00:00This is Brian. He likes to get to know a woman before she gets to know him.
00:09We showed him videotapes of these three single women, and he picked one as his date.
00:13Which one did he choose? Which one will our audience choose?
00:16And this is Madeline, who likes her men comfortable in the boardroom, ballroom, and barroom.
00:21Which one of these men did she choose? Which one will our audience choose?
00:25Today on Love Connection, you'll find out who they picked, who the audience picks, and everything that happened on their dates.
00:31Now here to tell us more about Love Connection is our host, Chuck Woolery.
00:40Thank you, everybody. Thank you very much. Welcome to the show.
00:44You know, there are more than 60 million single adults in the United States, so here on Love Connection, we've got a new way for singles to meet.
00:55This is a library of hundreds of attractive and available single people. We select some of those singles, and we show them three videotapes.
01:02Now, after they watch the tapes, they choose the one that they're most attracted to and go out on a date.
01:06Then they come here, and they tell us what happened on their date.
01:09So to begin with, let's meet a man who selected a date from our video library.
01:13He's from Phoenix, Arizona. He's a sports nut, and he doesn't like women with short fingernails.
01:20Please welcome Brian Tracy.
01:21You don't like women with short fingernails?
01:33No, short fingers in general. The nails have a lot to do with it.
01:36Anything else? What else do you look for?
01:38Well, I try to take the whole picture and look at the whole thing.
01:42I see. Now, you're into sports, you say.
01:43Yes, I am.
01:44Do you ever date women who are not into sports?
01:45I do. Usually, if they see my point of view on sports and see the enthusiasm, they usually catch on.
01:52They catch on and do them with you, huh?
01:53Yeah.
01:53All right, good.
01:54Now that we know a little bit more about you, Brian, based on his preferences, he was shown videotapes and questionnaires of three women.
02:03Now, we're going to show you a portion of the tapes that he saw.
02:05And you in the audience and you at home, too, watch very closely because we're going to ask you to pick the woman that is best for Brian, okay?
02:13First, there was Andrea.
02:14Now, she was raised in a small town in Pennsylvania, and her father gave her some advice before she moved to Los Angeles.
02:19And here's what I was.
02:20Oh, I was a karate instructor, and that really wasn't my choice.
02:25My father said, you're going to live out in Los Angeles.
02:27You're going to learn this.
02:28My father has karate school.
02:30He told me, you're going to grow up to be beautiful, so I want you to be able to take care of yourself.
02:36Okay, next there was Paula.
02:37Now, she was raised in Texas.
02:39She says she's not easy to please, and she follows the advice her mother gave her.
02:43I'm perfectly happy with that, but I would like to have someone that I can date or have a partner in many senses, a partner of crime or whatever.
02:51My mom always said, keep busy.
02:53It keeps you out of trouble.
02:54Well, I do that.
02:55It does keep me out of trouble, but it keeps me out of a lot of other things, too.
03:00Okay, finally, you watched Diane.
03:02Now, she's from Denver.
03:03She likes swimming, tennis, and jogging, and she thinks men are fickle.
03:07Okay?
03:07No, I just think people don't want to commit right now, men and women, but mostly men, because they see how many beautiful women there are around here.
03:16And if they meet one, and they go to their bathroom, on their way to the bathroom, they're going to meet another one prettier than the last one they just met at the bar.
03:23And they'll forget the last one they met.
03:25That always happens to me.
03:26Now, Brian picked one of these women as his date, and before he tells us who it was, let's take a look at all three of them again, okay?
03:34First, there was Andrea.
03:36She's a 24-year-old ambulance driver.
03:38And there's Paula, a 23-year-old executive assistant.
03:41And finally, Diane, a 25-year-old secretary.
03:45Okay, audience, it's time to put your voting machines into operation here.
03:48You've met Brian.
03:48You've seen his choices.
03:50Who do you think's the best lady for Brian?
