00:00putting my money where my mouth is it's the first ever rookie mind boss showdown school hard knocks
00:06baby of course it's my fault i'm in charge hitting the three most successful freshman bosses head to
00:14head we got a learning curve to get ahead of here there's no doubt about that judging their first
00:19year wins and fails this is outrageous to reveal who we're gonna do it
00:27is the top rookie mind boss
00:32so what are you gonna do about gold this year i'm gonna find it in 15 years of gold rush
00:50now i'm gonna start kicking some ass there have been five rookie mind bosses honestly it's one of
00:56the most challenging things i've ever done but the best of the first year miners boils down to three
01:03teenager parker schnabel it's about making money that's what matters air to tony beats mining empire
01:10kevin beats it's time to show i have what it takes to be the boss and seasoned foreman rick ness
01:16the opportunity is now i just gotta take it getting off to a fast start is essential for a first year
01:24mind boss so the first round of competition is a showdown over who hits their first gold the fastest
01:3316 year old parker schnabel leaves his junior year of high school and goes straight into his freshman
01:44mind boss season i have faith in your management that it will be successful thanks shake
01:51pretty big moment i'm in charge now parker is gifted the big nugget mind by his grandpa john complete
02:02with a working wash plant iron and crude and needs 75 ounces by the end of his first season
02:10to keep the family operation afloat he has vision that he's going to make thousands of dollars every
02:17day and i hope he's right i've got a plan i'm going to execute my plan simple as that parker's plan to
02:25see his first goal is to hit an easy score tailings mined over two decades ago my grandpa mined this bench
02:35up here this is all the tailings from that if their sluice box caught 50 percent of the gold and they
02:41got 100 ounces then then there would be another 100 ounces here so we're going to give a crack at it
02:47hopefully there's a pile of gold sitting in there somewhere
02:55it's the first clean out of dirt that i've picked out i guess
03:05three-fifths of an ounce we only ran four hours so i think we're gonna have a good week
03:20after seeing gold on day one of being the boss
03:24parker spends the rest of his first week running all the tailings
03:29it's working they're getting bigger
03:36it's friday today so we're gonna clean out the whole plant
03:44this is our first full week of running and we've gotten six or seven ounces parker banks almost 10
03:53percent of his season gold within a week of becoming boss i must be doing something right
04:00parker's tailings are a one-time hit he still needs to find more ground to keep sluicing
04:08so he earns four points out of five in the first round next newbie mind boss kevin beats also has an
04:17opportunity to hit first gold fast but he wants a lot more than 75 ounces in his first year i got big
04:26plans to set up a gold mine and run it my way we do have a thousand ounce goal this is a big gamble so
04:32me and faith have to make this work after 20 years working on the family mine clashes with his dad tony
04:40uh what can you do kevin get a test fire yeah i don't even want to go there led to him breaking
04:46away and leasing ground from his old man we'll give you scrivener borrowing equipment to start his
04:53own operation you're not getting the best that we have but you shouldn't have much troubles getting
04:58started all you got to do down there is prove yourself
05:01right now he opened up a mid-sized cut to get going based on what drill holes that tony had and
05:10a little bit of poking around i did between 15 20 feet of muck on top okay to get his 1 000
05:17ounce season goal kevin needs to open a three acre cut in just four weeks so i can keep all the machines
05:26going our current schedule has us uh just losing by the end of the month angles crossed
05:35opening the cut in a dozer borrowed from tony foreman brennan rules something's not feeling right
05:46that's green sick of this
05:49what is this bolts obviously fell off the inside can't keep this old running for morning day four
06:00weeks into the season disaster strikes so yeah this ain't great they need to take out the engine
06:10so it can get to the transmission so it essentially looking like it's going to be down for a while
06:16and it's frustrating i know tony didn't want to give me like his best equipment but this is a little
06:23ridiculous i am definitely going to be talking to tony hey tony hey gavin what's up man uh well need to
06:35talk about that d10 she kind of uh grenaded
06:43what grenaded uh something in the transmission pretty much dead in the water
06:49brother and when you got it what do you want i need to have a spare from you
06:54there's no more pv we all gotta learn be your own boss okay uh yeah gotta run i got to do
07:13more equipment problems we've had a lot of delays we really need to get susing slows progress
07:24coffee there kev i think we're on the uh pay streak here i'll be right down it's two months
07:30over a third of the way through his first season there is some yellow in here before kevin
