00:47as we were discussing right before we started rolling that you actually are my first film
00:50industry friend because i used to go with my father as you know to all those film parties i was all of
00:5516 17 and weighed about 150 kilos and the only person who was nice to me in those parties was
01:00you so thank you for being so nice to me 20 years ago well uh karan uh you know i had a great
01:07relationship with your dad yeah and uh i always wanted to do a film with him yeah but he did
01:12offer you one really obscure film you know he uh prakhaji had offered me that film but you know
01:17whenever he's a great guy and uh i have some great memories about him yeah and whenever i met him
01:24i know i'm getting very sentimental but you know and i see you when i meet you and whenever i met
01:29you because i remember your dad a lot and he's a great guy and and he loved me i think yeah he was
01:34very fond of you he was exceptionally fond of you and i so am i so but i that doesn't mean i'm going
01:39to be nice to you on the show and first let me just tell you it's in a fantastic innings you've been
01:43you've been working in the movies for i think how many years now uh 1978 79 so it's almost 30 years
01:5030 years and you've been through ups and downs and hits and flops and always maintained your
01:55stature always maintained your dignity and maintained your stardom it must have been a tough ride how does
02:00it feel today well i think uh karan honestly god has been very kind to me and the film industry has
02:09been wonderful all my directors have been wonderful all my co-stars have been wonderful i have some you
02:16know i have some great friends and uh my family has been wonderful and everyone everyone's been
02:22really wonderful and i'm seriously honestly i'm telling you i don't know what i would have done
02:25if i was not in this film industry honestly i've had a great time every moment i've spent over here
02:30has been wonderful so how old are you anil i'm 30 years old because i was born in 78 when i first
02:37okay uh face the camera so i'm 30 you're 30 fine okay all right okay and i'm the queen of english
02:43but we just have to move on and so we'll just stick to the fact that you're 30 absolutely and today how
02:49does it feel you know you've had this tremendous innings and you've done so much work you're still
02:52lead actor and your daughter's making her debut with uh sanjeeb and sali savaria that scare you at
02:57all the thought of it not at all because i have two more children yes so i am hoping to be a leading
03:02man till they also you know uh come into entertainment because both of them also have
03:06decided to come into entertainment i don't know what they want to do okay uh what line they're going
03:10to choose but they both also i have decided to be so you know i have to sonam yes sonam now is
03:16you know it's going to be everyone's responsibility she's taken care of yeah taken care of the focus is
03:23uh harsh and uh ria so yeah you know till they come and make a mark in this entertainment world i have
03:30to be a leading man because i still want to be are you at all sometimes in a very funny way an
03:35embarrassment to your children because sometimes when i mean that in the most positive way because
03:39sometimes when you see your dad up there you know dancing and i'm constantly embarrassment i'm
03:43constantly they're always embarrassed of you are they yeah absolutely yeah they're embarrassed about
03:46me they're embarrassed about my film they're embarrassed about everything what i do like when
03:50you wear leather pants and really like a snazzy red jacket and you spike your head they say dad what
03:54the hell are you doing because i was just thinking if i saw my father do something like this i would have
03:58probably collapsed so any for any child so it's is it sometimes really funny for them to watch you
04:03see i was just in the morning i was with my son and you see when uh my daughter started suffering
04:08so on and off i would bum one or two cigarettes i've never been a smoker but i would bum one or two
04:12cigarettes so i said i'll never ever you know i won't smoke till the film release so i haven't
04:17touched the cigarette oh for some quite some time that's quite sweet for my son he drinks a lot of
04:23soft drinks okay so now the bet is he said you can never get abs because he's got great abs my
04:29son's got great abs so i said okay fine so i'm working towards that so if i get abs he's going
04:33to stop aerated drinks all together okay so you're you're getting abs abs now abs now for my son oh
04:40fantastic so now everything revolves around around my family absolutely i do everything for my children i do
04:45it for so now i do it for housing all too good on you like a perfect family man i'm a good guy perfect
04:49husband perfect father and very very few stories really about your philandering actually none at all
04:55i've decided to be very honest on this show okay so i'm being very honest you're saying you've been
04:59completely faithful uh faithful i wouldn't say that meaning what do you mean you caught me here
05:06is this confession time yeah absolutely all right we're going to make many more confessions but we're
05:10going to call on somebody who's very dear to you and has been a friend of yours and i'm really
05:14excited to have him on my show so let's just go ahead and introduce him then all right
05:19he's one of the finest actors of his generation his real and restrained performances have made
