00:03:09Happy Christmas.
00:03:12With it.
00:03:26Hi, Marjorie.
00:03:28I just want to let you know that there's a Commissioner Patterson arriving.
00:03:33It's a serious situation over here.
00:03:36Give him access to anything he needs.
00:03:39I've told the police here that we're going to cooperate fully.
00:03:42Will do, Helen.
00:03:43Oh, I hear him now.
00:03:44We'll speak later.
00:03:46Okay.
00:03:49You must be the policeman from the Caribbean.
00:03:52Commissioner Patterson, is it?
00:03:54Selwyn Patterson.
00:03:56So, um, what has actually happened out there?
00:04:00The police were called to your colleague's holiday villa, where, I'm sorry to see, a man was formed, shot dead, murdered.
00:04:09I'm sorry to see, a man was born.
00:04:39Morning, Miss Baudet.
00:04:55Morning, Seb.
00:04:56It's a final rehearsal for the Nativity this evening.
00:04:59I wish you all the best, and good luck to you, little king people.
00:05:04Yes, I, yes, yes.
00:05:06Allie, let's go.
00:05:16Good morning, Sarge.
00:05:18Morning, Seb.
00:05:19Got a card from Darlene.
00:05:21Looks like she won't make it back for Christmas.
00:05:24Her auntie's still sick, so she's staying on Montserrat.
00:05:27Nothing in the post for the inspector, you know, from Antica.
00:05:32His brother, you mean?
00:05:34It's been three months.
00:05:36I guess it's like a lot, you know?
00:05:38I mean, in getting a letter from a breadie you never knew you had.
00:05:43Might take some time.
00:05:44I just feel sorry for him.
00:05:46He keeps saying he's fine about it, but I don't think he is.
00:05:52Where is D.I. Wilson?
00:05:54Rehearsing.
00:05:55Oh, yes.
00:05:56Oh, I am so jealous.
00:05:58He must be hyped up to wear that costume, huh?
00:06:00I bet he is.
00:06:04I'm really not happy about this.
00:06:05Why not, Mervyn?
00:06:07Because I look like a ninny.
00:06:08No, you don't.
00:06:10You look very...
00:06:13authentic.
00:06:14I just don't think the boots are helping.
00:06:20Look, with all due respect, Miss Baudet,
00:06:22I just think it'd be better off finding somebody else for this.
00:06:26You know, somebody less...
00:06:28me.
00:06:28Mervyn, it has always been the commissioner
00:06:31who carries out this task for me.
00:06:34With him gone.
00:06:35Inspector.
00:06:37Great.
00:06:38Yes, sir.
00:06:39You look cool, man.
00:06:40Not another word.
00:06:41No, no.
00:06:43Could we have a chat, sir?
00:06:50We have a murder to attend.
00:06:53For real?
00:06:56Well, that's up, then.
00:06:57I've got word to do.
00:06:59Conversation over.
00:07:00Conversation paused.
00:07:01Sorry, Catherine.
00:07:02Come on, let's go.
00:07:06Inspector.
00:07:08You think maybe you should change first?
00:07:10Victim's name is Darion St. Jules.
00:07:39He's a local fisherman, lives half a mile up the coast.
00:07:43Right.
00:07:45The guests staying here are from the UK.
00:07:46They all say they haven't a clue who he is or what he was doing here.
00:07:51But clearly, someone must have shot him and left him there.
00:07:55Right.
00:07:55No sign of the gun, but paramedic sourcing with the bullet still lodged in the victim's shoulder.
00:08:02Cause of death was possibly from internal bleeding.
00:08:06Right.
00:08:07And what about you, Inspector?
00:08:09Anything of interest?
00:08:12Well, he certainly liked his aftershave.
00:08:15Have a sniff.
00:08:15I guess that's pretty strong.
00:08:23I don't know if it's cause of his work.
00:08:25You know, slapped on the old cologne to cover the smell of fish.
00:08:28I know a big man in Tootin did the same thing.
00:08:30And that's what bothers you the most?
00:08:32The fact that the victim used a bit too much aftershave.
00:08:34Actually, what's bothering me the most is what's written on the palm of his left hand.
00:08:43Blitzen.
00:08:44Like the reindeer.
00:08:46It's the only one I can think of.
00:08:49Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comic, Cupid, Donna, Blitzen.
00:08:55And Rudolf.
00:08:56Thank you, Officer Rose.
00:09:00The ink seems fresh.
00:09:02Which means he wrote it in the last 12 hours or so.
00:09:06And then not long after, he was shot.
00:09:09When it is Christmas, sir, could just be a coincidence.
00:09:18We've no idea who this guy is or what he's doing in our villa.
00:09:21So how can we know why he wrote the name of one of Santa's reindeer on his hand?
00:09:24I don't know.
00:09:25I'm just asking the question.
00:09:26Not a problem, is it?
00:09:29No.
00:09:30No, of course not.
00:09:32Let's start with you telling me what you're doing here on St. Marie.
00:09:35Well, we flew here for our office Christmas party.
00:09:38It wasn't cheap.
00:09:40We were having the time of our lives.
00:09:45No, I'm blasting!
00:09:46Lights a bee!
00:09:48Lights a bee!
00:09:49No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:09:51No!
00:09:53Oh my God, found it!
00:09:54Everyone get in!
00:09:54Maybe talk us through the events of last night.
00:10:03Yeah, what happened exactly?
00:10:05We said we'd take it easy for our last night.
00:10:07Then we got back here and carried on drinking.
00:10:21Yeah, looks like quite a party you had.
00:10:23Yeah, done right it was.
00:10:27Sorry, that's not appropriate.
00:10:28The rum out here, um, it's stronger than we used to.
00:10:32Oh!
00:10:33What happened to the farm?
00:10:36One more straight away and no one is allowed to.
00:10:39Come on, it's our last night!
00:10:40And what time did the party end?
00:10:44I haven't got a clue, mate, to be honest.
00:10:46Yeah, it's all a little bit hazy.
00:10:48I really don't remember very much.
00:10:50You lot are lightweight, man.
00:10:53I remember everything.
00:10:56Helen, you and me put Neil to bed about midnight.
00:10:59I'm sure I wasn't that bad.
00:11:00Oh, you so were.
00:11:03Oh, he's always had a low tolerance.
00:11:05Mum?
00:11:06Sorry, love.
00:11:08Can we just...
00:11:10Yeah, Helen, you went to bed as well.
00:11:14Me and you kept on it till about half three.
00:11:19Gab, you were so cute.
00:11:20You were dead to the world by then.
00:11:22So, uh, I left you asleep in the hammock.
00:11:26And then what?
00:11:30Oh, and then, um, the taxi for the airport woke me up.
00:11:35Everyone!
00:11:36Wake up!
00:11:38Wake up!
00:11:40That's when I saw him.
00:11:42I thought he was asleep at first.
00:11:44But when I got closer, I saw the blood.
00:11:47Someone call an ambulance!
00:11:48Now!
00:11:51You were in the hammock when whatever happened, happened.
00:11:54You didn't hear the gunshot?
00:11:55Well, yeah, yeah, you'd have thought.
00:11:57But, well, it's like Helen said, you know, the room out here, it's, uh...
00:12:00Stronger than you used to.
00:12:03Inspector!
00:12:05That's something you should see.
00:12:09This is the only security camera footage from the villa.
00:12:12Footage is from this morning, outside the front door.
00:12:15The victim arrives at 5.32am, heads inside.
00:12:19The door was unlocked, so he let himself in.
00:12:22After that, nobody is seen leaving or arriving.
00:12:25So, the only way in or out is from the front.
00:12:27And the drop at the back is too steep for access.
00:12:31So, it's got to be one of these four who shot Darren in St. Jules.
00:12:35Which means the gun that they used must still be here.
00:12:38But they're all saying they've never met him before.
00:12:40So, why would one of them kill a total stranger?
00:12:57Hello, can I help you?
00:12:59Have you come to check in?
00:13:00The name's Helen Dugdale.
00:13:02Of course, one moment, please.
00:13:05I can't believe they're not letting us fly home.
00:13:08This police overreach is what it is.
00:13:10So much for doing something different.
00:13:14Should have just gone under the red line like last year.
00:13:17None of this would have happened.
00:13:20Girl, do you think there's something Helen's not telling us?
00:13:25She's been on edge ever since the police arrived.
00:13:36So, why did Darian go to that villa at 5.30 in the morning?
00:13:39Hmm.
00:13:40Let's see what we find at his house.
00:13:47How are you getting on, sir?
00:13:49Well, I haven't found anything that connects a victim to the suspects.
00:13:52But I have found this.
