00:00Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Evening, it may be Christmas week, but the Premier League doesn't stop.
00:46Two games for you on tonight's Match of the Day,
00:49as well as all the goals from the festive period.
00:52Just like myself, Joe Hart and Danny Murphy,
00:54I have no idea what day it is.
00:56We begin with Sunderland against Leeds,
00:58the first time these two have met in the Premier League since Boxing Day 2002.
01:04Steve Bowers at the Stadium of Light.
01:09The managers that day, 23 years ago, were Howard Wilkinson and Terry Venables.
01:14Both clubs now are more than on course to ensure this fixture happens again next season.
01:20Sunderland have only one of two unbeaten home records left intact.
01:24They play their second match without their six players away at AFCON,
01:28and they've suffered a further blow today with an injury to Dan Ballard.
01:32So there's a Premier League debut for Dennis Serkin in a reshuffled back four.
01:37Brian Broby has two goals in his last three games here.
01:41Leeds have just four points away from Mellon Road so far,
01:45but their switch to a back three has changed their fortunes dramatically.
01:49They're unchanged from the side that beat Crystal Palace 4-1.
01:53Dominic Calvert-Lewin aims to score for the sixth successive Premier League match.
01:58Prior to kick-off, Captain Granit Xhaka carries a Sunderland shirt in honour of club director Patrick Truer,
02:08who passed away on Christmas Day.
02:11And there will be a moment of remembrance prior to kick-off.
02:14a AFCON is the first game at VIP.
02:15And there will be a few more points prior to kick-off.
02:24BEEP!
02:25under good pressure
02:45there he goes to press
02:51so too
02:53did Brian Brobick
02:56and Roden has stayed down
03:01after that challenge
03:03from the Dutchman
03:04more the way
03:07his right ankle went over
03:10and he felt it straight away
03:12which is right for
03:15after he's played the ball there
03:16good missing
03:23and Padua
03:30initially
03:32with the poor touch
03:34still recovered
03:37the foul by
03:38Le Fay
03:39Sutherland's turn to have
03:42everybody back
03:43floated in by Stack
03:46Odorate beaten in the air
03:47still haven't got this clear
03:50that was Ampadu in towards Calvert-Lewin
03:52Okafor
03:53that was an uncomfortable one for
04:01Sunderland
04:02this ball was
04:03bouncing and bobbling around
04:05and eventually
04:07Okafor's effort
04:09hit Mukweili
04:09Mukweili
04:10with the closing down
04:23and Roden's in more pain
04:25and I think it's the same
04:27right ankle
04:29from the previous challenge
04:31earlier on
04:32and the look of concern
04:34on Daniel Farker's face
04:35says it all
04:36it is
04:38he's rolled it again
04:43he's rolled it again
04:57Sunderkind
04:57in the way
05:06as he pushed off
05:10then he winced
05:12with pain
05:12Mukweili's throw
05:18Camvert-Lewin
05:21jumping
05:21Xhaka
05:23lovely ball
05:24Adingra
05:25lift off
05:30for the
05:31Stadium of Light
05:32Simon Adingra
05:34his first
05:35Sunderland goal
05:36and the team
05:42with the unbeaten
05:43home league record
05:44are in front
05:46and no surprise
05:49that this was all
05:51created
05:51by Granit Xhaka
05:53awareness
05:54pace of pass
05:56and then
05:57Adingra
05:58opened his body
05:58and did the rest
06:00first touch
06:02controlled it
06:02and a beautiful
06:04second one
06:06finished it
06:07and the man
06:09overlooked by the
06:10Ivory Coast
06:10which is why
06:11he's still here
06:12in the Premier League
06:13has his moment
06:15has his moment
06:15and his team
06:17have the lead
06:1929 minutes in
06:21and Joe
06:26Roden's day
06:27understandably
06:28is done
06:29to lead six defeats
06:37in their eight
06:37away games
06:38one down
06:40in this one
06:41Bion
06:45Carver
06:47Levin's
06:48touches
06:48an excellent
06:48one
06:49Aronson
06:50what a save
06:51I think it was the defender behind the goalkeeper that cleared that
06:57and it stopped a certain goal
07:01but let's have a look at this because
07:04the American must have thought he'd equalised
07:07Trey Hume it is who gets back
07:10brilliant defending to prevent it being 1-1
07:14he couldn't believe it
07:17Alderete
07:19comfortable for Biol
07:24he's got a touch on Lafay
07:28in the ring trying to set Broby away
07:30goalkeeper hesitated
07:31Broby's effort cleared in the end by Biol
07:36the big question is whether there was any connection
07:40between Pires the goalkeeper and Broby the striker
07:43it looked minimal on first viewing
07:47certainly the interpretation of Tony Harrington the referee
07:51and here goes Odingran look at the room he's got to run into
08:01Broby's pulling away
08:04and he knows he should have done better
08:10Leeds were wide open here
08:13oh that's a let off for Leeds
08:17Brian Broby with two goals in his last three games at the stadium of light
08:21off the crossbar when it should have been under it
08:25and this has been checked and cleared
08:28and you would say correctly so
08:32and to do for Leeds
08:39so compressing
08:48Leeds did that well though
08:55Stack
08:57super ball from him and to Aronson
08:59it's taken them less than two minutes
09:10of the second half
09:13and who else
09:14but Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Leeds
09:17he scores for the sixth league game in a row
09:22and the first player
09:23for Leeds United to do that in the top flight
09:26for 65 years
09:28and it all came
09:30from that move from the back
09:32and watch the movement of Calvert-Lewin here
09:36in between the two defenders
09:37beautifully found by Aronson
09:41it's a fabulous team goal
09:43and Calvert-Lewin's incredible streak in front of goal continues
09:47six in a row
09:49seven goals in that time
09:52and he's got Leeds back
09:54to 1-1