07:38finally sees his first gold it's nice to have some confirmation ain't it for about a month behind
07:43where we'd want it to be we thought we'd already be sluicing by now but delays delays breakdowns breakdowns
07:49so the faster we can get this pay out the faster we can set the plant up and get right
07:58kevin's problems delay him hitting gold but he eventually clocks a first gold way of 33 ounces
08:06giving him two points in the first round
08:11delays are something our last rookie mine boss can't afford when he starts his new mine from scratch
08:19this year is different i'm the boss it's 100 my operation by the end of this year i'll either be
08:25broke or i'll have my own successful gold mining operation and a pile of gold rick ness came through
08:31the ranks at parker schnabel's operation and in 2018 decides to put his own money on the line and go
08:41it alone i've never had this much responsibility before i've never put you know my own money on the
08:46line like this and now you know my crew is going to be depending on me there's just a lot riding on my
08:52shoulders let's do it let's go start moving mud right ready rick matches kevin's ambition of a 1000
09:03ounce season gold but goes even bigger planning to open up a monster six acre cut
09:09whoo hoping to hit gold in 10 days he goes all in hiring a 475 the biggest dozer in the klondike
09:20for a hundred thousand dollars i've got this 475 for 10 days max that's all i can afford
09:26really to have it running could be sunk before i even get started
09:35you know i need to i need to know what's in the ground now i need to know if it's worth it
09:43that's pay dirt right there right there for sure oh yeah there we go
09:56guys you're not gonna believe this but i actually got a thawed hole down here down to bedrock uh into
10:06the pay gravel so i'm gonna do a pan you guys should come check it out we're really going to
10:10see if we've got gold here or not all right man this is it i haven't even seen anybody paying gold in my
10:21life
10:32there is gold in here whoa all right i'd say there's probably a dozen colors in here if you think now
10:38the size of this pan how many pans there are in here
10:43eh that's all we need to see that's all we need to see it's real it's real it's real now right that's
10:49our freedom right in there but the only way we're gonna get is if we get back to work let's go get
10:53it million dollars boys let's go dad let's go in 10 days rick's dozer gamble delivers his first flakes
11:03of gold later leading to a first gold way of 30 ounces yeah that's mine yeah rick's master plan
11:16gets him on gold fast and sets him up for the rest of the season giving him the full five points
11:24at the end of the first round kevin's bottom of the pile parker is second and rick bulldozers his
11:32way to the top coming up we've got water so i'll go feed the plant the rookies first wash plants are put
11:41to the test time shut it off shut it off shut it off
11:52in the rookie mind boss face-off i must be doing something right three freshman mind bosses
11:58are going head to head could be sunk before i even get started after scoring points for hitting
12:05their first gold rick is in the lead next up we gotta get sluicing we got bills to pay
12:13the heart of their operations are put to the test how they set them up fire them up and keep sluicing in
12:21the wash plant round set up and fire up is no problem for parker schnabel whose inherited plant
12:31is ready to sluice straight off the bat we're definitely making money we're on a roll hopefully
12:37we can keep it up it's going pretty good i'm feeling positive but the young boss hits trouble when he
12:44strikes bad ground pretty poor we need more than a few flakes and decides to up the ante and pushes
12:54old plant to its limits i'm going so fast because i need to feed the plant because we're running 10
12:59hours today this is my fourth load in what 20 minutes just 30 minutes into his 10-hour shift
13:08the plant grinds to a halt
13:19his generators regularly has failed there's nothing i can do up here really could talk to my grandpa
13:29we shut down huh i guess we stopped
13:32we had this problem about 10 years ago okay with his grandpa's help parker gets a new regulator and
13:45is back on the gold in about 20 minutes we'll start getting a little more confident and about an hour
13:55after that we'll be pretty sure we fixed it but it's not long before the relic is down again
14:09hey
14:12this whole bearing is gone this is really not something that we need right now
14:17so that's a pain in the ass we're going to fix this as fast as we can
14:21as his crew get to work removing the broken bearing that spins the trommel
14:28parker has an eight-hour round trip to source a replacement
14:32the plant hasn't been running and we're losing money hand over fist
14:39she's there if it's straight that's perfect all right good job
14:51it looks good at least there's still hope sometimes like my grandpa says all you have is hope
15:05parker's ancient plant gets him sluicing early but his decision to push it to the limit sets him back
15:13more than once giving him three points the next boss kevin beats hatches a plan to make the
