Tens of thousands of cats and dogs are surrendered to the pound system each year, but a new charity is working to keep pets out of the pound by funding vital care for owners who can't afford it. And it's already made a difference in hundreds of New South Wales households.

00:03Jetta the Staffy Cross is the light in Julie Tebby's life.
00:07But when she had a fall that left her bed bound for months,
00:12she was scrambling to get Jetta care.
00:15That's when she got the help she needed.
00:18I had asked her old foster carer, Lisa,
00:23to come and take her and look after her
00:27and that was through the Stay Foundation.
00:29Along with emergency boarding care,
00:33the Foundation also funds vital vet treatment
00:36that owners can't afford,
00:38such as vaccinations and desexing.
00:41The main goal is to keep pets out of shelters
00:43and keep them home with the people who love them.
00:46When Tracey Johansson's three dogs kept escaping from her yard,
00:50she was able to access funding for a cage installation.
00:55Recently, the council gave me a warning that I might be relinquished.
01:01I've been through a lot of trauma in my life
01:03and the dog's always there for me.
01:05They don't judge.
01:07Rathmines Veterinary Hospital is one of several vets
01:10offering its services to the Foundation for a discounted rate.
01:14It really is one cat desexing, one dog desexing at a time.
01:19But each one you do, you're potentially saving a hundred lives from suffering.
01:23Dr Clifford works with several animal rescue charities,
01:27but says not all of them focus on whole-of-picture support.
01:31The charity is looking to expand beyond the Hunter and Central Coast,
01:37keeping more vulnerable pets out of the pound.