09:56just the second touch of Dominic Calvert-Lewin
10:00in the Sunderland penalty area
10:02don't worry about that
10:03it's where it's ended up
10:05Okafor
10:08flicked on by Aronson
10:11over Calvert-Lewin
10:12in came Bogle
10:13that wouldn't quite fall for him
10:17he almost chested that goal with Jadon Bogle
10:20who's never ever scored a Premier League goal
10:23look at this
10:25it wouldn't quite sit down
10:26and he couldn't believe that
10:29that wasn't on target
10:30from Leeds
10:35make their domination count here
10:37with another goal
10:38there goes Goodmanson
10:40and Padoue
10:43his effort
10:47blocked by Serkin
10:48and it is a point apiece
10:53Sunderland's unbeaten home record
10:55is still intact
10:56Leeds extend their unbeaten run
10:59to five games
11:00Sunderland won
11:01Leeds won
11:02I'm a bit in between
11:06if I'm honest
11:07because
11:07we were by far
11:08the better team
11:09have dominated
11:11each of these statistics
11:12and should have
11:12probably won this
11:13with game
11:14missing a bit
11:16the clinical edge
11:16in their box
11:18and for that
11:19yes definitely
11:20good point
11:20can't complain too much
11:22again great mentality
11:23to come back
11:24but could have been
11:26could have been three
11:27and for that
11:27I'm not dancing
11:28on the table tonight
11:29yeah tough game
11:30as expected
11:32because we knew before
11:33that Leeds were a good side
11:35in good form
11:36and they are still
11:37in good form
11:37so they showed
11:38great quality
11:39on the pitch today
11:40we started well
11:41I think
11:41we scored
11:42even at the end
11:43of the first half
11:44we had the opportunity
11:44to score the second goal
11:45I think
11:46it was a key moment
11:47because after that
11:48I think
11:49when they changed
11:50their structure
11:50we struggled a bit
11:51to find our references
11:52for the build-up
11:53for the high press
11:54so they were dominant
11:55at that time
11:55we found the energy
11:57to switch the momentum
11:58sometimes
11:59even at the end
11:59of the game
12:00we had the opportunity
12:00to be a bit more dangerous
12:03but I think
12:04it's a fair result
12:04at the end
12:05what about the goal
12:06what a team goal
12:06every single outfield player
12:08touched the ball
12:08in fact no
12:09every single player
12:10touched the ball
12:10because it started
12:11with a goalkeeper
12:11yeah I think
12:12we've shown that
12:13we can mix our game up
12:14over the past few weeks
12:16you know
12:16we can be direct
12:17we can play football
12:18which is good versatility
12:20within the team
12:21so a good goal scored
12:23six in a row
12:25you've scored in now
12:26the last Leeds player
12:26to do that
12:27in a top flight
12:2765 years ago
12:29I mean
12:29how good a feeling is that
12:30yeah it's always
12:31a good feeling
12:32to just be scoring regularly
12:33you know
12:34I'm in a good moment
12:36at the minute
12:36you know
12:36my timing's good
12:37and I think
12:39as a team
12:40we're gelling a bit more
12:41and things are going
12:42well for us
12:42both teams
12:44scored good goals
12:45let's start
12:45with the Sunderland one
12:46which had an element
12:48of Joe Rodon's injury
12:49playing into it
12:50yeah he took a few
12:52good hits
12:53in the first
12:53kind of 20 or so minutes
12:55but Joe Rodon
12:56he's such a warrior
12:58you know
12:58he's not missed a game
12:59for two years
13:00he's got a great mentality
13:01exactly what you want
13:02from your centre half
13:03you want him playing
13:04no matter what goes on
13:06in the game
13:06and that was really tested
13:07for him in the first half
13:09you see
13:09on the front foot
13:11Sunderland looking to set
13:12the tone
13:12making the stadium
13:13a light
13:13an awful place to play
13:15unfortunate
13:16but he really gets hit hard
13:17there
13:17Broby doing his job
13:18Adinger again
13:19closing down
13:20wins the ball
13:21but look
13:22Joe Rodon
13:22takes a really good hit
13:24there and you can see
13:24he's in a real lot of pain
13:26on the same ankle
13:26to get that hit twice
13:27in a row
13:28that's when you think
13:29to yourself
13:29you come off
13:30and you're chatting
13:30with your physios
13:31can you play on
13:32yes I can
13:33just give me a minute
13:34this is two minutes
13:35after coming back on
13:36doesn't really challenge
13:37for the first one
13:38but this from Granit Xhaka
13:40beautiful pass
13:41into Adinger
13:42and look
13:43of course
13:43Joe Rodon
13:44doesn't quite get up
13:45with his team
13:45he's the one
13:46playing him on side
13:47beautiful touch
13:48and he can't get
13:49quite get out to him
13:50if he's fully fit
13:51does he get to that
13:52I don't know
13:52but look
13:52I've got to celebrate
13:53this goal
13:54this is an absolute
13:55bit of genius
13:56Xhaka
13:57beautiful reverse pass
13:58disguise on it
13:59this touch
14:00Adinger
14:00sets it
14:01makes it unsavable
14:02outside the post
14:04curling back in
14:05brilliant goal
14:06and that was the tempo
14:07that Sunderland set
14:08in the first half
14:09I think it's worth saying
14:10as well with Rodon
14:11as a manager
14:13and as a teammate
14:14of his
14:15you want that attitude
14:16somebody's desperate
14:18to stay on the pitch
14:19to try and play through
14:21because hindsight
14:22is a wonderful thing
14:23isn't it
14:23oh well maybe
14:24but you are right
14:25I suppose everybody
14:26wants somebody
14:27to try and play
14:28through it
14:28they'll get more
14:29benefits from that
14:30throughout a season
14:31than they will get hurt
14:32if you've got
14:33a group of players
14:35with that same mindset
14:36you've got a good group
14:37the other thing
14:38that that injury did
14:39was it deprived
14:40Leeds of
14:41one third
14:41of their back three
14:42which has been
14:43really successful