05:23him not only an audience favorite but also a fraternity favorite he stands out in a crowd
05:28he stands out in an ensemble and he stands out because of his sheer talent please welcome none other

05:51lesser known fact both of you are really close friends which doesn't really happen to actors being
05:55close friends i mean that doesn't really really happen in this industry though people pretend
05:58but uh this is a genuine friendship i know so how did that happen how did this all start from my
06:02side it's out of respect really okay it's out of respect you're just making him older suddenly no
06:06i like that how to share respect for the man honestly okay all right uh i think friendship at any at
06:11any level uh i suppose has to start from a certain amount of respect yes of course and uh that i have
06:18tremendous amount of respect for him and uh i think this film has given us an opportunity to uh you know
06:26we've worked in such close proximity with each other and gandhi my father yeah gandhi my father
06:31that you know spend a lot of time with each other a lot of conversation a lot of you know getting to
06:35know people when you spend time so much time yeah then it gives you an opportunity to to strike a
06:40friendship to strike a connection you know at least for me it started from tal because right you did tal
06:46and then salami ishk also yeah so both but basically for me it started from tal and that's the time i you
06:53know i have first day of shooting and well i was just waiting on the sets and i was looking at the
06:58watch i said suvaiji you're your hero actually i don't have to say yeah he will come when he came
07:07i think he came at what 12 o'clock why i said i said then he came very casually he comes right over
07:12there on the set and says i said suvaiji sorry i just overslept
07:16well that's quite honest instead of saying that i was really sick last night and you know i was i
07:23was throwing up uh so i was completely i was taken aback and i was taken aback by his honesty yeah and uh
07:29his uh you know he was not you know trying to you know like um but he's one of the honest uh actors
07:37i've met honest human beings i've met that's what i liked about him that he's you know what he feels he
07:42says it yeah and nothing is no double-faced kind of personality absolutely whatever is there in his
07:48heart he's going to say it and sometimes and sometimes when he's scared what he's going to talk
07:54god is he scary so he's going to attack me if i ask him something yeah i'm getting worried now
08:01especially after one or two vodkas

08:32about his career graph and yours is of course has been through its own upswing and downswing it's been a
08:36journey for you as well you came in as one of the most hyped newcomers yeah and you saw some great
08:41times and you saw some bad times and then div chakai onwards there was this emergence of akshay khanna
08:47the actor so it's been how's it been i mean this entire journey with you i was listening to what anil
08:51was saying also of how uh literally empty you know uh one would feel as an actor without the film industry
09:00you know without this journey yeah and this continuance of the journey you know uh it's such a great place to
09:05be up and down you know whatever whatever stage you're at yeah it's just such a great place to be
09:11uh so much fun and we you know wouldn't uh do anything else you know you wouldn't want it any
09:17other way no and sometimes you're always considered i mean the critics love your audiences all over
09:21think you're a fantastic actor sometimes do you want that superstar status that you feel sometimes
09:25eludes you at uh at any given point of time though there is such tremendous regard for you always
09:30always yeah constantly you do you aspire to have that tag as well akshay yeah constantly you want
09:36it yeah absolutely but uh that only happens uh and i'm sure you'll uh you'll agree with me but that
09:43only happens with films yes you know with a big huge blockbuster yeah you see no one becomes a superstar
09:48yeah or a big star on their own yeah yeah they need that one or two films to put them there yeah which uh
09:56till now i has eluded me anil has been through of course his own i mean you've had the biggest hits
10:01you've had some setbacks uh it's been tough i'm sure you know on those fridays where things don't work
10:06out you know when you have never for you never felt it never felt it i'll press my live meter now how
10:11can you not feel it honestly you can ask all my friends you can ask my family never because i know
10:16something about anil that's one thing i've observed i've known him for years now he is so passionate of even
10:22some of the not so good films that he's done he's always had the best things to say but he loves
10:26every piece of work he's done and i feel that about you as well every time i've spoken to you about your
10:30work i know you've always loved whatever you're doing and i think that's so important it's very
10:34important you have to love what you're doing you know if things don't work out things work out you can't
10:38say sometimes before before movies released we give a lot of interviews so always talking you know
10:43passionately about it and then the film releases and people hate it and then they call you back and say
10:48what were you saying what were you saying what were you thinking you know but especially to watch
