00:00She's the daughter of a legendary writer, the sister of an accomplished actor-director.
00:11But today, she stands solid on her own creative turf.
00:15Her two released films have acquired a cult status,
00:18and she's described as an individualistic filmmaker of our times.
00:21Please welcome my childhood friend and someone who has a lot of movie mojo,
00:25none other than Zoe Akhtar.
00:30Thank you for coming.
00:41Welcome back to Coffee with Karan.
00:43Thank you for having me.
00:43I'm always happy to have you.
00:46So, Zoe Akhtar, welcome back to Coffee with Karan.
00:49Thank you for calling me back.
00:50I'm very happy to call you back.
00:52So, how does it feel to completely combat the perception of a filmmaker,
00:57to go into hair, makeup and show legs?
01:00But I do it quite often, actually.
01:05Slap on hair and makeup.
01:05Yeah, I mean, yeah.
01:06I don't do it.
01:07And show us a tad bit of your sex appeal.
01:11Yeah, yeah.
01:11So, it's good to kind of break that.
01:13I mean, I'm a girl, at the end of the day.
01:15I like dressing up once in a while.
01:17Yeah, which is a good thing.
01:18Yeah.
01:18So, you know, every time women filmmakers have spoken to you,
01:21there's always this used to be.
01:22I mean, that's very retro to think like that now.
01:24This angst about, like, being a female filmmaker in a man's world.
01:28But have you ever actually thought of the opposite of that?
01:31Have you ever used your, like, sexuality to your benefit in the business?
01:36Not really.
01:37I've really, not really, honestly.
01:39I mean, I've kind of lucked out because I was from this industry.
01:42Yeah.
01:42So, I've never ever had to deal with any kind of discrimination
01:47or any kind of unwanted attention.
01:50Right.
01:50You know, I mean, because uncle, I mean, they know my dad and mom.
01:53So, dirty uncle is hardly going to hit on me.
01:56But there are a lot of dirty uncles out there, I'm sure.
01:58I know there are because I hear about it from my other friends
02:01that have come into the industry.
02:03Right.
02:03So, I was saved on that front.
02:05Because you are Javed Akhtar's daughter.
02:07I think so.
02:08So, I've just totally bypassed that whole side of the industry.
02:14But having said that, I, you know, there's, it's a man's world in any field.
02:19Right.
02:20You know, so, I mean, I keep getting asked,
02:22what is it like to be a female filmmaker?
02:24And I'm like, what do I have to compare it with?
02:26Yeah.
02:27Like, I have, believe it or not, been born a woman.
02:30This has always been the gender.
02:33Yeah.
02:33You know, and so, I don't, there's nothing to compare it with.
02:36I decided I want to make movies, I'm making movies.
02:38Right.
02:38You know, so, I don't know.
02:40I, I've had struggles, but they were not because I was a girl.
02:43Your struggles are legendary, Zoya.
02:45Yeah.
02:45You've been, like, possibly, you are one of the most talented filmmakers.
02:49Your two films are amazing.
02:51Both of you, Lakhbha Chant, Zindagi.
02:53You know how I felt about both the films.
02:55And yet, you've had such a tough time casting these movies.
02:57Yeah.
02:58Why does no one do your movies?
02:59I don't know what is wrong with people.
03:02Yeah.
03:03I don't know.
03:03I think because I don't write one boy, one girl films.
03:06You don't?
03:07You write ensemble films?
03:07I write ensemble.
03:08I mean, at least what I've written till now has been ensemble.
03:13Yeah.
03:13And ensemble.
03:14So, I think that's what it is.
03:16You know, I think it's not that typical.
03:18I think if I did a love story and it was a one boy, one girl.
03:21Easy to cast.
03:22Something like that with, you know, this banner and this bit, all that.
03:25I think I would cast it quite easily.
03:27Yeah.
03:27But, I mean, it just doesn't come to me.
03:29So, I have to write what comes to me and then, you know.
03:31Why do love stories not come to you?
03:33No, I just, I don't know.
03:35I don't know.
03:36I mean, everyone's doing them and they do it really well.
03:38Yeah.
03:39The people that are doing it.
03:40It hasn't happened yet.
03:41And when it does, I will make one.
03:43I have no problems with love stories as such.
03:45Though, I have to say, it's not my favorite genre.
03:47Don't lie.
03:48You don't like love stories.
03:49No, I like love stories.
03:50You don't like watching them really.
03:51No, I do.
03:52I like some.
03:53Like, I mean, Casablanca is like my own time.
03:54Or you say eternal sunshine of a spotless mind.
03:56It's a genius love story.
03:57Yeah.
03:58It's a genius love story.
03:59So, Dilwale Dulhanya Le Jaenge is not your favorite love story in the world.
04:03It's not my favorite love story.
04:04No.
04:05It's a great love story.
04:06But, it's not my favorite love story in the world.
04:08Yeah.
04:08So, you think differently.
04:10And therefore, your casting has always been an issue.
04:12Like, the big talking point recently was how you couldn't manage to get Ranbir and Kareena to do the film.
04:17Yeah.
04:17And both of them had apparently outstanding parts in the film.
04:21Did that break your heart a little bit?
04:22You know, I'm so thick-skinned.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Because of what that it takes me about like half an hour max to bounce.
04:29Oh, really?
04:30Yeah, yeah.
04:30Bounce back.
04:30I have a very thick skin when it comes to things like this.
04:33So, what do you think of?
04:35Like, is there a loss and move on?
04:36I don't think it's a loss.
04:37I'm like, what next?
04:39Okay.
04:39It's always like, I mean, because you can't, you can't, you're going to make a movie.
04:44Yeah.
04:44And frankly, once you make a film, the only people that remember, they were approached, are the people that didn't do the film.
04:50Right.
04:51No one else remembers and no one else cares.
04:52So, you're happy with the cast you have.
04:54I am super excited with the cast I have.
04:56Yeah.
04:57So, well, that's fantastic.
04:58And the dynamics of the movie industry are always, always in, well, what do I say, interesting to talk about.