14:44for them
14:44over recent weeks
14:46Daniel Falker
14:47deserves great credit
14:48for the decision
14:49he made
14:50he changed the system
14:51when the substitute
14:52happened from a 3-5-2
14:53to a 4-3-3
14:54and it completely
14:56changed the momentum
14:56of the game
14:57in Leeds' favour
14:58it's a system
14:59that didn't work
15:00initially
15:00at some stages
15:01early in the season
15:02and he's had a lot
15:03of credit for getting
15:03a strike partner
15:04like the Calvert-Lewin
15:05but this was exactly
15:06the right time to do it
15:07against the way
15:08Sunderland set up
15:09they kind of matched up
15:10here you can see
15:11the run from Harrison
15:12he joins Calvert-Lewin
15:13he's playing to the
15:14right of him
15:14Okafor to the left
15:16and Sunderland
15:17back four
15:17were now occupied
15:18completely occupied
15:20and they should have
15:20equalised with this chance
15:21and then the attacks
15:23just came
15:24time and time again
15:25Okafor actually
15:26seemed to enjoy it
15:27more on the left
15:28he got more of the ball
15:29he could see the pictures
15:30ahead of him
15:30he's running at people
15:31which he's good at
15:32he had runners off him
15:33and all of a sudden
15:35Leeds were in control
15:35they looked like
15:36their home team
15:36I know Sunderland
15:37have got players missing
15:38etc
15:38it's unfair enough
15:39but there's the system change
15:41there's the 4-3-3
15:42and as you can see
15:43the front three there
15:44occupying that back four
15:45stopping Sunderland's full-backs
15:47having plenty of the ball
15:48which they did before this
15:49I think Aronson
15:51if he goes a bit ahead
15:52of the full-back
15:53he gets himself in
15:54Aronson again
15:55in that inside right position
15:56in between the centre half
15:57and full-back
15:58chance at the back post
16:00if he anticipates
16:02the cross
16:03second half
16:04more of the same
16:05wonderful goal
16:06brilliant move
16:07good passing
16:08crisp
16:09stack as well
16:10what performance
16:11he had as well
16:12playing in the middle
16:12of the pitch
16:13and we talked about
16:15final product
16:16or end product
16:17final pass
16:18I should say
16:19that was a brilliant ball
16:20and a great finish
16:20from Calvert-Loon
16:21who's on fire
16:22at the moment
16:23and then just after that
16:25they had the best chance
16:25to go and win it
16:26when the ball comes in
16:29you can see the full-backs
16:30are occupied
16:31by the wide men
16:32the two forwards
16:32either side
16:33so Bogle gets in
16:34tries to stomach it
16:35into the back of the net
16:36but credit to that man
16:38because he's had
16:39his doubters in the past
16:40and even been talked about
16:42lack of tactical awareness
16:43today
16:44bang on
16:45and these numbers
16:45represent the change
16:47it really is good
16:48that's a real dominance
16:49against a team
16:49who are good at home
16:50just the thing on that
16:51front three
16:52is the key to it then
16:53that even if one of them
16:54is wide
16:54the other one is close
16:55to Calvert-Loon
16:56yeah they both
16:57played close to him
16:58sometimes I think
16:59when you play a 4-3-3
17:00if they stay really wide
17:01the forward gets isolated
17:02but what it did
17:03with the full-backs
17:04of Sunderland
17:05coming in
17:05with the danger
17:06it also allowed
17:07the full-backs to bomb on
17:09it was
17:09it was perfect timing
17:11to do it
17:11and a brave decision
17:12from it
17:13Daniel Farker says
17:14he isn't going to be
17:15dancing on the tables
17:16although I think
17:16if my team had scored
17:17a goal like this
17:18I'd be on that table
17:19and dancing
17:20you've never danced
17:21on a table
17:21it was a long time ago
17:23a long time ago
17:25Joe
17:25all serious
17:26though
17:26this is a brilliant goal
17:28and this is a team
17:29that's absolutely
17:30brimming with confidence
17:31good turnover
17:331-0 down
17:34no panic
17:35looking to build
17:36into the second half
17:37obviously had that
17:38tactical rejig
17:39that Danny's touched on
17:40but at no point
17:41are they forcing anything
17:42making angles
17:43for the goalkeeper
17:44they all look comfortable
17:45in possession
17:45pass here
17:47into Okafor
17:48little bit of spice
17:49on it
17:49and then stack
17:50this ball here
17:51brilliant
17:52that's every player
17:52apart from Calvert-Lewis
17:53touched it now
17:54Aronson attacking
17:56Calvert-Lewis
17:56getting into the area
17:57where he's been so good
17:58this season
17:59finishes it with a plum
18:00absolutely brilliant team goal
18:02and that's a team
18:03brimming with confidence
18:04and we will all have seen
18:06I am sure
18:07the graphic
18:09that has done the rounds
18:10this week
18:10of Dominic Calvert-Lewis
18:12this season
18:12only being able to score
18:13in a straight line
18:14that's where all his goals
18:16have come from
18:17the one today
18:18is that one
18:18that's just on the right
18:20of that straight line
18:21but we also had a look
18:23at where he scored his goals
18:24in his most successful season
18:26at Everton
18:26and whilst it isn't
18:27a straight line
18:28Danny
18:28it is still
18:30with the exception
18:31of two
18:31two and a half
18:32all within the frame
18:34of the goal
18:35yeah it's intelligent runs
18:37knowing where to be
18:37anticipating the crosses
18:38but simple messaging
18:41isn't it
18:41for any young
18:42forwards out there
18:43stay central
18:44don't go wandering
18:46when you're not in the game
18:47stay in that position
18:48and also the other thing
18:49I think is important
18:50as well is
18:50that the team you're playing
18:52in knows your strengths
18:53where you want the ball
18:54the ball goes in early
18:55from Leeds doesn't it
18:56yeah exactly
18:57and I think it's a dream