00:13:55The victim's aftershave.
00:13:56Really?
00:13:57This again?
00:13:57It's different to the one he was wearing at the crime scene.
00:14:00Here, have a sniff.
00:14:05I haven't found any others here.
00:14:06And there certainly wasn't one on his person.
00:14:08So, why did he smell different to the brand of aftershave that he owned?
00:14:11So, I searched the suspects, the villa, and surrounding areas.
00:14:31And there was no gun.
00:14:34No, it has to be there.
00:14:35No one left the villa after the victim was shot, so the weapon has to be there somewhere.
00:14:39Yeah, no, I totally get the logic, Inspector.
00:14:41But you're staying there?
00:14:43For definite, there's no gun at the villa.
00:14:45But that doesn't make any sense.
00:14:46So, sorry.
00:14:47Excuse me.
00:14:48Hello?
00:14:49Yes!
00:14:50Well, this is a strange one.
00:14:52We've got four people suspected of shooting a man they don't know, with a gun they don't have.
00:14:57Let's start working through the victim's laptop, see what's on there.
00:14:59We need to find that gun.
00:15:03What?
00:15:04Actually, sir, it's the Nativity Service, if you'd forgotten.
00:15:08Are you serious?
00:15:09And we promised Catherine we'd make sure you get there.
00:15:13Look, we've got a murder case to solve, in case you hadn't noticed.
00:15:16And I haven't got time for play-acting with a bunch of kids at some school nativity.
00:15:21Then you better find the time, Inspector.
00:15:26Why is she...
00:15:28Good evening to you, Inspector.
00:15:30Officer Curtis, what's a pleasant surprise?
00:15:33My niece is performing in the Nativity tonight.
00:15:37And word has got back to me that they might not have a narrator.
00:15:41Because the man who is supposed to be doing it is being a grumpy goose about the whole thing.
00:15:46Grumpy...
00:15:47Now, listen...
00:15:48No, you listen to me.
00:15:49You are doing it.
00:15:51End of.
00:15:52So get your backside down to that church and man up.
00:15:55You know what, I never did like this sort of thing.
00:16:14The Nativity, the carol services.
00:16:17Right.
00:16:18Is there anything about Christmas you do like, sir?
00:16:21No, not really.
00:16:22Oh, hang on.
00:16:23Yeah.
00:16:24The Great Escape.
00:16:25The what?
00:16:26The Great Escape.
00:16:28The movie.
00:16:29It was on telly every Christmas.
00:16:31You know, with the motorcycle stunt.
00:16:33And the cooler.
00:16:34The dirt down the trousers.
00:16:38No, I give up.
00:16:39Me too.
00:16:40Nervyn, we're waiting.
00:16:42Ready when you are.
00:16:42Right.
00:16:48Right.
00:16:49Um, here we go then.
00:16:52I guess.
00:16:53Yes.
00:16:53You okay?
00:17:14Okay?
00:17:17Okay, then.
00:17:23A long time ago, in the town of Nazareth, there lived a young woman named Mary.
00:17:29She was engaged to a carpenter named Joseph.
00:17:32I understand he didn't want to wear a costume, but did he really have to do it in the heart?
00:17:39And then one day, an angel called Gabriel came to Mary and said to her...
00:17:47Sorry, it was...
00:17:59It was mine.
00:18:00I knew it was going to be his.
00:18:07Sir.
00:18:08Sir.
00:18:11It's someone calling from Antigua.
00:18:14It could be...
00:18:15Your brother.
00:18:17Listen, sorry, everyone.
00:18:20I need to take this, yeah?
00:18:27Well, I think one of us shoot her.
00:18:30Don't worry, Miss Baudet.
00:18:32Officer Sebastian rose to the rescue.
00:18:35Yes, my little king people.
00:18:37Oh, God.
00:18:40Woo!
00:18:40So, a long, long time ago, in the town of Nazareth, there lived a young woman, very nice woman.
00:18:49Her name was Mary.
00:18:50She was engaged to a carpenter named Joseph.
00:18:53Mr. Wilson, it's Tyrese at Cariba Phone Network.
00:19:07I just noticed your contract's coming up in the new year, and I thought we could have a chat about upgrading your phone.
00:19:16Mr. Wilson, are you still there?
00:19:17Yeah, I'm here.
00:19:19Um, no, no upgrade, thanks.
00:19:22Are you sure about that, cousin?
00:19:24You've got something tough.
00:19:25I'm here.
00:19:44The angels didn't sing
00:19:48Was to certain poor shepherds
00:19:53It builds as they lay
00:19:58It builds as they lay
00:20:03Deep in the sea
00:20:14Hey sir, you didn't come back
00:20:35Just wanted to check how you're doing
00:20:38Yeah, it wasn't Solomon on the phone
00:20:41Anyway, I've been thinking
00:20:43We really don't know anything about these people
00:20:47You know, their lives in the UK
00:20:50I was thinking we could use someone to do a bit of digging
00:20:53Into our suspects back in their hometown
00:20:55Right, you want me to get in touch with the Swindon police?
00:20:57No, no, no, I've already done that
00:20:59They're flat out till New Year
00:21:01But then I remembered we do have someone in the UK
00:21:03Who maybe could give us a hand
00:21:13Ah, you must be the policeman from the Caribbean
00:21:16Commissioner Patterson, is it?
00:21:18Selwyn Patterson
00:21:20I'm no longer a commissioner
00:21:22I'm retired now
00:21:23Right, okay
00:21:25So now you're just...
00:21:27Helping out
00:21:28Somewhat reluctantly
00:21:29If I'm honest with you
00:21:31So what has actually happened out there?
00:21:35The police were called to your colleague's holiday villa
00:21:38Where I'm sorry to see
00:21:40A man was found
00:21:41Shot dead
00:21:42Murdered
00:21:43I'm keen to get on with things and get out of here as quickly as I can
00:21:48Rightio
00:21:50Well, I'll give you the guided tour
00:21:52Welcome to Dugdale's branded merchandise
00:21:55So, that desk over there is Helen
00:22:00She's the managing director
00:22:02This desk belongs to our graphic designer, Gavin
00:22:06Accounts manager, Neil
00:22:08And Karen, head of sales
00:22:10And this one?
00:22:12Oh, oh, she's not here anymore
00:22:14She left a couple of months ago
00:22:17Who?
00:22:18Ashley
00:22:19Ashley Simms, her name was
00:22:21It was all somewhat clandestine, if you ask me, Mr Patterson
00:22:29She did what they call a midnight flit
00:22:31Never came back
00:22:34Are you sure you don't want a cup of tea?
00:22:36I'm going to make myself one
00:22:38This drawer is locked
00:22:40Oh, yes, it's been like that since Ashley left
00:22:42She has the only key
00:22:44I've been meaning to sort it
00:22:46Commissioner, you do know what time it is over here, right?
00:22:48Half past three in the morning
00:22:49But as I have abandoned Woodfriend's wedding to travel to Swindon
00:22:51And help you out
00:22:52Okay, fair do's
00:22:53How can I help?
00:22:54The bullet you recovered from your victim
00:22:56Have you had the ballistics report back on it, yeah?
00:22:58Yeah, it was a .45 calibre
00:23:00Most likely fired from a pistol
00:23:02And did you find the weapon?
00:23:03No
00:23:04Why?
00:23:05No
00:23:06Why?
00:23:07No
00:23:08No
00:23:09No
00:23:10No
00:23:11No
00:23:12No
00:23:13No
00:23:14No
00:23:15No
00:23:16No
00:23:17No
00:23:18No
00:23:19No
00:23:20No
00:23:21No
00:23:22No
00:23:23No
00:23:24No
00:23:25No
00:23:26No
00:23:27No
00:23:28No
00:23:29No
00:23:30No
00:23:31Why?
00:23:32Because I'm currently looking at a .45 calibre pistol in a desk drawer in Swindon
00:23:41It can't be the same one
00:23:43Can it?
00:23:45Can it?
00:24:02Morning sir
00:24:03Morning inspector
00:24:04This can't be right
00:24:06It just can't be
00:24:07What's going on?
00:24:08Commissioner found a gun
00:24:10Locked in the desk drawer of an ex-employee called Ashley Simms in the Dugdale's offices back in the UK
00:24:15What?
00:24:16Local forensic lab fast tracked it and they say that is the gun that fired the bullet that killed Darren St. Jules
00:24:23Look, security footage shows that no one touched that drawer since the shooting
00:24:28Wait, so how was that gun used to shoot Darren St. Jules on this island if the same gun was locked in a drawer 5,000 miles away?
00:24:35I know, right? It makes no sense
00:24:40We need to speak to Helen Dugdale
00:24:54Helen?
