01:38I mean, you've been a celebrated movie star, done some spectacular work, loved by millions of people across the country.

01:44Are you happy with where you are today?
01:46Yes, I'm happy with where I am today.
01:48But does that mean that I don't want to work some more?
01:50Yeah.

01:51I do want to keep working till I drop dead.
01:54Well, I'm sure you should.
01:55You're too good an actor for you not to work.
01:57And do you, when you look back at your career graph, everyone looks back at some point in time and says that this is what I did right, this is what I did wrong.
02:04Are there any kind of regrets when you look back?
02:08Yes, there were some silly decisions along the way.
02:11Yeah.
02:11I think my success had gone to my head.
02:14Really?
02:14Had it?
02:14And my head had floated away with my brains.
02:17And yeah, I did make some not so great decisions.
02:21And when I look back, I say I've made superstars of other little actresses.
02:27But you know that happens to a lot of leading movie stars.
02:31I mean, you know, you can never tell which is the right film to do.
02:34Sometimes, you know, you're dictated by the dictates of the market at that time.
02:38And that sometimes makes you make some errors in judgment.
02:41Yes, and yes, at times it was just the fact that I was already so busy that I thought, you know, the film world would stop if I didn't do a film.
02:54Yeah.
02:54But no, things move on and that suddenly becomes a window for somebody else to step in.
03:00And when the film that you didn't do turns out really nice, you're like, oh my goodness, what was I thinking?
03:08Why did you let it go?
03:10Yes, yes, yes, yes.
03:11So, there's basically a looking back of happiness and lots of regret.
03:15Not lots of regrets.
03:16But some.
03:16A few along the way.
03:17We all have them, yeah.
03:18But on the whole, it was a great ride.
03:21I worked with some lovely people.
03:23Had a lot of laughs.
03:24Had tried some as well.
03:27Yeah.
03:27Fought a lot also with my co-stars.
03:29Yes, I know.
03:30Some of your fights have been legendary.
03:32I mean, you fighting with Aamir Khan was like, made all kinds of headlines at some point of time.
03:37And there was like, you know, there was this big close friendship.
03:39And there was a genuine friendship because you kind of began your careers together.
03:43And suddenly some silly incident, which is what, I mean, you've described it as.
03:45When I'm saying fighting, it was not like serious fighting.
03:48It was like kids in school fighting.
03:51You fought with Aamir like you would at school.
03:53Yeah, because the kind of pranks he would play on you were of that level.
03:57Yeah.
03:58So, the boys were also at that level.
03:59No, but like, why would you not talk to somebody over a silly prank?
04:02Whose ego was bigger?
04:05Yours or his?
04:06I think just one day, it went a little too far.
04:11This happened on the sets of Ishq, right?
04:12Yes, on the sets of Ishq.
04:13And the pranks being played not just by Aamir.
04:17It was even Ajay.
04:18Ajay looks very straight and all that.
04:20With that straight face, he tries to pull pranks on anybody and everybody on the sets.
04:24And it was just this one time where they were both bullying me together.
04:30Right.
04:30And this was a song that we were doing.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Akhiyaan Tu, Filale, Raja.
04:36Yeah.
04:36And everybody's on the sets.
04:38And that day, I think I took it a little badly.
04:41And the next day, I said, I'm not going to go to work.
04:44And because the next day, I actually didn't go to work, the shooting was called off.
04:50Oh, yeah.
04:50And Aamir got really mad at that.
04:52The professional Aamir Khan exploded there.
04:55Yeah, the, yes, the, suddenly the serious side of Aamir turned up.
04:58Just for fun trivia, how many years did you not speak to each other?
05:01Yes, it was four, five years.
05:05Four, five years of complete silence.
05:08Yes, to the extent we were still shooting Ishq.
05:12Ishq had not wrapped up.
05:13It was still going on.
05:14And you all were behaving like sulking friends.
05:16And he wouldn't say anything to me.
05:18And I was too scared to go up to him suddenly.
05:21Yeah.
05:21And that, that miscommunication, that little gap just widened.
05:27And, you know, I didn't know how to approach him.
05:29And he didn't say anything to me.
05:32You know, how you can just go quiet.
05:33What is the moment when you all patched up?
05:35When did that happen?
05:37I went across to his home.
05:39Suddenly, on one fine day?
05:40Yeah, but it was something else.
05:42It was quite different from film talk or something.
05:45It was just something else that I wanted to convey.
05:48And I felt very strongly about it.
05:50So I picked up the phone and I said, Aamir, I want to meet you.
05:54Can I come across?
05:54And he was like, of course, come.
05:55And that day he tells me, why didn't you ever say anything all these years?
06:01Because he thought I was upset.
06:03And I'm thinking, Aamir is upset.
06:06And I got, you know, kind of scared that Aamir is upset.
06:09You know how serious he can be.
06:11So, a lot of time just went.
06:14For no reason.
06:15For no reason.
06:16Because none of us brought it up.
06:18How silly that is, actually.
06:19It's so redundant, suddenly.
06:22It seems so redundant.
06:23Because you were actually, you've always been a very affable and amiable movie star.
06:27You know, especially with your lead actor, somehow you've always managed a really good rapport.
06:31Go on, go on.

