00:01Here we go for it!
00:02Let's get going!
00:03Come on in we go!
00:04Oh my gosh I love it so much!
00:07Stunning!
00:08Look at this Ralph
00:09Yeah!
00:10Thank you!
00:11Taking on extraordinary builds
00:14Look at that it's over the house
00:16Hello!
00:17For even more extraordinary people
00:19Here we go
00:21I didn't think I'd ever get upstairs again
00:25Send all the builders down
00:28Along with our secret weapon
00:30It's like an army
00:31It's a lot of people isn't it?
00:32They're still coming!
00:33The great British public
00:35I'm excited!
00:37I didn't know I had this many friends
00:40Are we up for it?
00:41Yeah!
00:42Let's get outside!
00:44This time
00:45I don't want it swinging into the steel work
00:47Stop it there! Stop it there!
00:50We're taking on one of our most challenging community builds
00:53Why would you do that?
00:54I got emotionally involved if I'm truly honest
00:56The job's so huge
00:58I can't see where I'm going
01:00Even the gladiators are pitching in
01:02I'm just glad I could put the muscles to use
01:05Where's the sewer gone?
01:06That's what we're trying to plan
01:07We shouldn't be doing this today
01:09It looks like a war zone at the moment
01:11Now at what point do you say
01:13I'm sorry I failed
01:14We just can't deliver what I said we could
01:16Because it was just too much in the end
01:17I'm off to beat the team at Cherry Tree Community Centre
01:31In East Riding in Yorkshire
01:32During Covid they needed to change their youth club
01:36Into a food pantry
01:38And since then they haven't been able to change it back
01:41It means they have nowhere for their young people to go anymore
01:44So they've asked us to come up
01:45Have a look see if we can help out
01:50We're down to one camping chair
01:53We are helping and supporting children and young people
02:04From the age of nine
02:06Never mind you can soon get back in
02:08It's always so so busy here
02:10And fun and never ever dull
02:13Go Nando
02:16We have a range of activities that we can put on for them
02:19Rounders, dodgeball
02:20Good one this team
02:21Football
02:22Right, right
02:23Can we do a game of football as well?
02:26Yes
02:27We've got a ball
02:28They're good kids
02:29They just need a place to come
02:31Have we got four
02:32Against these two?
02:33Yes
02:34Alright I like that
02:35At the moment our sessions
02:37They're not structured
02:39You can't really be structured when you don't have a place to be
02:44Oh, unlucky
02:50We run now a youth club in the park currently
02:54We have our gazebo
02:55We set that up
02:56In the winter it's quite dreadful to be honest
03:00Raining, snowing
03:02Hi, do you want some pizza?
03:04Go see Josh there then
03:09This area is in the bottom 15% of deprivation in the country
03:18Everybody's struggling
03:19When you do fall into poverty
03:21Children do suffer
03:22We speak to many kids who have not eaten anything for days
03:24Please can she just have food?
03:26Yes
03:28We know the need is there
03:30We know they don't all have hot food to eat that night
03:34There are young people who don't have trusted adults to go to
03:38I run the sessions now but I was one of the young people myself
03:45I used to be a young carer
03:47At home it was quite difficult carrying the sort of responsibilities of the family
03:53So coming to Cherry Tree sort of gave me an escape from that
03:57I've been where they are
03:59For the past five years Joe and Fiona have been doing all they can to find a new base for the youth club
04:14I'm begging for places
04:15I'm just asking for one room for these kids
04:18But nobody listens
04:19I need ovens
04:20I need ovens
04:21I need ovens
04:22What is a good thing?
04:23It's not ovens
04:25If we can't find somewhere for the youth club to have a home
04:30I do dread
04:32Where the young people will turn to
04:34Because there is nowhere else for them
04:36I'm heading to meet Joe who manages all the charity services
04:44A little food shop
04:45Hello
04:46Hello
04:47Hi Nick
04:48In the building where the youth club used to be
04:50So it's a food pantry?
04:53A food pantry yes
04:54But we thought the pantry would only be here for six months in lockdown
04:58But we are feeding 1,548 members
05:02Wow
05:03You can't just close that down
05:04No
05:05There must be somewhere else that you could have the youth club
05:07We're homeless
05:08We're on the park
05:09It's been really difficult in the winter months
05:11I've gone through six gazebos
05:13I've got that many
05:14A gazebo in the winter?
05:15Yeah it's awful
05:16It's awful
05:17Have you got anything at all?
05:18Yes so we've got these shipping containers we've had donated to us
05:21And we've had planning permission
05:22So we can put out containers on the park
05:25So they're going to allow you to build something
05:27You've just got to get the something built?
05:30Yes
05:31I think I'd better have a look at them
05:34So it's this big one here
05:36Well these ones here?
05:37Yeah
05:38They look like they've been around forever
05:39Look at them
05:41And the door's battered
05:45I mean they look reasonably watertight
05:47I don't know how much life they've got left in them
05:51All the way along the seams
05:52They're all heavily eaten with rust
05:56I don't think they're worth the time
05:59The money to repair
06:02And I wouldn't be able to guarantee
06:04That they'd last any length of time if we did
06:07They're just not good enough I'm afraid
06:10These are all I've got
06:12And this is the only hope I've had
06:14I suppose it's just home truth today isn't it?
06:18Can I still come along and meet the kids?
06:20Yeah
06:25The charity have planning permission to build a club in this park
06:28Hello
06:29Hi
06:30Nice to meet you
06:31Nice to meet you
06:32But they don't have the funds to achieve their dream
06:35Listen I'd get into it if I was you
06:36Because these chips are going to be freezing in no time at all
06:39Hello
06:40Can I ask you a question?
06:41Yeah
06:42Is that alright?
06:43So why do you come along and join in?
06:44It's fun
06:45And what are the people like that run it?
06:46They're always there if you need them
06:48And like they're always there to help you and stuff
06:50What sort of things can you talk to them about?
06:52Anything like literally anything
06:53Really?
06:54Why do you come and join in?
06:55Because it's fun
06:56I'm over here
06:57Yeah
07:00And what do you think about the idea of building a permanent structure?