00:24:55If you're in there can you open the door please?
00:24:57We need to speak with you about Ashley Simms
00:25:05There's something you need to see
00:25:08I guess
00:25:10I want to say sorry
00:25:13I know it's not enough
00:25:15And
00:25:16It won't change how you feel about me
00:25:18But
00:25:19I do mean it
00:25:24I don't know why I keep doing this
00:25:27I blow everything up
00:25:32But
00:25:34This is why I've come here
00:25:35To get away
00:25:38To get away
00:25:42Try and understand
00:25:44Why I
00:25:46hurt people
00:25:48That's Ashley
00:25:49The way that I do
00:25:53She stole from me from the company
00:25:55How much?
00:25:56500,000 pounds
00:25:57Ouch
00:25:58Ouch
00:25:59My husband, Keith
00:26:01Dougdales was his company
00:26:03Until he passed away at the start of the year from a heart attack
00:26:06I'm sorry to hear that
00:26:08That's when I took over the reins
00:26:12I really wanted to make it work
00:26:14And it was around that time that we had a position to fill
00:26:16And you gave the job to Miss Simms
00:26:19I knew she had a past that she'd been to prison
00:26:21But Keith always believed in giving people a second chance
00:26:24And I wanted to honour that
00:26:26What Miss Simms let you down?
00:26:28Not even a year has passed and I've already lost half a million pounds
00:26:32Did you report Ashley to the police?
00:26:34I was too embarrassed
00:26:36So I hired someone to find out where she sent the email from
00:26:41And that video she recorded
00:26:43That was sent from this island?
00:26:45Yes
00:26:47Okay, so what does any of this have to do with Darian St. George?
00:26:51The man I hired discovered that Darian had rented a holiday let to Ashley
00:26:55That's why I came here to try and get my money back
00:26:57I made sure our villa wasn't far from Darian's house
00:27:00So it would be easy to go and visit him
00:27:02So you were lying when you told us you didn't know Darian?
00:27:04Did you meet with him?
00:27:06Yes, a few days ago
00:27:08He confirmed that Ashley had rented this little place he has down on the beach
00:27:13That so?
00:27:15So she was definitely here?
00:27:17She'd arrived a few months ago at the start of October
00:27:20He still had all the paperwork
00:27:22But he said that she'd moved on a few days ago and he didn't know where
00:27:27So what was Darian doing turning up at your villa in the early hours yesterday?
00:27:31I don't know
00:27:33I really don't
00:27:35How much do the others know about this?
00:27:36Nothing, they don't know anything
00:27:38They think they're on a works due
00:27:39Not even your son?
00:27:41No, not even Neil
00:27:43So then the only person who knew Darian and therefore wanted him killed was you?
00:27:47No, I swear I didn't
00:27:49I can see how this looks
00:27:52But I didn't shoot him
00:27:55I don't...
00:27:57I need to take this
00:28:03Commissioner, you got something?
00:28:05Inspector, I've searched Ashley Simms' flat and emailed you over some photographs
00:28:09I'm afraid there is little of use to your investigation
00:28:13I think she cleared out her flat before she flew to the Caribbean
00:28:17Okay, thanks anyway, sir
00:28:19Now, if that is everything, I'm going to catch my train and enjoy the rest of my Christmas
00:28:25Yeah, you have a good one, sir
00:28:27And you, Inspector, and you
00:28:28And you
00:28:36Thank you for your help, Miss Woods
00:28:39Oh, I didn't do anything really
00:28:42And you're nothing if not efficient
00:28:45So, what are your plans for Christmas?
00:28:48I'm spending it with my daughter and her partner
00:28:52They've rented a cottage up in the, um, Yorkshire Dales
00:28:56Oh, it's lovely up there
00:28:58So, I'm told, I better...
00:29:00I'm flying solo this Christmas
00:29:02I mean, that's how it's been since Mum passed, just me, myself and I
00:29:07Sorry, I really...
00:29:09Oh, no, no, no, I rather enjoy it actually
00:29:11You know, there's no family arguments
00:29:14I can eat what I like, watch what I want on the telly
00:29:17Christmas alone is underrated, I say
00:29:20Indeed
00:29:22No, I really don't want to miss my train
00:29:25Oh, God!
00:29:29Goodbye, Mr Patterson
00:29:31Goodbye
00:29:33And Merry Christmas
00:29:35And a very Merry Christmas to you
00:29:40Four passengers on platform
00:29:43One, awaiting the three, fifteen, two, leave
00:29:47Please be aware that due to frost on the line
00:29:50This train is now delayed
00:29:52Please wait for further announcements
00:30:11So, immigration confirmed Ashley Sims arrived on the island two months ago
00:30:17But they have no record of her ever leaving
00:30:20So, in theory, she's still here
00:30:22Mm-mm
00:30:25Okay, Officer Rose, I want you to check the harbours
00:30:28See if anyone matching Ashley's description was taken to one of the other islands in the last few days
00:30:32Ashley Harbour, last few days, got you
00:30:34Check the hotels, holiday rentals, guest houses on the island
00:30:37Hotels, rentals, guest houses, got you
00:30:38You need to do whatever it takes to find her, do you understand?
00:30:42Cool, totally getting you right now, Inspector
00:30:44I guess that means we're working Christmas Day then
00:30:47Obviously, it's a murder investigation
00:30:49And we need to find out who did it
00:30:51Right, only...
00:30:53That's a lot of work for Seb to do by himself over Christmas
00:30:56Well, my mother has a whole church thing going on and everybody else is busy, so
00:31:01It's cool
00:31:03There you go, sorted
00:31:05Thanks, Seb
00:31:07No worries, see you in a bit
00:31:09I'll let my parents know I won't be flying home this evening
00:31:14Appreciate it
00:31:16Ashley Sims aside, we still don't have a scooby how the killer made the gun they shot Darian with disappear from that villa, then reappear in a locked desk drawer back in the UK
00:31:26And that, Blitzen, what's that about?
00:31:31Unless it has nothing to do with Darian's murder, sir, and it is just a co...
00:31:36You don't believe in coincidences
00:31:39I mean, in what circumstance does someone write the name of one of Santa's reindeer on the palm of their hand?
00:31:43Are you doing all right, sir? After last night?
00:31:53Look, if Solomon doesn't want to get in touch, I'm cool with that
00:31:56Well...
00:31:57DS Thomas
00:31:58I'd rather we didn't talk about it anymore
00:32:01All right?
00:32:02I'm at Swindon East
00:32:05And?
00:32:06Your tannoy keeps announcing there is a rail replacement service to Leeds, but it hasn't turned up
00:32:13Yeah, it got cancelled, yes
00:32:16I'm sorry?
00:32:18The service replacement service has been replaced by Leeds, but it hasn't turned up
00:32:22Yeah, it got cancelled, yes
00:32:24I'm sorry?
00:32:26The service replacement service has been replaced by Leeds, but it hasn't turned up
00:32:29I'm sorry?
00:32:30The service replacing the service that got cancelled also got cancelled?
00:32:36Yeah, that's about the sound of it
00:32:38No more trains until Foxy Day
00:32:41So, what do you suggest I do?
00:32:44You know, mate
00:32:46Have a merry one, yeah?
00:32:48See ya!
00:32:51And a Merry Christmas to you, too
00:32:59I'm sorry, mate, but it's Christmas Eve and none of my drivers are going to want to go outside of Swindon
00:33:07You trying to hire a car company?
00:33:10Yes, but nothing is available in the area until the 27th
00:33:14You have no rooms available at all?
00:33:24We're fully booked, everywhere will be this time of year
00:33:27Maybe you could try the Salvation Army?
00:33:37This is Andrina, leave me a message when you hear the beep
00:33:39It's me, I'm still in Swindon
00:33:45There's no transport, no hotels
00:33:48And there's no one here who seems able to help me
00:33:52And I don't know what to do
00:34:00Mr Patterson
00:34:01I think you'd better come with me
00:34:10How did you know I would still be here?
00:34:13Had the local radio on
00:34:14Said all trains cancelled
00:34:17And we've got to look after each other at Christmas, haven't we?
00:34:23Thank you, Miss Dobbs
00:34:26It must be freezing
00:34:27Yes, after you
00:34:28Thank you
00:34:31Good morning to you all
00:34:33It's 6 o'clock on this beautiful Christmas Day morning here on San Marie
00:34:37And there's a surprise guest with me here in the studio
00:34:40I've got a young officer, Sebastian Rose, from the San Marie Police, talking with me right now
00:34:45Yes, it is me, Officer Sebastian Rose, from Honoré Police Station
00:34:46Merry Christmas everybody
00:34:47He and his colleagues want your help looking for a young woman called Ashley Sims, am I right?
