keep in touch with it.
03:49You don't want to be dragging the fly, but any sort of unnapped,
03:52unnatural drag, an official turn away, unless it's something like a big mayfly that's got
04:13impetus and sometimes does skit across the surface, but they're not on the mayfly yet.
04:19I haven't seen a mayfly.
04:21I saw one come off, Oliver.
04:23They'll come off more later in the day than the fish.
04:26The evening is the best time, Bob.
04:28You know what you said?
04:29Because it is for everything.
04:30Like having Malibu.
04:31Exactly.
04:32Evening boo, darling?
04:34An evening boo?
04:35Where would we be without our evening boo, darling?
04:38Splash of soda with your boo, darling?
04:43No, I like it neat.
04:45Those chops were lovely, weren't they?
04:47There you go.
04:48So just that, mate.
04:49Yeah, I've been watching.
04:50I think I went for a...
04:51Ah!
04:52Ah!
04:53Ah!
04:54Yeah, you got me.
04:55First cast, you got me, Bob.
04:56Well, why were you stood there?
04:57Well, out of the line of fire, I thought.
05:00Morning.
05:01Have you got your sunglasses on, Bob?
05:02Yep.
05:03You should be wearing sunglasses when you're casting a fly like this.
05:04Right, go on.
05:05Yeah, not bad.
05:06Well, it's not great, Paul.
05:07It's not bad.
05:08There's a mate fly coming off, look.
05:09See?
05:10There's a mate fly coming off, look.
05:11See?
05:12We're gonna walk up a bit.
05:13Maybe try with a nymph.
05:14Have you got your sunglasses on, Bob?
05:15Yep.
05:16You should be wearing sunglasses when you're casting a fly like this.
05:19Right, go on.
05:21Yeah, not bad.
05:22Well, it's not great, Paul.
05:24It's not bad.
05:25There's a mate fly coming off, look.
05:27There's a mayfly coming off, look.
05:32See?
05:40We're gonna walk up a bit, maybe try with a nymph.
05:57That's right.
06:17Come on, you puss.
06:21Nope.
06:28Yep.
06:29You in?
06:30Yep.
06:31Good fish.
06:32There's a trout.
06:33I think so, yeah.
06:34Nice, wild trout.
06:35Actually, I'm not sure why it's fighting, Bob.
06:37It might be a grayling.
06:40That's a grayling, isn't it?
06:41I haven't seen him yet.
06:44Yeah, it's grayling.
06:45They're so strong.
06:46Aren't they?
06:49Got him.
06:50Well done, Bob.
06:52Well, that was a nice session.
06:54God, look at that.
06:55Not actually in season, but what a lovely accident, eh?
06:59What a powerful fish.
07:00Look at that.
07:01Look at this fin.
07:03Lilac and pink.
07:04The most beautiful fish.
07:07Probably that swims in our waters.
07:09Incredible.
07:11There we go.
07:13Go on, then.
07:15And away he goes.
07:16That's a birthday treat, people.
07:17What?
07:18I didn't think of that.
07:19Of course it is, eh?
07:20What a birthday treat.
07:21Yeah, that's the biggest grayling I've seen by a long, long way.
07:24Yeah.
07:25I know you've got big graylings, but, yeah.
07:27Oh, well done.
07:28No, but the itching has served me well for grayling.
07:30Yeah.
07:31Thank you, itching.
07:32How beautiful.
07:33Well done.
07:34Let's have a cuppa, yeah?
07:35Yeah.
07:36Hey, look at the, do you see the light playing on that tree trunk over there?
07:49Yeah.
07:50Lovely, isn't it?
07:53And that one there, look at that.
07:54Oh, that's a cracker.
07:55It's a light shower, isn't it?
07:56Nice one.
07:57Yeah.
07:58Good spot.
07:59Can you hold that?
08:00Because I've got to be honest with you, Paul, you know my rather sweaty bag?
08:05Yeah.
08:06This sugar has spilt, so I'm having to pick it out of my bag.
08:11What, granule by granule?
08:13Yeah, literally.
08:14Here we are in this bucolic heaven, and you're...
08:21Do you do any jogging, Paul?
08:26I don't, Bob.
08:27Do you know, I did a little bit of an inadvertent, accidental jogging with the dog the other day,
08:33and I thought, my jogging days are over.
08:35They're over.
08:36I could do exercise for quite a long time, but low impact.
08:39Bike.
08:40Cross trainer.
08:41But, you know.
08:42I, erm...
08:43I like jogging me jeans, just in me clothes.
08:46If I go out for a run, I'm not going to get gear on and all that.
08:50It's just as good for your running, even if you haven't got sports gear on.
08:54Well, yeah, of course it is.
08:55Yeah.
08:56You don't have to wear sports gear.
08:58Yeah.
08:59It works just as well.
09:00Just in your jeans or in a nice top, in a blouse or something.
09:05Or a full, erm...
09:07PJ.
09:08Morning.
09:09What I'm saying, Paul, is...
09:11Yes, I know what you're saying, but you...
