00:00Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Evening, it may be Christmas week, but the Premier League doesn't stop.
00:46Two games for you on tonight's Match of the Day,
00:49as well as all the goals from the festive period.
00:52Just like myself, Joe Hart and Danny Murphy,
00:54I have no idea what day it is.
00:56We begin with Sunderland against Leeds,
00:58the first time these two have met in the Premier League since Boxing Day 2002.
01:04Steve Bowers at the Stadium of Light.
01:09The managers that day, 23 years ago, were Howard Wilkinson and Terry Venables.
01:14Both clubs now are more than on course to ensure this fixture happens again next season.
01:20Sunderland have only one of two unbeaten home records left intact.
01:24They play their second match without their six players away at AFCON,
01:28and they've suffered a further blow today with an injury to Dan Ballard.
01:32So there's a Premier League debut for Dennis Serkin in a reshuffled back four.
01:37Brian Broby has two goals in his last three games here.
01:41Leeds have just four points away from Mellon Road so far,
01:45but their switch to a back three has changed their fortunes dramatically.
01:49They're unchanged from the side that beat Crystal Palace 4-1.
01:53Dominic Calvert-Lewin aims to score for the sixth successive Premier League match.
01:58Prior to kick-off, Captain Granit Xhaka carries a Sunderland shirt in honour of club director Patrick Truer,
02:08who passed away on Christmas Day.
02:11And there will be a moment of remembrance prior to kick-off.
02:14Brian Broby has been cleared tonight to noch 78 seconds prior to kick-off.
02:39Bolden under good pressure.
02:46And there he goes to press.
02:51So too did Brian Brobick.
02:56And Roden has stayed down after that challenge from the Dutchman.
03:04More the way his right ankle went over.
03:11And he felt it straight away.
03:14Which is right after he's played the ball there.
03:23Goodness.
03:25And Ampadu initially with the poor touch.
03:36Still recovered.
03:37The foul by Le Fay.
03:40Sutherland's turn to have everybody back.
03:44Floated in by Stack.
03:46Olderate beaten in the air.
03:48Still haven't got this clear.
03:50That was Ampadu in towards Calvert-Lewin.
03:53Okafor.
03:54Reflected on the way through.
04:00That was an uncomfortable one for Sutherland.
04:02This ball was bouncing and bobbling around.
04:06And eventually Okafor's effort hit Mukweeli.
04:11And Odingra with the closing down and Roden's in more pain.
04:26And I think it's the same right ankle from the previous challenge earlier on.
04:32And the look of concern on Daniel Farker's face says it all.
04:37It is.
04:41He's rolled it again.
04:51Midingo.
04:57Saka.
05:02And the way.
05:10As he pushed off then, he winced with pain.
05:18Rukiely's throw.
05:20Come up at Nguyen jumping.
05:23Saka.
05:24Lovely ball.
05:25A dingra!
05:26Lift-off for the stadium of light.
05:33Simona dingra's first Sunderland goal.
05:36And the team with the unbeaten home league record are in front.
05:48And no surprise that this was all created by Granit Xhaka.
05:53Awareness, pace of pass.
05:57And then a dingra opened his body and did the rest.
06:01First touch controlled it.
06:04And a beautiful second one finished it.
06:07And the man overlooked by the Ivory Coast, which is why he's still here in the Premier League.
06:14Has his moment.
06:16And his team have the lead 29 minutes in.
06:21And Joe Roden's day, understandably, is done.
06:36To lead six defeats in their eight away games.
06:40One down in this one.
06:41Bion.
06:47Calvert-Lewins touches an excellent one.
06:50Aronson!
06:51What a save!
06:55I think it was the defender behind the goalkeeper that cleared that.
07:00And it stopped a certain goal.
07:02But let's have a look at this, because the American must have thought he'd equalized.
07:07Trey Hume it is who gets back.
07:11Brilliant defender.
07:12To prevent it being 1-1.
07:15And he couldn't believe it.
07:19Alderete.
07:23Comfortable for Biol.
07:27That's a touch on Laferne.
07:29And the ring trying to set Broby away.
07:30Goalkeeper hesitated.
07:33Broby's effort cleared in the end by Biol.
07:38The big question is whether there was any connection
07:41between Pires the goalkeeper and Broby the striker.