05:04And I think we have a fellow filmmaker, a contemporary filmmaker who's possibly the biggest commercial filmmaker who's our next guest tonight.
05:11And I thought it would be really fantastic to hear two diverse perspectives with two filmmakers who I love and adore their work, of course, with their different energies altogether.
05:19Now, my next guest tonight is somebody who's unassumingly, unapologetically, and unabashedly mainstream in his ethos.
05:26Possibly considered to be the most commercially viable filmmaker of our times and most popular in that respect, none other than brand Rohit Shetty.
05:43Welcome to Coffee with Karan.
05:47All right.
05:49Hello.
05:50How are you?
05:51Very well.
05:52So, welcome to Coffee with Karan Rohit.
05:58This is your first time on the show.
05:59Yeah, I'm afraid.
06:00You're afraid?
06:01It's a place you get into trouble.
06:03You're invited to get into trouble, I think.
06:04What nonsense.
06:05Rohit has been on the show.
06:06Have you got into trouble?
06:07Not really.
06:08Yeah.
06:09No.
06:09All right.
06:10So, the whole, like, you know, you made this mega blockbuster last year.
06:15You know, it's crossed 200 crores.
06:17And every film of yours, how many of them have been that have crossed the 100 crore mark?
06:20It's ridiculous the kind of number of it.
06:23All of them have, no?
06:24Yeah, all of them.
06:24All of them.
06:25Four of them.
06:25Four of them.
06:26Yeah.
06:26One back to back.
06:26Before that, we didn't have this 100 crore thing going on.
06:29God, Zoya, don't you want that?
06:31Don't you want to make these multi-budget, big money spinners?
06:35She's making big budget spinners.
06:36Budget I get.
06:37I just want them to make that kind of money.
06:41Yeah, of course.
06:42Now, you told me, what is interesting, you told me that, you know, this brand of cinema
06:46is something that you have never, when I say brand of cinema, there is a kind of a mainstream
06:50that Rohit believes in, that we've grown up watching, that you, when you see, and you
06:54actually can't bear most of them.
06:57But I remember you had some really fun things to say about Chennai Express.
07:00And that was actually a great chat that we had, where I realized that actually she kind
07:04of saw through the genre and appreciated Rohit's endeavor to put out something that he believed
07:09in so unabashedly.
07:10Because he just, I mean, it's, you have to, you have to be completely into a particular
07:18world to make it that way.
07:21You have to, you have to buy it.
07:22You have to, you have to believe that pitch.
07:24You have to be, like, I would never be able to do it.
07:27Right.
07:27You know, and like, I can't do it.
07:28I can watch it and I can appreciate it, but it doesn't come organically to me, you know?
07:33And I don't think he's putting it on.
07:34Right.
07:35I think he's just taking this film and doing it.
07:37And Chennai Express had some, I didn't expect to enjoy it, honestly.
07:42Yeah.
07:43As much as I did.
07:44Right.
07:44And there were things about it that reminded me of commercial films that I, when I was
07:48growing up.
07:49Like the Manmohan Desai.
07:50Like the Manmohan Desai, where they start singing, you know, where they want to convey
07:53things to each other and they're singing.
07:55Yeah.
07:55That kind of stuff, like, I love.
07:56Yeah.
07:57Yeah.
07:57I love it.
07:57And Rohit, I mean, of course, we've known your films and seen them and appreciated the extent
08:03of the love that they've had.
08:04My films, it's like an alien has arrived on your set.
08:07What do you mean your films, your genre?
08:10No, no, it is.
08:12No.
08:12When I mean brand, because I'm not talking as a filmmaker myself.
08:16Okay.
08:16I'm talking as like a host of a show.
08:18When we talk about your cinema, what kind of, do you watch like everything that is made
08:22out of it?
08:23You watch everything.
08:24So what have you thought?
08:25Indian, Tamil, Peru, everything.
08:25What did you think of Zoya as well?
08:26What have you thought of Zoya as well?
08:27I loved Zindagi Milekina Duba.
08:28And Lakpa Transport, you fell off to sleep.
08:30I thought it was okay.
08:31Okay, all right.
08:32But Zindagi was, I think it's one of my best films I've seen.
08:36Like, it's my favorite.
08:37Oh, really?
08:38I told her what thank you was saying.
08:40I have to say thank you.
08:41On the show, we have to be like.
08:43Yeah, I can't be like, of course.
08:45He's saying, what thank you I told you.
08:46But I still have to say thank you.
08:48She's being polite.
08:49Okay, okay.
08:50Zoya had made her first film and I remember going to her place after she released.
08:55You acted in that film.
08:56Lakpa Shantz, yeah.
08:57Everyone's acting in that film.
08:58Everyone's acting.
08:58I did one little cameo and she was in depression because the film had not done well.
09:03So she was like, no, everyone's given me these four and five star reviews.
09:06But why has no one gone to see it?
09:09And, you know, it's just that kind of thing that does happen at times to certain films.
09:12You know, they get that cult love.
09:13Like, Rohit is somebody who's gone on record and said that he has absolutely no interest in what the critics have to say.
09:18I remember watching an interview of yours with Rajiv Masand where you said that, you know, you give my star one and a half star but you're still calling me on your show.
09:25Yeah.
09:25And you're somebody who still will seek that kind of critical acceptance, right?
09:30You know, seek it means it's nice to hear good things about your film.
09:35You put something out there.
09:36It's, I mean, everybody reads it.
09:38It's out in every paper.
09:39At least the industry reads all the reviews.
09:41So it's nice if you're reviewed well.
09:42Yeah.
09:42You know, but I mean, for Zindagi, there were a couple of people that really gave me bad reviews.
09:47Right.
09:48I mean, but I just...
09:49You took it in your stride.
09:51You take it in your stride.
09:51What is your take on that?
09:53Do you even care?
09:53Do you read the reviews?
09:54I used to.
09:55I used to get angry.
09:56I used to get depressed earlier.
09:58In the beginning?
09:59Yeah.
09:59But now I enjoy it when they give one star to Chinna Express or to Singham.