06:32You have been.
06:34With the leading ladies, I'm not saying.
06:35I'm saying with the leading actors.
06:37Whether it's Aamir or Shah Rukh, you've actually had a very, very, very strong connect with both.
06:41And that maintained.
06:42But Salman is the only movie star that you never worked with.
06:45Barring one shelf film movie.
06:46Just like Karan didn't call me on a show.

06:48Salman never worked with me in a movie.

07:21Yeah, there have been incidents where so I really didn't know what was going on in his mind.
07:26And you never bothered to clarify it?
07:28Just like you never called Aamir for five years?
07:31You clearly are non-confrontational, Jui.
07:33You don't get into that zone with anyone, do you?
07:36Salman, I guess I never worked with him that closely.
07:40So I couldn't pick up the phone and say, Salman, what's up with you?
07:43Why can't we work together?
07:44I didn't do that.

07:46And what about the leading ladies of your time at that time?
07:49Man has never heard of you being in any kind of a zone with any other leading actress.
07:53Like, it never really is possible.
07:54Are you also the belief that, you know, it's not easy really to kind of befriend a contemporary actress?
08:01I guess I'd just been polite to the other girls.
08:06And whenever we met, it was always cordial.
08:10Right.
08:10Well, we never ventured into friendships.
08:13And what was your vibe with Madhuri?
08:15There was so much said about this arch rivalry and the fact that you all don't acknowledge each other.
08:20And I heard that there was this cold war and this cold vibe.
08:23So I want to know how true that is.
08:24Of course, we're going to ask her when she comes on.
08:26But I thought I'd take your take before we call her on.

10:09So I was actually asking Juhi, Madhuri, before you came on, that I said, you know,
10:14when I was, of course, in the movies, in the earlier days,
10:17there was this perceived rivalry between the two of you.
10:20How there were journalists who said, oh, you know,
10:21I was in the elevator with both of them and they never even wished each other.
10:25Or we were at a studio and they looked through each other.
10:27There was this kind of dynamic that made the rounds, you know,
10:29whether it was the gossip magazine that spoke about it or generally the buzz.
10:33But it wasn't generally the buzz with all the heroines.
10:36Like they say the same thing on me and Sridevi.
10:38They say the same thing on me and her.
10:40So it was like generally very expected.
10:42But you all were really looking through each other?
10:44Was this just an unnecessary hype that surrounded it?
10:47I think it was completely unnecessary hype.
10:50I think whenever we met, we said hi and we were very courteous to each other.
10:53But we didn't know each other.
10:55See, everybody was busy doing their own things.
10:57And, you know, I was doing like two or three shifts.
11:00So it was very hard to like keep friends or, you know,
11:03go out of your way to meet someone.
11:06And we hardly ever met also.
11:08But did it ever have some adjuncture, you know,
11:10it was Madhuri was always considered the sexy one and you the sweet one.
11:14Were you ever aspiring to be sexy and you aspiring to be sweet?
11:18Did that happen?
11:19I'll go with that first.
11:20Yeah.
11:20Okay.
11:20Let me be honest.
11:22I was.
11:22You know, she'd do this number,
11:24some choli ke piche kya hai and something, you know,
11:26and a similar number would turn up for you.
11:29You know, in your film and you're like,
11:31oh my God, now I've got to really,
11:32and I used to really work hard at it.
11:34But it wasn't easy because it wouldn't come easy.
11:37Yeah.
11:38So, yeah, I tried.
11:39But Madhuri, it didn't happen to me.
11:41It was the way you did.
11:43And did you ever have to combat like, you know,
11:45because you had an overtly sensual vibe.
11:47But did you feel like, you know, like the sweet, homegrown roles,
11:51sometimes, you know, you had to kind of work towards achieving on celluloid
11:54or did those also in your head come easily to you?
11:56Because at heart, that's what you really are.
11:58Yeah, exactly.
11:59So, for me, it was not something I had to, like, really work at.
12:04Like, I did Hamapke Hinkon, which was, like, very sweet, very...
12:07Yeah, Rajshri, actually.