07:45It looked minimal on first viewing.
07:49Certainly the interpretation of Tony Harrington the referee.
07:58And here goes Odingran, look at the room he's got to run into.
08:03Broby's pulling away!
08:04And he knows he should have done better.
08:10Leeds were wide open here.
08:14Oh.
08:16That's a let-off for Leeds.
08:18Brian Broby with two goals in his last three games at the Stadium of Light.
08:22Off the crossbar when it should have been under it.
08:24And this has been checked and cleared.
08:26And you would say correctly so.
08:27And this has been checked and cleared.
08:30And you would say correctly so.
08:38And to do for Leeds.
08:39Go, Dale, go!
08:40Go, Dale!
08:41Go, Dale!
08:42Go, Dale, go!
08:47So compressing.
08:49Leeds did that well though.
08:55Stack.
08:57Superball from him and to Aronson.
08:59out to Aaronson
09:02numbers forward here Leeds, Aaronson, Calvert-Lewin!
09:08it's taken them less than two minutes of the second half and who else but Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Leeds
09:18he scores for the sixth league game in a row and the first player for Leeds United to do that in
09:26the top flight for 65 years and it all came from that move from the back and watch the movement of
09:35Calvert-Lewin here in between the two defenders beautifully found by Aaronson it's a fabulous
09:42team goal and Calvert-Lewin's incredible streak in front of goal continues six in a row seven
09:51goals in that time and he's got Leeds back to 1-1
09:58just the second touch of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the Sunderland penalty area
10:02you won't worry about that it's ended up
10:07Okafor
10:10flicked on by Aaronson over Calvert-Lewin in came Bogle
10:13it wouldn't quite fall for him he almost trusted that goal with Jadon Bogle
10:21who's never ever scored a premier league goal look at this it wouldn't quite sit down
10:27and he couldn't believe that that wasn't on target
10:30Leeds make their domination count here with another goal
10:39it goes Goodman Cern
10:42and Perdue
10:46his effort blocked by Serkin
10:48and it is a point apiece Sunderland's unbeaten home record is still intact
10:56Leeds extend their unbeaten run to five games Sunderland won Leeds won
11:05I'm a bit in between if I'm honest because we were by far the better team have dominated each
11:11every statistic and should have probably won this with game missing a bit the clinical edge in
11:17in their box and for that yes definitely good point can't complain too much again great mentality to
11:23to come back but could have been could have been three and for that I'm not dancing on the table
11:29tonight yeah tough game and as expected because we knew before that these were a good side in good
11:35form and they are still in good form so they showed the great quality on the pitch today we started well
11:40I think we scored even at the end of the first half we had the opportunity to score the second goal
11:45I think it was a key moment because after that I think the when they changed their structure we
11:51struggled a bit to find our references for the build-up for the high press so they were dominant
11:55at that time we found the energy to switch the momentum sometimes even at the end of the game
11:59we had the opportunity to to be a bit more dangerous but I think it's a fair result at the end
12:05what about the goal what a team goal every single outfield player touched the ball in fact no
12:09every single player touched the ball because it started with the goalkeeper
12:12yeah I think we've shown that we can mix our game up um over the past few weeks you know we
12:16can be direct we can play football which is good versatility within the team so a good goal scored
12:24six in a row you've scored in now the last leeds player to do that in the top flight 65 years ago
12:29I mean how good a feeling is that yeah it's always a good feeling to just be scoring regularly you know
12:34um I'm in a good moment at the minute you know my timing's good and and I think as a team we're
12:40we're gelling a bit more and and things are going well for us both teams scored good goals let's
12:45start with the Sunderland one which had an element of Joe Rodon's injury playing into it though yeah
12:51he took a few good hits the first kind of 20 or 20 or so minutes but Joe Rodon he's such an he's such
12:57a warrior you know he's not missed a game for two years he's got a great mentality exactly what you want
13:02from your center half you want him playing no matter what goes on in the game and that was really tested for
13:08him in the first half you see on the front foot Sunderland looking to set the tone making the
13:13stadium a light an awful place to play unfortunate but he really gets hit hard there Robbie doing his
13:18job a dinger again closing down wins the ball but look Joe Rodon takes a really good hit there and you
13:24can see he's in a real lot of pain on the same ankle to get that hit twice in a row that's when you
13:29think to yourself you come off and you're chatting with your physios can you play on yes i can just give
13:33me a minute this is two minutes after coming back on doesn't really challenge for the first one
13:38but this from granite shaka beautiful pass into a dingra and look of course Joe Rodon doesn't quite