10:04Or now when I'm making Singham 2, I know it'll be one and a half star film.
10:08Again, same old trashy masala.
10:09All that.
10:11Yeah.
10:11And then it'll be a super hit film.
10:13And then it won't matter.
10:14No, it won't.
10:15It won't at all.
10:16Because half of them, they don't know themselves.
10:18They are in a awe of Hollywood cinema.
10:20Yeah.
10:20Now, critics are something out here.
10:21They're meant to be a certain kind of policing.
10:23They...
10:24I believe that we're all a bit messed up.
10:26At least I am.
10:26Sometimes I seek their acceptance.
10:28Sometimes I don't.
10:29No, but you know, the thing about them is that they don't...
10:34Most of them don't review the craft.
10:38They don't...
10:39They tell you the story.
10:40Yeah.
10:40And they tell you whether they like the story or what worked or what didn't work.
10:44I mean, that's not a film review.
10:45And they have different standards for different filmmakers.
10:48And I find that very unfair.
10:50Right.
10:50You know?
10:51There'll be one big commercial masala film.
10:53And they'll be like, oh, this film is great.
10:56And leave your brain at home.
10:57Who can leave their brain at home?
10:59I want to meet these people.
11:00Who can detach their brain and go to the cinema?
11:04You know?
11:04And then they'll...
11:05Have you heard that a lot, Roy?
11:07Every film of mine.
11:08But do you think it makes sense?
11:09No.
11:09We don't need them.
11:10Yeah.
11:11We don't need them.
11:12Leave your brain.
11:12These guys were not there.
11:15And various actors who I know for a fact.
11:17There are so many actors who time and again you tell them, try and rise above it.
11:21Don't worry about it.
11:22But they will pick up the phone and get called.
11:24They want to do the interview.
11:25It's a weekly process.
11:27No, but I mean, it would be interesting to get...
11:30If you can read something and be like, yeah, you're right.
11:33That's right.
11:34Right.
11:34You know, I actually didn't look at it that way.
11:37Right.
11:37Actually, that's a better perspective.
11:39Oh, I wasn't good enough here.
11:40But how often does that happen?
11:41I mean, we are a nation of critics.
11:43Yeah.
11:43You know, I mean, film is the only art form.
11:46It's the only art that people go in.
11:48I mean, you won't look at a painting and say the background should have been red.
11:51Yeah.
11:51Or you won't listen to, you know, a concerto and be like, there should have been trumpets.
11:55But everyone's a filmmaker.
11:57You know, it's the only...
11:58And also, everyone's become a box office analyst.
12:01That I find even more annoying than critiquing the film.
12:04Like, what do you mean?
12:04Because, see, we grew up and we loved the movies.
12:07Yeah.
12:07You know, I mean, when I saw Kagan Skaipur, my parents showed it to me.
12:10I had no idea if it was a hit or a flop.
12:12Yeah.
12:12I just fell in love with that movie, with Gurudak.
12:16Later on, I realized it didn't make any money.
12:18Yeah.
12:19You know what I'm saying?
12:20Yeah.
12:20It didn't matter to you.
12:21You loved the film.
12:22You responded to the film.
12:23Yeah.
12:23It made you feel something.
12:24You know?
12:25And the audience needs to...
12:26Like, jane bilo yaar.
12:27Or whatever.
12:28Yeah.
12:28The audience needs to respond to the work that's put out there.
12:31Not because this has made 200 crores and this has made 100 crores.
12:34I believe, like, what's happening now is very...
12:37Like, normal audiences now are asking, like, you know, 100 crores kia nahi.
12:41It's like, it's the new term for Silver Jubilee.
12:43Yeah.
12:44I would say.
12:44It's the 100 crores.
12:45Yeah.
12:46But now it's become...
12:47Either a Silver Jubilee or a 100 days, I don't know that.
12:50I still like Silver Jubilee.
12:51Yeah.
12:52It's like Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee days have gone.
12:54So, it's like...
12:55It's nicer.
12:55It had its own.
12:56And there was also 100 days.
12:58Yeah.
12:58There was 100 days.
12:59And, you know, it's like...
13:01We don't talk about it.
13:02You will never say, that my film will be 100 crores.
13:04Yeah.
13:05Or I won't say it.
13:05Or I won't say it.
13:06You are asked.
13:07Yeah.
13:07Yeah.
13:08The media will ask you.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Because they don't know what else to ask.
13:12See, the media...
13:13Like, the critics are another league.
13:14I mean...
13:15And there are many.
13:16The media is just...
13:17Like, on another...
13:18Please, can you tell Rohit what one media member asked you once at the press conference of Zindagi Na Milegi Dubara?
13:23She told me.
13:24Yeah.
13:24I've told you, no?
13:25Who is the three hot?
13:27Yeah.
13:28I have to three boys.
13:29And you're like...
13:30Whose body?
13:31Whose body do you like?
13:33And I'm like, you want me to objectify my caste?
13:36And Ritik is like, she's not understanding anything you're saying.
13:40Okay.
13:40And I'm like, I'm not going to answer this question.
13:42But one of them is also...
13:43And one is my brother.
13:44Like, how gross.
13:45Okay.
13:45She's like, who's hot?
13:46And I'm like, I'm not going to answer this question.
13:48This is ridiculous.
13:49You have three grown men.
13:50They're actors.
13:51You can't...
13:52Like, talk about them like, A, they're not in the room.
13:55Yeah.
13:55B, I'm working with them.
13:56It's just bizarre.
13:58And she's like, I'm so sorry.
13:59You're hurt.
14:00I said, I'm not hurt.
14:00I'm irritated.
14:01You've even missed the emotion.
14:04You're even wrong there.
14:06But they also asked you whether you had pillow fights with your brother.
14:08This is...
14:09We are at...
14:10You know, you've just finished your film.
14:14You know, promotion happens.
14:15You're so exhausted.
14:16You're sitting there.
14:17Me and my brother, we're doing an interview.
14:19So, do you have pillow fights?
14:21I was like, I've just made a major motion picture.