07:04It'd be good because then we wouldn't be as cold
07:06It would get us off the streets
07:08Too many people on the streets
07:09What's the best thing?
07:10The games? The pizza? The friends? What's the best thing?
07:12I like pizzas
07:14Yeah, I like pizzas too to be honest
07:16But are there lots of things around here for you to go and do and join in with?
07:19Not so much
07:20Right
07:21So this is quite important is it?
07:23Yeah, it's very important
07:29How many kids do you get along to this?
07:31Up to 150
07:33So what are they coming here for? Are they coming to play football? Are they coming for a slice of pizza?
07:37A little bit of everything
07:38Some of it's a check-in
07:40I need to catch up with you
07:41Different dilemmas
07:42We're here for all of that
07:44The need is huge and endless
07:47And going forward setting in a gazebo is not the right place
07:50No
07:51It's freezing here, my feet are frozen
07:53Yeah, well it's hard work actually
07:55It's hard work being out here when you're cold
07:58And we need the toilet to have a place would be incredible
08:05It never fails to amaze me how many people you meet as you go around the country
08:08All voluntarily doing amazing things in communities like this
08:12Very often without the support they need
08:14There's no buildings, there's no sewerage, there's no electric, there's no water
08:19There's nothing at all, literally nothing
08:21But it's needed
08:23Mental health
08:24Support
08:25One of the worries about school
08:26Kids that haven't eaten
08:31Shouldn't have to be in a gazebo should it?
08:33Okay, so the reason that I came here was to find out what you had
08:45And it turned out you haven't got anything at all
08:48And the piece of land here is going to be really difficult to work with
08:52But it is very clear that there is an absolute need here
08:55So under those circumstances and because I've been watching the kids playing football
08:59And joining in and watching them shiver under a gazebo
09:04The only decision we can make is that we will come and do it
09:22I don't know how we're going to do it
09:23I don't know what to say
09:28I haven't done anything yet
09:32I think it's amazing
09:33Alright, well I've made a promise now so I'll see you in a few weeks time
09:37It's amazing, thank you so much
09:38Thank you
09:39Thank you
09:40Thank you
09:41Wow
09:43It's like just grabbed me by the heart
09:45And it took me straight back to my youth
09:46And thinking how important it would have been
09:48For me to have had that opportunity to have a youth club
09:51And what it would have done for the kids on my estate
09:53I'm just going to break it to the team now that I've said yes
09:55I don't have a clue how we're going to do this one
09:57Really? I should have said no, but how do you say no?
10:02There is quite a big hole so shall we get some hammer fencing up?
10:13Yeah, let's put some up
10:14Three months of planning and preparation have passed since I was last in East Riding
10:19Yeah, go here
10:21Go on the angle
10:22Yeah, that's fine
10:23We've also used the time to lay concrete foundations
10:28Morning
10:29Jo, Chloe, Fiona, how you doing?
10:30Hello
10:31Hello
10:32So excited
10:33Ready to meet the people that are going to do this?
10:34Yeah
10:35Yes
10:36Go on
10:37Building an entire youth centre from scratch in eight days will take a monumental effort
10:42That local tradespeople and volunteers have arrived ready to help
10:49So many people
10:54It's amazing, I can't believe it
10:59I can't believe how many people are giving up their time
11:05I've been running this youth group out of my car for years
11:10For me, it's a game changer
11:12A youth centre can make such a difference
11:16So thank you so much
11:18So I used to come to the youth club when I was younger
11:21And now I work for the youth club
11:24And I don't know where I'd be if I didn't ever come to the youth club
11:31It opened up so many more opportunities for me
11:36And I just want to be able to do that for all the other young people
11:41And this is one of many which you can make that difference to
11:44So thank you all so much
11:46Thank you
11:47Thank you
11:48Thank you
11:50Thank you
11:54I grew up in a place like this
11:55The kind of places that people say
11:57Oh, don't bother building anything nice there
11:59It will just get destroyed
12:01You have to build stuff in tough places
12:03You have to make a difference
12:04You have to change
12:17I didn't expect it could get me
12:21You will make this happen
12:23You will change the futures of young people around here
12:26With what we're about to do
12:29Are we up for it?
12:30Yeah
12:31Let's get outside
12:38We need to get that crane as soon as possible
12:39We do
12:45So we've got the crane here to lift the steel in
12:47It's fast, isn't it?
12:48This is what I love
12:52There's a lot of beeping
12:53So we have a steel frame, right?
12:56Yep
12:57So the steel frame goes in
12:58Yeah
12:59Then we've got block work
13:00Yeah
13:01Then we can drop a timber roof on top of that
13:03My concern is if we don't reach that point today
13:06Yeah
13:07Even on day one we could be in trouble
13:08Yeah
13:09So basically I have volunteered us to do a complete ground up in a field brand new build on a site that's got no services at all
13:26Oh here we go
13:27We haven't got any electric, haven't got any water and we haven't got any like anywhere for the sewage to go
13:33Why? Why would you do that?
13:35I got emotionally involved if I'm truly honest and felt we couldn't walk away from it
13:40So it starts with two sea containers and they will sit either end of a steel frame and then timber frame infill
13:48And then we're going to put basically a glazed section in between
13:51The charity's shipping containers weren't fit for purpose but they were part of the planning permission
13:57So we've had to get two new ones that will form the ends of a steel frame building with floor to ceiling glass windows
14:04We're filling this with lovely fun things like stages
14:07Yeah, we really want to give them a space where they can dream, where they can have fun
14:12We've got a cinema screen
14:13But food poverty is a massive problem in this neighbourhood
14:17And that's one of the main things that this charity deals with
14:20They don't want any child to leave this place hungry
14:22With that in mind one of the containers will house a kitchen to help feed any children who've been missing meals
14:29There will also be a breakout room ideal for private conversations
14:34The main hub will be an open-plan multi-purpose space with a central stage
14:39While the second container will have a storeroom and toilets
14:45Everything in this building needs to have a double function
14:48This stage you can fold it up because they need to do sports in there and crafts
14:52You know, this needs to work for everything
14:54Cupboards that are sort of make-up stations
14:56Sounds like that requires quite a bit of bespoke joinery
14:58To make sure that then everything is set out exactly as they need
15:01But also what I really like is an amazing outdoor kitchen
15:04Yes
15:05Also an outdoor gym
15:06Anything that gets kids outside and being active has got to be a good thing, right?