13:44get with his team he's the one playing him on side beautiful touch and he can't get quite get out to
13:49him if he's fully fit does he get to that i don't know but look i've got to celebrate this goal this is
13:54an absolute bit of genius shaka beautiful reverse pass disguise on it this touch a dingra sets it makes it
14:02unsavable outside the post curling back in brilliant goal and that was the tempo that
14:07sunderland set in the first half i think it's worth saying as well with rodent as a manager
14:13and as a teammate of his you want that attitude somebody's desperate to stay on the pitch like
14:19you said to try and play through because hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it oh well maybe but you
14:25are right i suppose everybody wants somebody try and play through it they'll get more benefits from that
14:30yeah throughout a season and they will get hurt yeah if you've got if you've got a group of players
14:35with that same mindset you've got a good group the other thing that that injury did was it deprived
14:40leads of one-third of their back three which has been really successful for them over recent weeks
14:47daniel fucker deserves great credit for the decision he made he changed the system when the substitute
14:52happened from a three five two to a four three three and it completely changed the momentum of the game
14:57in leeds his favor it's a system that didn't work initially at some stages early in the season and
15:02he's had a lot of credit for getting a strike partner like the calvert-lewin but this was exactly
15:06the right time to do it against the way sunderland set up they kind of matched up here you can see the
15:11run from harrison he joins calvert-lewin he's playing to the right of him okafor to the left
15:16and sunderland back four were now occupied completely occupied and they should have equalized with this
15:21chance and then the attacks just came time and time again it okafor actually seemed to enjoy it
15:27more on the left he got more of the ball he could see the pictures ahead of him he's running at people
15:31which he's good at he had runners off him and all of a sudden leads were in control they look like
15:36their home team i know some of them got players missing except it's unfair enough but there's there's
15:40the system change there's the four three three and as you can see the front three there occupying that
15:44back four stopping sunderland's full backs having plenty of the ball which they did before this
15:49i think arison aronson there arison if he goes a bit ahead of the fullback he gets himself in
15:54aronson again in that inside right position in between the center half and fullback chance at
16:00the back post rocafor if he anticipates the uh the cross second half more of the same wonderful goal
16:06brilliant move good passing crisp stack as well what what performance he had as well playing in the
16:12middle of the pitch and we talked about final product or end product final pass i should say that was a
16:19brilliant ball and a great finish from calvert low and the cavalier is on fire at the moment
16:23and then just after that they had the best chance to go and win it when the ball comes in you can see
16:29the full backs are occupied by the wide men the two forwards either side so bogle gets in tries to
16:35stomach it into the back of the net but credit to that man because he's he's had his doubters in the
16:40past and even been talked about lack of tactical awareness today bang on and these numbers represent the
16:46change that's a real dominance against a team who are who are good at home just the thing on that
16:51front three is the key to it then that even if one of them is wide the other one is close to calvert
16:56lewin yeah they both played close to him sometimes i think when you play a 4-3-3 if they stay really
17:01wide the forward gets isolated but what it did with the fullbacks of sunderland coming in with the danger
17:07it also allowed the pullbacks to bomb on it was it was perfect timing to do it and a brave decision from
17:12him daniel farker says he isn't going to be dancing on the tables although i think if my team had scored
17:17a goal like this i'd be on that table and you've never danced on a table it was a long time ago
17:24a long time ago joe all serious no this this is a brilliant goal and this is a team that's
17:30absolutely brimming with confidence good turnover one nil down no panic looking to build into the second
17:37half obviously had that tactical rejig that that danny's touched on but at no point are they forcing
17:42anything making angles for the goalkeeper they all look comfortable in possession pass here into
17:47occafort a little bit of spice on it and then stack this ball here brilliant that's every player apart
17:53from calvert lewin's touched it now aronson attacking calvert lewin getting into the area where he's been
17:58so good this season finishes it with a plum absolutely brilliant team goal and that's a team brimming with
18:03confidence and we will all have seen i am sure that the the graphic that has done the rounds this week of
18:11dominic calvert lewin this season only being able to score in a straight line that's where all his