15:22perfect wash plant setup yeah look at that now we're almost at the actual getting gold part of gold
15:28mining time by spending time and cold hard cash you want to do it once and do it right and just be done
15:37with it so that's how we're gonna run it kevin blows his life savings on a new seven hundred
15:44thousand dollar shaker deck and splashes another hundred grand on a gas powered generator to run the plant
15:53spent a lot of money already got ahead a thousand ounces to get some of those costs back
15:58hopefully we can hit it kevin takes two weeks to build a 400 foot long mega pad what a good day to
16:07see this on the pad delightful and a further six days tinkering to dial in the plant he's always been
16:14a bit of a procrastinator he's got to get his together and hurry to up a little bit and starts
16:19losing eventually nearly halfway through his first season as a mind boss the slide horizontally a little
16:27bit little bit he's finally ready to fire up i really really really hope it goes well after
16:34all the nights and days running into this so my fingers are crossed my toes are crossed if i could i
16:40cross my tongue oh that's violent all right i'm gonna open her up there we go
16:54that's a big gold that's looking really nice kev so excited bud yes finally i'm currently got relief
17:11give you a hug for this one nice work keep it going spending so much time making sure that
17:17everything's gonna run before we put actual pay through the plant it's a lot of more work but we
17:21are gonna save time down the line kevin's patience and big investment pays off setting him up to sluice
17:30almost non-stop giving him the full five points a perfect score that rick ness could match with his
17:39his own wash plant master plan ruby we got a wash plant i've always had some input as far as how we
17:47set our wash plants up when i was with parker but ultimately he had the final say and now this year
17:52it's it's 100 percent by call now it's time to get some gold after spending big on opening up his first
18:01cut rick drops his last 180 000 on the wash plant of his dreams oh yes look at that beast i christened the
18:12dirt reynolds but unlike kevin rick has an ingenious plan to get it set up and fired up fast i'm unloading giant legos
18:26so i've ordered up a bunch of concrete blocks i'm going to build a bit of a retaining wall for my plant
18:31sit on it should actually be a cleaner setup and less likely to undermine itself i need to get the wash
18:37plan up and running and every minute counts rick takes just four hours to complete the pad
18:43and hauls in the 20-ton wash plan talk about right on the edge
18:52does it worry you that it's hanging off the edge no
18:58now we're getting somewhere
18:59all right all right i'm going to start this thing fire it up
19:11there it is
19:15all right i'm going to put a bucket of dirt in
19:18yeah we're feeding the plant this is a pretty big deal
19:24yay people are smiling
19:25completely what where's all that water coming from carla hit the bypass
19:38shut the pump off hit the bypass shut it off shut it off shut it off shut it off
19:52it off shut up guys
20:01fine
20:03turnbuckles gave way
20:04where's rick
20:05oh i'm going to need a minute
20:09sluice boxes fell off
20:11water almost took out the pad enough to dump the plant off
20:14the pad
20:17know i expected growing pains but this is outrageous
20:20After his disastrous first-ever fire-up as a mind boss,
20:24Rick calls the only man who can save his setup.
20:28How's it going, Rick?
20:29Freddy, man, I'm glad to see you, buddy.
20:31Holy s***, it's been too long.
20:34Man, I don't mind telling you, right off the bat, I'm in a f***ing bad way here.
20:38What do you think?
20:39I think you bought somebody else's nightmare, Rick.
20:43Freddy Dodge replaces the 10-foot sluice box that fell off Rick's plant
20:49with fabricated 30-foot-long gold catchers.
20:54Easy, Rick.
20:56Easy.
21:01Perfect right there, Rick.
21:03That's all I need, man. That's huge relief for me.
21:07And mounts them on an extended pad to secure them in place.
21:16Yeehaw!
21:17Feed the beast.
21:24Sluice box fell in place. That's a good sign.
21:26It's running.
21:30Rick's wash plant finally gets running,
21:33but he's weeks behind schedule,
21:35and he's nearly ruined his season,
21:38earning him just one point.
21:40Halfway through the rookie mind-boss face-off,
21:45Rick drops to last,
21:47and Kevin's perfect setup draws in neck-and-neck with Parker in first place.
21:54My dad was right.
21:55I'm going to go home at the end of the season, broke with no friends.
21:58Coming up...
21:58I don't care if you guys hate my guts.
22:01Right.
22:01I need a little respect.
22:02Can Rick stage a comeback, competing in leadership skills?
22:06Ready!
22:08And final gold ways.
22:11We haven't had that much gold in the pan all summer.
22:13In the freshman mind-boss head-to-head...
22:21Now the race is really on.
22:23Now it's time to get serious.
22:24The rookies have raced to bank their first gold,
22:28fired up their first wash plants,
22:30and banked points on the rookie mind-boss leaderboard.
22:35At the halfway stage,
22:37Kevin and Parker tie for pole position
22:40as we head into the third round.