03:52Here in the studio and you at home, too.
03:53Please make your choice right now, okay?
03:55We're going to take a break.
03:56When we come back, we're going to find out who the audience chose, who Brian chose, and all about his date.
04:00We'll be right back in a minute.
04:08In a little while, we're going to find out who the audience picked, but right now, we're going to ask Brian who he selected.
04:13Who'd you select?
04:13I selected Paula.
04:14Paula?
04:15Mm-hmm.
04:15Okay, now, in Love Connection, we get both sides of the story.
04:18We ask our couples not to speak to each other after their date, and we also keep them apart so they'll be less inhibited about telling their story.
04:25Now, Paula's backstage, so let's say hello to Paula Smith.
04:27Hi, Paula.
04:29Hi.
04:30How are you, hon?
04:31It's fine.
04:32I want to talk to you in just a minute.
04:33Okay.
04:33Let me ask Brian here, why did you choose her?
04:36Other than she's very pretty, obviously.
04:37Well, that helped a lot, but she was the most enthusiastic, most outgoing that I found.
04:41I see.
04:42Someone I like to be around.
04:43Okay.
04:44But, Brian.
04:44Brian, can I say something?
04:46Certainly.
04:46I've got short nails.
04:47That's okay.
04:49That's okay.
04:49There's an exception to every rule.
04:51There is.
04:52Yeah.
04:52Paula, what was your first impression of Brian now?
04:54Well, I was surprised when I first saw him, but now he even looks better than when I first saw him.
05:06All right.
05:06Can't beat that.
05:07What happened on your date, Brian?
05:08She was from Texas, and she hadn't been to Mexico.
05:10She lived real close to the border.
05:11So, we decided to go down to Rosarita Beach in Ensenada for the day.
05:14Oh, that's great down there.
05:15Oh, it's beautiful.
05:15Oh, it's terrific.
05:16Yeah.
05:16So, she came over, and we left about 9 o'clock, and we were on the road for about three and
05:20a half, four hours, and got into Rosarita Beach and stopped and had four or five lobsters
05:25together.
05:26Oh, really?
05:27Sure.
05:27A couple, a few beers.
05:28We had some tequila.
05:29How did, Paula?
05:30Yeah.
05:31How did it go for you so far?
05:33Well, it was exactly what we did.
05:34We went down to Mexico for the first time crossing the border.
05:38It was very exciting.
05:39Was it exciting for you, really?
05:40It really was.
05:42It was very different with the streets and the highways and not knowing where we were
05:45going.
05:46We got lost about four or five times just in one two-mile section, I believe.
05:50But mainly what was nice about the afternoon was that we spent the afternoon watching the
05:56sun go down.
05:57Oh, nice.
05:57Nice.
05:58Right on into the evening.
06:00Right on into the evening.
06:00Yeah.
06:00What happened next?
06:01It was a long drive back, and we were very close to my house, and I decided, well, maybe
06:06we should stop and have some coffee.
06:08But before we got there, we got stopped by the police.
06:10Oh, my gosh.
06:11Yeah.
06:11This had to be safe.
06:12Yeah.
06:12Well, Paula had fallen asleep in my lap, and we pulled over to the side of the road, and
06:18she popped up, and the police came over and said, why are you weaving so much?
06:21And I said, well, we've been driving from Mexico.
06:23And he understood, gave me a warning.
06:26He said, listen, can you keep your mind on your driving, please?
06:30So we got back to the house and had some coffee, and she went on her way.
06:37Did she ever kiss or anything?
06:39Yes.
06:39Yes, you did.
06:40Oh, we did.
06:41Right when we were laying on the beach, he was catching some sun, and I was just sort
06:46of there.
06:46He had changed into his bathing suit, and I stayed dressed.
06:49And he leaned over and gave me a very nice kiss.
06:54Good.
06:55Oh, no.
06:57How'd the date end?
06:58The date ended very nice.