09:13It works just as well.
09:14You don't have to have lycra.
09:16No, you don't.
09:17And striping.
09:18But you try stretching in jeans.
09:20I'm not going stretching.
09:21I'm going jogging.
09:22Unless you've got...
09:23Yeah, but after you're jogging, I hope you stretch.
09:25No, I've never stretched in my life.
09:27Oh, I have leant up really high, cos I can...
09:29Yeah, you like to go up high, don't you?
09:31No, my top cabinet has got me ringos and me watsits.
09:33So I have to reach up to that.
09:37Right.
09:41Very nice.
09:42I've enjoyed that cup of tea, Paul.
09:43Shall we fish on, try and get a brown trout?
09:45Yeah, definitely.
09:46Let's do it.
09:50Go on, then.
09:51Walk out here a bit further.
10:06And try a couple of casts under a tree.
10:08With these trout, you can probably keep the line a bit even tighter, you know?
10:16Nice cast, Bob.
10:18You've got to be quicker than that with the liner.
10:20OK.
10:22And if you see the line move back upstream, that's when you get to strike, right?
10:26That's nice.
10:33There's a decent trout out there, but that's not far from it.
10:35He's turned around and got it.
10:36He's got it!
10:37Strike!
10:38Argh!
10:39He didn't up it.
10:40He...
10:41Well, he did.
10:42Oh, yeah.
10:43Sorry.
10:44Saw his mouth open, grabbed it.
10:46Oh, I suppose you saw him say,
10:47Mmm, lovely.
10:48Yeah.
10:50I actually did, believe it or not.
10:59You OK?
11:00Yeah, I think so.
11:01Do you like watching me fish?
11:02Yeah.
11:03You can learn, can't you?
11:04Yeah.
11:05Some of the stuff I'm doing is very advanced.
11:06It's very subtle.
11:07Yeah.
11:08It's...
11:09You'd almost think...
11:10You don't know what he's doing, that bloke.
11:11Ooh, there's a fish over there, Paul.
11:12Right, we'll cast to it.
11:15I'm in.
11:16You're in?
11:17He's in.
11:18Yes!
11:19Yes!
11:20Yes!
11:21Yes!
11:22Do you see that?
11:23Yes!
11:24Well done, Bobby.
11:25Right.
11:26He's gone.
11:27What?
11:28He's gone.
11:29You screaming.
11:30I love the way you blame me for that.
11:31Come on, Bob.
11:32Whoa, whoa, whoa!
11:33Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
11:34Whoa!
11:35Whoa, whoa!
11:36Look at that, check it out!
11:37There you go!
11:38Look at him gun, as you would say.
11:39Whoa, whoa, whoa!
11:43Whoa!
11:44Whoa, whoa, whoa!
11:45Whoa!
11:46Look at that, check it out!
11:47blame me for that come on Bob check it out look at him gun as you would say we've got a lovely
12:03accommodation Paul have we yeah it's got like a bonus factor that I think will appeal to you
12:10okay don't it oh he's looking older than us good boy
12:24it's like being on escape to the country in it Paul this is it and what's our budget
12:29you probably watch it religiously don't you I have never missed an episode
12:35I think you're gonna like it oh riverside lodge I think I'd call it pond side the river Avon
12:50just there just there and this is a pond yeah it's full of fish so we could have see the veranda there
12:59we can have a little fish and some beer okay lovely Ted's arriving in style isn't he yeah well he's
13:04absolutely knackered he's had a long day in the Sun what a beauty this is great ain't it
13:21this is amazing adventure for Ted now looking out of these ducks because he's nearly our age you know
13:2663 he is so he's probably aging better than us shut up they're scared of him not there's
13:34bread there and they're not coming to get it it's Ted I think I probably have aged better than you
13:40Paul what do you say to that I don't think so no no I think I'm assisted by me big fat head
13:46maybe I'm a bit more gaunt and wrinkly I've done those exercises all my life yeah you doing your
13:56brother De Niro no without your new teeth yeah excellent where'd you get them done dentist yeah
14:01but where turkey no all right because that's what they say in it turkey turkey teeth yeah what did
14:07you ask for can I have some teeth at work listen that's how do that can you do that with your teeth
14:16no because they'd crumble wouldn't they they'd crumble like an Edinburgh rock Bob yeah look at
14:24this exquisite creature look you've got a mayflower on your back there Paul have I yeah be nice if that
14:31mayfly and that mayfly met oh I see what you mean yeah I know you're out of the game now but if you're
14:38being a bit flirty shows your flirty face would you like me to be the lady yeah go on in hi no no
14:45don't you don't know I'm coming yeah you're just sitting oh I'm just sat sat here like a lady look
14:49over this way right then suddenly watch this
14:51what's your name it doesn't matter it doesn't matter I'll take what it is you've got go on now you
15:03I'll be the lady right this is so lovely I love these colours of the flowers don't you
15:09oh hello officer happy birthday Paul thanks Bob cheers to you
15:3967 it's gonna brighten up later Paul it's supposed to brighten up later we can slowly make our way to the river
16:04we might meet a friend of mine called Jim Murray he's trying to save the chalk stream salmon the
16:11numbers have declined like incredibly just drops off the scale and he's campaigning and shouting
16:17about it he's slightly too handsome for my liking well I don't like the sound of that no how was your
16:23health by the way I should ask I haven't seen you for a bit pretty good Bob oh you know I've got
16:27most a real problem is my foot me left foot I've got orthotics in in your slip-ons yeah and