22:44One of the biggest challenges for any rookie mind-boss
22:48is stepping up to lead their crew
22:50and dealing with any problems they hit.
22:53Round three is a test of leadership.
23:00Kevin Beetz decides to divide responsibilities on his claim.
23:05Go move some dirt, brooks.
23:07Roger that, boss.
23:08He delegates running the cut to his new foreman,
23:12master dirt mover Brennan.
23:14Brennan is going to be a great asset to the operation.
23:17You know, I want to get as much gold as possible
23:19by the time the snow starts flying.
23:21While Kevin focuses on keeping the operation
23:27and machinery running.
23:29Fix this thing so we can run.
23:30Fix that thing so we can run.
23:33After four months of working together,
23:36the plant chews through the last of their first three-acre cut,
23:40and Brennan gets to work opening up more ground.
23:43It needs to happen super fast
23:46because that pile of getting chewed down so quickly,
23:49it's actually getting scary.
23:55Oh, f***.
23:57F*** sakes.
23:59Hey, buddy, I'm stuck down here in the cut.
24:02F*** sakes.
24:03Water from Kevin's sluice pond next door
24:07is flooding Brennan's new cut.
24:09I think I might try and nudge you backwards.
24:20Thanks, Brennan.
24:21You're the man.
24:24I'm going to need to get another pump in here immediately.
24:27We have no extra pumps.
24:29Brennan looks to Kevin for a solution.
24:31Hey, Brennan.
24:38I can't dig pay down here, dude.
24:40I've been needing another pump for, like, a week now.
24:43I know.
24:45We just got to do a cleanup with you
24:47to pay for the f*** thing.
24:49Can we get another pump from Tony?
24:52I'm not going to ask Tony until I have to.
24:54I fixed enough of Tony f***.
24:56I'm just really struggling down here, man.
24:58I'm just getting frustrated as f***ly.
25:00If that PayPal runs out, that shuts off.
25:02We don't have any money coming in,
25:03and I feel like that's on my shoulders.
25:06Like, what do you want me to do here?
25:08I need a f***ing pump.
25:09I don't want to say, like,
25:11we don't have the cash right now.
25:13You don't got a f***ing pump.
25:14F***ing tough.
25:18Okay, well, I'm going to...
25:19I don't know what else to say here.
25:28Hey, Brennan.
25:30Get that out of my face for a while.
25:36Need a f***ing pump.
25:41Weird.
25:41F***ing f***ing f***ing he's gone.
25:43With Kevin failing to deliver,
25:47Brennan takes matters into his own hands.
25:50What we have here is a pump that I went and purchased.
25:55And hopefully she just starts pumping immediately.
26:04Oh, there we go.
26:07Yay!
26:07In 12 hours, Brennan's $11,000 pump drains the cut
26:13and bails Kevin out of trouble.
26:17That's a very nice little pump.
26:19Brennan went off and bumped.
26:21Hopefully, Kevin kind of finds his footing here
26:24and gets into that mind boss role a little bit more.
26:30Kevin's lack of leadership
26:31almost brings his whole operation to a standstill,
26:35scoring him just one point.
26:38A low score that could give Parker the chance to pull ahead.
26:43I don't care if you guys hate my guts.
26:45I need a little respect.
26:47But the teenager has leadership problems of his own.
26:50You can run the excavator and Gary, you can run the truck.
26:54Parker has taken on his grandpa's veteran crew.
26:57Some triple his age and struggles to gain their respect.
27:01I guess that's a no.
27:02It makes me not feel like the boss.
27:05Things don't improve when the teenager tries to stamp his authority.
27:10What are you doing?
27:11I'm coming back.
27:13I'm on a court next for your grandfather.
27:15My grandpa's not in charge here.
27:17I don't care.
27:19Stop a minute.
27:20No, I ain't stopping.
27:21You don't give me orders.
27:23Why not?
27:23Because you don't.
27:24You ask.
27:25You don't order somebody.
27:26You ask.
27:27Have some respect for people.
27:28I think you should show me a little respect.
27:30You told me to go haul dirt.
27:32Is that how you treat somebody?
27:33You don't, hey.
27:34You don't tell me how to do mine.
27:35I did not.
27:36I have not told you how to do your job one time this whole year.
27:40I have not told you one time.
27:43Parker.
27:44Not once.
27:45You are approaching this man in the wrong way.
27:54We're up here to make money, and we're up here to run the plan.
27:57You won't make money if you change the hellhole.
28:04Parker is still battling to gain the crew's respect when disaster strikes.
28:09This isn't going to do me any good.
28:12Oh, this is going to be fun.