14:24Do you have anything to ask me about the film?
14:27No, but you all must be teasing each other.
14:29I was like, do you know our collective age?
14:31At which point, Farhan has kicked me under the table and said, when we were...
14:34And like, just handled it.
14:36Tried to balance it.
14:37All right.
14:37On that note, I'm going to take my first break.
14:40All right.
14:40In conversation with Rohit Shetty and Zoya Akhtar, things are really hotting up.
14:45Lots more to come up.
14:46We'll be back.
14:51All right.
14:51I'm back.
14:52In conversation with Rohit Shetty and Zoya Akhtar.
14:54So, we were talking about like the consistency of the media and how they constantly will badger
14:59on about the same thing.
15:00So, how much of the same thing do you keep getting?
15:02Like, no, now you're working with Shah Rukh.
15:04Did Ajay feel bad?
15:05And how...
15:05Is there any kind of tension on set?
15:07Is Ajay no longer with you?
15:09Have you split?
15:10So, how do you deal with that?
15:11What do you say?
15:11You have to live with it.
15:12I don't reply only.
15:13You don't reply.
15:14I don't get bothered by all those things.
15:15But do you think genuinely there are levels of insecurity with movie stars?
15:18If I had to be like gut level honest about it.
15:22I think we all have.
15:23Stars have more.
15:24I think so.
15:25Do you think they tend to get territorial?
15:27Yeah.
15:27About the filmmakers they work with?
15:30And not realizing that it works both ways?
15:32Like, what is your take on something like this?
15:34I think it has to be free flowing.
15:36I think we are all artists.
15:37I think it's about emotions.
15:39Yeah.
15:39It's not like if you're...
15:41If you're doing a film...
15:43Like, you are a maker.
15:44Yeah.
15:44You've done three, four films and then you work with an actor.
15:47And then after that, if you're doing another film with some other actor.
15:49Right.
15:51It's not like that.
15:51I think it's more about emotions.
15:53Right.
15:53Like, with me, if you ask me...
15:55My first break I got was because of Ajay.
15:58Right.
15:59That film didn't do well.
16:00But he stood by me.
16:01Correct.
16:02Then we did Golmal together.
16:03Right.
16:03And then whatever I am today is because of him.
16:06And I say the same thing about Shah Rukh.
16:07So, it matters in that way, you know.
16:09Yes.
16:09It's not like if I'm doing a film with Akshay.
16:12And after that, if I'm doing a film with Shah Rukh.
16:14Right.
16:15Akshay will get emotionally hurt.
16:18But in this case, it's different.
16:20Right.
16:20It's been 20 years that I'm with him.
16:22And again, by the grace of God, I'm balancing it.
16:24Right.
16:24I'm doing Singham.
16:25Right.
16:26So, nobody spoke about it.
16:27They started off...
16:28Which is what I always say that I'm...
16:33One of the big reasons why I'm in the movie industry is because of Shah Rukh.
16:36And that emotion for him and his family can never be diluted.
16:40And sometimes I feel when I read the papers, it annoys me that, you know, sometimes they don't realize that they've written an article and moved on.
16:48But they could have caused a scar.
16:50They could have caused a dent.
16:51You know, tomorrow, say, your brother is an actor and he's working with you.
16:57Tomorrow, you may choose not to.
16:59Kind of like the lead role in your next film is not with your brother.
17:01He's part of an ensemble now, right now.
17:03But that doesn't mean...
17:05I mean, I don't know what your dynamic is.
17:06You felt a level of insecurity from that happening?
17:09No, I don't feel that way because I honestly...
17:11Maybe because I've never felt that I got a break because of a big star.
17:16That never happened.
17:17I mean, if I owe any allegiance, it's to XR Entertainment and Ritesh and Farhan as producers, not as anything else.
17:24You know, my allegiance lies to the work I'm going to do.
17:28Right.
17:28You know, and not to anyone, frankly.
17:31So if I tomorrow want to make a film and if I think that Mr. Shah Rukh Khan is the best actor for this part,
17:40then he's going to be my first choice.
17:41Whether I've worked with another actor over 10 films.
17:44Or whether the other actor is your brother or not.
17:46Yeah, and Farhan is not going to say yes to everything I offer him.
17:49And I may not offer him everything.
17:51What about movie stars and their minds?
17:53I mean, we've had so many conversations.
17:54Actually, Zoya and I have spoken about like the levels of megalomania and mania in general.
18:00I mean, I hate to generalize.
18:02You know, there are some cool people out there.
18:03But there's mostly like we were talking right before you came about how tough it's to cast an ensemble film.
18:08How actors only want to be like heroes, like we were discussing even before the show started.
18:13They just want to be heroes.
18:14They never want to be part of an ensemble film.
18:16It's because, you know, it's not that today it's happening like that.
18:20It's been since years.
18:22No.
18:22I'm telling you.
18:23There were more films where Mr. Bachchan would work with Mr. Shashi Kapoor and Mr. Shatir Varsina.
18:28They were all in one movie.
18:30No, but at that time, one actor was doing 10 films.
18:33Mr. Bachchan must be doing 10 films.
18:34Shashi ji must be doing 10 films at a time.
18:36And they were more emotionally connected.
18:39Today, it's more practical.
18:39Yeah, it was smaller.
18:40That's what it is.
18:41It's more practical today.
18:42They want to do one film.
18:44They are not that emotionally connected whether I worked with this guy earlier or not or whether he's not doing good.
18:49So, that's what you're saying.
18:50There's a death of emotion, basically.
18:52Is that why ensemble casting is difficult?
18:53When we were young, I would…
18:55No, I don't think emotion has anything to do with…
18:57No, earlier it was like because they want to be together in a film.
19:00Like, Amir Ji, Dharam Ji, they want to do…
19:02Yeah, let's have a party.
19:02Yeah.
19:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:03I know what you're saying.
19:04It's not like that.
19:04Yeah, it's not like that.
19:05They don't want to do that.
19:06No, everybody is just waiting that his film will fall.
19:09It's like that now.
19:09Yeah, yeah.