15:10Exercising in the fresh air, can't get better than that
15:12And then the rest of the space we need to do something really fabulous with
15:15What I'm thinking is edible plants
15:18Food growing is so important for kids, education
15:21And we're then able to feed them from the garden
15:23Yeah, absolutely
15:24I think this would be brilliant
15:26So let's concentrate on the young people
15:28Go on!
15:29Let's go for this
15:30Yes!
15:31That was so good!
15:32Off you go then, son
15:34Now I'm on holiday
15:36Come on!
15:37Let's go!
15:38Until this is art
15:42I just feel like a sort of, I don't know
15:44Expectant father pacing around at a waiting room
15:51All of a sudden somebody's ordered a wheelbarrow army
15:53Actually at the front of the wheelbarrow army
15:55There's some people I wanted to say hello to
15:57Bolstering our ranks are three gladiators
16:00Tom and Listers, AKA Hammer and Cyclone
16:03Nice to see we got you to work straight away
16:05It's good of you to come along
16:07And Fury, real name Jodie, who's leading the charge
16:10I'm from up north, I'm from Dewsbury
16:13Right
16:14So it feels very familiar
16:16Like when I was growing up
16:17I sort of came to a park like this
16:19I think young kids need that
16:20And it's made a big impact on my life
16:22So I just think that's really cool
16:24That we've been able to do something like that
16:26It's just nice to help
16:27Also Tom, as your gladiator name is Hammer
16:29It seems appropriate
16:31And Renee was in
16:32Any wars that need knocking down
16:34Well I tell you what
16:35I am also going to lean on your fame a little bit
16:36Because we've been trying to get hold of some more fitness equipment
16:39Could we use you guys to maybe put some shout outs on social media and things
16:43To see if we can get people to go
16:44Yeah we'll come forward and we'll donate some stuff
16:46And we use you that way as well
16:47Is that alright?
16:48Yeah absolutely
16:49Thank you
16:50Thank you very much
16:51Doing all this for the youth club is incredible
16:54This is the centre of this community
16:56I can see how something like this would have a huge impact
17:00I think for kids to have that opportunity and just bring them together
17:03And get out of the house
17:04Meet new people
17:05In the gym
17:06Like it's just going to be unreal for them
17:08We are here with DIY SOS
17:10Helping them build the most amazing youth club
17:13The only thing is that we don't have the gym equipment
17:16We need your help
17:17Any support, connections you have
17:19We need you
17:20Back to work you pair
17:21Come on
17:22Our steel frame is on track to be up by day's end
17:28We're going to have to just conveyor belt through a whole bunch of walls
17:31But the timber structure we need to fit inside it tomorrow
17:35Squeeze in there a little bit
17:36Has hit a snag
17:37So when's the timber frame arriving?
17:39Well that's the issue
17:41Is that while we thought that a company was going to be able to be prefabbing all the timber framing we need for this build
17:46Instead we weren't able to find that and we have to build a factory on site
17:50And the issue is that all that has to get done in about a day and a half
17:53That way
17:55That way
17:56Radar and his carpentry team need to build 18 timber frames on site
18:01You want ten and a longer length?
18:03Short ones
18:04Perfect
18:05A job that would take much longer in a factory
18:08There's a lot going on
18:10There's no way you should be able to do this in that time
18:12But we've got so much
18:14We've got a lot of people here
18:15But everything needs to fall into place
18:17Otherwise it will fail
18:18Starting with no building brings a whole load of issues
18:25Even the most basic utilities have to be installed
18:29This was a field, a play park
18:31Where's the electric?
18:33Where's the water?
18:34How's it getting here?
18:35So we've got power guys sorting that
18:37Right
18:38And the water is behind you
18:39In a duct
18:40Wait what about sewage though?
18:41You see that house there?
18:42And we're putting the sewage into their garden
18:44That's where the nearest sewer pipe is to tap into
18:46Yeah
18:47So we've basically got
18:48But you've run that past the homeowner
18:50But you're going to have to probably just go over
18:51And just a little tap on the door
18:53Okay
18:54We haven't run it past it yet
18:55No
18:56Can you just pop over and say hello?
18:57What if she says no?
18:58I don't know to be honest with you
18:59But that's the only place we can tap into
19:01All right
19:02I'll go and have a word
19:03All right
19:04Cheers Nick
19:05I think I've just been done
19:10Well I guess this is the one
19:17Hello
19:19Hello
19:21Hello
19:22Hello
19:23I'm Nick
19:24Hello I'm Angie
19:25Hello Angie how are you?
19:26I'm fine thank you
19:27I've got a bit of a request
19:29With the thing that we're building
19:30You know what we're building over there
19:31The trouble is the only place we can tap into the sewage works
19:34Is in your back garden
19:35Okay
19:36Can I have a look?
19:37And I can show you
19:38You don't have to say yes or no straight away
19:40So we'd have to take up some of your pathway
19:43Which means we'd have to move your shed
19:45And then take a bit of the fence out
19:47I promise you
19:49That we will make it good
19:50We'll make the grass good
19:52We'll make the pathway good
19:53Are you sure on this?
19:55This is the only way we can do it
20:01Okay
20:02Yeah
20:03I'll go with it
20:04Because it's something for the kids
20:05And that is what the kids need
20:06Something to do
20:07So I'll out with you
20:08Really?
20:09I will yes
20:10Really?
20:11Yes
20:12Yes I will
20:13Can I have a hug?
20:14Yes
20:15That's amazing
20:16Do you know what?