28:14Mining authorities threaten to shut him down for good.
28:19The mine needed to be regulated by the federal government, and it had been operating without
28:24that regulation for the 23 years.
28:29Of course it's my fault.
28:31I'm in charge.
28:33The crew look to Parker to save their season.
28:37So this should have a knee board.
28:38Parker hires a specialist to train him in mine safety, brings his sight.
28:44up to code, and within just 24 hours, has the inspector back for a make-or-break verdict.
28:52Will you be able to terminate the stop work order?
28:57Yeah.
28:57Today?
28:58Mm-hmm.
28:58We're good to go.
28:59Yes.
28:59Okay.
29:00Thank you for your time.
29:01We made it.
29:05It's over.
29:06All right.
29:06Let's go, boys.
29:10I was going to wait until later to run the plant, but I figured we just needed to start getting
29:16some dirt moved.
29:17Parker's leadership takes his crew from shutdown.
29:21We haven't had that much gold in the pan in all summer.
29:23To one of the most productive days of their season.
29:26It is addictive.
29:27After you see the results of the gold come out of the material, it makes it all worth it.
29:32I think it makes us a good team.
29:36After his rough start, the teenager's hard work, with gold to show for it, finally proves
29:43to his crew he can be a leader, scoring him four points.
29:49Rick has years of experience leading crews as a foreman before stepping up to be a mine
29:55boss.
29:56Terry, I'm going to put you in the excavator loading the trucks.
29:59I'm going to put you guys all in trucks.
30:00We'll get you in those machines, get you comfortable, and no pressure, but in about an hour, let's
30:04be cranking full tilt.
30:05And he gambles on hiring a crew of loyal, but inexperienced friends.
30:11Hey, water all over.
30:13And he aims to turn into a first-rate mining team.
30:17School of hard knocks, baby.
30:18Oh, we've got to learn a curve to get ahead of here.
30:20There's no doubt about that.
30:21I've been instructed we want to get the load as far over as we can.
30:27You're good.
30:28Go ahead and dump.
30:35Oh, boy.
30:37Holy f***.
30:41Ryan, you all right?
30:44As soon as I pulled away, it caved in.
30:46F***.
30:47F***.
30:48She's just going to f***ing whip this thing over.
30:51You're clear.
30:52Keep her.
30:53Keep going.
31:00All right, pull her out of there, Ryan.
31:02Don't hit that f***ing tailgate.
31:05Can you guys all come over here real quick?
31:06Let's have a quick talk.
31:11Yo.
31:13What's up?
31:15Look, I love you guys.
31:16You've always had my f***ing back.
31:17I don't want to b***h at you, but, man, we've got to tighten up, man.
31:21Ryan, I know you flipped a rock truck.
31:23If we keep doing, making those mistakes, I mean, it's going to kill us.
31:27Right?
31:27You got it.
31:29All right.
31:29All right, let's get back to it, buddy.
31:31All right.
31:33After his near miss in a rock truck...
31:35It's going to take me a while to get the hang of doing this.
31:38...Rick moves greenhorn Ryan to operating a loader,
31:42clearing the tailings at the plant.
31:44And he's wandering out into the fine tailings in front of a plant.
31:48It's been way too long.
31:52Not even making a dip.
31:54Really getting sick of dealing with this.
31:55It's too f***ing much right now.
32:00F***.
32:01Just hit the sluice box.
32:03F*** this, man.
32:04F***.
32:14F***.
32:15I just hit the sluice box.
32:18F*** this, man.
32:19F***.
32:22In the clash of the rookie mind bosses,
32:26Rick Ness needs to step up and prove himself
32:29in the leadership round.
32:31What's up, Ryan?
32:37I'm just getting a little overwhelmed here.
32:39Greenhorn Ryan is struggling to keep up
32:42with the plant's mounting tailings.
32:44Maybe I'll swap out with you for a minute,
32:46see if I can find anything different to do
32:48or find a rhythm or something.
32:52Hopefully Rick can give me an idea
32:54how to keep ahead of everything,
32:56figure something out to make this work.
32:57I mean, this is about as important as it gets.
33:01All of our gold's coming out of that wash plant,
33:03so you've got to take care of it.
33:05You've got to run it right.
33:07Rick shows Ryan a new method,
33:10driving into the tailings,
33:12grabbing a scoop,
33:14and backing straight out
33:15instead of turning around,
33:18cutting in half the time Ryan took.
33:21I think that's the trick.
33:23And I think that's probably where I'll make up my time.
33:25Woo!
33:27Loading the plant!
33:28Yeah!
33:28Woo!
33:29Woo!