18:16goals have come from the one today is that one that's just on the right of that straight line
18:22but we also had a look at where he scored his goals in his most successful season at everton and
18:26whilst it isn't a straight line danny it is still with the exception of two two and a half
18:32all within the frame of the goal yeah it's intelligent runs knowing where to be anticipating
18:38the crosses but simple simple messaging isn't it for any young forwards out there stay central
18:45don't go wandering when you're not in the game stay in that position and also the other thing i think is
18:49important as well is that the team you're playing in knows knows your strengths where you want the ball
18:54the ball goes in early from leeds doesn't it yeah exactly and i think it's a dream for a wide man you
18:59know you can just beat your man and get it and you've got someone who's looking dominant looking
19:02dangerous in the middle and that threat's always there just what because we've done a lot of
19:06praising of of of leads here maybe understandably so just one on sunderland because they are depleted
19:12by afcon they've got six players away they didn't have ballard today either who's been integral this
19:17season for them and they've still come away with a point they are going to have to dig in at times
19:22through this period aren't they they're still unbeaten they can be very proud of that performance they had
19:26players today who haven't played many minutes um adingra was a threat the whole way through
19:31and they've got a really good squad they they've got players who are match winners zaka's still
19:36leading leading the team that they had moments in the game but what they've done this season and what
19:41they continue to do is a breath of fresh air really yeah all right spurs have only won once in the league
19:47in the last two months they traveled to a crystal palace side who did the double over them last season
19:51jonathan pierce was there those two palace wins last season for as many as they'd achieved in the
19:58previous 22 meetings both of these needing to end their end of year slumps palace thumped at leeds and
20:04then dumped out of the league cup on penalties at arsenal spurs with two league defeats in a row and
20:09just 36 points in 2025 one of the glasner makes four changes to the side beaten at arsenal dean henderson
20:16of course returns in goal maintaining his league ever present record klein replaces comfort right wing
20:22back livenny is preferred to in ketia and with richards injured hughes comes into midfield and lerma slots
20:28back into defense top them are forced into their two changes with romero and summons both sent up against
20:34liverpool danzo and richardson start for them
20:43poro and get it over the top for the run of bergbao springs back to kudis bergbao
20:52goodness with the rum
20:53for uh good work by top and richardson against trying to play top them lead with a very good goal
21:04they've hardly had a kick of the ball and with 16 minutes gone richardson puts them ahead
21:13just see if bergbao's on or offside there i think he looks offside in the build-up it's going to be
21:19checked comes out to him from kudos gives him the return poro comes into the line it's a lovely cross in
21:27richardson might be offside
21:32well taken goal naked eye shows to me that bergbao's offside it is being checked now
21:37goal is ruled out there's a lovely move by tottenham but it won't count and it would have been harsh on
21:50crystal palace
21:55mateta real handful for dancer and he's got away from him and into divani there's a little spin he was hoping
22:03for contact from a spurs player lerma to water cool under pressure mateta goes for goal through the
22:10legs of the defender and why what a clever effort this really is up for it today john-philippe mateta
22:19thomas frank already under pressure three wins in 12 in all
22:26crystal palace drummers behind the goal to your left hand side
22:30uh beating out a frantic tattoo at the moment
22:35well colon moane is holding his face spencer's got involved
22:39hughes wanted to get on with the game i think there was an accidental bash in the face there for
22:47colon moane as he falls he just gets knocked in the face with the side of will hughes near as he comes in
22:55to try and get the ball back off him bit of something and nothing there will be pinot
23:01now it goes to wharton what's dangerous he's headed back across goal and it's a chance for mateta really
23:10that he should have buried a lovely header back across goal by maxence lacroix
23:15looks for mateta couldn't get over the ball and this is what crystal palace fans will tell you
23:23they've been creating chances for weeks and weeks but they haven't been taking them
23:28bergfao
23:29gonna moane getting away from lerma okay he's there with him good intervention
23:34gay top to appeal him that he hit his hand big claim we are having a look
23:43the ball did strike an arm but it's a supporting arm supporting his body as it
23:47fell according to the bar james bell correct decision i think most people would agree
23:54and porra with the corner kick i think it's tottenham's first of the game
23:56and this time shorty the goal will count and tottenham will lead