12:09So, it was, like, very sweet and very cute.
12:11And, you know, that whole relationship between Salman and her
12:13and very sweet kind of a role.
12:16But I think dancing is one of my strongest points.
12:19And the Sree Devi factor is kind of interesting
12:21because while you had a reverential vibe towards her,
12:24because, you know, you always went on record saying how you loved her,
12:27she was like a sword-danging over your head again.
12:29You know, so, you know, there was a difference kind of in how both of you approached Sree Devi, right?
12:35That's true.
12:35I was...
12:36I still am.
12:37I'm a fan.
12:37You're a fan club.
12:38Yeah.
12:38I see her today and I'm like, gosh, what amazing work.
12:41I've seen her films again and again.
12:43Chandni, Chalbaz, Lamhe.

12:46I thought she was fabulous in every frame.

12:50I can't get over that.

13:09And you worked a fair amount of work with Salman and Amir, actually.

13:12And both of you actually have Shah Rukh in common.

13:15And with Shah Rukh, I've done a lot of work.

13:22Have you all ever discussed your experience of what it was like working with Shah Rukh?

13:28We haven't discussed anything before this.
13:31We only really got to meet each other during Gulab Gang.
13:34Oh, yeah, of course.
13:35During Gulab Gang.

13:36The film that you were doing together.
13:37Yes, that's right.
13:38I don't think we've ever really...
13:39Sat and talked.
13:41And had any kind of conversation.
13:42No.
13:42And even on Gulab Gang, do you all talk at all to each other?
13:45Yes, of course.
13:46In fact, that I still remember.
13:47And I think it was a lovely thing they did.
13:49Was that before we started shooting,
13:52you know, the director arranged a meeting of, you know, just her and me.
13:58And he brought us to the office.
14:01And in a room, actually, in the meeting room,
14:03he just left us alone for the next...
14:05For the first 15-20 minutes.
14:07Yes.
14:09We survived that.
14:11You survived that whole experience.
14:13Yes.
14:13That's kind of cool.
14:14I think that's a good initiation process.
14:16Yeah, and, you know, we just got to talk and just basically, you know,
14:19get to know each other a little bit.
14:20Were you apprehensive, Juhi, taking the film up because of Madhuri?
14:23No, I was apprehensive of taking up a film earlier in my career when, you know,
14:29we were all just rising to be the top heroines.
14:33At that time, I didn't take on a film because she was in it.
14:38Why?
14:38Yes, Juhi's...
14:39Then you would have worked on it.
14:40Yes, Dil to Pargale.
14:41Yes.
14:42You were meant to do Dil to Pargale.
14:43It was called Ajanta at that time.
14:45Was it?
14:45Yes, it was called Ajanta.
14:46And he wanted the two lead actresses of the time to do the film.
14:50And I remember you didn't want to do it at that time.

15:34I couldn't think about it.
15:35See, at that time they should have put us together in a room.

15:37You would have ended up doing that film together.

15:41But nobody actually, I mean, everybody thinks differently at that point in time.
15:45So when Gulab Gag came to you this time,
15:47you were over that kind of way of thinking.
15:50Actually, I was shocked when they came to me with Gulab Gag.
15:53I got a call saying, it's a fantastic role.
15:57You have to listen to it.
15:58They came and they narrated it to me.
16:00The script was really edgy, crisp.
16:05Had some real dialogue baazi happening.
16:07And very, very interesting.
16:08But the role, it was totally negative.
16:11I'm like, what made you think that I'm going to do this?
16:15Get up, watch man, and go back and go back.
16:18That kind of reaction.
16:20And later on, when I got over that and I looked at it differently,
16:25I said, it would be most interesting to do this film.
16:28Yeah.
16:29Because the moment I can accept that Madhuri is playing the hero of the film,
16:34and I'm playing the villain,
16:36then we can make this crackle.
16:40And then I did it because she's there.
16:43Right.
16:43Well, that's great.
16:44Chalo, career we've spoken about.
16:46Both of you glamorous, beautiful, top movie stars.
16:49You all never married heroes.
16:50I really want to know why.
16:54You were looking at Madhuri.
16:55First Madhuri is going to answer that.

16:57Why did you marry a lead movie star?
16:59It's just that maybe I didn't like anyone enough to marry.

17:04My husband was my hero.