10:53those interviews after the film is bombed yeah you see you know okay you know when i was getting into
10:57the mood of the film and the character and the director and the script the script is fantastic
11:03fabulous i'm audience is going to love this film yeah and suddenly you know the box office collection
11:06it's been a disaster critics have banned the film yeah and suddenly you see your face on the television
11:11so that's you know and then you're busy and they keep repeating those shows where you've gone on and
11:15not talking about it they look like never-ending interviews at that time i really believed what
11:19i said but another thing we were discussing about you being a good boy anil uh is that we've never
11:23really heard i mean you've ever heard or you've just covered it all over you know better maybe has
11:28he been up to tricks no no no in fact that day we were just sitting at anil's office and just chatting
11:35and we were talking about various things and anil was saying actually you know for 30 years or 25
11:40whatever however long he's been an actor he says i have had no controversy you know nothing to keep
11:47me in the news you know make up break up or you had a fight with this one or you know slapped another
11:53hero pitched about somebody he said i've had nothing but he's also i've never read about him that i mean
11:59an affair a liaison kind of you know like you know anil acting kind of fresh with somebody else i've never
12:05really read or heard it's been quite amazing you either do a great cover-up job or then you're just basically
12:09great cover-up job great cover i i keep thinking that you know i never believe in the two good to
12:14be true types you know these very very happily married situations always gave me i always wonder
12:19what's happening behind the scenes well anil's been remarkably lucky with his uh with his marriage but
12:23he has a terrific wife i absolutely love her absolutely superb person so first first marriage was you
12:29know he got really lucky and now he's married to feroz where where he's got as lucky feroz for everyone
12:37concerned is the director of gandhi my father and is now always with anil so that's so he's cheating
12:42on sunita with feroz he got lucky again again lucky again so if you really have to happy marriage
12:47he's got so lucky with marriage that you know he every couple of months you
12:50do you take all his advice seriously no no i tell him i said you're so lucky with marriage i'm i might
13:02not i'm not ready for marriage yeah of course hold on yeah he thinks that that's the thing to do but
13:08there's been absolutely no link up with you akshay as well there's been a couple here and there well
13:12there's been tara i know we read about that and we know that happened but that's a genuine
13:16relationship but here you link options that happen sometimes keeps happening but rare few and far
13:21between and you know you work with some of the most beautiful women the most sexy women and there
13:25has still never been any story there have been but you're right few and far between yeah yeah okay good
13:30i'm glad to hear that at least that is some kind of a declaration at least but tell me is it sometimes
13:34tough when you work with with the most beautiful women and you interact with them romantically and all
13:39that does it sometimes get difficult to kind of avoid a scenario which might involve you as when
13:44you know they're dating somebody else and you there is a certain chemistry and does it uh does that happen
13:51especially with you i mean you're married so you have these women working with you and you're
13:55you're supposedly turned on and you are really turned on and you don't know what turned on i think
13:59that's you know that's i think not the right that's not a very nice way of putting it nice way of putting
14:04but definitely you're attracted attracted and which is a better you know you spend so much of time
14:10and sometimes you spend more time with your course rather than you spend with your family
14:15and you do get attached and but then you have to take a call you know you're making it sound so
14:20legal it's like it's like almost allowed like you should go ahead and do what you have to because
14:25it happens no but what about all this talk every time actually there's talk about you being
14:38temperamental i mean i keep reading that but i've never really faced that with you because we met
14:42socially and on various occasions is he temperamental really anil i'll ask you yes word keeps getting
14:48brought up he is he's he is uh sometimes unpredictable right yes absolutely but only a
14:55person who really knows him uh will uh understand because i understand him you know i know that he
15:01doesn't mean to be uh temperamental or you know sometimes uh just you know rude are you rude actually
15:11you know you should you know you should become more people's person you should open up that's
15:14what i always tell him meet more people interact be good through all the people i said have to be a
15:19people's person enjoy this whole process that's what i constantly tell him and i'm sure he is
15:24definitely i can see that he's opening up and he's meeting people and interacting and and it's been
15:31wonderful uh working with akshay and being friendly to him and it's and i can see a definite you feel
15:38you've changed with anil being a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of some kind of it yeah
15:42there has been so now you're not so temperamental and also chipping me away yeah how do you how