18:58for a wide man
18:59you know you can just
18:59beat your man
19:00and get it in
19:01you've got someone
19:01who's looking dominant
19:02looking dangerous
19:03in the middle
19:03and that threat's
19:04always there
19:05just one
19:05because we've done
19:06a lot of praising
19:06of Leeds here
19:08maybe understandably so
19:09just one on Sunderland
19:10because they are
19:11depleted by AFCON
19:12they've got six players
19:14away
19:14they didn't have
19:15Ballard today either
19:16who's been integral
19:17this season for them
19:18and they've still
19:19come away with a point
19:20they are going to have
19:21to dig in at times
19:22through this period
19:23aren't they
19:23they're still unbeaten
19:24they can be very proud
19:25of that performance
19:26they had players today
19:26who haven't played
19:27many minutes
19:28Odinger was a threat
19:29the whole way through
19:30they've got a really
19:32good squad
19:33they've got players
19:34who are match winners
19:35Xhaka's still leading
19:36the team
19:37they had moments
19:39in the game
19:39but what they've done
19:40this season
19:41and what they continue
19:42to do is a breath
19:43of fresh air really
19:43right Spurs have only won
19:46once in the league
19:47in the last two months
19:48they travelled to a
19:48Crystal Palace side
19:49who did the double
19:50over them last season
19:51Jonathan Pearce
19:52was there
19:53those two Palace wins
19:55last season
19:56for as many as they'd achieved
19:58in the previous 22 meetings
20:00both of these needing
20:01to end their end of year slumps
20:03Palace thumped at Leeds
20:04and then dumped out
20:05of the league cup
20:05on penalties at Arsenal
20:06Spurs with two league defeats
20:08in a row
20:09and just 36 points
20:10in 2025
20:11Oliver Glasner makes four changes
20:14to the side
20:15beaten at Arsenal
20:15Dean Henderson
20:16of course returns in goal
20:18maintaining his league
20:19over present record
20:20Kline replaces
20:21right wing back
20:22if any is preferred
20:23to in Katia
20:24and with Richards injured
20:25Hughes comes into midfield
20:27and Lerma slots back
20:28into defence
20:29Tottenham are forced
20:30into their two changes
20:32with Romero and Simmons
20:33both sent up
20:34against Liverpool
20:35Danso and Richarlison
20:36start for them
20:37Porro
20:44can get it over the top
20:46for the run of Bergbao
20:48springs back to Kudas
20:49Bergbao
20:51goodness with the run
20:53good work by Tottenham
20:59Richarlison
20:59against Toronto
21:00play Tottenham
21:01lead with a very good goal
21:02they've hardly had a kick
21:05of the ball
21:06and with 16 minutes gone
21:08Richarlison puts them ahead
21:10just see if Bergbao's
21:15on or offside there
21:16I think he looks offside
21:17in the build-up
21:18it's going to be checked
21:19comes out to him
21:21from Kudas
21:21gives him the return
21:23Porro comes into the line
21:26it's a lovely cross in
21:27Richarlison might be offside
21:29well taken goal
21:33naked eye shows to me
21:34that Bergbao's offside
21:36it is being checked now
21:38goal is rolled out
21:44lovely move by Tottenham
21:47but it won't count
21:49and it would have been harsh
21:50on Crystal Palace
21:51Mateta
21:56real handful for Dancer
21:59and he's got away from him
22:00and into Di Veni
22:01there's a little spin
22:03he was hoping for contact
22:04from a Spurs player
22:05Lerma to Wharton
22:06cool under pressure
22:07Mateta
22:08goes for goal
22:09through the legs of the defender
22:10and why
22:11what a clever effort this
22:13really is up for it today
22:16Jean-Philippe Mateta
22:17Thomas Frank
22:19already under pressure
22:21three wins
22:23in 12 in all
22:24Crystal Palace
22:27drummers
22:28behind the goal
22:29to the left hand side
22:30beating out a frantic
22:32to two at the moment
22:33now Colin Moane
22:36is holding his face
22:37Spencer's got involved
22:38Hughes wanted to get
22:40on with the game
22:42I think there was
22:44an accidental
22:45bash in the face
22:46there for
22:47Colin Moane
22:48as he falls
22:49he just gets
22:50knocked in the face
22:52with the side
22:53of Will Hughes
22:54near as he comes in
22:55to try and get the ball
22:55back off him
22:56a bit of something
22:58and nothing
22:58Jeremy Pinot
23:00now it goes to Wharton
23:03what's dangerous
23:06he's headed back across
23:07goal
23:07and
23:08it's a chance
23:09for Mateta
23:10really
23:10that he should have
23:11buried
23:11a lovely header
23:13back across goal
23:14by Maxence Lacroix
23:15looks for Mateta
23:17couldn't get over the ball
23:19and this is what
23:21Crystal Palace fans
23:22will tell you
23:22they've been creating
23:24chances for weeks
23:25and weeks
23:26but they haven't been
23:26taking them
23:27Bergfell
23:29Colin Moane
23:30getting away from
23:31Lerma
23:32Gay's there with him
23:33good intervention
23:34Gay
23:34Tottenham appealing
23:36that it hit his hand
23:37big claim
23:38we are having a look
23:40the ball
23:43the ball did strike an arm
23:44but it's a supporting arm
23:45supporting his body
23:46as it fell
23:47according to the
23:48VAR
23:49James Bell
23:50correct decision
23:51I think most people
23:52would agree
23:52Porra with the corner kick
23:55I think it's Tottenham's
23:56first of the game
23:56swing into the far post
23:59it's dangerous
24:00needs to be clear
24:00but Charlotten
24:01and nodded in
24:02by Gray
24:03and this time
24:05shorting the goal
24:06will count
24:06and Tottenham will lead
24:07Crystal Palace
24:10undone
24:10at a set piece
24:11where their defending
24:13was scruffy
24:14at best
24:14and for Archie Gray
24:17it's a first
24:17Tottenham goal
24:18lots of defenders
24:21back in there
24:22but they can't deal
24:22with it
24:23the header down
24:24wasn't dealt with
24:24Richarlison nodded it on
24:26and Gray
24:26with a simple glance