24:09crystal palace undone at a set piece where their defending was scruffy at best
24:16and for archie gray it's a first tottenham goal lots of defenders back in there but they can't deal
24:22with it the header down wasn't dealt with richard has nodded it on and gray with a simple glance
24:29the three palace defenders there that could have dealt with that far better than they did
24:34and gray flicked it on and tottenham hearts for lead
24:38but crystal palace will feel hard done by they've bossed the game
24:43if tottenham hold on and get the win here it will buck a trend really because
24:47when they faced opponents started the day above them in the table they've only won one of their last
24:5119 london derby's way from home because the palace were above them in the table this morning
24:58pino takes it back from mitchell spins across it it's a good setter
25:04divini over the bar big chance really big chance for the youngster
25:12lovely work down the left-hand side pino and mitchell the cross was abused spun in clever
25:18headed down by klein de benny first touch took it away from goal so he had to spin and then over it went
25:29one or two tottenham players are looking tired pino couldn't get there
25:35a little more take it long
25:50up in the air by spence miteta oh she pushed there by richarlison is there enough contact to worry the
25:57referee or the var
26:03bit of pushing and shoving going in there mateta and spence
26:08in comes the resulting corner lerma's headed back across
26:13good touch from pino sensible ball wide wharton
26:17better cross in second time of asking it's come up to lerma clever header just one
26:21big chance fell to max lance lacroix
26:28it's been another game in which crystal palace have created opportunities and haven't taken them
26:34there he's downward header only carries to gray on the run
26:44now to kuda spins the cross in far powers richarlison is there and tottenham lead 2-0
26:50in terms of possession they've been second best in terms of chances created
26:57they've been second best but they lead 2-0 and it's all about goals
27:05richarlison oh is he on or is he off
27:11this one is being checked for offside from there he looks offside to me
27:15and is richarlison gonna have a second one ruled out will it be a lifeline for crystal palace
27:29richarlison offside when he's gone again it will not count
27:35i can't believe his fortune well they didn't time it with perfection as they should have done
27:45this season have been cursed by conceding goals at set pieces and by conceding late goals
28:03wharton in it comes over by gay and it would have counted that's a massive chance goodness me they've had
28:11some amounts to be a free header really from there just checked his watch it's a victory that would
28:19take spurs up to 11th maybe on 25 points which will be a couple of points above the number they had
28:30after 18 games last season here come tottenham on a bear richarlison back to him can he wrap it up here
28:37on a bear with a shot off the post and that would have done it good crisp drive because it was at an
28:43awkward height for him and off the woodwork tottenham close to a second
28:47what a bear gets beyond essay takes the return low crossing fishes all the way through poro in space
29:05back it comes spentankar could say and away by lerma
29:10too much space here for poro really from a palace point of view and henderson that's a fine save because
29:19i think he saw it late from behind players and tottenham win it a welcome victory for thomas frank
29:27but for crystal palace now it's their worst run of league defeats in a row under oliver glasner
29:34and their season is beginning to look in danger of being undermined uh shot them win this by a goal
29:43to nil first ever senior go how does that feel yeah it's incredible um after i can't even remember
29:50how many appearances i'm on now but after 112 112 i mean i'll give myself a little bit of a little bit
29:57of leeway because i've been playing center back and left back but to be fair i should have got a goal before
30:00this so yeah it's just an incredible feeling to get it so yeah you have been under pressure the team's
30:05been under pressure but they did fight and they did battle for you they fight for each other they fight
30:09to the club they fight for staff they fight for me they fight for everyone uh the fans most importantly
30:14i like the character and the mentality in the team today that so much we need to improve but i like that
30:19discipline we had because you need to have that uh in the premier league there'll be difficult games
30:24especially away from home very disappointing result and uh but it's a little bit like many games this
30:32year that if if you don't score you can't win and it's not that we don't create the chances we just
30:37miss them right now and and then here we get punished with a set play and that's a little bit the story
30:42that happens uh more or less every game i see the effort but um to be honest the finishing quality was not
30:49there today well it was a good afternoon for archie gray as he gets his uh first senior goal uh for
30:58spurs there great but great feeling for him best feeling i would never know uh but it was it wasn't
31:05a go oh you actually um it wasn't a great game was it um but as thomas frank said maybe the quality