07:00We decided that we had a lot more in common than we thought we did.
07:04Yeah.
07:04It was a long date.
07:06It was a long date.
07:07Almost 18 hours, and we had a few cups of coffee and a few strawberries, and...
07:12It sounded like you had a good time.
07:13It was a great time.
07:14Yeah, okay.
07:14Now, let's see who the audience picked for you, okay?
07:16All right.
07:19Paula.
07:20All right.
07:21You were right.
07:23All right.
07:24Now, the audience picked Paula.
07:29Of course, on Love Connections, we pay for the tab on the first date, and if you'd go
07:32with who the audience picks, we'll pick up the tab for the second date.
07:36You want to take Paula out again?
07:37I'd love to.
07:37I bet you would.
07:39Paula?
07:39Yes?
07:40Are you up for this?
07:41I think I'm up for it.
07:42Well, come on out and join us.
07:50Thank you, Dave.
07:50Come on over and sit down and join us on the couch.
07:55All right.
07:56Well, you guys sound like you had a terrific time.
07:58We did.
07:59Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun.
08:01Do you have any plans for your second date?
08:02You want to figure out what you're going to do?
08:03Going back to Mexico.
08:04Back to Mexico.
08:05More tequila.
08:06Are you ready for that, Rosarita Beach?
08:07Sure.
08:08In the fall.
08:09In the fall.
08:09I think it should be beautiful.
08:11Might as well, yeah.
08:12Have a nice gift for both of you.
08:13Thank you very much for being on Love Connection.
08:15We appreciate it.
08:16We're going to come back with another couple in just a minute, so hang on there.
08:19Thanks.
08:19Okay, we're back.
08:32This time, we're going to meet a woman who chose a date from our video library.
08:36She's from New York City.
08:37She loves rock and roll and says she'll try anything that isn't too illegal.
08:40Please welcome Madeline Gray.
08:42Madeline.
08:43Hi, Madeline.
08:46Hi, thank you.
08:47Hello.
08:48Good stuff.
08:50Anything that isn't too illegal, she says.
08:53Not too illegal.
08:53What isn't too illegal, Madeline?
08:54Well, you know what they say.
08:55Everything in life that's fun is illegal, immoral, or fattening.
08:59So if those are your choices, I never do anything immoral.
09:02I never want to get fat, so the only thing left is illegal.
09:07What's the first question when you want a man to get to know you?
09:11What are you asking?
09:13What his favorite room is.
09:15Oh, really?
09:15If he says the kitchen, that's it.
09:16I don't cook.
09:19Do you ever want to get married, do you think?
09:23Do I ever want?
09:23I think eventually, yes, because in heart.
09:27You've never been married before?
09:28Never.
09:28Uh-uh.
09:29So you're not ready yet right now?
09:31No, not now.
09:32What would it take?
09:33At least I don't think so.
09:34My mother and my father think I should have been ready 10 years ago.
09:38What would it take?
09:38Well, basically, I'm very old-fashioned in my heart.
09:43I would want to be loyal to the person I was married to,
09:47and I have never met anybody I felt I could be loyal to.
09:51Oh, I see.
09:52It's a matter of being faithful.
09:54Yeah, yeah.
09:55Now that we know a little bit more about you,
09:57we're going to show our audience a portion of the tapes that Madeline saw,
10:00so watch closely because you're going to get to vote again, okay?
10:02First, there was Alan.
10:04He feels at home in jeans or in a tuxedo,
10:06and he likes to go on blind dates.
10:09When I was actively dating, I would say there was at least one per month,
10:13and I would look forward more to the blind dates than to the gals I already knew.
10:16Blind dates, to me, are very interesting.
10:18I take them as a challenge.
10:20I look forward to blind dates.
10:22Never know what's going to be behind that door,
10:24and they don't know what's going to be in front of it.
10:27Now pay close attention because we have another Alan.