24:28the three Palace
24:30defenders there
24:31that could have dealt
24:31with that far better
24:32than they did
24:33and Gray
24:35flicked it on
24:36and Tottenham
24:37Hotspur lead
24:37but Crystal Palace
24:39will feel hard done
24:40but they've bossed the game
24:41Tottenham hold on
24:44and get the win here
24:44it will buck a trend
24:46really because
24:46when they faced
24:48opponents
24:48start of the day
24:49above them in the table
24:50they've only won
24:50one of their last
24:5119 London derbies
24:52away from home
24:53Crystal Palace
24:55were above them
24:55in the table
24:56this morning
24:56Pina
24:59takes it back
25:01from Mitchell
25:02spins across it
25:03it's a good setter
25:03Teveni
25:04over the bar
25:05big chance
25:06really big chance
25:08for the youngster
25:09lovely work
25:13down the left-hand side
25:14Pina and Mitchell
25:15the cross was a beaut
25:16spun in
25:17clever headed down
25:18by Klein
25:19Deveni
25:19first touch
25:21took it away
25:21from goal
25:22so he had to spin
25:23and then over it went
25:25one or two Tottenham players
25:30are looking tired
25:31Pina
25:33couldn't get there
25:35Lama will take it
25:42long
25:43up in the air
25:51by Spence
25:52Mateta
25:52she pushed there
25:54by Richarlison
25:54is there enough
25:56contact to worry
25:57the referee
25:58or the VAR
25:58bit of pushing
26:03and shoving
26:04going in there
26:04Mateta
26:05and Spence
26:05in comes the
26:09resulting corner
26:10Lama's headed
26:11back across
26:12good touch
26:13from Pina
26:14sensible ball
26:15wide
26:15Wharton
26:16head across
26:17in second
26:18time of asking
26:19it's come up
26:20to Lama
26:20clever header
26:21just one
26:22big chance
26:24fell
26:24to Maxence
26:25Lacroix
26:26it's been another
26:28game in which
26:29Crystal Palace
26:30have created
26:31opportunities
26:32and haven't
26:33taken them
26:34there he's
26:41downward header
26:41only carries
26:42to Gray
26:43on the run
26:43now Takuda
26:45spins the cross
26:46in far
26:46powers
26:47Richarlison
26:48is there
26:48and Tottenham
26:49lead 2-0
26:50in terms of
26:53possession
26:53they've been
26:54second best
26:55in terms of
26:56chances created
26:57they've been
26:58second best
26:59but they lead
27:002-0
27:00and it's all
27:01about goals
27:02Richarlison
27:06ooh
27:07is he on
27:07or is he off
27:08this one is
27:12being checked
27:13for offside
27:13from there
27:14he looks offside
27:15to me
27:15and is Richarlison
27:17going to have
27:18a second one
27:18ruled out
27:19will it be a
27:21lifeline
27:21for Crystal Palace
27:23Richarlison
27:30offside
27:31when he's
27:31scored
27:31again
27:32it will not
27:33count
27:34I can't believe
27:35I can't believe
27:35his fortune
27:36they didn't
27:38time it
27:38with perfection
27:39as they
27:39should have
27:40done
27:40go go go
27:46Warton
27:48picks it up
27:48again
27:49Ucce
27:50doesn't have to
27:51force the
27:52corner
27:52Tottenham
27:54this season
27:54have been
27:55cursed by
27:56conceding goals
27:57at set pieces
27:58and by
27:59conceding late
28:00goals
28:00Warton in it
28:04comes
28:05over by
28:05Gahing
28:06and it
28:06would have
28:06counted
28:07that's a
28:08massive chance
28:09goodness me
28:11they've had some
28:11amounts to be a
28:14free header
28:14really from there
28:15just checked his
28:18watch
28:19it's a victory
28:19that would take
28:20Spurs up
28:202-11
28:22maybe on
28:2325 points
28:25which would be
28:26a couple of
28:27points
28:27above
28:28the number
28:29they had
28:30after 18
28:30games last
28:31season
28:31here comes
28:33Tottenham
28:34Odderberg
28:35Michalesson
28:35back to him
28:36can he wrap
28:36it up here
28:37Odderberg
28:37with a shot
28:38off the post
28:39and that
28:39would have
28:39done it
28:40good crisp
28:42drive
28:42because it
28:42was at an
28:43awkward height
28:43for him
28:44and off
28:44the woodwork
28:45Tottenham
28:46close
28:46to a second
28:47what a bit
28:57gets beyond
28:59Essay
28:59takes the
29:00return
29:01low crossing
29:02fizzes all the way
29:03through Poro
29:04in space
29:04back it comes
29:06Bentancur
29:07good save
29:08and a wave
29:10by Lerma
29:10too much space
29:14here for Poro
29:14really
29:15from a Palace
29:15point of view
29:16and Henderson
29:18that's a fine
29:18save because I
29:19think he saw
29:19it late
29:20from behind
29:20players
29:21and Tottenham
29:23win it
29:23a welcome
29:25victory for
29:26Thomas Frank
29:26but for
29:27Crystal Palace
29:28now it's
29:29their worst
29:30run of league
29:31defeats in a
29:32row under
29:33Oliver Glasner
29:34and their
29:35season is
29:36beginning to
29:37look in
29:37danger of
29:39being undermined
29:40as Tottenham
29:41win this by
29:42a goal to
29:43nil
29:43first ever
29:45senior goal
29:46how does that
29:46feel
29:46yeah it's
29:47incredible
29:48after I can't
29:49even remember
29:50how many
29:50appearances
29:51I'm on now
29:52but after
29:52112
29:53I mean I'll
29:55give myself
29:56a little bit
29:56of leeway
29:58because I've been
29:58playing centre
29:58back and left
29:59back but to be fair
29:59I should have got a
30:00goal before this
30:00so yeah it's just
30:02an incredible feeling
30:03to get it
30:03so yeah
30:04you have been
30:04under pressure
30:05the team's been
30:05under pressure
30:06but they did
30:07fight and they
30:08did battle for you
30:08they fight for each
30:09other they fight for
30:10the club
30:10they fight for staff
30:11they fight for me
30:11they fight for everyone
30:12the fans
30:13most importantly
30:14I like the character
30:15and the mentality
30:16in the team today
30:17that so much
30:18we need to improve
30:18but I like that
30:19discipline we had
30:20because you need to
30:21have that
30:22in the Premier League
30:23there will be
30:24difficult games
30:24especially away from home