31:13can improve but they had a bit of something today no it really wasn't a great game and it wasn't necessarily
31:18a top performance you know they were lacking a little bit of identity you find with spurs but
31:22when you're lacking identity and you want people to just roll their sleeves up and play for you
31:26that's where people like richarlison come to the fore now look there's no doubt about it
31:31if zelanke's fit he's leading the line but this season he's just been a pest hasn't he and he's got
31:36good numbers he's a real threat when he gets in he makes it difficult lerma filling in this afternoon
31:41for richards he's just pulling onto him and what if it's not for bergfeld just being slightly offside
31:46they can get themselves off to a really good start here his movement's good he's alive he's
31:51just ready off the back caught them sleeping and not ideally they go on they're up there but
31:57here i know what he's trying to do as a goalkeeper he wants henderson to slide at him that's how he is
32:01that's his sort of mentality he wants to win those sort free kicks but look tough game scrappy he's
32:06really strong there flicks it on for archie gray and he gets his big moment now look palace absolutely
32:12battered them possession wise they had lots of chances but if tottenham were going to wrap this
32:16game up he was going to be involved in it just can't quite hold his run here an excellent ball from
32:21pulis but like i say towards the end of the game tottenham are just hanging on look at that kick from
32:26vicario but his awareness as lacroix comes into him here this is really really good play sharp
32:31odebert little one two it's not conventional but at the end of the day you've got to try and win
32:37yourself the game it's a lovely pull into his stride and an unlucky effort but here we just see
32:43a beautiful flip around the corner of brennan johnson like i say if tottenham were going to wrap
32:46this game up and make it a little bit more comfortable he was going to be involved in it
32:50and that's archie gray saying thanks for the assist and and that's the difference for him this season and
32:55how much that thomas frank has used him compared to last is it a case of digging in for them
33:02this season is that what thomas frank was saying well i think for now the next few weeks they've
33:07been they've had such extremities of performances some really good ones some awful ones when you're
33:12not playing well as joe said the the fans all they want to see is you fight for everything even even
33:19the defeat against liverpool yeah with a with a man down they showed character they showed some guts
33:24and the fans walk away going okay somewhere to work which was actually the big criticism of the arse
33:29game was that and chelsea and they're just kind of sat there and waited to be beaten was the
33:33criticism yeah but tottenham with the quality they've got they need to be more composed uh more
33:40creative more on the front foot the you can't play like that every week palace had 62 percent
33:45possession and dominated them for large parts of the game and uh deserve some credit too even though
33:49they lost yeah and you're going to look at that because as joe says they sort of battered them in
33:54in every way bar actually scoring yeah they they were completely in control for long periods because
34:01they played really good football they controlled the midfield areas it was just lacking in the final
34:07third which when they look at these highlights post video tomorrow whenever it is they'll feel a bit
34:13better about themselves because if you keep getting in these good positions you're gonna you're gonna score
34:18goals mateta we know is more reliable than that normally he's just having a little spell
34:22this from deveny is a a chance really should be ready and should be taken i know they're missing sar
34:28who's at afcon who's a big player for them and they kept probing they kept getting in the right areas
34:33and that that you know we've seen palace this season have really good spells and they're just going
34:38through a little bit of a bad one at the minute and it's only because when they're getting in the final
34:42third they're not playing with this they're not got the same killer instinct the same conviction
34:48this is a wonderful chance from lacroix it's got to be scoring that really and they did deserve
34:52something out of the game you've got to be honest about it gay who scored the winner at full and from
34:55a very similar position there gets a chance late in the game i know he's frustrated i know he's angry
35:00and their their squad at the moment is thin you know he hasn't got the bench was inexperienced he
35:06hasn't got an abundance of options so they'll they'll get through this stuff they're in a slight it's just a
35:11slightly strange state i suppose for them at the moment they're night they're ninth in the premier league which
35:16maybe ordinarily they would have taken but they're coming off the back of a great season last season
35:22they've lost three on the spin now have had a good start to the season do you sense there's a bit of
35:29frustration oh 100 absolutely undoubtedly because they had such a good finish to the end of last