17:53So, we were talking about your husbands who were not actors.
17:56You married Jai Mehta.
17:57You married Ram Nene.
17:59And both of them from, you know, different fields.
18:01Doctor, industrialist.
18:02Totally out of the film zone.
18:04While you very happily went and had a reception in the movie industry and we attended it.
18:09We sneaked away and got married.
18:11That's right.
18:13And was it a little bit of a love story before that?
18:15Because you've never really gone on record to talk about how it all started.
18:19I've been like that always.
18:20I've not really been the one to talk a lot about personal matters.
18:26Yes, he did.
18:27I mean, for about a year and a half before we were married.
18:31Everywhere I turned, he sent me gifts, flowers, cards.
18:35He inundated me with things.
18:37He gave me his complete attention.
18:39So, by the end, I was like, okay.
18:41Shall I ask you?
18:43I might as well.
18:44So, you were wooed into marriage, basically.
18:47Yes, completely.
18:48What about the dynamic today in the movie industry?
18:51How do you both adjust to this new way of the movie industry functioning?
18:54You know, you have agents and publicists and, you know, designers and stylists.
18:58And this whole, this kind of like, you know, the isolation of the movie star.
19:03As opposed to like, you know, you all were saying.
19:04You discussed it actually, the idea.
19:06How everyone used to sit together and be more of a community.
19:08Now, it's also spread out and everyone's doing their own thing.
19:11You know, it's like really different.
19:13I think now it's just a bigger community.
19:14Yeah.
19:14You know.
19:15But it's also more like.
19:15And there's so many people you deal with.
19:17And first, there's to be just one designer.
19:21One, you know, secretary, they used to call them.
19:23And that's about it.
19:25I mean, that was your group and your makeup man and your headdresser.
19:27But today, it's a lot more.
19:29But, you know, the media.
19:31If you see this, you know, social network, this, that.
19:34Everything has increased.
19:36And your responsibilities are even more.
19:39And the more you take on, the more people you need to take care of it.
19:42So, that's how it just keeps growing.
19:44It's like a real industry now.
19:48You know, like a corporate business.
19:49Where everybody is, you know, given something to do.
19:52Yeah.
19:53To decentralize it.
19:54Does that take away, you think, Jui, from what it used to be like?
19:57It makes everything very efficient, I must say.
19:59It is efficient, but I think a little impersonal too.
20:02Yes.
20:03It's very professional now.
20:04But there used to be times when, you know, the producer had run out of money.
20:07He used to come and request, please, I cannot pay you.
20:09Can you just leave this fee and not charge me for this?
20:12Imagine that happening today.
20:13Yeah.
20:13And he said, oh, okay, it's all right.
20:15Yeah.
20:15Yeah, now you have 20-page contracts.
20:17I mean, that time you, it was just a verbal understanding that you will get so much and you will get so much money.
20:23So, how much money have both of you collectively let go of?
20:26From like crying and weeping producers.
20:28I should still go back to that old way and go and start trying to produce money for movie stars who I firmly believe don't deserve it.
20:35If some movie stars say, yeah, I'll go and cry.
20:40Very happy, I'll go on my bended knees and cry.
20:42It doesn't matter to me.
20:43But it doesn't happen because we have to read that contract, honor that, you know, that official agreement.
20:49Yeah.
20:49The contracts were, we used to start a movie without a contract sometimes.
20:53Many times.
20:54We started so many films without a story.
20:58Yeah.
20:59Exactly.
21:00Yeah.
21:00Imagine, I remember Hema Ji telling me, she says, I don't know what used to happen.
21:06I used to get up and go.
21:07One shooting, second shooting.
21:08I used to come and say, happy, sad or song.
21:10There were three in the day.
21:13So, she said, I got happy, happy, sad.
21:17She was sad.
21:17Song, she was dancing.
21:19Then she said, we didn't even know what we were doing.
21:21We all were still not that misinformed, I'm sure.
21:24But yet, there were times, I'm sure.
21:25Sometimes, you know, like the script writers on the set, he's still writing the, you know, the dialogues for the scene that we're about to do.
21:31Yeah.
21:31So, we're all waiting, dressed up, waiting for him to finish writing and everybody's staring at him.
21:35One minute, I'm just getting done, you know.
21:37You're sure you've been through that phase as well.
21:40I have been through many such phases with you.
21:42With me?
21:43Remember, Duplicate.
21:45Yeah, because Mahesh Bhatt was not on the sets of that film.
21:47We had to do that.
21:48I remember the funniest thing is that, you know, Farah Khan reached Switzerland to shoot a song.
21:53We were shooting the songs.
21:54And so, she came up to the assistant director.
21:57And she said, see how economically, how economically friendly I am.
22:01I didn't bring an assistant.
22:02And I'm too amazed.
22:03He's the assistant director said, see how good I am, ma'am.
22:06I didn't bring the director.
22:09You know, directors those days only came for scenes.
22:11Action somebody else was doing.
22:13Song somebody else was doing.
22:14It was that whole phase, you know, that I personally was a part of.
22:17So, I know.
22:18But do you all keep in touch with the tabloids today with so much happening?
22:21You know who's dating who, who's doing what?
22:24Do you care?
22:25I don't care.
22:26And I never used to care.
22:27So, what is your gossip radar like on a zero to ten?
22:30Are you all both on zero?
22:32I'm maybe on two, maybe.
22:34And you?
22:35I'm completely zero.
22:36So, if I had to ask you.
22:37I didn't know there was anybody else who could be less than me.
22:40Really?

22:42I mean, I don't know.