00:34:48That is it, you are totally right, Alphonse
00:34:49If anybody has heard anything, or seen anything
00:34:50Anything
00:34:51Well, what I would say, Jacinta, is
00:34:53Is
00:34:54Even if it was just a glimpse, one of your few returning this woman
00:34:55Is
00:34:56I've got a young officer, Sebastian Rose, from the San Marie Police talking with me right now
00:34:57Yes, it is me, Officer Sebastian Rose, from Honoré Police Station
00:35:01Merry Christmas everybody
00:35:02He and his colleagues want your help looking for a young woman called Ashley Sims, am I right?
00:35:05That is it, you are totally right, Alphonse
00:35:06If anybody has heard anything, or seen anything
00:35:07Thank you
00:35:08Well, what I would say, Jacinta, is
00:35:09Even if it was just a glimpse, one of your few returning this woman, they should still get in touch
00:35:12Oh, Seb
00:35:13Oh and also, the people can check out the video I made on our social media page, at SMPolice
00:35:34If you see her call, it's number Ashley Simms.
00:35:39Have you seen her?
00:35:40If you see her call, it's number Ashley Simms.
00:35:44Have you seen her?
00:35:45If you see her call...
00:36:00Commissioner, morning.
00:36:02This is a surprise.
00:36:03Inspector, have you seen that video Officer Rose has put on social media?
00:36:09It's deeply inappropriate.
00:36:12Would you like another sherry, Selwyn?
00:36:14Er...
00:36:15No.
00:36:19Is that...
00:36:21Is that the receptionist?
00:36:23Marjorie Dolce.
00:36:24I'm spending Christmas Day with her.
00:36:27Well, I'm glad you two hit it off. Good for you, sir.
00:36:30It's not like that, Inspector.
00:36:32I got stock in Swindon.
00:36:33There were no trains to Leeds.
00:36:35OK.
00:36:36Look, just take that video down.
00:36:38No disrespect, sir, but it's not really your problem anymore, is it?
00:36:42Just sort it, Inspector.
00:36:44Yeah, I've got his bank statement in front of me.
00:36:56That's great.
00:36:57Could you email it over?
00:36:58I'll do that right away.
00:36:59Cheers.
00:37:00I'll do that right away.
00:37:01Cheers.
00:37:02Cheers.
00:37:03Cheers.
00:37:04Cheers.
00:37:05Cheers.
00:37:06Cheers.
00:37:07Have you seen her call this number?
00:37:11Literally every tree.
00:37:13Have you seen her call this number?
00:37:16Ask Chris since have you seen us?
00:37:18Have you seen her call this number?
00:37:23All right, I'm coming.
00:37:29I've got lead.
00:37:30A possible suspect for Darian St. Julesy's murder.
00:37:33I need to go and talk with them now.
00:37:35Merry Christmas, sir.
00:37:37Oh, um...
00:37:40Merry Christmas.
00:37:43I'll be right with you.
00:37:55Our financial checks show that two days ago
00:37:58you wired £100,000 from this island
00:38:01to your bank account back in England.
00:38:03No, he didn't.
00:38:07What?
00:38:10You want to tell us where you got that money from?
00:38:13What did you do, Neil?
00:38:16Yes, Neil. What did you do?
00:38:18I followed you.
00:38:20Why?
00:38:21You were acting so weird.
00:38:24A few days ago when you went off by yourself.
00:38:27I knew that it had to be about the money that Ashley had taken.
00:38:30I'm sorry.
00:38:31I didn't understand why you didn't tell me.
00:38:32I didn't understand why you didn't tell me.
00:38:33And I know you were just trying to protect me, Mum.
00:38:34I was worried about you.
00:38:36I was just trying to help.
00:38:40So I waited until the guy, Darian, had left.
00:38:44The door was unlocked so I let myself in.
00:38:46There wasn't anything I could find.
00:38:48Until I found an old biscuit tin.
00:38:50Full of money.
00:38:52And what did you think?
00:38:53When he opened it and saw £100,000 in cash inside.
00:38:57Well, I still think that it was money that belonged to the company.
00:39:01I mean, why else would this local fisherman have that much money in Stirling in his house?
00:39:06And that's why you took it?
00:39:07Because it was money that Ashley had stolen from us.
00:39:09From Mum.
00:39:13And I don't want to see her lose everything.
00:39:17Oh, she'd already lost my dad.
00:39:19Sweet.
00:39:24Alright.
00:39:26Okay.
00:39:27So, fast forward to the morning you're due to leave the island, yeah?
00:39:32And our victim turns up at 5.30.
00:39:35We've been trying to work out why he went there that morning.
00:39:38But what if he realised that you stole from him and came to confront you about it?
00:39:43No.
00:39:45On my life, I didn't even see him that morning.
00:39:48This aftershave.
00:39:49It's yours, right?
00:39:50Ravage Mystique.
00:39:51Yeah?
00:39:52Why?
00:39:53This is the exact same aftershave Darian was wearing.
00:39:56The morning of the murder.
00:39:58Right?
00:40:01You're not suggesting that this is evidence I shot him.
00:40:03Why would I kill someone and then spray him with my own aftershave?
00:40:08Achoo!
00:40:12Darian definitely smelt of this when we found him.
00:40:15But why?
00:40:17What if there was another smell the killer was trying to hide?
00:40:22You know?
00:40:23A bit like a bin man.
00:40:25Yeah, but...
00:40:26What?
00:40:29Neil's right.
00:40:30It's not enough.
00:40:32Some Christmas this is.
00:40:34Oh.
00:40:35Come here.
00:40:36Give your mum a hug.
00:40:38Oh, I am sorry.
00:40:39Marjorie.
00:40:43Oh.
00:40:44No.
00:40:45Not now, Marjorie.
00:40:47Hi.
00:40:48This is Helen Dugdale's phone.
00:40:49Please leave a message after the tone and I'll call you back.
00:40:52Hello, Helen.
00:40:53It's Marjorie.
00:40:54I'm phoning to wish you a Merry Christmas.
00:40:56We're about to have our lunch and I just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you.
00:41:01Hope everything sorts itself out soon.
00:41:12Dinner is served.
00:41:18This looks wonderful.
00:41:22Here's to a Merry Christmas.
00:41:29Merry Christmas.
00:41:35Right then.
00:41:36Tuck in.
00:41:40I would like to offer you an apology, Miss Dodds.
00:41:44Oh, Marjorie, please.
00:41:47There's really no need for an apology.
00:41:49Oh, there is.
00:41:50You've been nothing but gracious and welcoming for the last couple of days.
00:41:55While I...
00:41:57I've been nothing but, um...
00:41:59rowdy.
00:42:01No, no.
00:42:02I wouldn't go that far.
00:42:05Though...
00:42:07I did sense you weren't very happy.
00:42:10Is it to do with your old job?
00:42:13What makes you ask that?
00:42:14I don't know.
00:42:15It's...
00:42:16It's just...
00:42:17When we first met, the way you said you were retired, it was like you weren't entirely comfortable with it.
00:42:23My superiors back on Saint Marie, they tried to get rid of me after 50 years of doing a job I loved.
00:42:32In the end, I...
00:42:34I just walked away.
00:42:36I know what it's like.
00:42:38I'm just silly old Marjorie on reception.
00:42:42Don't even get invited to the Christmas party they're having out there.
00:42:43I'm sorry.
00:42:44And I've always wanted to go to the Caribbean.
00:42:45Look at us.
00:42:46Moving like this on Christmas Day.
00:42:47When you cook this feast for us, we should be enjoying ourselves.
00:42:48Here.
00:42:49Will you do me the pleasure?
00:42:50Oh, well, if you insist.
00:42:51I'm sorry.
00:42:53And I've always wanted to go to the Caribbean.
00:43:02Look at us.
00:43:04Moving like this on Christmas Day.
00:43:07When you cook this feast for us, we should be enjoying ourselves.
00:43:12Here.
00:43:14Will you do me the pleasure?
00:43:15No pleasure.
00:43:16Oh, well, if you insist.
00:43:20I won!
00:43:21I won!
00:43:23Oh, where's it gone?
00:43:24Where's it gone?
00:43:25No!
00:43:29There it is.
00:43:31It's a tiny little sewing kit.
00:43:38All right.
00:43:39Let me check with the inspector.
00:43:41Okay, I'll speak to you soon.
00:43:42All right.
00:43:44Hey!
00:43:46Merry Christmas, guys.
00:43:47Merry Christmas, Seb.
00:43:48Yeah, ditto.