20:17The fact that she said
20:18The youngsters need somewhere around here
20:20Just gives you an idea
20:21Of how people understand what's going on
20:23So massive result
20:25While our excavation team search for a sewage pint
20:28See if we're going to enjoy here then
20:30A giant donation has arrived
20:33I've been told that the sea containers
20:35Yes
20:36Are nearby
20:37Are nearby
20:44Look at that
20:45Look at the size of those things
20:46Only just baited it under the telephone wires
20:51What we need
20:52Is we need that shipping container
20:53Tight up against those stills
20:55The main building framework is up
20:57Now we need to crane our two shipping containers
21:02Into place at either end
21:04The key point is the wind
21:08That we don't get a sudden gust
21:10We've got to make sure we're very very gentle
21:12And we don't knock any of the block work off
21:14Any of the stills or anything
21:15Anything really
21:16That's it
21:17All right
21:18Let's go have a look
21:19Each container weighs 2.7 tons
21:21Have your wits about you everyone
21:23Any collision could cause permanent damage
21:25To the container wall
21:26Or make the steel frame structurally unsound
21:29Oh, I can't bear it
21:30This is why I hate men
21:31It's just that there's no margin for error
21:33And it just makes me so stressed
21:35I can't even watch it
21:41The wind's getting up
21:42You can see it with the trees moving
21:46God, it'll be very, very careful of you
21:52Oh, watch the bang
21:56Oh, Jesus Christ
22:00I can't bear it
22:01Whoa, whoa, whoa, a little
22:03Tell him to come down
22:04Down
22:05Yeah, but hang on
22:06I don't want it swinging into the steel work
22:13Down, down
22:14I'll put you down so we can get her arms on it
22:16Just get your edge on it
22:17All right, we got it
22:18Stop it there
22:19Stop it there
22:20Steady, steady, nice and steady now
22:21Just everyone got control of it
22:22Just everyone watch the block work and everything else
22:26Oh, that way
22:27It's water and steel
22:28Yep
22:29Is it stuck on?
22:30Yeah
22:31He's got it down
22:32He's clear now
22:33He's clear, you're good
22:34Yeah
22:35That was hairy
22:36Yeah
22:37To me, to me
22:38Whoa, whoa, whoa
22:39You've gone the other way
22:40Back to me, to me
22:41Back to me
22:42Back to me
22:43There
22:44There, there
22:45There, there, there
22:46There, there, there
22:47Drop it down
22:48Drop it down
22:49Good, good, good
22:50Good, good
22:51That's one in
22:54Now we've got to do it all over again on the second one
22:57And it's half past eight
23:00I mean, everyone's been putting such a shift today
23:02I can't tell you what a joy it is to work with these people
23:04Like, the enthusiasm and the dedication is incredible
23:07I love it
23:08I love, love, love it
23:09It doesn't matter how long the day is, I love it
23:17To the millimetre
23:18Well done, guys
23:30Can I have a poached egg on toast, please, my darling
23:32What?
23:33One poached egg
23:35Yeah, just like, breakfast
23:37Out of eight eggs in an omelette, please
23:40Yeah, I mean
23:41Not twelve
23:43Ten
23:44Just compromise in the middle
23:45Ten eggs for me
23:48With the main building, steel structure finished
23:52The concrete and breeze-blocked floor can start going in
23:56Four blocks!
24:01What I like about this system is
24:03Once you've got everything set up
24:05It flies in, doesn't it?
24:06I mean, we're literally going
24:07We'll be walking across this and be finished in half an hour
24:15That'll go down
24:16Perfect
24:17You walk round that side
24:18Watch your fingers
24:19After a Herculean effort
24:21Hand crafting all the wooden frames for the interior walls
24:24Radha's team are nearly there
24:27How many have we done?
24:28This is number 17
24:30So we've got one last one to do
24:32And these guys are working like a machine
24:35Oh
24:37Letting me pencil
24:38No, letting me pencil
24:39No, letting me pencil
24:43It's amazing
24:44That we're already at this place
24:46It's pretty mad
24:47The timing is so, so, so tight
24:50So today we're up for it
24:54Keep bringing the beams
24:55Keep bringing the beams
24:56I've taken five minutes out from the build to go and have a chat with Chloe
25:03She went to the youth club as a child and now is a youth club worker
25:06So I'm not sure there's anyone better to tell us how important it is
25:13Hello you
25:14Hello
25:15Can I come and have a chat?
25:16Yeah
25:17Is that right?
25:18Yeah
25:19There we go
25:20So do you think if you actually had a building that you could make a big difference?
25:24I feel like it's really important to give them a safe space
25:28If they want to just be a child at the youth club they can do that
25:32I'm trying to get to a point where they can confide in you
25:35If they have no one else to confide in, who do they go to?
25:38So tell me about you when you came to the youth club
25:42I had quite a tough childhood
25:44It was always tiptoe around the house
25:46Don't speak
25:47Stay out the way
25:48It was sort of like a...
25:59Take your time, I'm sorry
26:02In stepping into the youth club world there was somebody who could look after me
26:08Is that the motivation you don't want anyone to feel like you did?
26:11Yeah
26:13Here you are, you've got a job, you're going to college, you're doing really well
26:18Will your 12, 13 year old self recognise you now?
26:21No
26:22I feel like I'm...
26:23Who I am now is the big sister I always wanted when I was little
26:27You should be very proud of that
26:28Yeah
26:29And what we're going to do is going to give you an environment in which you can carry on doing that amazing work and be big sister a lot of other people too
26:36Yeah, hopefully
26:38Now the floor's down and perfectly level
26:45Welcome to Cherry Tree Youth Club
26:49It looks amazing
26:51Gabby can outline her grand plans
26:54So we've got two openings over here
26:56So we've got an accessible loo and then we've got in there we've got a store
27:00We've got a beautiful open plan kitchen here and we've got a little breakout space
27:04Okay
27:05It's going to be great
27:06Let's have a look at the building here
27:07So we've got a new shaped kitchen, we've got a lovely ovens and stuff tucked away here
27:12Why don't you overfly the worktop so we can have like a tucking breakfast bar on
27:16I'm doing that already
27:17Oh yeah
27:20It's not my first rodeo, sweetheart
27:23So that still leaves us with a massive space out here
27:26This is where we've got the big glass, so it's a lovely view of the park
27:29I think of this room as like a Swiss Army knife design
27:32I want everything to do two things
27:34So they can play sports in here, they can do crafts
27:37This is going to be the hub of everything
27:39So they can have a party in here by clearing away all the tables and chairs
27:42We've got a disco board going up, we've got an amazing lighting system
27:45Oh, oh, and I forgot, we've got a cinema screen
27:47This is going to blow them away when it's done, isn't it?