30:25very disappointing result
30:27but it's a little bit
30:29like many games
30:31this year
30:32that if you don't score
30:34you can't win
30:34and it's not that
30:35we don't create
30:36the chances
30:36we just miss them
30:37right now
30:38and then we get
30:39punished with a set
30:40play
30:40and that's a little
30:41bit the story
30:42that happens
30:42more or less
30:43every game
30:44I see the effort
30:45but to be honest
30:48the finishing quality
30:49was not there today
30:49well it was a good
30:51afternoon for Archie
30:52Gray
30:53as he gets his
30:54first senior goal
30:57for Spurs there
31:00great feeling
31:00great feeling for him
31:01best feeling
31:02I would never know
31:03but it wasn't a go
31:06or you actually
31:07it wasn't a great
31:09game was it
31:10but as Thomas Frank
31:12said maybe the
31:13quality can improve
31:14but they had a bit
31:15of something today
31:16no it really wasn't
31:17a great game
31:17and it wasn't
31:17necessarily a top
31:19performance
31:19you know they were
31:20lacking a little bit
31:21of identity
31:21you find with Spurs
31:22but when you're
31:23lacking identity
31:24and you want people
31:24to just roll their
31:25sleeves up and play
31:25for you
31:26that's where people
31:27like Richarlison
31:28come to the fore
31:28now look there's
31:30no doubt about it
31:31if Zylanki's fit
31:32he's leading the line
31:32but this season
31:33he's just been a pest
31:35hasn't he
31:35and he's got good
31:36numbers
31:36he's a real threat
31:37when he gets in
31:38he makes it difficult
31:40Lerma filling in
31:41this afternoon
31:41for Richards
31:42he's just pulling
31:43onto him
31:44and if it's not
31:44for Bergvold
31:45just being slightly
31:46offside
31:46they can get
31:46themselves off
31:47to a really good
31:48start here
31:48his movement's good
31:49he's alive
31:50he's just ready
31:51off the back
31:52caught them sleeping
31:54and not ideally
31:55they go on
31:55they're up there
31:56but here I know
31:58what he's trying
31:58to do as a goalkeeper
31:59he wants Henderson
32:00to slide at him
32:01that's how he is
32:02that's his sort of
32:02mentality
32:03he wants to win
32:03those sort of
32:04free kicks
32:04but look tough game
32:06scrappy
32:06he's really strong
32:07there
32:07flicks it on for
32:08Archie Gray
32:09and he gets his
32:10big moment
32:10now look
32:11Palace absolutely
32:12battered them
32:12possession wise
32:13they had lots of
32:14chances
32:14but if Tottenham were
32:15going to wrap this
32:16game up
32:16he was going to be
32:17involved in it
32:18just can't quite hold
32:19his run here
32:20an excellent ball
32:21from Poulos
32:21but like I say
32:23towards the end of the
32:24game
32:24Tottenham are just
32:25hanging on
32:25look at that kick
32:25from Vicario
32:26but his awareness
32:27as Lacroix comes into
32:28him here
32:28this is really
32:29really good play
32:30sharp
32:31Odebert
32:32little 1-2
32:33it's not conventional
32:35but at the end of the
32:36day you've got to try
32:36and win yourself
32:37the game
32:37it's a lovely
32:38pull into his
32:39stride
32:39and an unlucky
32:42effort
32:42but here we just
32:43see a beautiful
32:43flick around the
32:44corner
32:44of Brennan
32:45Johnson
32:45like I say
32:46if Tottenham
32:46were going to
32:46wrap this game
32:47up and make it
32:47a little bit
32:48more comfortable
32:48he was going
32:49to be involved
32:50in it
32:50and that's
32:51Archie Gray
32:51saying thanks
32:52for the assist
32:52and that's the
32:54difference for him
32:54this season
32:55and how much
32:56Thomas Frank
32:57has used him
32:57compared to last
33:00is it a case of
33:01digging in for them
33:02this season
33:03is that what
33:04Thomas Frank
33:04was saying
33:05well I think
33:06for now
33:06the next few weeks
33:07they've had such
33:08extremities of
33:09performances
33:09some really good
33:10ones
33:10some awful
33:11ones
33:11when you're not
33:13playing well
33:13as Joe said
33:14the fans
33:15all they want to
33:16see is you
33:16fight
33:17for everything
33:18even the defeat
33:19against Liverpool
33:20with a man down
33:22they showed
33:22character
33:23they showed
33:23some guts
33:24and the fans
33:25walk away
33:25going okay
33:26somewhere to work
33:27on
33:27which was actually
33:27the big criticism
33:28of the Arsenal game
33:29and Chelsea
33:30they just kind of
33:31sat there and waited
33:32to be beaten
33:33was the criticism
33:34yeah but Tottenham
33:35with the quality
33:35they've got
33:36they need to be
33:38more composed
33:39more creative
33:40more on the front
33:41foot
33:42you can't play
33:43like that every week
33:44Palace had 62%
33:45possession
33:46and dominated them
33:46for large parts
33:47of the game
33:48and deserve some
33:49credit too
33:49even though they lost
33:50yeah and you'll
33:51go look at that
33:51because as Joe says
33:52they sort of
33:53battered them
33:54in every way
33:55bar actually
33:55scoring
33:56yeah they were
33:58completely in control
34:00for long periods
34:00because they
34:01played really good
34:02football
34:02they controlled
34:03the midfield areas
34:04it was just
34:06lacking in the
34:07final third
34:07which when they
34:08look at these
34:09highlights
34:11post video
34:11tomorrow
34:12whenever it is
34:13they'll feel a bit
34:14better about themselves
34:14because if you keep
34:15getting in these
34:15good positions
34:16you're going to
34:17score goals
34:18Mateta we know
34:19is more reliable
34:20than that normally
34:21he's just having
34:21a little spell
34:22this from
34:23Devaney
34:23is a chance
34:25really should be
34:26ready and should
34:26be taken
34:27I know they're
34:27missing Saar
34:28who's at Afcon
34:29who's a big
34:29player for them
34:30and they kept
34:30probing
34:31they kept getting