19:10It's bad now.
19:11That's true.
19:11It's very bad now.
19:12That is upsetting to know that looking at somebody else's failure becomes like such a big priority on your list.
19:16Every Friday, I've seen so…
19:18I think 80% of them do this.
19:20They'll call up the trade analyst by evening.
19:23If the film is good, they'll keep quiet.
19:24If the film is bad, they'll do 100 calls.
19:27Yeah.
19:28I've known that this film flopped.
19:29I've known that this film is not going to happen.
19:31For somebody else's film.
19:32Yeah.
19:32With all my film, it happens.
19:34And I come to know who all are the people who are calling.
19:36Zoya's looking like, oh God.
19:39No, no, I've never called her.
19:40I don't know a trade analyst.
19:42I've never called anyone to ask him as an else's movie.
19:45That's a no-
19:45Well, you know Taran, Adarshan.
19:47I know Taran.
19:48But I know people that said Zindagi won't do a day.
19:52Yeah.
19:52I know that.
19:53When Zindagi released a few of…
19:54They said it won't do a day.
19:55I know that.
19:56I don't call trade analysts, they told me it's a film on tourism.
19:59Spain tourism.
20:01All that they told me.
20:02We did hear about the Spain tourism.
20:05It was a film…
20:05And people are like, why are you shooting so much in the car?
20:09Yeah.
20:09I'm like, it's a road movie.
20:09Someone told her to…
20:10That's what I've said.
20:12Someone told her to cut out the journey shots.
20:16She said it's a road film.
20:17But why are we seeing…
20:19Why are you showing the country?
20:20I'm like, because when you drive across the country, you see the country.
20:26It's very funny.
20:27Very logical.
20:27That's why I always keep myself away from all these people.
20:30But you have to not…
20:32And of course, when we talk about actors, it's always hysterical.
20:37Like you, of course, we have Kareena in common.
20:39How Kareena told her, like, I want to do a film just me.
20:42But she said, but this is a family film.
20:43You can't be a family.
20:46You can't be the whole family.
20:47You told her that, didn't you?
20:48Yeah, of course.
20:50She wanted to just do a film with just…
20:52Zoya, she loves Zoya.
20:53So, she said that…
20:54And they have this Zoya and Kareena have the most outstanding dynamic in a room.
20:58Like she has…
21:00Please tell her the first time you had this argument with her.
21:03Because Rohit is working with her at Shah Rukh's house.
21:06It was hysterical.
21:07She's very funny.
21:08She was like, we were talking about movies and all.
21:10And she was like, do you like Dilwale?
21:12I said, yeah.
21:13No, but did you see Dilwale and want to run behind a train?
21:16So, I said, no.
21:17So, she's like, but didn't you want to just run behind a train and get on it?
21:20I was like, not really.
21:22So, she's like, but isn't it your favorite love story in the world?
21:25I said, no.
21:26I like it a lot.
21:27I really like the movie and all that.
21:29But it's not my favorite.
21:30Like, Casablanca is my favorite love story ever.
21:33And she was like, you'll never make a movie.
21:35And I was like, really?
21:37And she's like, yeah.
21:37If you don't think Dilwale is the best movie ever made, you won't be a filmmaker.
21:40I said, you're wrong again.
21:41Was this before we met or after Dilwale?
21:43It was way before.
21:45Otherwise, you would have gone away by saying, actually…
21:47So, then we started arguing.
21:48And it was really funny because Shah Rukh was in the middle saying,
21:51calm down, calm down.
21:52It's okay.
21:53She loves Dilwale.
21:55You like Dilwale.
21:56It was like, calm down, calm down.
21:58But it was very fun.
21:59But I get on with her.
22:00But that's Kareena Kapoor for all of us.
22:02She's fun though.
22:03She's a lot of fun.
22:04She's completely mad.
22:06And she's crazy.
22:06And I was just telling Rohit before we started,
22:08I said, you're really lucky for her.
22:10You've always, always given her these big hits.
22:12And I hope that continues.
22:14Yeah, we did two films and both worked.
22:17And now she's in Singham too.
22:18Yes.
22:19She's now in Singham too, but she's not in your movie, Zoya.
22:22So?
22:26Alright.
22:26On that note, I'm going to take a break.
22:29In conversation with Zoya Akhtar and Rohit Shetty,
22:34we'll be right back for the rapid fire round.
22:36Oh, God.
22:37Hi, in conversation with Rohit Shetty and Zoya Akhtar.
22:46And it's time for the rapid fire round.
22:48Now, you do know the deal.
22:51Rohit, you, of course.
22:52I'm taking the bus.
22:53You're taking it.
22:53Okay, but should I start with you or Zoya ladies first?
22:55What do you mean he's taking it?
22:57What does that mean?
22:58He means that he's quite confident he's going to win the rapid fire round.
23:02Dude.
23:04Yeah.
23:04It's not done?
23:05That kind of overconfidence?
23:06He obviously doesn't know me very well.
23:08Okay.
23:09Alright, so are you ready then for us to all know you very well?
23:12Let's go.
23:12Okay.
23:13Be sensitive to the whole industry.
23:18I'm always sensitive.
23:19Alright.
23:20Very quickly then, Zoya, this is your rapid fire round.
23:22Here goes.
23:23If you were a private investigator,
23:25who's the one person from the film industry you'd like to tell?
23:28Bhushan Kumar.
23:29Why?
23:29Why?
23:30Now, that is another question.
23:31I want to tell Bhushan Kumar.
23:33Why Bhushan Kumar?
23:33Because I want to tell him.
23:35I'll tell you later.
23:36Bhushan Kumar.
23:37Okay.
23:38An overrated film in the last two years?
23:40Okay.
23:40I don't mean to be mean,
23:41but I thought Vicky Donor was a bit overrated.
23:44Like I heard so much about it and then I was a bit disappointed.
23:47Okay.
23:48And an actor you think is underrated?
23:50Saif Ali Khan.
23:51Okay.
23:51What's the most irritating song you've ever heard?
23:53You know,
23:54Bhattavini's Dil is really getting on my nerves.
