00:00A hefty boost of jail time for former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak
00:04as a court finds him guilty of abuse of power and money laundering,
00:08finding him the equivalent of $3.3 billion as well.
00:12While we are disappointed, we are more agitated, not in a bad way,
00:20but agitated to do better in the appeal because by Monday we will file the appeal.
00:26With the greatest respect to the judge, we think that he has made so many blunders in this judgment.
00:34Najib was already serving a six-year sentence for a conviction in a related case
00:39over the now-defunct One Malaysia Development Bahad, or 1MDB,
00:43a state investment fund whose creation he oversaw in 2009
00:47and from which billions were embezzled over the next few years.
00:51The corruption scandal led to Najib's downfall in 2018
00:55as an investigation turned up evidence that over $4.5 billion had been stolen from 1MDB,
01:01with a billion allegedly finding its way into accounts linked to the then Malaysian leader.
01:07Funds were traced back to high-end real estate, a luxury superyacht and private jet,
01:12classical artwork and even a Hollywood movie production.
01:16Najib always maintained he'd been misled over where the funding came from,
01:21insisting a now-on-the-run financier who helped set up 1MDB
01:25told him it was a matter of donations from the Saudi royal family.
01:29For a judge, that simply wasn't believable,
01:32and Najib has now been found guilty on four counts of abuse of power
01:36and 21 charges of money laundering,
01:38which come with 15 years and five years for each count respectively.
01:43While he's to appeal, Najib will serve each sentence consecutively.