00:43:50Now, where are we at with the search for Ashley Sims?
00:43:53So, B&Bs, hotels, guest horses, nobody's heard from her.
00:43:58And no one's called in with her sighting either.
00:44:00It's like she's vanished into thin air.
00:44:01Oh, and Katherine just called.
00:44:03She said she can still squeeze us in for her Christmas Day lunch, but it's her last sitting, so we have to go now.
00:44:09Are we still asking ourselves, how was Darian shot with a bullet, fired from a gun, locked in a drawer in Swindon at the time that it happened?
00:44:17And what has Blitzen got to do with all of this?
00:44:20Are you coming, sir?
00:44:24Well, yeah, you guys go. I'll just keep working.
00:44:28Are you sure, sir?
00:44:30Wait a minute.
00:44:32What are these?
00:44:33What are these?
00:44:34Oh, those are the invices, sir, you know?
00:44:36For the stuff I organized to help find Ashley Sims.
00:44:40You have posters, adverts for TV and radio, and...
00:44:43There's over a thousand dollars that we owe. We can't afford this.
00:44:46Well...
00:44:47Well, how big do you think our budget was?
00:44:48It's only because you said whatever it takes.
00:44:51Yeah, but not this much!
00:44:53I mean, what were you thinking?
00:44:54All right, let's... let's calm it.
00:44:57Seb, why don't you head over to Catherine's and I'll catch up with you.
00:45:09With respect, he's just doing his best to help.
00:45:14And he's given up his Christmas to do it, sir.
00:45:19Look, I know the case is frustrating and you've got other things on your mind.
00:45:23What other things?
00:45:24Well, your brother not calling.
00:45:27What? That's not bothering me.
00:45:30It isn't.
00:45:31It isn't?
00:45:32No, it isn't!
00:45:33Yes, it is!
00:45:34Of course it is!
00:45:36And I really wish you'd just admit that rather than pretending like you don't care when you so clearly care!
00:45:54Just don't take it out on the rest of us.
00:46:24It isn't.
00:46:29Joyeux Noël, Camille.
00:46:31And to little Chloe.
00:46:33Her grandmother is missing her today.
00:46:35Has she opened a present yet?
00:46:36No, not yet.
00:46:38Ah, one moment, Camille.
00:46:40Yes, okay.
00:46:41Yes, sir.
00:46:48No, Mervyn?
00:46:50Yes.
00:46:52Yes.
00:46:53I don't know.
00:47:53Inspector, everything all right?
00:47:56I'm feeling bad, sir, about messing up your Christmas.
00:47:59I'm sorry you couldn't get to spend it with your daughter.
00:48:01It's not your fault.
00:48:02If anyone's to blame, it's the British transport system,
00:48:06which I am told is not uncommon.
00:48:09I mean, I'd like to say you get used to it by being lying.
00:48:13Just a minute.
00:48:23Is that the sea?
00:48:30I can't hear.
00:48:31Yeah.
00:48:32I'm at the shack.
00:48:34It's beautiful out here.
00:48:35It's a really clear night.
00:48:37But then all nights are like that here, aren't they?
00:48:39The moon here is a little more grey than I remember it in St. Marie.
00:48:44I'm just wondering if I made a mistake staying on in St. Marie.
00:48:57Why?
00:48:58Because I know I'm not good when I put myself on the line.
00:49:02I feel like I'm just hanging around, waiting.
00:49:06Your brother?
00:49:07Yeah.
00:49:09Yeah.
00:49:13I don't think he wants to get in touch.
00:49:19I'm sorry, it's not really your problem anymore, is it?
00:49:22Whether I stay or go.
00:49:23It still feels like it is.
00:49:30Inspector.
00:49:31If you are not sure what to do,
00:49:33the only advice I can offer is that
00:49:36you put your trust in that island.
00:49:39I did for most of my life.
00:49:43And in return,
00:49:46it delivered me true happiness.
00:49:52If St. Marie won't bring your brother to you,
00:49:56then perhaps
00:49:58it will bring you
00:50:01someone
00:50:03or something else.
00:50:06Be patient.
00:50:09Yeah, well,
00:50:11you know patience isn't my forte, right?
00:50:13I know.
00:50:16But what am I supposed to do in the meantime?
00:50:17Might I suggest
00:50:19you focus on solving that case?
00:50:22You have.
00:50:25You're missed here, you know?
00:50:27Good night, Inspector.
00:50:32Good night, Inspector.
00:50:35Good night, Inspector.
00:50:36Oh, my God.
00:51:06Blitzen. Why Blitzen?
00:51:11Officer Rose.
00:51:13Inspector.
00:51:14What's up?
00:51:16I wanted to come and say I'm sorry for spending all that money you don't have in your budget.
00:51:20So, uh, I wanted to pay it back.
00:51:27There's $322.86 in there, which I took from my savings.
00:51:33I mean, it's all my savings, but that's cool.
00:51:36And, uh, if you deduct $20 from my wages each month, you should be paid back in about two years, I reckon.
00:51:45Officer Rose.
00:51:49You got a good heart.
00:51:51Anyone ever tell you that?
00:51:52Well, my auntie.
00:51:54Like, all the time.
00:51:55You know?
00:51:56Take this.
00:52:00What I thought I...
00:52:01You don't have to pay anything back.
00:52:03We'll find it in the budget.
00:52:05And there's no need to apologize, all right?
00:52:09In fact, I should apologize for blazing at you like that.
00:52:12What you did was, um, was really good work.
00:52:15Anyway, come on.
00:52:19I've got a new lead.
00:52:20Let's go and wake D.S. Thomas up.
00:52:28He can't keep doing this.
00:52:29Happy Boxing Day, D.S. Thomas.
00:52:35Listen, um...
00:52:36I want to apologize for losing it and ruining Christmas.
00:52:44I'll make it up to you.
00:52:45I promise.
00:52:46And you were right about me taking it out on you because of Solomon.
00:52:55I just really wanted it.
00:52:57You know?
00:53:01I'm sorry, too.
00:53:04Good morning, Sarge.
00:53:06The inspector tell you the good news yet?
00:53:09He's only going to make a big breakthrough in the case,
00:53:12which is a big relief,
00:53:13because I was drawing a blank.
00:53:15You have tea?
00:53:16So I've been going through Darien St. George's phone records,
00:53:21and he phoned someone the day before he was murdered.
00:53:24A friend of his called Trishawn King.
00:53:27Now, he was over on Montserrat for Christmas.
00:53:30So I asked Darlene to speak with him.
00:53:32Darlene?
00:53:33Last night?
00:53:34Yeah.
00:53:34And how was she with that?
00:53:36Uh, you know, she was...
00:53:38She was cool with it.
00:53:40Inspector, it's Christmas Day.
00:53:43What in God's name do you think you're doing?
00:53:45Anyway, it turned out Darien feared for his life,
00:53:53and he was asking Trishawn where he can get hold of a gun for protection.
00:53:57He thought someone was going to kill him.
00:54:00Did he say who?
00:54:01But he did say he was caught up in something he shouldn't have, and get this.
00:54:06He thought the woman he was trying to help had been murdered.
00:54:08Now I'm caught up in it all.
00:54:10And now he was worried that he was going to suffer the same fate.
00:54:13Whoa, wait.
00:54:15Darien told Trishawn he thought Ashley Sims was murdered?
00:54:18But it would explain why no one's seen her the last few days.
00:54:21So then, if this is true, that means that whoever killed Ashley Sims
00:54:26probably also murdered Darien St. Jude's.
00:54:29To silence him.
00:54:30So what we need to start looking for now
00:54:32is anyone who had a reason to kill Ashley Sims.
00:54:35But both Helen and Neil Dugdale to start with,
00:54:38Ashley stole half a million pounds from their company.
00:54:41And there's someone else as well.
00:54:50We've been looking at your phone records.
00:54:52And these, Miss Hickson, are text messages from you to Ashley Sims
00:54:56just before she came out here.
00:54:58You'll regret ever meeting me.
00:55:00Stay away from my boyfriend or else I'm not afraid to hurt you.
00:55:06The list goes on.
00:55:08Care to explain?
00:55:10They had a thing, right?
00:55:13Gavin and Ashley had a thing behind my back.
00:55:16Or sort of.
00:55:18Sort of?
00:55:21Yeah, like, it wasn't, like, a real thing.
00:55:22Like, they never really got together, but...
00:55:24But he liked her.
00:55:27Yeah.
00:55:29God knows why.
00:55:30She was weird.
00:55:32But I think Gav liked that about her.
00:55:34And he called things off between us.
00:55:35And that's when I started warning her off.
00:55:41Guess I just got a bit carried away.