23:56I'm sorry,
23:58but it's just playing everywhere.
23:59I've just come back from Delhi for my wedding
24:01and I'm just done with it.
24:02Why are you watching this episode?
24:04And that,
24:04Mane Na,
24:05Mane Na,
24:05I'm just like,
24:06I don't want to hear it again.
24:07So,
24:07sorry Ayaan,
24:08I love you,
24:08but this song is getting on my nerves right now.
24:10Okay.
24:11And the most ridiculous lyrics?
24:13This two.
24:14That's also mine.
24:16Song.
24:17Yeah.
24:18Everybody does it and you can do it too.
24:20Too means the posterior.
24:22I know.
24:23I think it's ridiculous.
24:24Okay.
24:25Yeah.
24:26The worst remake ripoff?
24:28Either.
24:29There's so many,
24:30but like,
24:31people should leave Romeo and Juliet alone now.
24:35We're done with Romeo and Juliet.
24:37Okay.
24:38Too many have been,
24:38but like,
24:39I've,
24:40there are too many
24:40bad remakes.
24:42Alright.
24:43Kill,
24:43marry,
24:43hook up.
24:44One with each.
24:45One with each one.
24:46You have to kill one,
24:46marry one,
24:47hook up with one.
24:48Ranveer,
24:48Ranveer,
24:49Shahid Kapoor.
24:51I'm not going to go to jail to kill,
24:52for any of these three.
24:54I'm definitely not going to marry any of these three.
24:57So,
24:57I think I'll hook up with all three.
24:58Alright.
24:59A person from the film industry you'd like to go on a romantic date with?
25:03You.
25:04What rubbish?
25:04Shut up.
25:05I've been booing you for years.
25:06You dumped me for Ekta Kapoor.
25:08Then.
25:11Okay.
25:12Alright.
25:13One thing men should know about women,
25:15but don't.
25:16Well,
25:16in this country,
25:17they should know no means no.
25:21Yeah.
25:21If you were to experiment,
25:24which is an actress you'd like to have a thing with?
25:27Kangana Ranaut.
25:28Kangana?
25:29Yeah.
25:29She's quite a hottie.
25:30Okay.
25:30Yeah.
25:31An idea that changed your life?
25:33An idea that changed my life that I could make movies.
25:35The sexiest actor in Bollywood today?
25:37I like Seth.
25:38Your favorite director of the current lot?
25:43Anand Gandhi maybe.
25:44Okay.
25:45Deepika, Katrina, Kareena, the most stunning actress.
25:48Deepika.
25:49Ranked in order of acting talent.
25:51Anushka, Priyanka, Deepika, Katrina, Kareena.
25:55One to five.
25:56Acting.
25:57Like versatility.
25:58Oh, versatility.
25:59Versatility.
26:00Yeah.
26:00Yeah.
26:00Triyanka, Kareena, Anushka, Deepika, Katrina.
26:07And the men.
26:09Ranbir, Hrithik, Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir.
26:11See, they're all talented, so I'll say versatile.
26:14Okay.
26:15Ranbir, Hrithik, Aamir, Shahrukh, Salman.
26:21All right.
26:22That was your rapid fire round.
26:26Okay.
26:26How do you think you did, Zoya?
26:28I don't know.
26:29I'll find out tomorrow.
26:30People stop talking to me.
26:31Nobody will talk to me.
26:33All right.
26:33I'll figure it out.
26:34Here goes.
26:35Your debut performance for the rapid fire round.
26:37Okay.
26:38All right.
26:39An actress you think is sexy, who's hot?
26:42Deepika Padukor.
26:43If not in the film industry, what should the following people do?
26:46Shahrukh Khan.
26:47Sportsman.
26:48Deepika Padukor.
26:48National level Batman player.
26:52Kareena Kapoor.
26:53She would be writing gossip columns.
26:56She would be a journalist.
26:57And with a fake name like Chikni Chambeli or something.
27:02Neeta's Natter.
27:03That cat and all.
27:07That cat.
27:08Okay.
27:08A movie that you think did not deserve a sequel?
27:11Satya.
27:12A person in the film industry who needs to work out?
27:16Abhishek Bachchan.
27:17Chill out.
27:18Karan Johar.
27:19Get out.
27:21Many of them.
27:24Get out.
27:25Okay.
27:26What would you do if you were stuck on an island with the following people?
27:29Shahrukh and Salman.
27:30Shahrukh and Salman.
27:31I'll start making bad boys with them.
27:33The most promising director in your opinion is?
27:36Ayaan Mukherjee.
27:37An idea that changed your life?
27:39Making Golmal.
27:40Very quickly.
27:40Choice is that.
27:41Pariniti or Alia?
27:42Brighter future?
27:43Pariniti.
27:44All right.
27:45Sushant, Siddharth, Aditya, Varun, Arjun, Ayushman, the brighter future?
27:49Arjun and Varun.
27:50Your favorite director of the current lot?
27:52Raju Irani.
27:53All right.
27:54Deepika Katrina Kareena, the most stunning actress?
27:57Deepika Patakam.
27:58Okay.
27:59Rank in order of acting talent?
28:01Anushka Priyanka, Deepika Katrina Kareena.
28:04Kareena, Deepika, Priyanka and then Anushka Katrina.
28:08Okay.
28:09And the men?
28:10Ranbir, Hrithik, Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir.
28:13Shahrukh, Ranbir, Aamir, Hrithik, Salman.
28:18All right then.
28:20That was your rapid fire.
28:21Very well done.
28:22Both have performed exceedingly well.
28:25The winner will be announced.
28:26I did the rapid fire.
28:28It was like this.
28:29You were thinking.
28:30What nonsense?
28:31As if you all were discussing some script.
28:33No.
28:34Some lunchbox type of film.
28:35But I was not edgy.
28:36My answers were edgy.
28:38Lunchbox type of film.
28:39You took so much time.
28:42No.
28:43It was not rapid fire.
28:45I think I'm not yet announcing the winner because I'm going to wait till my next and final segment to do that.