34:32in the right areas
34:33and that
34:34you know
34:34we've seen Palace
34:35this season
34:36have really good
34:36spells
34:37they're just going
34:38through a little
34:39bit of a bad
34:39one at the minute
34:40and it's only
34:40because
34:41when they're getting
34:42in the final
34:42third
34:43they're not
34:43playing with
34:45they're not
34:45got the same
34:46killer instinct
34:46the same
34:47conviction
34:47this is a
34:48wonderful chance
34:49from Lacroix
34:50he's got to be
34:51scoring that
34:51really
34:52and they did
34:52deserve something
34:53out of the game
34:53you've got to be
34:53honest about it
34:54Gaye who scored
34:55the winner at
34:55Fulham from a
34:56very similar
34:56position there
34:57gets a chance
34:58late in the game
34:58I know he's
34:59frustrated
35:00I know he's
35:00angry
35:00and their squad
35:01at the moment
35:02is thin
35:03you know
35:04he hasn't got
35:04the bench was
35:05inexperienced
35:06he hasn't got
35:06an abundance of
35:07options
35:07so they'll get
35:08through this
35:09they're in a
35:10it's just
35:11a slightly strange
35:12state
35:13I suppose
35:13for them
35:14at the moment
35:14they're ninth
35:15in the Premier League
35:16which maybe
35:16ordinarily
35:17they would have
35:18taken
35:18but they're
35:20coming off the
35:20back of a
35:21great season
35:21last season
35:22they've lost
35:23three on the
35:24spin now
35:25having had a
35:25good start
35:26to the season
35:27do you sense
35:28there's a bit
35:28of frustration
35:30oh 100%
35:31absolutely
35:32undoubtedly
35:32because they
35:33had such a
35:34good finish
35:34to the end
35:35of last season
35:35they've actually
35:36started well
35:37they've got
35:37silverware
35:38and you felt
35:38like they were
35:39ready to kick
35:39on going into
35:40Europe
35:40and it just
35:41felt like the
35:42conversation was
35:43always going to
35:43be when those
35:44European games
35:44kicked in
35:45would they be
35:45able to
35:46would they have
35:46the squad
35:46capable to
35:48manage the
35:48Premier League
35:48and Europe
35:49Oliver Glasder's
35:50made noises
35:51saying that he's
35:51not necessarily
35:52happy with the
35:53squad
35:53he doesn't feel
35:53like they've
35:54backed it up
35:54and look when
35:55you put that
35:55out into the
35:56universe
35:56and you start
35:57losing games
35:58ultimately you're
35:59going to have a
35:59negative spin
35:59around it
36:00I had a fan
36:00on Five Live
36:01earlier saying
36:02that they were
36:03worried that they
36:04missed the
36:05opportunity in the
36:06summer to really
36:06go for it when it
36:07came to strengthening
36:08and now they're
36:09going into a six
36:10month period where
36:11they didn't really
36:12strengthen
36:13Gai more than
36:15likely will go
36:16and their managers
36:17only got six months
36:18left as well
36:19they've got a
36:20chance of still
36:20being cute and
36:21clever in January
36:21maybe a couple of
36:22loans and some
36:23players who are out
36:24favour elsewhere
36:25they can get in
36:26because everyone
36:26wants to play in
36:27the Premier League
36:27the problem we
36:28were talking about
36:29earlier is that a
36:29manager who's got
36:31an uncertain future
36:32how's he going to
36:34persuade someone to
36:35come and join the
36:35journey that Palace
36:37are on but Joe
36:38made a good point
36:39when we talked
36:39about it some
36:40players who are
36:40just desperate to
36:41play first team
36:42football at a
36:42club like Palace
36:43you'll get some
36:44through the door
36:44if they don't get
36:46any players through
36:47the door I think
36:48they probably need
36:48at least three
36:49then it's going
36:51to be difficult
36:51to see how the
36:52season can be a
36:53success
36:53would you worry
36:54about signing
36:55for a club where
36:56the manager had
36:57six months left
36:58and it was a bit
36:59unclear what was
36:59happening
37:00depends on the
37:01wages
37:01depends on what
37:02your career
37:02never
37:04I find a lot
37:05of you say that
37:06to be honest
37:07I was joking
37:08there's plenty of
37:10positive points
37:11you know they're
37:11a club that
37:12obviously they're
37:12on the back of
37:13a bad run but
37:13they're in Europe
37:14they know that
37:15when they play well
37:16and they get their
37:16team back they can
37:17be a real threat
37:17in the Premier League
37:18so you definitely
37:19want to join that
37:20party
37:20he is that guy
37:23there's another
37:24match of the day
37:25on Tuesday night
37:26so you can join
37:27Kelly for that
37:28the most
37:29salad documentary
37:30never give up
37:30is available now
37:31on iPlayer
37:32if you've lost track
37:33you can catch up
37:33with every match
37:34of the day
37:34and individual match
37:35highlights on iPlayer
37:37clever ball around the
37:45corner
37:45Reinders is in
37:46and Reinders scores
37:47it hasn't taken
37:49Manchester City long
37:51clever ball
37:57here he is
38:001-1
38:01that was a brilliant
38:05goal
38:05Foden to try again
38:08again goes deep
38:11but this time it
38:12does find the head
38:13of Gavari
38:13driven in
38:14Scherke scored
38:16City in front
38:18this Frenchman is having
38:20quite an impact
38:21on Manchester City
38:23this season
38:24tricky one to defend
38:29and Villa haven't defended it
38:31and Chelsea have the lead
38:33Chelsea have just looked a bit ropey
38:36in the last few minutes
38:37Rodgers great ball
38:38Watkins
38:391-1
38:41it's Oli Watkins again
38:43at Stamford Bridge
38:44there's Watkins
38:50Villa have done it again
38:55Oli Watkins
38:58sends the away end
38:59at the bridge
39:00into Delirium
39:02Prim-Pong
39:05fits away from
39:07Xiao Gomez
39:07and takes on
39:08Hugo Bueno
39:08and pulls it back
39:10for Gravenberg
39:11Liverpool lead
39:13double dutch
39:15Prim-Pong's assist