16:33they help a bit and how are you at the moment Bob you can always claim that you're in rude good
16:39health not bad shingles still lingering shingle ling from beyond the grave yeah it's messed up my
16:45muscles in my leg but yeah you know you have to have an attitude of gratitude don't you could be so
16:49much worse that's true actually I mean look at your face you've got a look at that every morning yeah
16:56geez I mean you've at least you've enhanced your teeth haven't you hey have you seen how long they
17:03oh no it's quite something in it come on we'll leave the main flight offend for itself yep get down to the
17:16river yeah come Ted
17:30come on Teddy we're going this way I'll get that wild brown trout don't you worry well you know this
17:35is the kind of crucible of Victorian and Edwardian heated debate about fly fishing Bob what was the
17:43crux of the debate whether it is nobler to use the dry fly or the nymph what do you reckon well I can't
17:49do the dry fly in it so I'd like to use whichever method catches a fish you know exactly it was a silly
17:55debate that they had
18:00why don't we start here and we can work your way I can't see any rises so get out a little bit and try
18:13it's sort of upstream but sort of towards it just remember to check behind you as you cast just keep
18:19in touch with it watch the indicator that's great leave that there okay
18:24oh that's how to present don't touch it let's leave that
18:38good luck mate I thought you'd get something there
18:45hey boss you have a go sir right I suppose Ted's out boss isn't he isn't he well he thinks he is
19:00I suppose we haven't had a single tug Bob it's frustrating isn't it it's difficult difficult it is
19:14all right nothing doing here I'm going to uh go for a wander see if I can find Jim Jim Murray a guy I was telling you about right oh yeah you're all over him yeah he's better looking than you mate
19:41I don't think so I think you'll find he is that's you later
19:58Medjib mr. Whitehouse come and join me look at him he looks handsome even from here I hate him
20:06hello Paul you do well there good better work out for the quads isn't it mate yeah lovely join me thank
20:17you all right well nice to see you Jim this and this is your manor this is my manor oh look his hair I
20:23know oh could I have some of that just aren't just a few so Jim we know you from the crown and masters of
20:33the air I mean I know you as a as a fisherman that wasn't quite what I was okay yes as an angler fellow angler but also in recent years a an activist angler
20:45yeah so the chalk stream salmon as you know uh but many don't are a very very uh rare and very depleted yeah so project white heart is a brand new
20:55salmon restoration campaign across both the flagship chalk streams are testing the itching and we are conducting a huge audit to find out exactly what the problems are for the salmon which will take 12 to 18 months
21:07um we're fronting up to try and bring them back only 133 came over the counter last year on the itching which
21:13is unsustainable I mean I know it's a controversial area because it's so the salmon is so specific to its natal river
21:21isn't it it has to come back yeah to the river of its birth so why can't you just use the indigenous
21:27stock from the itching grow those on till they're fry and release them into the river well so recently
21:32I've learned that you can't if you just took eggs from a salmon that came into the itching that salmon
21:37might be a salmon that spawns a quarter of a mile up river right and if you then put that salmon back
21:43here yeah you're going to mess with the really yeah that specific you've got to be you've got to be really
21:49careful when you mess with nature do you hold out hopes for you know of success for the salmon well
22:13because they're in decline everywhere so you know I think you do need some radical action well I would
22:18call this radical action because before this no one was really doing anything and I think once we
22:23get the audit and the results in it might well be that we do some stocking there's no point in going
22:29in headfirst hand-fisted until we know exactly what the problem is how long will it take to get them back
22:34to sustainability can we do it what I do know is that the sound will be here long after we're gone
22:39well I hope so mate um where does that passion of yours come from for me what the reason why I want
22:47to give back to the rivers is because my wife and I lost our first child Ella Jane to a congenital heart
22:54disease in 2009 and the only way I could get over that the only thing that helped me was fishing from
23:03being in rivers some people have therapy some people talk to friends some people see this is heaven this is
23:12this was my this was my church I know that sounds a bit woo but it worked for me play mate so
23:19so it helped me so I want to I want to give back I guess yeah
23:26so you told him this should stock of salmon in here yeah I did yeah what a peasant well no he does
23:41think we need to stock salmon but there needs to be so who are you Trump you think it's as simple as
23:46that just put salmon in there why not put salmon in the river if there are any salmon in the river
23:52simple equation put the salmon in the river just go to the fishmongers put the salmon salmon in the
23:58salmon in the river job done that's you in it yeah we'll be cloud over there Paul we could be in