28:51You want us to dance like how award shows are.
28:53Somebody, we need to perform to get this.
28:56That's the only thing.
28:57Either we dance or do something.
28:58Knock yourself out.
29:00We have to do something to receive.
29:02Otherwise, I am the winner.
29:03You say we have to dance.
29:05Otherwise, he's a bully.
29:05That's the way it happens when award functions.
29:07He's a bully.
29:07You dance, you get an award, you're out.
29:09Then the other person will come, sit, announce award, gets out.
29:13But that's true, yeah.
29:14Yeah.
29:15In half an hour, we'll finish actually.
29:16On television, which are the audience thing there.
29:18It's a four-hour show where everybody's sitting like a family.
29:21Yeah.
29:22In half an hour, it's disrespectful.
29:24For sure.
29:24But is that what happened?
29:25Yeah.
29:27Oh, God.
29:27I'm not announcing, but I want to lighten your spirits and show you both something.
29:32Have a look.
29:32Of course.
29:33Okay.
29:35Zoya Akhtar with Karan on the coffee space.
29:39Oh, my God.
29:40You've really like arrived, no?
29:41Now, like you're too cool for school.
29:43You're not going to hang out with us a lot.
29:44I know that you've become a very successful director.
29:47You're very busy attending shows like Coffee with Karan.
29:50But it would be nice if you return my call so I don't have to get in touch with you like this.
29:54There's something very important I need to discuss with you regarding your next film.
29:58So, whenever you have a chance, it's about casting.
30:00It's about me being in it.
30:01So, I believe you're sitting with Rohit, Shetty.
30:04You should hide your face in shame.
30:05He's made 200 crores and you've only made 100.
30:08Do you know who has made you reach there?
30:11Who all?
30:12It's people like me.
30:13We have rehearsed.
30:14We have become silent.
30:15We have become mute.
30:16We have gone through all those days of hard work in the sun.
30:19And we have helped you become a 200 crore director.
30:21So, now you think you're sitting on the couch and you can forget all about us?
30:24That's not going to happen.
30:25She's annoyingly correct.
30:28If I may say so.
30:29So, it becomes really hard to argue with her and I'm somebody who argues a lot.
30:34We do like 20 takes, okay, till you get your perfect take.
30:38And then you're like, that was amazing.
30:40One more for love.
30:42One more for safety.
30:43That's another one you keep saying.
30:44What are you doing?
30:45Like a condom ad?
30:46One more for safety.
30:47Come on, yeah, just chill.
30:48Well, Rohit, if you want to have me in your next film, then it has to be a non-Golmal movie.
30:54Because I've never worked with you outside the Golmal series.
30:56So, we have to do something where I'm talking.
30:58Okay, all this wonderful acting aside, Zoya, I love you so much.
31:03You are amazing, not just because you spoil us in, you know, the material sense and, you know, give us everything that we need, but also because you really care for your actors.
31:13And I just want you to know that I do think that you are a very fine director, way finer director than I could ever be.
31:21You're a great writer and I'm very, very proud of you with everything that you've achieved.
31:25I'm sorry that I'm saying it on Coffee with Karan, but Rohit, you are the best, you are the biggest director India has seen.
31:33He is the superstar.
31:35As far as I know, all the girls on the set rule over him more than the hero.
31:39Everyone has a crush on Rohit because he's hot, he's tall, he has a great body.
31:45I think we always talk about the 100 crores and the 200 crores, the kind of films that Rohit makes, but I think what we conveniently don't speak about is really the person that he is.
31:56It's his simplicity, extremely hardworking and a team player.
32:03I think if there's anything that I've learnt from that movie, it's being a team player.
32:09So, thank you Rohit.
32:10I've known him since 20 years, 22 years and he's always been there and we've always been together.
32:18So, he's not a friend, he's family.
32:21He's a very hardworking director and he's got what he deserves.
32:25And I'm most happy that people who did not believe in his kind of cinema and abused his kind of cinema are going and signing it.
32:35So, that's great.
32:36Is he talking about you?
32:37I don't know.
32:37You signed me.
32:38Yeah.
32:39I don't know.
32:40Did you abuse me earlier?
32:43Did you ever hear me abuse you?
32:45You said you hear everything that is ever said about me.
32:47That's courtesy of Kareena Kapoor.
32:51I'm a producer, San Rohit.
32:53I've never abused anybody whose films have made money.
32:56I understand what it takes to reach the mark that you have.
33:00Nobody better than me understands the power of economics.
33:04I want to tell you.
33:05So, anyway, these were people you worked with.
33:07How does it feel to hear people you worked with talk about you?
33:09It's sweet.
33:10It was so sporting of all of them to take the time and do this.
33:12Yeah.
33:13It was fun.
33:14It's always nice.
33:14Who's winning the hamper?
33:15I just want to know that.
33:16In my next and final segment, that was Rohit Shetty and Roy Akhtar.
33:20He can't get hits and hampers.
33:22He can't.
33:23You have to choose.
33:24Hit hamper.
33:25I've come here all dressed up.
33:27Have you seen me like this ever?
33:28Have you seen me like this ever?
33:30You all have come dressed up for this hamper?
33:32Why do you think we came here?
33:35We've come with a hamper.
33:36Are you taking panga with the whole industry?
33:38Yeah.
33:39For this hamper?
33:41I didn't realize my little red basket had the power that could want two illustrious filmmakers
33:47to leave their busy lives and come and fight for this.
33:52It looks like a baby inside this.
33:53It looks like a baby.
33:54Well, this is the closest I'll get to a baby in a pot.
33:56I think will be this hamper.
33:57All right.
33:58As you can see, the ambition level and the competitive spirit is quite high.
34:02So, there's another segment to fight for, which is my last and final segment, where I will
34:07also announce the winner of the Rapid Fire round.
34:09And you guys will win something else if you win the quiz, but lots more of that in the
34:13next segment.
34:14Be right back.
34:19After the riveting round of Rapid Fire, I'm here to announce the winner.
34:24Such a stoic expression.
34:28Why?