27:49Yeah
27:50All we've got to do is get it done
27:54That's right
27:55With a prefab roof in place
27:57That's bang on my line
27:59Billionaire Sparkies can crack on with putting in 1,000 metres of cabling
28:04We've actually wired the two containers
28:06The containers are near enough done now, so we've just got this main area
28:09And then everything else is up in the ceiling
28:12There's a lot to do though, isn't there?
28:13There's a lot to do
28:15All our builds are hard
28:17But this is especially hard because it's brand new
28:20It's from the ground up
28:22This, for us, is a big challenge
28:26We're trying to connect the youth club toilets to the nearest main sewer
28:31Here we go, that's nice
28:32Dig a hole through there, lovely
28:33We've dug up a neighbour's garden
28:36Oh, that doesn't look good
28:37That doesn't look good
28:39Where we were expecting to find a sewer pipe
28:44That manhole's not where it should be
28:50It's not there
28:51Where's the pipe? Where's the sewer gone? Where's the sewer gone?
28:54That's what we're trying to find at the minute
28:55Where's all the sewage going from the house here?
28:59If it's, if there's not a pipe out the back?
29:01It's running right along the house
29:02And then into that sewer
29:04And dipping in next door
29:05Two houses are going into one
29:06So if we want to do this
29:08We dig a bit of gold in their garden
29:10So that we can change their drain
29:12So it all connects up
29:14Well that, I didn't see that coming
29:17That's made that a lot more interesting all of a sudden, hasn't it?
29:20We can't hand over a youth club with no working toilets
29:23On a scale of one to ten
29:25Of not good for the job
29:26That's about nine and a half
29:28So we're now going to need a digger
29:29And about eight men on that
29:33It's a massive, massive issue
29:42Come on boy
29:45Pass me a spade
29:47Do something different
29:51All good?
29:53Slowly, the building is beginning to emerge
29:5918 timber wall frames built by Radha's team are being fitted
30:07Ready for Chris and his team to get plastering
30:10It's all going to be boarded and skimmed
30:12That's where my mind's going now
30:13Yeah, so we've got quite a challenge in that
30:15It's like every time you get over one challenge in this
30:17You think, great, we're like
30:19And then here comes the next challenge
30:20Like, riding up to slap you in the face like a wet fish
30:23Keep going, keep going
30:25Keep going, push, push
30:27It's like wrestling a snake
30:29It's the moment of truth for our youth club toilets
30:32We found the main sewer by digging up another kind neighbour's garden
30:36But the club is 80 metres away
30:38Pull a bit more through
30:41And then pull it back up
30:43If we can't lay in this huge stretch of pipe to connect them up
30:46It's back to the drawing board
30:49All hands on deck?
30:51Yeah
30:53Thankfully, Jamie, aka Giant from the Gladiators
30:56Has also come to help
30:58Push it, keep pushing
31:04Good
31:05All right, further back on the pull back
31:08Three, two, one, back
31:10One big push
31:12All at the same time, two
31:14Three, three
31:16That's right, that's fine, that's fine
31:18Yay!
31:19We're done
31:20All right, well done everyone
31:22Very good, very good, very good
31:24Well done
31:25Thanks for putting the sewage connection
31:28Has been probably the most troublesome thing on the whole build
31:30So actually to have it connected up now
31:32It's a bit of a godsend really
31:34You can do all the engineering you like
31:35In the end it comes down to brute force sometimes
31:37Yeah, well I'm just glad I could put the muscles to use
31:40Yeah
31:42I'm gonna come over this mountain of rubble
31:44We've mapped out this flower border
31:46Now we need to see where the kitchen is
31:47I know this seems absolutely mad
31:48But I just need to be able to see this
31:51Because at the moment it's just looking like an absolute building site
31:54With the sewage setbacks calling in so many resources
31:58Ash hasn't been able to start planting or setting up the outdoor kitchen and edible garden
32:03We are way behind already
32:05On a normal domestic build
32:07I would have a footprint of a garden already there
32:09It looks like a war zone at the moment
32:11If you've got plastered we need to ask you to leave
32:13We've got to start plastering in the next 10 minutes
32:15We're almost halfway through the schedule and the scale of the job is still overwhelming
32:17The trouble is if you look at any one area in this build it will worry you
32:33Are there enough plasterers to do the plastering so that the kitchen can go in?
32:35Will the kitchen go in fast enough that the second fix can go in?
32:41Will the sewerage work? Will the electric work?
32:44If you think about it all, it will just drive you back
32:45Will the sewerage work? Will the electric work?
32:47Will the sewerage work? Will the electric work?
32:48If you think about it all, it will just drive you back
32:50Will the sewerage work? Will the electric work?
32:51If you think about it all, it will just drive you back
33:08After pulling a late one, the first stage of the electrics and plastering has been completed
33:13Woohoo! Kitchen day
33:17Gabby can finally set about working on the inside of the club
33:21Oh, now we can get cracking
33:23Right, the kitchen's at this end
33:25Ah, so excited
33:26Thank you
33:30Okay, so enormous oven
33:32Lovely sink there
33:34And an absolutely huge, humongous fridge
33:37This space is almost the most important space in this building
33:41Because what we want is no kid to leave here hungry
33:53We've got the gym kit! Come on!
33:56The gladiators' call out for our garden activity area has come up trumps
34:00So we've got a variety of stuff
34:02We've got pedal bars
34:03On bicycle
34:04I mean, that's fabulous, isn't it?
34:05Yep, absolutely
34:06Anything that gets the kids moving and
34:08And it's like a way for them to decompress
34:10Distract themselves from things that might be going in their lives
34:12Okay, we're not going to be putting them in for a while
34:14But in the meantime
34:15Yes!
34:16Well done!
34:17Well done!
34:26To make sure the centre is the best it can be for the community
34:29Gabby wants to learn more about the local kids
34:33So how many of your mates would you be bringing with you to Cherry Tree?
34:37She's gone to meet 14-year-old Billy, who lives on a nearby estate
34:42So what's it like living around here?