10:29He says he likes to participate rather than observe it,
10:33and here's what he did one time to prove it.
10:36Many years ago, my wife and I at the time
10:37just decided we didn't like our jobs,
10:40and we quit our jobs, rented out our house,
10:41and took off across the South Pacific for six months.
10:45I'm not attracted to somebody that wants to sit home
10:47and watch television all day and all night
10:49and tell me what happened on the soap operas.
10:51I have no fascination as far as that goes.
10:54Okay, and finally there was Mark.
10:55Now he says he meets most of his dates at work,
10:58and here's one that he remembers very well.
11:00Nothing really embarrasses me.
11:01I remember one time I was in a restaurant with a date,
11:03and we were sitting in a booth where you sit across from each other,
11:07and she asked if I would get mad if anyone ever threw something at me,
11:12like an article of food, and I said, I don't think so,
11:14and she threw a piece of boysenberry pie straight across the table at me,
11:18and I ducked, and it hit the guy behind me in the back of the head.
11:21And the restaurant went crazy,
11:23and it was our second date,
11:25and she felt that if I had pie all over me,
11:28that I would go back to her house and change my clothes.
11:31Oh, that's funny.
11:32Now before we find out who Madeline chose as her date,
11:34let's see all three men once more, okay?
11:36And here they are.
11:37Now first there was Alan.
11:38He's a 32-year-old speech pathologist.
11:40And there's the other Alan.
11:42He's a salesman.
11:43He's also 32.
11:44Finally, Mark.
11:45He's a 33-year-old bartender.
11:48Okay, audience, it's time to vote again.
11:50Now who do you think's the best man for Madeline?
11:51Here in the studio and at home, too.
11:53Please make your choice right now, okay?
11:55We're going to find out who the audience chose in just a little bit,
11:57but let's find out who Madeline chose.
11:58Who did you select?
11:59I selected Alan, the speech pathologist.
12:02Alan, the speech pathologist.
12:04Yeah.
12:07One left connection.
12:08We always hear both sides of the story.
12:10Alan's backstage, so let's welcome Alan Roden.
12:13Hi, Alan.
12:13Hi, Captain Hawaii.
12:14Good.
12:15Hi, Alan.
12:16Hi, Maddie.
12:16Hi.
12:17We're both going to come back and talk to you in just a minute, Alan.
12:20Why did you pick Alan?
12:21I knew him.
12:22You didn't know him, really?
12:23Well, it was really funny.
12:24I had seen Alan.
12:26Alan and I had been at several parties together.
12:28You're kidding.
12:29No, no, no.
12:29I'm not kidding.
12:30Okay, folks, I've got to tell you something.
12:31I did not know this.
12:33Now, this is news to me.
12:34It had to be a shock when you sat down and you saw his tape.
12:36I was hysterical.
12:37It was very funny.
12:37We had been to several parties together, several New Year's Eve parties together.
12:41We had several common...
12:42We have common friends.
12:44I was even at his...
12:45He's smiling.
12:46I was even at his last birthday party.
12:48Oh, gee.
12:49I was.
12:50But, you know, in all this time, we never spoke to each other.
12:52We just kind of knew each other from across a crowded room.
12:55What did you think of him?
12:55I mean, you obviously knew who he was.
12:57Well, I thought he was really good-looking and attractive, except that I always felt that
13:01he had a value judgment about me.
13:04And I...
13:05Oh, really?
13:05What was the value judgment you thought he had about you?
13:07Tell the truth.
13:08Come on.
13:08Well, I always felt that he thought I was a sophisticated snob.
13:13Really?
13:13Yeah.
13:14She's right, Chuck.
13:15Did you think that?
13:16She's absolutely right, and I was never so wrong in my whole entire life.
13:21All right!
13:22Lots of people have made that mistake.
13:24It's true.
13:24You're not a sophisticated snob at all.
13:26No, I'm very warm, actually.
13:27Chuck, she's sophisticated.