00:55:44I just...
00:55:45I just didn't want to lose him.
00:55:48And you didn't.
00:55:49Now that Ashley's conveniently disappeared,
00:55:52you've got Gavin to yourself now, haven't you?
00:55:54What?
00:55:56Is that what you think?
00:55:57That I killed her?
00:55:57Yeah.
00:55:57No, I wouldn't.
00:56:03I didn't.
00:56:05It'll be about Gavin.
00:56:07We need to tell him what we know.
00:56:09But Ashley called things off with Gav.
00:56:12Why would I kill her?
00:56:13Inspector?
00:56:15You need to hear the truth.
00:56:17What?
00:56:18And I'm afraid you're not going to get that from her.
00:56:20No disrespect, Karen.
00:56:21Neil, come on, man.
00:56:23What are you saying?
00:56:25Whatever she's told you,
00:56:26it's ten times worse.
00:56:27Neil, what are you saying?
00:56:28Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:56:29You've had your chance.
00:56:30Go on.
00:56:32He had a thing for Ashley.
00:56:34Is that it?
00:56:35We already know.
00:56:36No, it was more than that.
00:56:37Gavin was obsessed.
00:56:40When Ashley said they couldn't see each other anymore,
00:56:41he had to take time off work.
00:56:43And I've seen the posters you've been putting up.
00:56:44If Ashley's gone missing,
00:56:45then I'm telling you,
00:56:47it'll have something to do with Gavin.
00:56:50Inspector!
00:56:54Someone's just broken into the villa where Darion was shut.
00:57:24Mr. Bradbury,
00:57:41this doesn't look good at all.
00:57:46But then I don't think you need me to tell you that.
00:57:48You want to start by telling us
00:57:53what we're going to find in that pool you've just emptied?
00:57:56And we know it's not the gun used to kill Darion and St. Jules
00:57:59because that's currently sitting in a police station
00:58:01somewhere in Swindon.
00:58:02So what's down there?
00:58:03Why have you come back to the crime scene, Gavin?
00:58:05What's so important?
00:58:06Inspector!
00:58:07Found something.
00:58:10What is it?
00:58:11A bullet.
00:58:12One that's been fired.
00:58:13One that's been fired.
00:58:13Why is there a bullet in the pool, Gav?
00:58:22It's like...
00:58:23keepsake.
00:58:26Like...
00:58:26something to remember Ashley by.
00:58:32A bullet?
00:58:33There are other things that I've got of hers as well.
00:58:35Like...
00:58:36more like...like normal things.
00:58:40I'm really not interested in those, funny enough.
00:58:42Ashley, she's...
00:58:44she's not like anyone I've ever met before.
00:58:47Like, it was exciting being around her.
00:58:49And her life was so different to mine.
00:58:53Yeah, I hear that.
00:58:54The bullet.
00:58:55Yeah.
00:58:57She has a gun.
00:58:59She was looking after it
00:59:01as a favour for someone that she knew from prison.
00:59:03And she...
00:59:04Well...
00:59:05We...
00:59:06went out to the woods one day
00:59:08and she let me fire it.
00:59:09It was amazing, right?
00:59:11It was a...
00:59:11You know, like, exhilarating.
00:59:14And I went and got one of the bullets.
00:59:16You know, like I said,
00:59:16that I would keep it with me
00:59:17to remind me of her.
00:59:19And they say romance is dead.
00:59:22So, why did it end up in the pool?
00:59:25I panicked.
00:59:27When there was that dead guy
00:59:28and Neil called the police,
00:59:31I was worried that if you found it,
00:59:32you'd think it was me that shot him.
00:59:34So I took it out
00:59:35and I was wondering what to do
00:59:36and...
00:59:38I dropped it.
00:59:41It fell in the pool.
00:59:43And the more you were sniffing around,
00:59:45the more I started to worry that you'd find it.
00:59:46So I came back and I...
00:59:48So you loved Ashley then?
00:59:54Yeah, I guess, yeah.
00:59:57Must have really hurt when she ended things.
01:00:02Gavin,
01:00:02we believe Ashley Sims was murdered on this island
01:00:04in the last few days.
01:00:05What?
01:00:08No.
01:00:08What?
01:00:09She can't be...
01:00:09I'm kind of wondering if maybe you did it.
01:00:12Me?
01:00:14Why would I kill Ashley?
01:00:16Because you couldn't have her.
01:00:17And it hurt like hell.
01:00:18No, no, no, no.
01:00:19You've got this wrong.
01:00:20I didn't kill her.
01:00:21Like all that man.
01:00:24You seem a bit edgy, Gavin.
01:00:26Is there something you aren't telling us?
01:00:29There's nothing.
01:00:31Really, there is nothing.
01:00:35Paradise Cove Hotel, please.
01:00:47What is it that he's not saying?
01:00:55Hey, this is Ashley's phone.
01:00:57You know what to do.
01:00:58Ashley, it's me.
01:01:00We need to talk.
01:01:00I'm worried about you.
01:01:02The police have been asking questions
01:01:04and I think they know about us,
01:01:05so just let me know
01:01:08what you want me to do, yeah?
01:01:09Please call me back.
01:01:11I love you.
01:01:25You all right, sir?
01:01:26You seem a bit tense.
01:01:28I just can't work this one out.
01:01:31I mean, we've got one potential murder victim
01:01:33whose body we haven't found.
01:01:35Another murder victim whose body we have found,
01:01:38but that murder weapon was locked in a death drawer
01:01:40on the other side of the world
01:01:41when that murder took place.
01:01:43I mean, where do we even start?
01:01:44Well, sounds like you need to go get a little shoulder rub, you know?
01:01:48Release some of that tension.
01:01:50No, you all right, Officer Rose.
01:01:55This guy again.
01:01:57Listen, mate, I told you before,
01:01:59I'm not interested in upgrading to another phone,
01:02:01so stop calling me, yeah?
01:02:02Is that Mervyn Wilson?
01:02:05Yeah, it's still Mervyn Wilson,
01:02:07and I'm still not interested.
01:02:09It's me, Solomon, your brother.
01:02:17Are you there, Mervyn?
01:02:19Yes, yes, he's here.
01:02:26Don't hang up.
01:02:39Solomon, it's Mervyn.
01:02:43Yeah, if you already know that.
01:02:45Um, look, mate, I'm sorry.
01:02:48I just wasn't expecting your call.
01:02:50Yeah, I know.
01:02:52I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get in touch,
01:02:54but it was, you know.
01:02:57No, no, no, mate, I totally understand, yeah?
01:03:00I mean, it's a process, right?
01:03:03But, hey, you're calling now, aren't you?
01:03:06Yeah, man, it's a process.
01:03:08But I'm glad to be calling now.
01:03:14Are you still there?
01:03:15Mervyn?
01:03:18Yeah, yeah, I'm still here.
01:03:23Look, Solomon, I'm really, really sorry to do this to you,
01:03:28and I am so glad you called and that we're finally speaking.
01:03:32And I really, really want us to talk again,
01:03:35but right now, there's something I need to do, yeah?
01:03:41Yeah, man, no problem.
01:03:42Go tell you.
01:03:42That was quick.
01:03:46Officer Rhodes, that billboard, you did that, right?
01:03:50Yes, sir, I did.
01:03:52But you should already have the invoice for that.
01:03:54It's not going to cost any extra.
01:03:55No, no, no, no, I don't care about the cost.
01:03:56It was worth every penny.
01:03:57Come, come look.
01:03:58You see, all along, we've been looking at Ashley's footage on phone screens and laptops, yeah?
01:04:10Well, they were too small.
01:04:12I don't understand.
01:04:14You see where Ashley is?
01:04:16This is a steal from the video she made.
01:04:19And in the background, there's a ship passing by.
01:04:22Now, before, that was just a speck, but now you've blown it up.
01:04:26Look at it.
01:04:28What about the ship?
01:04:29Well, look at what it's called.
01:04:33Blitzen.
01:04:34Blitzen.
01:04:36Yeah?
01:04:37Now we know.
01:04:39Oh, Officer Rhodes, if you were so tall, I'd kiss you.
01:04:43Why would Darian write the name of that ship on his hands?
01:04:46Well, he obviously saw the footage himself, and then, um, he saw something in it.
01:04:52But what?
01:04:59Blitzen.
01:05:00It's like she's vanished into thin air.
01:05:01Why have come here?
01:05:03I thought I was helping someone.
01:05:05You know what?
01:05:06I think I'm starting to work out what went down here.
01:05:10But I need to make a phone call.
01:05:13And you need to get on to airport security.
01:05:15Come on.
01:05:16All right, mate.