34:44It's a very little town
34:45And everyone kind of knows everything
34:47Everyone knows everyone
34:48And how's it been for you guys?
34:49Because I know your age group
34:51Been through some really tough times recently, haven't you?
34:54Yeah, like
34:55It's been
34:56I think in the past five years
34:57We've lost three
34:58Three of our friends
34:59And when you get them phone calls
35:01Finding out that people you know
35:03Have died like so quickly
35:05It's awful
35:07Then the Cherry Tree Community Centre have really
35:10You know, helped us with that
35:11They got
35:12They organised councils and things like that
35:14Just so we could speak to people because
35:17I'm so sorry
35:18That's massive to cope with that
35:21And do you feel
35:22So when all this was going on
35:24You guys had lost your youth centre
35:26You know, there's nowhere for your age group
35:28To actually be together, is there?
35:30No, there's not anywhere now
35:32And tell me about
35:33What a safe space would feel like for you
35:35And your friends
35:36You know, just some way you can go
35:37Where you know you're not going to get
35:38Be getting into trouble
35:39And some way you can go
35:40You know, when you need something
35:41And there's people there you can speak to
35:43Because you know, it'd get us off the street
35:44Things like that
35:45It's just trying to keep everyone out of trouble
35:47As much as you can
35:49Speaking to Billy really brought it home to me
35:51This centre's got to provide a safe space for people who don't feel they have one
35:56But I also want them to just feel full of fun, adventure
36:01You know, new dreams, new horizons
36:03I want it to be really special for them
36:05Fitting everything the kids need into this space needs careful thinking
36:13Rada, my love
36:14And another mission for our wood wizard
36:17Can I just hit you with my list of things?
36:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, just like back to back it for me
36:22Right, so I want a backdrop to the stage
36:24I want an arch
36:25But I want kind of a couple of layers
36:27So I've just done a sketch here
36:28We've also got storage for loads of kind of beauty makeup
36:32Well, okay, so like a vanity unit kind of style
36:35And also in the two loos
36:38I'd love you to make some shelving for the walls
36:41That we're going to fill with all the toiletries they might need
36:44That's the principle of nobody needs to be embarrassed by asking for stuff
36:47You just go in there and there's everything you need
36:49It's making me feel a bit sick to even actually verbalise this list
36:53It's definitely a little scary, but the joinery team is fantastic
37:03So we've marked out the corner of the gym area
37:06We've got the pizza oven to go here
37:08Ash still has to wait before he can landscape and plant
37:11But he can make a start on the outdoor kitchen
37:14We can get this done
37:16This is going to add so much benefit to the local community
37:19The kids are going to love this area
37:37We're two-thirds of the way through our build schedule
37:40Right, my loves, let's get this sorted
37:44And Gabby has to press on with painting
37:47Whoa!
37:48Whoa!
37:49Are you sure about this one, Gabby?
37:50It is quite leery in a good way
37:53So this is our main colour
37:55So the whole feel will be really like pops of interest
37:58I want them to come in here and think
38:00You know, there's that and there's this
38:02But it's not
38:03Not in your face
38:04Thanks, John
38:05The next couple of days, we'll see if we've got it right with the paint
38:10But it's always nerve-wracking
38:15Mind your back, Saucy
38:16Oh, sorry, darling
38:17Sorry
38:18Whoop, whoop, whoop
38:19So we've managed to find a beautiful, collapsible stage
38:24Which way did it collapse?
38:25Down
38:26So in and out
38:28This is going to be the real focus of this whole room
38:32Where they can expand their horizons a bit
38:34And when they walk in, I want to just be like
38:36Ka-pa!
38:37We've got karaoke here
38:38What's your go-to karaoke, Bill?
38:40I'll call it the Gat song
38:41I feel it in my fingers
38:44I feel it in my toes
38:47Cause love is all around us
38:50And the feeling for all
38:53CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
38:55CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
39:05Yes, that's what I'd see
39:07Let's go
39:08Right, gang, we're going to load up these turfs here
39:10And get them down
39:13We've got a lot to get in
39:17A huge amount of turf
39:19Yes
39:20950 square metres of turf
39:21It's...
39:22It's going to be...
39:23It's going to be tight
39:24I mean, this is...
39:25This turf's going to take a few hours
39:26Definitely
39:27To get that down
39:30Right
39:31First piece of turf
39:32Going down
39:34With an area almost the size of five tennis schools to cover
39:38Ash calls in the cavalry
39:40Hello
39:41Hello
39:42Have you laid turf before?
39:43That's it, huh?
39:44Is it something you've done?
39:45I'm so glad you're here
39:46This is good
39:47This is good
39:48This is what we need
39:49All hands on deck
39:50Because I'm actually pretty nervous
39:51That we're not going to finish this in time
39:53The toughest thing for Ash
39:54It hasn't been able to get at
39:55What for any other landscaper
39:57Would be three months of work
39:59And we get in two days
40:00I'm not altogether sure that that's possible
40:02What?
40:03On the face!
40:04I can't see where I'm going
40:11Looks good, doesn't it?
40:12I like it there
40:13I like it there
40:14C-T-Y-H
40:15Cherry Tree Youth Hub
40:19What?
40:20Well, I'm just a bit tense that this is on...
40:24On the back of the building, not the front
40:26But this is the side
40:28It's on the plans
40:29This is the side
40:30But...
40:31Give it a plans
40:32Don't get shouty
40:33It's just possible that I made a mistake
40:34We need it
40:35We need it where it's the entrance
40:36And this isn't the entrance
40:37This is the emergency exit
40:38Have you got enough letters to do it twice?
40:39Have we got enough letters to do it twice?
40:40Have we got enough letters to do it twice?
40:41Not here or made yet
40:42How long would it take to make them?
40:43What time can I start in the morning?
40:44Seven o'clock, okay?
40:45Seven o'clock's perfect
40:46If you can get four letters
40:47And we can put them on the front tomorrow morning
40:48We'll go for that
40:49Deal
40:50And we'll keep that
40:51Love it
40:52Okay
40:53All right, I'll best get on
40:54Thank you
40:55Lovely lettering, by the way
40:57Good
41:12A whole day later than planned
41:16Flooring is going down inside
41:18And is this totally bomb proof?