15:47would you describe yourself are you all these things that people say you i used to be you were
15:50not anymore no but a little bit less then we're less i used to be very temperamental yeah i know
15:56you've been very good to me as a child but i don't remember yes we we know we've grown up in the
16:01same neighborhood akshay and me we were neighbors yeah we were south bombay boys uh and i used to play
16:06badminton very badly of course and akshay was this great badminton player so he used to just come
16:10and say you you off the court and we just had to we were like little like little surviving badminton
16:15players and we just to walk outside so that he was like the star badminton player so we should be
16:19thrown off the court and then they're making this up no i swear i'm not am i i swear i remember i was
16:26scarred i'm telling you i was how can i make that up and the funniest meeting i've had with akshay was
16:32once when he thought i was anupam and kiran san sikandar uh he met me yeah i'm telling you you
16:37forgotten that also let me let me take this opportunity to apologize on both now all right
16:41okay no apology accepted and i'm going to take a break on that note all right okay the now not so

17:09all right so i had the privilege of seeing the film two days ago and i absolutely loved it in every
17:13which way i've told you both of you and i i was just swept by it's not only it's visuals it's content
17:19it's performances all of you i mean i think it's so proud that you know that i it makes me want to
17:24ask you that such a film when it comes your way and you don't have a place for yourself in it and
17:28yet you go ahead and produce it i think that's remarkable how did it all happen on you well you
17:35see i think uh gandhi my father this script when i heard for the first time feroz narrated to me
17:42i just you know i've been listening to scripts so many years in my career i've worked with so many
17:50directors but i was completely bold completely moved by its content by its story its dialogues and
18:02the way feroz was narrating it so as you know you get a certain kind of instinct so when i heard this
18:06thing and i said okay i might be wrong so i said let me ask sunita and sonam also to you know listen
18:12to the script you know and they had the same uh reaction and was actually your first choice for the
18:18film well uh well actually when i heard the script no he wasn't the uh first choice there were other
18:25actors who were considered but uh but for me you didn't know that but uh you know but i always wanted
18:33him for the film what is your reaction actually when you heard gandhi my father you know i'm we were
18:37at the airport together and you know anil full of life and energy and you know high on life and work
18:45you know so he comes actually got something
18:55he was so charged you know with the script and with what he had got and
18:58and i've got something and he when he gets very excited he likes to uh god he needs a doctor then
19:04so he abuses like he needs a doctor mc bc i've got something mc
19:10oh so i said what do you have yeah yeah i'm coming to you coming to you i'm still not ready
19:14i'm coming after three months after that after this burst after this burst three or four five months
19:20i think later he says he calls me he says i'm sending feroz to your house i met feroz and
19:27uh three four months i was convincing feroz for akshay so that's why it took so long but even
19:35feroz he said akshay is anil's contribution okay so four months later feroz comes to my house he
19:42gives me a script and he says you know this film about gave me a little brief he said we want you
19:47to play gandhi so i got a chatka i said anil kapoor who was so excited he thought he's offering me to
19:59play gandhi so i said okay feroz i'll read the script and all i went straight ran to my bathroom looked
20:05to the mirror look left look right what is anil's scene in me to which angle i look from which
20:11angle i look like gandhi so what happened is i got so scared because i thought if anil is doing
20:19something for the first time it must be something really good so i said i'm not going to read the
20:23script because even if i get slightly tempted i'm not going to do it because i'm not going to play
20:27gandhi so you must imagine that he'll play amatma gandhi and i'll play a son you thought that
20:32maybe i'll be young of a life but why wasn't feroz specific that it was harilal gandhi or not no no
20:39he was playing a joke on me oh yeah oh sorry i missed that completely i thought you misunderstood
20:46you know he calls calling me you know i'm not taking his calls you started avoiding anil yeah
20:51i was so petrified but were you insulted at all no no not insulted i was just shocked
20:55you saw anil's cheese has slipped off his crack yeah i thought he's now it's all over it's time
21:02so then he messaged me says we want you to play you know not gandhi but the sun so then i read the
21:07script and my reaction was i mean i'd never come across writing of this of this caliber at all before
21:13that no not of this of this level and anil always says he says you know i've been meeting so many i've
21:18worked with so many people yeah i've never met a director with this kind of depth yeah with this kind
21:25of intensity and all this kind of integrity with this kind of depth we'll just have to have a look and
21:29let the world decide for themselves so let's have a look gandhi my father