39:17for Gravenberg's finish
39:18Eketike
39:22Eketike
39:26through to Florian
39:27Wirtz
39:28there's the moment
39:30he's been waiting for
39:32Alisson can't get through
39:38makes the first save
39:39but the follow-up
39:40is put in by
39:41Santiago Bueno
39:43Wolves have a glimmer of light
39:46here is Saga
39:49and Odegaard
39:52that's a really good finish
39:55by Martin Odegaard
39:57and the skipper scores his first goal of the season
40:00he's got the final touch on the final touch on that
40:07Jorginho Rute has got the final touch on that
40:09Rute on the half turn
40:14Nayari through the crowd and off the post
40:17and the follow-up is smashed in
40:19Gomez makes it 2-1
40:22lovely little flick
40:26that's Minty
40:26what a save that is
40:28that looked like a goal
40:30all day long
40:31so on last night's match of the day
40:35Gabby said
40:36that if they'd had a goalkeeper
40:38in the studio
40:38they'd have done 4 minutes
40:40on that save
40:41and we have 4 minutes
40:43of chat left
40:45we just need a goalkeeper
40:46I just
40:46Danny
40:48you can resist could you
40:50fill your boots
40:52go on
40:52right let's do this
40:53let's do this
40:55right okay
40:56so I want to point out
40:58that Davare doesn't just make that save out the blue
41:00he's not
41:01all game
41:02he's got
41:03he's making these movements
41:04especially in the second half
41:05when they're pushing
41:05readjusting from cross to shot
41:08that's very simple
41:09but the movements are the same
41:11here he is
41:11we see him highlighted
41:12he's set for the cross
41:14and there's Minter
41:15puts it into the middle
41:16readjust
41:17resets
41:18little micro movements
41:19you'll see him highlighted
41:20alright
41:21it's not a good shot
41:21but he's set for it
41:22that's the point I'm making
41:24here we see his positioning
41:25nice and high
41:26ready to help his defence
41:28is the cross coming in
41:29this actually is the goal
41:30but you can't judge him for that
41:31look at the movement
41:32all the time
41:33he's always getting as sharp as he can
41:35making it as difficult as he can
41:36this is the moment
41:37make it difficult
41:38great spring
41:39I'm telling you
41:39if that's on target
41:40he makes a brilliant save
41:42and that is the reason why
41:43when it comes to the big moments
41:44he's ready
41:45here we see
41:47this is the option
41:48this is why he's in the position
41:49because the potential is to come into the box
41:51doesn't happen with it
41:53with it
41:53it goes into Ruta
41:54beautiful touch
41:56round the corner
41:57now you've got to readjust
41:58ok
41:59it's now going to be a shot
42:00I've got to make it as difficult as I can
42:01little check of the post
42:03gets himself in line
42:04as quickly as he possibly can
42:05you're not beating me near post
42:07you've got to go across me
42:08jeez
42:09what a brilliant save
42:10now look
42:11you can have all the technical movements
42:13you want in the world
42:14get yourself in the right position
42:15but have you got that world class power
42:17have you got that spring
42:19have you got the elasticity
42:20through your body
42:21to make every single part of your body count
42:23David Rea has
42:24look at this
42:25sets
42:26readjusts
42:27every single fibre in his body is making that save
42:30absolutely brilliant save
42:32a massive moment
42:33and that is why Arsenal are still stopping the Premier League
42:35because of that man right there
42:37but isn't it
42:38like
42:38to the layman
42:40to the non goalkeeper
42:42right
42:42when
42:43that last one
42:44from behind the goal
42:45as you see the shot about to come in
42:47you know
42:48you sort of know which way it's going to go
42:50yep
42:50and yet Rea has to take a step
42:53the other way
42:54first
42:55before he then goes that way
42:57right
42:57often you'll see Rea's movement here
42:59he's not quite sure
43:00as it goes
43:00that's that movement
43:02can he get set
43:02where is he going to go
43:03right
43:04it's going to my right hand side
43:05he'll quickly assess that through his body
43:08you'll see him splay his legs
43:10because he has to get set
43:11as we run it on here
43:12and you've got to create that momentum
43:14that left foot
43:15into the right foot
43:16which allows him to get the momentum
43:17to fly into that save
43:19make an unbelievable stop
43:21because it feels
43:22doesn't it
43:23to you as well
43:24that that slightly
43:25goes against
43:26the opposite way
43:26it slightly goes against instinct
43:28to take one step that way
43:30it's taking everything for me
43:31not to get up right now
43:33and fly across this room
43:34but you've got
43:34oh my god
43:37oh my god
43:38I would love that
43:39you've got to create that momentum
43:40so I'm set
43:41I'm moving
43:42okay I'm going to my right
43:43so I've got to load up my left leg
43:45to then fly into my right hand side
43:47because you can't just
43:48you can't just
43:49make sense
43:49drop into your right
43:50do it at home
43:51you'll see it
43:52okay
43:52maybe tomorrow
43:53the other thing as well
43:55and this is a lot
43:57from work with you
43:57and Rob and Shea as well
43:59you do spend a lot more time
44:01don't you
44:01look at the really small steps
44:03that goalkeepers make all the time
44:04on all of those clips
44:06that Joe showed
44:06Ry's making two, three, four, five little steps
44:09before doing anything
44:10and it's actually all the stuff
44:11from years of training
44:13seeing the keepers over doing that footwork
44:15that doesn't come by accident
44:17it's just years and years of practicing
44:18but having a goalkeeper like him
44:20with the presence
44:21and just the trust they have in him
44:24it just spreads throughout doesn't it
44:26yeah

44:31to know
44:32if someone does get that chance