35:35season they actually started well they've got silverware and you felt like they were ready to
35:39kick on going into europe and it just felt like the conversation was always going to be when those european
35:44games kicked in would they be able to would they have the squad capable to manage the premier league
35:49and europe oliver glasder's made noises saying that he's not necessarily happy with the squad
35:53he doesn't feel like they've backed it up and look when you put that out into the universe and then you
35:57start losing games ultimately you're going to have a negative spin around it i had a fan on five live
36:01earlier saying that they were worried that they missed the opportunity in the summer to really go for
36:07it when it came to strengthening and now they're going into a six-month period where they didn't
36:12really strengthen gave more than likely will go and their managers only got six months left as
36:18well they get they've got a chance of still being cute and clever in january maybe a couple of loans
36:23and some players who are out favor elsewhere they can get in because everyone wants to play in the
36:27premier league the problem we were talking about earlier is that a manager who's got an uncertain future
36:33how's he going to persuade someone to come and join the journey that palace are on but joe made a good
36:38point we talked about some players who are just desperate to play first team football at a club
36:42like palace you'll get some through the door if if they don't get any plays through the door and i think
36:47they probably need at least three to then it's going to be difficult to see how the season can be a
36:53success would you worry about signing for a club where the manager had six months left and it was a bit
36:59unclear what was happening it depends on the wages depends what your career never never that
37:05a lot of you say that to be honest i was joking plenty of positives points you know they're a club
37:11that obviously they're on the back of a bad run but they're they're in europe they know that when
37:15they play well they get their team back they can be a real threat in the premier league so
37:19you definitely want to join that party hmm uh he is that guy there's another match of the day
37:25on tuesday night so you can join kelly for that uh the most salad documentary never give up is
37:30available now on iplayer if you've lost track you can catch up with every match of the day and
37:35individual match highlights on ipad
37:44level ball around the corner riders is in and riders scores it hasn't taken manchester city long
37:55is
38:00so
38:01clever ball
38:05clever ball legal jesus hutchinson and mark back post here he is
38:08one one
38:09that was a brilliant goal
38:13voting to try again
38:14game goes deep but this time it does find the head of govary old driven in
38:18front this frenchman is having quite an impact on manchester city this season
38:27tricky one to defend and villa haven't defended it and chelsea have the lead
38:35chelsea just looked a bit ropey in the last few minutes
38:37rogers great ball walk-ins one-one it's ollie walk-ins again at stanford bridge
38:49there's walking
38:53villa have done it again
38:54ollie walk-ins sends the away end at the bridge into delirium
39:05prim-pong
39:06fits away from joe gomez and takes on ugo bueno and pulls it back for gravenberg
39:11to have liverpool lead double dutch prim-pong's assist for gravenberg's finish
39:21ekatike
39:25ekatike through to florian
39:29there's the moment he's been waiting for
39:32allison can't get through makes the first save but the follow-up is put in by santiago bueno
39:44wolves have a glimmer of light
39:48here is second
39:51and odegaard
39:53that's a really good finish by martin odegaard and the skipper scores his first goal of the season
40:02the game is
40:03price another pace on that i think it's an earned goal
40:07jorginio rute has got the final touch on that
40:13rute on the half turn mayari through the crowd and off the post
40:17and the follow-up is smashed in gomez makes it 2-1
40:25lovely little flick that's minty what a save that is that looked like a goal all day long
40:32so on last night's match of the day gabby said that if they'd had a goalkeeper in the studio
40:39they'd have done four minutes on that save and we have four minutes of chat left
40:45we just need a goalkeeper i just yeah danny oh danny you can resist could you fill your boots go on
40:52right let's do this let's do this right okay so i want to point out that david rare doesn't just
40:59make that save out the blue he's not all game he's got he's making these movements especially in the
41:04second half when they're pushing readjusting from from cross to shot that's very simple but the
41:10movements are the same here he is we see him highlighted he's set for the cross and there's
41:15minter puts it into the middle readjust resets little micro movements you'll see him highlighted
41:20all right it's not a good shot but he's set for it that's the point i'm making here we see his
41:24positioning nice and high ready to help his defense is the cross coming in this actually is the goal
41:30but you can't judge him for that look at the movement all the times always getting as sharp as