41:20Bulletproof
41:21Kid-proof
41:22But nothing else could be worked on until that's finished
41:26Right, come on then, let's get on, come on then.
41:28Putting huge pressure on the final day of the build.
41:32I might buy a lottery ticket
41:33because the chances of it happening are about the same.
41:36So, if my luck's in, my luck's in.
41:50So much fencing to do.
41:52We've got 70 meters of this to put in.
41:54With just 24 hours to hand over, we're still miles off.
42:00My mind is like absolutely fried right now.
42:04I mean, I'm feeling quite unhinged.
42:06A lot of stuff to do.
42:10We just seem to be going slow by our standards,
42:13going fast by any other build standards.
42:15I don't know how we're gonna do this, but we have to.
42:17At what point do you say, I'm sorry I failed,
42:19well, we just can't deliver what I said we could
42:21because it was just too much in the end.
42:24At least there's some good news.
42:28Letters for the front of the building have been delivered.
42:31It looks amazing. Thank you, darling.
42:35So these panes are pretty special, though, aren't they?
42:38They're very heavy.
42:39Yeah.
42:39Yeah, about 160k each, they are.
42:41Are they?
42:42Think this one's gonna fit?
42:43If they don't fit, it's quite nerve-racking.
42:45Shall we go for it?
42:47Yeah, go on, go on, lift it in, let's see.
42:51We don't have time to have another pane made.
42:53These are made to order, so if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit.
42:55We're good? Yeah.
42:56Yeah.
42:57Yeah.
42:58That's it, we're in.
42:59Isn't that beautiful?
43:00Excellent.
43:01You can see why, when Gabby designed this, she wanted all the glass front on this side.
43:12They've got plants.
43:13Yay!
43:14So let's get these out.
43:15Ash's plants have arrived, but he and his local volunteers have just one day to create the entire garden.
43:30We'll work all the way up to here, all right? Sound good?
43:33I think it's the best way to do it, it's probably start at the back.
43:38Finally getting some plants in here.
43:40Finally getting some plants in, which is great.
43:43And these are all edible plants.
43:45We've got fruit trees, fruit bushes.
43:49Could even put it on there.
43:50I'd rather.
43:52I'm hoping for the rest of the community that they'll come and be able to enjoy this space.
43:55We love it, we know they'll love it.
43:57Yes, it's making me happy.
44:01Inside, some of the key elements are finally coming together.
44:04It's amazing, it's a beautiful kitchen.
44:06It looks nice, it looks soft.
44:07Breakout rooms looking very lovely in there.
44:09Yeah.
44:10We're doing really well over here, colour is so important.
44:13We've got giant highlighter pens around all the things of interest.
44:16This is fun, this is exciting.
44:18This is your sort of setting day.
44:21We should just be polishing things.
44:22What's stressing us out here is we shouldn't be doing this today.
44:26We've got so much to do, we've got to be finished tonight.
44:29At the moment I just feel like crying and shouting at the same time because I know it's like...
44:34Is there anything I can do or make happen that will help things happen?
44:37Yeah, stop interviewing us and let us get on.
44:40Unbelievable.
44:46You pick it up, I'll put it on McDonald's.
44:47Every part of the build needs one last big push.
44:51And we'll get one right in the end there.
45:00Ryder and his team are about to find out if the bespoke cabinets they've built for Gabby are the right fit.
45:06It's intimidating, I'm not going to lie.
45:09This is crucial for this space.
45:17It's always the finer details that really pull the build together.
45:21So this is hair and beauty mode.
45:23Yeah, in there, yeah.
45:25Ta-da!
45:26So it'll light up and we've got a great mirror here.
45:29And then all our beauty products and skincare products here.
45:33They're going to love it.
45:34Kids should love it, yeah.
45:36The entire gym still needs to be set up and tested.
45:42Thinking spacing-wise, the bar's in that corner, would you say?
45:45Do you want to go here? Yeah.
45:46Yeah.
45:47We've got to get it done.
45:48It's just going to be a tight squeeze.
45:51It's a fun way to exercise and with your mates outside and anyone can use it.
45:55Maybe the arm and leg's in this corner because it's a smaller one.
46:00Love that.
46:01Yeah.
46:02And then last one.
46:03Last one?
46:04Yeah.
46:05Last piece.
46:07I'm thinking everyone needs to get involved and have a sesh on this.
46:14You ready to test them out?
46:15Billy is.
46:16Billy's a fetus out of all of us.
46:18So, I'm guessing...
46:20Oh, no, I don't know.
46:22Like, one foot on here?
46:23Yeah.
46:24Oh, sorry.
46:26Oh, it keeps moving.
46:28Oh!
46:30Where am I going?
46:31Am I there yet?
46:32Children are going to love it, isn't they?
46:33Yeah, they are.
46:34All right.
46:35All right.
46:36Yeah.
46:37Let me up to the top.
46:38See how it's fitted.
46:39So proud of everyone.
46:40This building has got such a personality now.
46:54And I love that.
46:55Hello, lady.
46:56Hello.
46:57How you doing?
46:58A mixture of excitement.
46:59Nervous.
47:00What could you have done in a week?
47:01With no building.
47:02Right.
47:03You're going to see your new home.
47:04Ready?
47:05Okay.
47:06Let's go.
47:07Oh!
47:08When I first arrived in Beverley, there was nothing here.
47:12All the youth club had was a gazebo on a wind-swept field.
47:16The staff were doing all they could to provide support for keep the people involved in a community.
47:21When I first arrived in Beverley, there was nothing here.
47:26All the youth club had was a gazebo on a windswept field.
47:31The staff were doing all they could to provide support for kids in one of the poorest neighbourhoods
47:35in the country.
47:38But with no place to call home, they were on the verge of having to stop for good.
47:45But in just over a week, we've done the seemingly impossible and built a brand new youth centre
47:53from scratch.
47:54The main hub is a relaxing, warm and safe space and can be used for anything from arts and
48:00crafts to discos and parties.
48:03And a new state-of-the-art kitchen means the centre's no longer relying on takeaways.
48:09And healthy meals can be rustled up any time of day.
48:15The toilets are fully accessible and stocked with essentials.