34:29Because he's a bully.
34:31Are you?
34:31No.
34:32And so, he's coming only like I'm winning and I'm like, it's really cocky.
34:35Just for that, he should lose points.
34:36You think you deserve it?
34:38Obviously.
34:38Ask anyone.
34:39Ask anyone means?
34:41What about you?
34:41I'm the only other person.
34:42Yeah.
34:43And I say no.
34:44I would like to say, the winner of the Rapid Fire round between Zoe Akhtar and Rohit Shetty,
34:54the hamper goes to, by a close margin, Rohit Shetty.
35:02Yes, I knew it.
35:04I did think it was a tad more clear.
35:07Like, a spark.
35:08And I'm not going to share this with you.
35:09Yes.
35:10So, you think this is not a correct judgment?
35:13I was told when I went out.
35:15Krittis are going to take me seriously now.
35:17You know that?
35:17You have signed a film with him.
35:19This is why you're giving him the hamper.
35:21Can I go home now?
35:22No.
35:22You have to now win one more round.
35:25I can't keep losing on this show.
35:26I'm going to kill someone.
35:29I don't mind losing that.
35:30I hate losing.
35:31I can't lose on this show.
35:32Can you leave that now?
35:33It's yours, Rohit.
35:33No.
35:33I came for this all the way.
35:36He's really wanting this hamper.
35:38So, I'm very, I'm most touched through it that you want this hamper.
35:40You know how many people are going to take me seriously after this?
35:43Yeah, because you want this hamper.
35:45Yeah, right?
35:46Okay.
35:46This is what happens.
35:48This is the sound that this buzzer emanates.
35:51You point and you buzz and you answer the quiz.
35:56So, here you go.
35:56You point and you talk.
35:58Yeah.
35:58No, but what are you asking?
35:59It's Bollywood trivia.
36:01It's a quiz.
36:01It's called a coffee quiz.
36:03And when you win, you win these little presents.
36:07Great.
36:08It's a film reel that is now dead.
36:10Now we're digital.
36:12How sad, man.
36:13Yeah.
36:14Now, you have to be a little more huddled for this.
36:17Okay.
36:18Complete the, without singing the songs.
36:21Without singing them.
36:22Complete the lyric.
36:23Yeh mera dil, piyar ka diwana.
36:27Diwana, diwana, piyar ka parwana.
36:29Correct.

36:31Piyaar kia to darna kia jab piyar kia to darna kia.
36:35Piyaar kia koi chori nahi ki.
36:36Piyaar kia.
36:37She said it first.
36:38So, yeah.
36:39Two zero.
36:40All right.
36:41Mera naam chin chin chu, chin chin chu, baba chin chin chu.
36:44Raat chandi mein or tu.
36:45I'm bad with songs, yeah.
36:47This is not bollywood trivia.
36:48This is songs ka trivia.
36:49This is...
36:49Three zero.
36:51All right.
36:52Guess the Hindi films based on the English translation of the title.
36:59Just let it go, friends.

37:02I buzzed first.
37:03No, he said it first.
37:04One four.
37:05No.

37:07Me a player, you an illiterate.
37:10I'm a player.
37:11Two four.
37:11Oh, God.
37:12Two four.
37:14Twelve hands and a pair of eyes.
37:16Two more eyes.
37:17Come on, man.
37:18It's still going on.
37:19Nobody out there.
37:20I buzzed first.
37:21No, no, no.
37:22Excuse me.
37:23It's still going on because you're like really putting force.
37:25She did say it first.
37:26Two five.
37:28I said it first.
37:29No, no, no.
37:29I'm buzzing first also.
37:32I won't start your film for a year.

37:35It is two five.
37:35Okay.
37:36As long as I live.
37:38Japtakajan.

37:40Guess the songs based on the English translation.

37:50Oh, beautiful hair darling.
37:52Oh, Hasina Zulfovali.

38:04Who am I?
38:06No, no, not me.
38:07It's a good one.
38:11You thought he would say Karan Johar and win.
38:13I was about to say something.
38:21I would have made a song out of it.
38:23Who am I?
38:24I'm gone.

39:45Tie-breaker.
39:47It's a famous question that I've asked on the show before.
39:50What is the name of the dog in Hamaap Keha Korn?
39:55Are you kidding?
39:57No, it's not right.
40:00Tommy.

40:07Last tie-breaking question again.
40:09You haven't got this.
40:10Who in the fraternity, in the Hindi film industry, in the yesteryear zone of the Hindi film fraternity,

40:35Now you're telling him he's going to be cursed.
40:37Next, you're going to hit him.
40:39What are you going to not do to win?
40:42Okay, it's a grand tie.
40:43I have no other tie-breaking question.
40:45It's a tie.
40:46You all have tied at the quiz, which has not happened on this show.
40:48Well done.
40:49You all both get presents.
40:51That's fine.
40:51Can we know what is the name of the dog from Hamaap Keha Korn?

41:17No.
41:18Why wouldn't my idea?
41:18I love toughy.
41:19Toughy runs on that background music.
41:21Radhe Krishnan, Gopala Krishnan, Radhe Krishnan.
41:24Gopala Krishnan.
41:25Taufi runs and saves the world.
41:26I remember.

42:16Zoya.

42:19You see?
42:22Thank you, Zoya.

42:45I love you.
43:15She's not my daughter.
43:15She's not your daughter?
43:16She's Kapoor's daughter.
43:18You see, there's a relationship which we have with Kapoor's.
43:21Yeah.
43:21So, you know.
43:22So, she's related via satellite.
43:24Rabish.
43:25Hey, what the hell is it?
43:26I'd walk slow because of her.
43:28She's slowing you down?
43:29Yeah, absolutely.
43:29She's slowing me down.
43:30Aging him and slowing him down both.
43:32I think he's trying to say that I look more like your father than he does.
43:36I do mean yes.
43:37That is the point.
43:38He can't get hates and hampers.
43:40He can't.
43:41You have to choose.
43:41Hate hampers.
43:43I've come here all dressed up.