33:35Sounds to me like you're having
33:36the time of your life up in here.
33:39Well, and you're moving them differently than I was.
33:42Yeah.
33:42And I can see where that's going to save time.
33:44You know what?
33:45I got us a little bit ahead here.
33:46I think I'll be okay.
33:48Yeah.
33:49I know you will, Ryan.
33:51Good luck, buddy!
33:52Rick leads his inexperienced crew by example
33:57and begins to mold them into a working team,
34:01giving him the full five points.
34:05At the end of the leadership round,
34:08Kevin drops down the leaderboard
34:10while Rick claws his way back to first alongside Parker.
34:14Heading into the final round,
34:18it's anyone's game
34:19as the rookie bosses battle to the end of the season
34:23and try to hit their first-year gold targets.
34:28We're on our final big push to get to 1,000 ounces.
34:31With just days of sluicing left,
34:35Kevin is desperate to hit his 1,000-ounce gold.
34:38He hires new crew
34:40and pushes his plant to the limit.
34:43The push is on.
34:44So after everything that we've faced this year,
34:46I'd be pretty bummed out
34:47if we don't hit our 1,000-ounce target, you know?
34:58Oh, f***!
35:02F***!
35:03Bloody belt's broke.
35:05The feeder belt.
35:06F***!
35:06F***!
35:07F***!
35:07Okay, for the moment we...
35:08The belt that transports dirt
35:11from the upper feeder
35:12to the main conveyor belt
35:14has ripped in two,
35:16a potential season-ender.
35:19Oh, no.
35:20She's f***!
35:22My rough battle plan
35:23is that we'll hook up with the 220,
35:26use that to yard it out,
35:29then pick it up with the 480
35:32to pull it all the way out,
35:33and then we can swing it
35:34and set it down on that side.
35:35Refusing to give up,
35:37Kevin races to replace the entire belt
35:40before winter strikes.
35:42I'm going to hook up our 4-point sling
35:44to the frame of this conveyor,
35:47and then hopefully he can take the weight.
35:51Brandon, you can see what you're doing
35:53to pull it out.
35:53Yeah, I barely touched the joysticks.
36:03I let them go,
36:03and it kept sliding.
36:04So sorry about that.
36:07Yay!
36:09Beautiful!
36:11There we go.
36:14We're just sliding the belt up.
36:16Golden pony boy.
36:30Say, that's a success right there.
36:31I'm going to give it a push.
36:32I'm going to give it a push.
36:34I'm going to give it a push.
36:35I'm going to give it a push.
36:36I'm going to give it a push.
36:37I'm going to give it a push.
36:38I'm going to give it a push.
36:38Woo!
36:39Woo!
36:39School like butter.
36:41Atta boy, boss!
36:44All right.
36:45Need some cake.
36:47That went really well,
36:49so we'll get back running.
36:51I'll run hard
36:52till we get snowed out.
36:55Got 1,000 ounces somehow.
36:56Four days later.
37:00Hi, guys.
37:02So everybody's bringing in gold.
37:04Kevin's final gold
37:06is cleaned and ready to weigh.
37:08Let's see what we got.
37:09I'm very curious
37:10to see what you guys got out of it.
37:11We ain't pretty f***ing high.
37:13That's why we needed to break even.
37:16Kevin has three weeks
37:18worth of sluicing to weigh.
37:20He needs 320 ounces
37:22to hit his 1,000-ounce goal.
37:26Let's follow it, guys.
37:2810, 20, 40, 50, 80, 90.
37:32180, 190, 200, 250, 260,
37:36360, 370, 375.80.
37:42Oh, my f***.
37:43It's such a relief.
37:44I can finally pay everyone off.
37:46All right.
37:46How much does that make, Faith?
37:481,056.57.
37:51So that's pretty damn nice.
37:53For your first year, Kevin,
37:55is a f***ing lot better
37:56than most of them do.
37:58And then come just by ourselves.
38:00Like, you guys have helped us out.
38:01That's a great deal.
38:02You know, everybody needs
38:04a little bit of boost.
38:05Everybody needs a little bit
38:06of help here and there.
38:10Thanks to his final push,
38:13Kevin passes his make-or-break
38:15rookie mind boss gold,
38:17giving him five points
38:19in the final round,
38:20pushing him into a late lead.
38:23But the rookie mind boss race
38:26is far from over.
38:28Parker and Rick
38:29still have to battle to the end
38:31and weigh their gold
38:33to lock in their final points.
38:35That's not over yet.
38:36Can a guy risk it all
38:42in America anymore?
38:43On the hunt for gold rush's
38:44best-ever rookie mind boss,
38:47some new bosses...
