The night sky will be illuminated by moonlight during the first weekend of 2026. The Super Wolf Moon, the first supermoon of the year, will rise on 5:03 a.m. EST on Jan. 3 and will shine into Jan. 4.
Transcript
00:00The Super Wolf Moon arrives Saturday, January 3rd at 5.03 a.m. Eastern Time.
00:10It's the first supermoon of 2026, and you won't see another one until November.
00:14So look east at dusk on January 3rd and 4th for the best view.
00:18And if you wonder why it's called the Wolf Moon?
00:24Well, it's because people once thought wolves howled more in early winter because they were hungry.
00:29But it's actually a myth.
00:31Wolves howled to communicate to find pack members, strengthen bonds, mark territory, and coordinate hunts.
00:35But no matter what you want to call the full moon, check the AccuWeather app to see how the forecast could impact your view.