01:05:19Much appreciated.
01:05:20Cheers.
01:05:22Wow.
01:05:24What?
01:05:24Wow.
01:05:27So, that ship behind Ashley Sims, it's owned by a Scandinavian container shipping company.
01:05:33Now, we know from the information on that footage, Ashley recorded it on the 4th of October, right?
01:05:38Right.
01:05:39Well, check this.
01:05:41The Blitzen was passing by the south coast of England on the 4th of October.
01:05:45Thousands of miles from the Caribbean.
01:05:47So, Ashley recorded that video on a beach back in the UK.
01:05:51Which means she was never even here.
01:05:54Inspector, the airport just emailed over security camera footage the day Ashley Sims arrived on the island.
01:06:00Wait, she was here?
01:06:04Thank you for a wonderful Christmas, Marjorie.
01:06:08Oh, it's been lovely.
01:06:09Let me give you a hand with that.
01:06:11Oh, don't be daft.
01:06:12You don't know where anything goes.
01:06:14Then you can tell me.
01:06:15It's the least I can do.
01:06:16Living room, sideboard drawer.
01:06:20Living room, sideboard drawer.
01:06:26But if Ashley Sims has never been here before, why do immigration records show that she has?
01:06:31Because someone else came pretending to be Ashley, presumably on a fake passport, and that someone paid Darian 100k to lie and say Ashley rented his property for the past few months.
01:06:41But why would they do that?
01:06:43To misdirect and confuse anyone looking for her.
01:06:46Because they'd already killed Ashley and taken the money.
01:06:49So one of our four suspects has been here three months previously?
01:06:52Which is why we're going through this footage, because it will show who was pretending to be Ashley Sims.
01:06:59There.
01:07:01Why didn't I see that before?
01:07:02Why I've come here.
01:07:03To try and understand why I hurt people.
01:07:06No, it was more than that.
01:07:07Gavin was obsessed.
01:07:09Of course.
01:07:10After that, nobody has seen leaving or arriving.
01:07:13So it's got to be one of these four who shot Darian St. Jules.
01:07:17You were in the hammock when whatever happened, happened.
01:07:20You didn't hear the gunshot.
01:07:21It's like Helen said, you know, the room out here, it's stronger than you used to.
01:07:25What if there was another smell the killer was trying to hide?
01:07:28It makes perfect sense now.
01:07:31For definite, there's no gun at the villa.
01:07:32The commissioner found the gun locked in the desk drawer at Dougdale's offices back in the UK.
01:07:37We need to call the commissioner.
01:07:39The commissioner?
01:07:40Why?
01:07:41Because he's with the killer as we speak.
01:07:51Come on, sir.
01:07:57Pick up.
01:08:01And what about these ones?
01:08:03St. Jules?
01:08:04I've always wanted to go to the Caribbean.
01:08:14I said the same drool.
01:08:32That necklace, the stone is lithmer, unique to St. Marie.
01:08:46You told me you always wanted to go to the Caribbean like you've never been.
01:08:51You were lying.
01:08:57No, no, Selwyn.
01:08:59It was you that went to St. Marie three months ago.
01:09:04If Ashley never went then, is she dead?
01:09:07Oh, I'm sorry.
01:09:11I didn't mean to.
01:09:12It just happened.
01:09:15Miss D'Owens.
01:09:18I think you should put the knife down, no.
01:09:23No.
01:09:28Please.
01:09:29That video she made, it wasn't in the Caribbean, was it?
01:09:42Bournemouth.
01:09:46On a Sunday, she'd gone to the seaside.
01:09:50She realized she'd made a mistake stealing that money, didn't she?
01:09:55Then she wanted to give the money back and send the video as an apology.
01:10:01I want to say sorry.
01:10:03I don't know why I keep doing this.
01:10:04Miss Simms didn't leave the country.
01:10:07I'd gone in to the office that day to deal with an order that had gone wrong.
01:10:14It wasn't my fault.
01:10:16But I was the one who had to go in and fix it.
01:10:19And then when I let myself in, I found Ashley there and I knew straight away what the money was.
01:10:27You overhear a lot when you sit at reception all day.
01:10:31I knew it was you.
01:10:33And I went to call the police.
01:10:35Wait, I'm giving the money back.
01:10:37Marjorie, don't.
01:10:39Please.
01:10:41I'm calling the police now.
01:10:43Don't do this to me.
01:10:44You're not.
01:10:45And Ashley tried to stop me.
01:10:47I won't let you, Marjorie.
01:10:49Get off me.
01:10:50Pushed her off me and...
01:10:52And I wasn't even supposed to be in that day.
01:11:10But it's like I told you, nobody, nobody cares for me there.
01:11:15They just take me for granted and...
01:11:18You saw the money and thought, finally, you could take something back for yourself.
01:11:27All you had to do was dispose of the body.
01:11:31Where?
01:11:41In my back garden.
01:11:42And then you made a fake passport in Ashley's name.
01:11:51Oh, that wasn't hard, you know, with all the kit we've got in the office.
01:11:55You flew on that passport to St. Marie to make it look as if Miss Sims had run away to the other side of the world and rented her property there for the last few months.
01:12:08You know, I really did want to go to the Caribbean.
01:12:14It's just that I never had the chance or the money until...
01:12:20And if you were going to misdirect from what really happened here in Swindon, where the dead body was, then the farther away the better.
01:12:32And no one would realize.
01:12:38Until things started to go wrong.
01:12:43And you received a phone call.
01:12:52You're saying Marjorie killed Ashley Sims?
01:12:55Our receptionist, that Marjorie?
01:12:57That Marjorie.
01:12:58Yes, Marjorie Dodds, the receptionist, killed Ashley Sims in England and made it look as if she ran away to the Caribbean with your 500k.
01:13:07Oh, I did not see that coming.
01:13:09So which one of us shot the man found in our swimming pool?
01:13:13It wasn't any of you.
01:13:15But it had to be. You said so. No one else was here.
01:13:18Yeah, you're right. I did say that.
01:13:20But what I didn't know then was that Darian St. Jules wasn't shot at your villa.
01:13:26It just looked like he was.
01:13:27That's why no gunshot was heard, because there wasn't one.
01:13:32He'd already been shot.
01:13:37We know now from our colleague in the UK that Marjorie had paid Darian money.
01:13:43She came to the island three months ago on a forged passport and she gave him £100,000
01:13:48to lie and cover if anyone ever came to the island asking after Ashley.
01:13:53She'd convinced him he was doing a favour for a very vulnerable friend of hers.
01:13:59But when you visited him a few days ago, Mrs. Dogdale, asking questions, mentioning the missing £500,000,
01:14:05Darian started to wonder what he'd gotten himself involved in.
01:14:09And when he re-watched that footage more closely, the footage of Ashley you'd shown him,
01:14:14as an experienced fisherman who knew the waters of St. Marie very well,
01:14:18something about it bothered him.
01:14:20Zooming in, he was able to read the name of the boat, Blitzen.
01:14:24He knew this was not a St. Marie vessel.
01:14:28He worked out that the video of Ashley was actually shot in the UK.
01:14:34And having heard from you, Mrs. Dogdale, that Ashley went missing with £500,000 of your money,
01:14:40Darian started to realise that Ashley had never been to the island.
01:14:43He'd only ever met Marjorie, so he phoned Ms. Dodds, asking what was going on.
01:14:54We need to talk.
01:14:56Listen, Darian, you've got this all wrong.
01:15:00All throughout this case, we thought Darian's killer had to be one of you four.
01:15:05The one person we never suspected was Marjorie Dodds.
01:15:09It was all the way back in Swindon.
01:15:11Or so we thought.
01:15:12With Darian threatening to go to the police, Marjorie asked him to hang fire.
01:15:17And she would fly out here and speak to him in person.
01:15:21Marjorie was here?
01:15:22On this island?
01:15:23At the exact same time we were?
01:15:24Yeah.
01:15:24She arrived the night before Darian was shot and flew back to the UK the next morning.
01:15:30Unable to convince Darian to keep quiet and carry on with the lie,
01:15:34Marjorie started to grow desperate.
01:15:36Worried he'd tell the police.
01:15:38I can give you more money.
01:15:39How much?
01:15:40Just tell me and I'll give it to you.
01:15:42We know Darian was searching around for a gun for self-protection.
01:15:47He never expected Marjorie would use it against him.
01:15:59What are you doing?
01:16:00Put the gun down!
01:16:01After shooting Darian, Marjorie left and headed for the airport.
01:16:10Before getting back on the plane, arriving at Dugdale's offices just in time to meet with our very own Commissioner Patterson.