38:49Whoa.
38:49Whoa.
38:50That's gold.
38:51It's a rock, okay?
38:52False alarm.
38:53Just didn't make the cut.
38:55Here it is.
38:56There's 14.64 ounces here.
39:00My guys are like,
39:01they think I've been gold mining
39:02my whole life or something.
39:03Todd Hoffman is only beaten
39:06to rock bottom by Fred Lewis.
39:09That puts our total at 6.39,
39:12which is honestly embarrassing.
39:20I think we kind of take it
39:22as a challenge to beat each other.
39:24It's crunch time
39:25in the rookie mind boss competition.
39:28Right now, the name of the game is gold.
39:29With points up for grabs,
39:31the bosses are making
39:33a final push
39:34to hit their first-year gold targets.
39:38After success,
39:39at his final gold way,
39:41Kevin is in the lead.
39:44Next up, Parker.
39:47His first-year goal
39:49is to keep the family mine afloat
39:51by banking 75 ounces.
39:5333 ounces.
39:5533 ounces.
39:59It looks like a lot of gold,
40:01but we spent a lot of money
40:02to get it.
40:06Parker's flunked his freshman year
40:09as a mine boss.
40:10Pretty sad.
40:11Pretty sad day.
40:11But isn't giving up
40:14on his goal of keeping
40:16the family mine in business.
40:18What we'll do is knock this hill out.
40:21Take that slope,
40:22at this slope,
40:23all the way on down
40:24to the bend.
40:26Smith Creek,
40:27it's kind of an all-or-nothing
40:29deal for the whole mine.
40:31Parker decides to run tests
40:32on Smith Creek,
40:34the only virgin ground
40:36at Big Nugget,
40:37in the hope it will deliver
40:39enough gold
40:40to convince his dad
40:41and grandpa
40:42to fund his dream
40:44of another season mining.
40:47I'm nervous.
40:48This is the last test.
40:50This afternoon,
40:51I'm going to talk
40:51to my dad and grandpa
40:52about Smith Creek.
40:54And you know,
40:55if there's nothing
40:55in this dirt,
40:56I don't know what
40:57the mine will do.
40:59I'm scared.
41:14Done.
41:22Beautiful.
41:23We don't see a thing yet.
41:27It doesn't look like
41:28there's anything in it.
41:32Here's a little bit.
41:34Oh, there's quite a bit in here.
41:37What the ?
41:38Actually, something in here.
41:41It's weird.
41:42This is the little sluice
41:45that's fed out of the jig.
41:50Wow.
41:57There's quite a bit in here.
41:59Gary.
42:00That's...
42:01Wow.
42:03See, that's, like,
42:04not bad at all.
42:05That's not bad at all.
42:12This is what we got
42:13off the pan this morning.
42:14Hmm.
42:15And not much, was it?
42:17And then I went down
42:18below the jig,
42:19and that's what we got
42:21out of the little sluice.
42:23That's pretty nice.
42:24That's what you dug out
42:26of the hole?
42:27Yeah, a 45-minute test
42:29out of Smith Creek.
42:30That's really encouraging.
42:32Smith Creek will have
42:33bigger gold than that.
42:34Are you saying you want
42:37to fund the mine next year?
42:38Uh, I'm, uh,
42:40willing to give it a try.
42:42I'll fund it for 50%
42:44of the gold
42:44we get out of it.
42:47I'll take it.
42:49I come out here
42:50and give it everything
42:52I've got.
42:52But I feel like
42:54I've done my job.
42:57Parker banks
42:59just half of his gold,
43:01but convinces his grandpa
43:02to give him another shot,
43:04earning him three points,
43:07enough to edge him
43:08to the top
43:09of the leaderboard.
43:11Parker's dropped points
43:13give Rick Ness
43:14a chance to snatch victory.
43:17We're so close
43:18to our target.
43:19I just don't know
43:20what to do anymore.
43:20I mean, we've exhausted
43:21all the fog ground.
43:23But with just days
43:24of sluicing left,
43:26Rick faces catastrophe.
43:28He's run out of pay dirt
43:30and is shut down,
43:3227 ounces short
43:34of his 1,000 ounce gold.
43:37To find a solution,
43:39Rick calls in his dad,
43:40Rick Sr.
43:42Where that pile of overburden is,
43:43that's where the bedrock
43:44came up,
43:45and that's where
43:46all the best drill holes were,
43:47and it is where
43:48we did our best gold.
43:50You're up against time,
43:51so I guess
43:51what's the best option
43:53for what we got left
43:54in time.
