Dyche frustrated after Forest beaten 2-0 by Everton
Transcript
00:00I'm disappointed. Happened to us at Fulham, a pretty dominant performance statistically,
00:22differently there or away, but here, very dominant stats, but stats don't win games.
00:26I've said it for years. I remember the myth 10 years ago when people said you have to have the ball to win games.
00:31It's a myth. We all know that now. Everton didn't, but they defended very well.
00:35It's with two good goals from their point, a really poor goal from our point of view.
00:39Dominated the rest of the game with the ball, but it's not good enough dominating games.
00:42You have to find the edge to go and score goals.
00:45It's one of them challenging situations of finding that balance between mixing our play to be effective,
00:50but then also playing in a way that we think is suited to the players, and we're still working that out, I think.
00:56Yeah, lots of passes, lots of crosses, but I don't think they were in massive trouble.
01:03They had a couple of scrambles and a couple of moments, but if you win that 1-0, everyone says a totally dominant display,
01:09but because you don't win that 1-0, they say a really good away performance from Everton, and that's fair, by the way.
01:15I'm not knocking Everton Football Club at all, and I thought they defended resolutely, defended very well,
01:19and scored two good goals from their point of view, really poor from our point of view, defensively.
01:25We had plenty of the ball, we got into key areas, we created moments, but not really with that killer moment, I didn't think.
01:32That's really frustrating after being a dominant side, but goals win games, and we didn't find a goal.
01:37You've been very positive about the progress this team's been making, but is tonight a reminder that you also need to look over the shoulder?
01:45There's never been a, I don't need a reminder for that.
01:47You know, three games ago, they all say we're brilliant, so, you know, that's how the storyline changes,
01:51and we've got to change that the other way.
01:54That's the biggest challenge, I think, dealing with expectations as well, since I've been in the big games that have come around,
01:58we've sort of risen to them, and then the ones when the expectations change onto us, dealing with that, can we go again?
02:03I've felt it in the stadiums, like a big expectation, go on then, you know, go on then, you know,
02:08after the Man City performance, forgetting about referees and, you know, all that, can you step on again?
02:13And a couple of times since I've been here, we haven't done that, you know, after that game, we haven't gone and delivered again,
02:18so that's the next step.
02:19Can you find that consistency, we spoke about the other day, in everything you do?
02:23The challenge tonight was a different one, very dominant with the ball, lots of crosses, lots of moments,
02:28but don't find the killer edge, and therefore it becomes a bit of a damn script from our point of view.
02:32So, on the other hand, that's the madness of football, and the madness of what you guys do.
02:35If we win that 1-0, everyone says, oh, I'm totally dominated.
02:39That's the storyline, really.
02:41Do they underline the sort of players you've got missing, the ones you're coming back from injury,
02:46that you're in key areas?
02:48Yeah, I think, you know, we're still, there's some very good players that are missing, that's fair,
02:53but I think we've still got players here who can perform and can win games, we've shown that,
02:58so I'm not going to start making excuses, it's helpful if you've got everyone fit,
03:03at least we are getting bodies back fit, which will be helpful.
03:07But yeah, I mean, there are, you know, Woody's been a loss, we know that, that's quite obvious,
03:12but we've still got players who we believe can be effective here.
03:15You've got to ask more questions, it's very difficult to play 700 passes and break down a packed defence,
03:29it's a very difficult thing, so you've got to ask more questions, you've got to play long, short, long, short,
03:33you've got to ask more questions by breaking the back line, I don't think we did that often enough,
03:37and when we did, there wasn't that real cutting edge or that real killer moment, you know,
03:41and I think, same at Fulham, well, for an away side, slightly differently, but quite a dominant performance,
03:46but never really had that moments, which are the killer moments, to go and score a goal.
03:50And then if you're not going to do that, that's fine if you're going to keep the ball in play, I don't mind it,
03:54but you don't lose the game, you know, you've got to get something from the game,
03:56even if it's two points, we'd have probably took it, you know, with the Fulham game and that game.
04:01But you can't let in goals like that, they're really poor goals, that's my most frustrating thing.
04:05Yeah, it's months, not weeks, yeah.
04:15Well, I think we're always assessing, but like I said the other day, you know,
04:18it's not just the ownership here or back in the club, we know that,
04:23but you've still got to find the people and it's still got to be the right deal.
04:26So, yeah, we'll wait and see.
04:27Yeah, I think, why not? Because in the sense that expectation rise, I just spoke to the players about it,
04:37I said, you know, in a way it's not easy, of course, you play some big teams,
04:41we've had some big results against them, but it sort of dampens down that.
04:45But tonight I think there was an edge, there certainly was for me, but like,
04:48I came in tonight and I think, go on then, after the Man City performance,
04:51there was an edge with that, we were very unfortunate, I felt with decisions,
04:54I'm not going to keep going on about that, but there was a real edge to the performance.
04:58And I was expecting that. And it was just, like I say, you can talk about stats and all that,
05:02but there wasn't an edge to the performance tonight, it wasn't an edge where you go, go on then.
05:06You know, I didn't go over that and go, wow, we've absolutely battered them completely.
05:09We did with stats, but not actual killer moments.
05:13And the expectation should be here. I mean, we've done a lot of work from when we've got here,
05:17and I've said all along, when we beat Tottenham here and they were so brilliant,
05:19I said, no, no, hang on a minute, it's a good showing, but there's a lot to learn here.
05:23That's an experienced group in heaven. A lot of them players have experienced the Premier League a lot.
05:26A lot of ours are learning about the Premier League. And that's sometimes the difference.
05:30It's not just about stats, it's about that feel of the Premier League.
05:33And that's where we've got to learn expectation changes.
05:36And it should be at this football club, and it's our job to keep pushing expectation.
05:40And that's what we're looking to do. Our own expectations, sorry, not from the outside.
05:43Our own, as a group.
05:50I know, I taught them lads well, you know.
05:52I know, I know. They keep telling me why I didn't do that, but knowing things about the things we did do.
06:01No, like I said, there's no question of them.
06:04A good away performance for that reason.
06:05You know, staying resolute, despite all the, you know, really powerful stats, but never really looked in particular.
06:11Two centre-halves have thought were excellent.
06:13The back four, really, but staying in situ, not really being adventurous, but won the game.
06:18And I'm a great believer in winning this.
06:20You know, you know what I am, and it's not.
06:21Look, a lot of our players, like I said, it's the madness of football.
06:25If we were in that 1-0, everyone would have said, oh, it's totally dominant.
06:29Now, this many passes, this many crosses.
06:30But the definition of being a successful side is winning games.
06:34Now, how will they come about?
06:36And that's where we've got to rise to the expectation.
06:38A lot of people, you could sense in the stands, they're like, go on then, go and win the game.
06:41And we've got to rise to that, I think, as a collective.
06:45Thank you very much.
06:47Cheers, everyone.
06:48Happy New Year.
06:49Yeah, cheers.