48:20And there's a calming breakout room to help when children are at their lowest.
48:29Outside we've created a kitchen garden complete with pizza oven so the kids can grow and cook
48:35their own food and an outdoor gym to help them stay fit and well.
48:41Despite the countless challenges we've faced along the way, I hope we've created a space
48:45where local young people can flourish and Jo, Fiona and Chloe can continue doing their amazing
48:52work into the future.
48:54Oh my god.
48:57Oh my god.
48:58I cannot believe it.
48:59They're just so big.
49:03This is what I always wanted.
49:04Well we'd use one.
49:07I know the kids have it.
49:18What's that?
49:20It's an outdoor gym.
49:22My god.
49:24Fruit and veg garden.
49:27Really?
49:28Black currants on the right.
49:29There's rhubarb.
49:30There's gooseberries.
49:31They're making crumbles.
49:32Yeah.
49:33That's fantastic.
49:34Ready to see some more.
49:39In you go.
49:44Oh my god.
49:47I just, I can't believe it.
49:49Oh my god.
49:50You alright Fiona?
49:51The kid?
49:52Oh my god.
49:53He's just amazing.
49:56You can fold the stage away and you have just a big open space to be able to do dance
50:03classes, your yoga class.
50:04You don't have to have the stage out.
50:05And the colours are really calming.
50:09Can't breathe.
50:10Can't breathe.
50:11Can't breathe.
50:12Can't breathe.
50:13Can't believe it.
50:14I can't.
50:15Oh my gosh.
50:16That is beautiful.
50:17Commercial quality oven so that you can actually produce loads of food.
50:43Huge fridge.
50:44You could run a breakfast club here for the kids that aren't getting food
50:46before they go to school.
50:47Yeah, and it's school holidays, it's weekends, it's evenings.
50:51This is just going to be such a lifeline for them.
50:55How did this happen?
50:58Can I have a minute?
51:00Sweetheart, of course you can have a minute.
51:02Absolutely you can have a minute.
51:04It's amazing.
51:06I feel it's just beyond anything that we could have imagined.
51:10Whilst you've got an amazing area here to play in,
51:12I'm also aware about sometimes just being overwhelmed by everything
51:16and needing a space to go and be quiet or be separate.
51:19So we created this breakout room.
51:25It's gorgeous.
51:27I think sometimes, you know, if someone comes and they're not having a good time,
51:31it'll be a good place to sit and have the conversations.
51:35Yeah.
51:38Ready?
51:39Out of this way, please.
51:40The other big thing was the toilets.
51:45What?
51:47Wow.
51:49That is bloody beautiful, isn't it?
51:51The hygiene means such a lot.
51:54Some girls haven't been going to school.
51:56Because they can't afford...
51:57Yeah, the basics.
51:59Yeah.
52:00Yeah.
52:02So, did we miss anything?
52:05It's beyond, isn't it?
52:07Yeah.
52:08So much hope.
52:09It's unbelievable.
52:11You...
52:11listened.
52:13The first few years of my life were in an estate like this.
52:34Yeah.
52:36And the trouble is, it's represented so badly, whenever it's featured, about what's bad about
52:42places like this.
52:45But we've just spent a week working with people to show what's good about places like this.
52:49It's massive what you do, so we had to give you the tools to do it.
53:01And more than that, we had to give you something beautiful.
53:03Yeah.
53:04So that when people walk in here, they know that people do care.
53:06It's like such an important message.
53:08Yeah.
53:11Right.
53:11We need to let the kids see it.
53:15Look at those little smiling faces.
53:17Wait till they see what's in there.
53:19Are you ready for this?
53:22It's a push.
53:23Oh, no.
53:25Oh, my God.
53:27Oh, my God.
53:28This is my favourite area.
53:30Oh, my God.
53:31Look at this.
53:32Oh, my God.
53:34It's just amazing.
53:41We can do some make-up lessons.
53:42Oh, yeah, I'm going to put something right here.
53:47No.
53:48Stephen.
53:49I definitely should respect him.
53:51There's a full-on, like, bridge in them.
54:03What do you reckon?
54:04What do you think?
54:05I love it.
54:06Do you?
54:07Yeah.
54:07Marks out of ten?
54:09Two billion.
54:10Billion.
54:10Billion.
54:11Look, we like to go into the gym area.
54:13There's a gym?
54:14Oh, my God.
54:17I'm going straight to them.
54:22Using your muffles.
54:23I'm not.
54:24Never been able to make pizza before, and now we can.
54:35Of course, none of this could have been achieved without our amazing team of trade suppliers
54:43and volunteers and volunteers.
54:47And our gladiators.
54:50There we go.
55:12There we go.
55:12There they are.
55:19The people that actually took part in building this thing for you.
55:22You've built a future for us and a legacy.
55:26Yeah.
55:27You're going to change lives.
55:28This is unbelievable.
55:29Every child deserves a chance, and I can just see that you're all here to try and make that
55:33difference.
55:34Thank you so much.
55:35I just want to say thank you on behalf of all the young people.
55:43This was all I ever wanted when I was younger.
55:47And now that we've got it for all the young people that we work with, now we can help them.
55:54From having probably the crappest youth club set up, we, I think, have got the best in the country.
56:03Bloody hell, you have knocked it out of the park.
56:06That is insane.
56:09Thank you so much.
56:11It's beautiful.
56:13Absolutely stunning.
56:18Johnny, I'm just saying.
56:22It's like Spider Woman over here.
56:24So this is good for your arms.
56:26You can get really strong.
56:27We both went to youth clubby, so how much it's impacted us, thinking of how much it's
56:32going to impact other people, so their situation is just insane.
56:36And it's so amazing to be a part of that.
56:40I sat there that night watching the kids eating pizza and chips under a gazebo in the rain.
56:44I thought, this reminds me of where I grew up.
56:47Those places are often overlooked.
56:50People who live there think people don't care.
56:51So we had to build here.
56:54I couldn't walk away from it.
56:55It's too personal.
56:58There are kids here that could do amazing things if someone believes in them.
57:04So this lot came along and built a safe space.
57:06And that's the very least children should have, isn't it?
57:09Something to eat and a safe space to be.