43:56Yeah,
43:56let's do it.
43:58I'll jump on that D9
43:59and give it my best shot.
44:00Rick's last gasp gamble
44:03is to open a small extension
44:05to his mind-out cut.
44:07But it's frozen
44:08and needs to be ripped
44:10to get to the pay dirt.
44:12And all he's got
44:13is a small D9 dozer.
44:16We don't have enough time
44:18left here to do much,
44:19but we've got to give it.
44:20Rick promised me
44:21it was going to do
44:21the 1,000 ounces.
44:30Oh, that ain't good.
44:33It's overheating really bad.
44:34The radiator's got a hole
44:37in it somewhere.
44:39the bat or what?
44:40You see where it pissed it
44:41all out on the blade
44:42right there?
44:43Yeah.
44:43The D9's radiator
44:45has blown,
44:46putting it down
44:47for the season.
44:48What I was thinking was,
44:49you know,
44:49I don't know,
44:49I mean,
44:50we used Seamus' 475
44:51for the small area
44:52we're trying to get here.
44:53I think that machine
44:54would do it.
44:55We've got to make
44:56the decision, I guess.
44:57I mean,
44:57that's up to you
44:58what you want to do.
44:59I don't really want
45:00to pay $6,000
45:01for that 475.
45:03You've got to spend
45:03money to make money.
45:04Rick's only option
45:06is to up the ante
45:07and rent the monster
45:09475 dozer
45:11he used
45:12at the start
45:13of the season.
45:13Oh, that's really
45:14obvious, the difference.
45:16Just the sheer power of it.
45:18So I'm going to lay down
45:18some rips here.
45:19It's going to take me
45:20probably about an hour
45:21to get this thing ripped up,
45:22and then we'll push
45:23it all off again.
45:27Terry, you want to get
45:28yourself and the trucks
45:29down here?
45:30All right, buddy.
45:31Within three hours,
45:32the cut is ripped.
45:34This is it, guys.
45:36This is our roll
45:38of the dice.
45:40Pay dirt
45:40pulled to the plant.
45:42Let's fire up
45:43dirt rentals.
45:44And desperate for gold,
45:46Rick starts sluicing.
45:49I want to make sure
45:50we get all the dirt
45:51run through the plant.
45:52Pay dirt's still frozen
45:53and full of chunks,
45:54but we don't even give a shit.
45:55We're going to run it anyways.
45:56Three days later,
45:59Rick's managed to sluice
46:00his Hail Mary cut
46:02and is ready
46:02for his final gold way.
46:05Oh!
46:06Oh, yeah!
46:08About time, Rick.
46:09Can you believe
46:09it's been six months?
46:10So, Carla,
46:11where did we end up with
46:12on the last gold way?
46:14We're at 973.
46:15Rick needs 27 ounces
46:17to hit his 1,000-ounce gold.
46:20Might be in that jar.
46:22I think it's time
46:22to find out.
46:28That's 20.
46:30Looking good.
46:31Yeah.
46:33Those are 27 ounces.
46:38There's another
46:39$100.
46:40Yeah!
46:44The final gold
46:45weigh 132.49 ounces.
46:48You know what that means?
46:49Oh, we're over 1,100.
46:50Nice.
46:5111.05.
46:53Blue by it.
46:54Yeah!
46:55That's awesome!
46:57Yeah!
46:58Yeah!
46:58Are you glad
46:59we stuck around now?
47:00Yeah!
47:00Woo!
47:01That's awesome!
47:03Yeah!
47:03Football huddle!
47:05Yeah!
47:05Rick blasts past his season goal
47:13by over 100 ounces,
47:16giving him the max
47:17five points.
47:19At the end
47:20of the rookie
47:21mind boss showdown,
47:23there's only one winner.
47:27Ray!
47:28Rick Ness
47:29is crowned the best
47:31first-year mind boss.
47:33Yeah, Rick!
47:33Yeah!
47:33Yeah!
47:34You guys are lunatics.
47:40There were so many reasons
47:41for that first season
47:43to cause me
47:44to lose everything,
47:45but that didn't happen.
47:47I'm on such a high,
47:48like, you know,
47:49the first season
47:50on my own
47:50was a success.
47:51one thing I've ever loved
47:56to come.
47:58I think that's legal
47:59that can help you
48:00through theérie
48:00because of their
48:01and the probably
48:01that doesn't have
48:01and it's the last
48:02one
48:03in the past season,
48:04I think it's one
48:04to say in the past
48:05over 100 Haas,
48:06and I've said to advise you
48:07and to say you
48:08to determine why
48:09people Walen