41:34he can making it as difficult as he can this is the moment make it difficult great spring i'm telling
41:39you if that's on target he makes a brilliant save and that is the reason why when it comes to the
41:44big moments he's ready here we see this is the option this is why he's in the position because
41:49the potential is to come into the box doesn't happen with with with it goes into router beautiful
41:56touch around the corner now you've got to readjust okay it's now going to be a shot i've got to make it
42:00as difficult as i can a little check of the post gets himself in line as quickly as he possibly can
42:05you're not beating me near post you've got to go across me geez what a brilliant save now look you
42:11can have all the technical movements you want in the world get yourself in the right position
42:15but have you got that world-class power have you got that spring have you got the elasticity through
42:20your body to make every single part of your body count david reyer has look at this sets readjusts
42:27every single fiber in his body is making that save absolutely brilliant save a massive moment and that
42:33is why arsenal still stopping the premier league because of that man right there but isn't it like
42:39to the layman to the to the to the non-goalkeeper right when that last one from behind the goal
42:45as you see the shot about to come in you know you sort of know which way it's going to go yeah and yet
42:51raya has to take a step the other way first before he then goes that way right so often you'll see
42:58raya's movement here he's not quite sure as it goes that's that movement can he get set where is he going to
43:03go right it's going to my right hand side he'll quickly assess that through his body you'll see
43:09him splay his legs because he has to get set as we run it on here and you've got to create that momentum
43:14that left foot into the right foot which allows him to get the momentum to fly into that save make
43:19an unbelievable stop because it feels doesn't it to you as well that that slightly goes the opposite way
43:26it slightly goes against instinct to take one step that way it's taking everything for me not not to
43:32get up right now and fly across this room but you've got to create that momentum so i'm set
43:41i'm moving okay i'm going to my right so i've got to load up my left leg to then fly into my right
43:46hand side because you can't just you can't just make sense drop into your right do it at home you'll
43:51see it okay maybe tomorrow the other thing as well and this is a lot from work with you and rob and
43:58shea as well you do spend a lot more time don't you look at the really small steps that goalkeepers
44:03make all the time on all of those clips that joe showed rise making two three four five little
44:09steps before doing anything and it's actually all the stuff from years of training seeing the keepers
44:14over doing that footwork that doesn't come by accident it's just years and years of practicing but
44:18having a goalkeeper like him with the presence and and just the trust they have in him yeah it just
44:24spreads throughout doesn't it yeah they do do realize arsenal so difficult to get through and
44:29then as a as a defender i'm sure it's a great feeling to know if someone does get that chance
44:33you've got someone that power that elasticity to make those big saves massive okay next time you're
44:39on i will get you flying across the show i'm so ready i know you are quickly move on here are the
44:44rest of the goals for christmas week well done it's good dala with the long throw voltamada's head
44:55door good what a memorable way to score your first manchester united goal
45:03tiago plays in sharder too strong for diakite sharder a brilliant brentford goal
45:20fired upfield and that's turned into a really good pass for eagle tiago tiago oh it's in
45:29well not sure if that will go down as his goal but the scoreline now reflects redford's dominance
45:41and they have a three on two sharder making good ground tiago picks it up
45:48sharder devastating from one end to the other form of the punished with ruthless efficiency
45:59and they have a three on one end to the other form of the match and a hat-trick for kevin sharder
46:13and a hat-trick for kevin sharder
46:30nicely done wilson sending it across
46:35they get a second a chance to do so and it's raul jimenez again
46:40with five minutes to go right place right time one nil full of
46:48irabunum for dwight mcneil irabunum oh so clever from beto and it's taken exceptional reactions from
46:57debravka to turn the ball aside jayden anthony
47:05there's a chance here for burnley zian fleming is in
47:08and has come as close to scoring as it is possible to come
47:18before we go let's just take a look at the premier league table sunderland stays seventh after missing
47:23the chance to climb into the top five but they do have their highest points total at this stage
47:28of a premier league season for 15 years palace remain ninth leads are seven points clear of the
47:34relegation zone now and tottenham have risen to 11. that's it from us thanks to danny and joe match of
47:41the day is back on what we think is tuesday as the season reaches the halfway point good night
47:58so
