Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced a nationwide 'MGNREGA Bachao Andolan' starting January 5 to protest the Centre's decision to rename the scheme to 'Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin)' or 'Ji Ram Ji'. Speaking after a CWC meeting where 91 members took oaths to defend the act, Kharge and Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi accused the government of attacking the federal structure and benefiting corporates. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi defended the move, stating the name 'Ji Ram Ji' is based on Mahatma Gandhi's last words and the scheme now offers 125 days of work. The Congress leadership termed the move an insult to Mahatma Gandhi, while the BJP maintained the revision ensures better implementation.