01:16:16Well, if Marjorie shot Darian at his house, how did he end up at our villa?
01:16:22Marjorie thought she'd killed him.
01:16:24But what she didn't know when she left Darian's place was that he was still alive.
01:16:28It was the fact that he smelled so strongly of someone else's aftershave, they helped us work it out.
01:16:37Neil's aftershave, in fact.
01:16:39We thought it was there to cover up another smell that we now know was antiseptic.
01:16:45The stuff he used to clean up a wound?
01:16:48Because as soon as Marjorie quit the scene, Darian regained consciousness and patched himself up.
01:16:54As far as he was concerned, the bullet was just lodged in his shoulder.
01:16:57It wasn't life-threatening.
01:16:59So he put on a fresh T-shirt and headed off for the hospital to get it properly seen to.
01:17:03But on the way, it passed your villa, which was just half a mile down the road.
01:17:09And I think Darian intended to alert you to what had gone down.
01:17:13He stopped here to tell you the truth about Ashley and to warn you about what Marjorie had done.
01:17:19That's why he came here that morning.
01:17:21To tell you what your colleague had done to Ashley and in turn to him.
01:17:25To make sure it didn't happen to anyone else.
01:17:29But what Darian didn't know was that his wound was worse than he thought.
01:17:33And he was bleeding internally.
01:17:36And so despite his brave effort to alert you all to the truth, he died here in your villa.
01:17:44But then someone proceeded to stage the scene as if he was shot in this villa.
01:17:52Didn't you, Mr. Bradbury?
01:17:56Me? What?
01:17:57We don't know. Of course not. No.
01:18:00And you did it because Ashley told you to.
01:18:02You're crazy.
01:18:04Ashley, I don't know what you're talking about.
01:18:08Let me have your phone.
01:18:13Gavin, please.
01:18:17It's okay.
01:18:20Unlock it.
01:18:20Bingo.
01:18:36Text messages seemingly from Ashley Sims from the moment she disappeared right up to today.
01:18:40But all of these were sent by Marjorie Dodds.
01:18:47Who kept Ashley's phone after she killed her.
01:18:49No, you know, you're wrong.
01:18:51You've been texting her?
01:18:52No.
01:18:52This whole time?
01:18:53Karen, I'm sorry.
01:18:54Look, look.
01:18:55No, no.
01:18:55Karen!
01:18:58And here.
01:18:59Proof of what happened.
01:19:00Messages exchanged on the morning of Darian's death.
01:19:02Because despite what you told us, Gavin, you were actually the first to discover Darian's body.
01:19:10You knew who Darian was because Ashley had told you all about him.
01:19:15And so you contacted Ashley.
01:19:17Left a message telling her that Darian had turned up to the villa and died.
01:19:21And asking her what was going on.
01:19:23A few minutes later, she, or rather, Marjorie, texted back.
01:19:30See, Marjorie realized that if the police were called and found Darian with his wound patched up,
01:19:36they'd know he was shot somewhere else.
01:19:38And the trail would lead right back to her.
01:19:41So, she had to do two things.
01:19:44First, she texted you with instructions.
01:19:46Second, she had to clear up the real scene of the crime.
01:19:49Marjorie's confessed to her colleague in the UK that she quickly doubled back from the airport
01:19:53and returned to Darian's house before disposing of the gun and the t-shirt he was wearing when she shot him.
01:19:58Meanwhile, you moved the body outside to the swimming pool.
01:20:01There's also a mention here of that bullet you kept as a memento in the text messages you sent to Ashley.
01:20:07Well, that's how Marjorie knew.
01:20:09So, as Ashley, she asked you to remove the bullet she killed Darian with and replace it with the one she knew you had.
01:20:16However, in your haste, you must have dropped the bullet you extracted into the swimming pool.
01:20:25But you knew you could come back and retrieve it later.
01:20:28Once you switched the bullets, the hard bit was over.
01:20:32You disposed of the dressing.
01:20:36Then made a hole in his t-shirt and let the blood around the wound soak in.
01:20:41So now, it looked like Darian had been shot after he entered the villa, not before.
01:20:47The last problem you had was getting rid of that antiseptic smell.
01:20:51Because that stuff lingers, right?
01:20:53And if the police noticed it, we'd certainly be asking who cleaned up the wound and why.
01:20:58So you ran into the bathroom and got hold of some aftershave, nails, and doused him in it.
01:21:03So now all you had to do was pretend to be asleep when Mrs. Dogdale discovered the body.
01:21:09Gavin, we need to get to the airport. You've got to pack.
01:21:13Leaving us without a scooby, as to how a man was shot with a gun that was locked in a desk drawer 5,000 miles away in a Swindon warehouse.
01:21:21In the end, it wasn't just the police that Marjorie Dodds had duped.
01:21:26It was you as well, Gavin.
01:21:27You see, you thought you were helping the woman you loved.
01:21:30A woman you'd do anything for when you were actually helping her killer.
01:21:42Officer Rose.
01:21:51I need to know, why did you come to the train station that night and invite me into your home?
01:22:12Why take that risk?
01:22:15Because I didn't want to spend Christmas on my own again.
01:22:19I'm so sorry I spoiled it all.
01:22:39Inspector?
01:22:41Commissioner?
01:22:42The arrest has been made. I'm pleased to see.
01:22:45Same here. We couldn't have done it without you, sir.
01:22:49Oh, and are you doing all right?
01:22:51Yes, of course. I'm fine.
01:22:55Merry Christmas, sir.
01:23:02I'm doing fine.
01:23:06We regret to announce that the 10-15 to Leeds will be delayed due to a shortage of train staff.
01:23:15Chief Commissioner, it's Selwyn Patterson.
01:23:25And to you, and apologies for calling you during the holidays.
01:23:32But I wanted to know if you'd found my replacement as yet.
01:23:39And I wondered if there was any chance of my returning to the road, if it's still vacant.
01:23:57I know it's been a long time since I've been searching, since I've been searching to find you.
01:24:10The thing is, Harry, the classic Christmas day, Sunday roast lunch is all well and good.
01:24:16But when push comes to shove, the real culinary high point is the turkey and stuffing sarni.
01:24:24Because my friend, in my humble opinion, it is one of the greatest delicacies known to mankind.
01:24:31Like bacon and eggs?
01:24:35Oh, DS Thomas, you're just in time. Come in, come in.
01:24:40Grab those for me, would you?
01:24:45So, what is this about, sir?
01:24:49I promised I'd make up for spoiling Christmas day.
01:24:52And that is exactly what I'm doing.
01:24:54Come on.
01:24:54I don't know why I didn't think of this before.
01:25:01My front room on the beach.
01:25:03Is that a good idea, do you think?
01:25:06Yeah, why not?
01:25:07So, we're watching something.
01:25:08We certainly are, DS Thomas.
01:25:10Not the...
01:25:11The great escape. Yeah.
01:25:16Beers and butties, everyone.
01:25:18And thank you to our local mayor for letting me have the leftovers from the bar.
01:25:23And you've put it all between two slices of bread?
01:25:27Yeah.
01:25:28How English.
01:25:31Excited for this film, Inspector. Sounds dope.
01:25:34Um, sir.
01:25:39Is this really your favourite thing about Christmas?
01:25:42Well, yeah.
01:25:44When I was a little boy, growing up,
01:25:47most times I didn't know where I was going to end up spending Christmas, right?
01:25:51With a foster family or in a care home.
01:25:56But, wherever I ended up,
01:25:59the one constant every Christmas was this film.
01:26:03And it was a comfort to me.
01:26:06I bet that little boy never thought he'd be here in the Caribbean.
01:26:11All these years later,
01:26:14watching that same film,
01:26:17surrounded by his friends.
01:26:24He certainly didn't care for him.
01:26:27So, um...
01:26:29To him.
01:26:31To him.
01:26:33Hmm.
01:26:34Okay, then.
01:26:37Showtime.
01:26:37Yeah.
01:26:47Um...
01:26:48Look, uh,
01:26:49just give me a few minutes, yeah?
01:26:52Yeah?
01:26:52Solomon, how you doing, man?
01:27:02You got my message, yeah?
01:27:04Um, look.
01:27:07I'm sorry I had to cut you off like that before, yeah?
01:27:10It was just an emergency at work I had to deal with.
01:27:13So,
01:27:14how's your Christmas been?
01:27:17Yeah?
01:27:19Good.
01:27:19Mine, um...
01:27:23Yeah, yeah, it's been really good.
01:27:29Look, um...
01:27:31I don't know how you feel about this, but...
01:27:35I was wondering if you wanted to meet up sometime.
01:27:40Yeah?
01:27:44Yeah, I definitely would like to.