13:28Did you know...
13:29She's sophisticated, but definitely not a snob.
13:31Not a snob.
13:31I had always felt that he perceived that about me, and who wants to go out with someone
13:35where you have to cut through a whole perception?
13:36Sure, yeah.
13:37You don't get to be yourself.
13:38So, you finally...
13:39You got to go out anyway.
13:40So, well, when I saw him up there, I thought to myself, this is hysterical.
13:43This is a great line, huh?
13:43I laughed.
13:44I thought, this is really funny.
13:45Okay, now we finally have to get together and go out.
13:48And, of course, I knew him, and it would make it...
13:50I knew he wasn't going to be a killer.
13:51I mean, you know...
13:52What happened on your date?
13:53I took him for new experiences.
13:55I took him to a New Wave Thai food restaurant.
13:58We had a wonderful time.
13:59We had an extremely fine time.
14:02It was so refreshing, Chuck, to be with someone that I was able to
14:07discuss things with.
14:08We were talking about so many very different topics, from funny things to intellectual things
14:12to serious things to not-so-serious things.
14:15So, what happened next?
14:16Well, first of all, he was a perfect gentleman.
14:18He came with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
14:20Oh, that's nice.
14:20Yeah, and he kept trying to pay for every...
14:22I mean, he had this...
14:23Of course, you had the money, right?
14:25I had the money, I should have...
14:26I had an open mind to the whole date.
14:28I decided after I was going to go, I'm going to be open, best foot forward, and I would
14:33really try to have a good time.
14:35And it was wonderful.
14:37Great.
14:37What did you do, Dan?
14:38I mean, how did it end?
14:39Did you go...
14:39He insisted upon seeing me to my door and turning the key, et cetera.
14:43It's a perfect gentleman.
14:45Did he kiss you?
14:46I really tried.
14:46It wasn't hard.
14:47It wasn't difficult.
14:48It wasn't work.
14:49It wasn't tedious.
14:50It wasn't a chore.
14:50It was my absolute pleasure.
14:52And that's exactly what I wanted to do for Madeline.
14:54Did you kiss her?
14:55Yeah.
14:56It was a very polite little pet.
14:58Good night.
14:59Would you really like to kiss her real good?
15:01I sure would.
15:03I just thought I'd ask.
15:05Curiosity is killing me.
15:06I want to find out who the audience selected.
15:08Me too.
15:10I'll put you, Alan.
15:11It is 66%.
15:13All right.
15:15All right, we're going to pick up the tab for this one.
15:17If you all want to go out again, you want to do that?
15:18Yeah, Alan, you up for this?
15:20I certainly am.
15:21Come on out and join us.
15:23That's it.
15:27Hello.
15:31Well, they haven't seen each other since their date, right?
15:33Come on over and sit down.
15:35You guys have anything that you would like to say to each other
15:38since you haven't seen each other since your date?
15:39It's been a while, right?
15:40Yeah, hi.
15:41How are you?
15:41I'm great.
15:42How are you?
15:42Yeah, we stayed just by the rule book
15:44because we couldn't keep in touch until now.
15:46We couldn't speak.
15:46We couldn't do anything.
15:47And since then, I found out that we come from the same neighborhood,
15:50about 10 blocks away from each other.
15:52Is it graphically compatible?
15:53Brooklyn at one of the places.
15:54Yeah, Brooklyn, New York.
15:54You're welcome.
15:55Listen, we have a nice gift for both of you.
15:56I want to thank you very much for being on the show, okay?
15:58Pleasure.
15:59Listen, when we return,
16:00the audience is going to select a date for our next guest.
16:03We're going to come right back
16:04and find out how that works out in just a minute.
16:05We will.
16:11Our next guest was shown videotapes of three men,
16:14and rather than choose her own date,
16:16she's agreed to let our audience decide
16:18who she should go out with.
16:19So let's meet her now, okay?
16:21She's from Wabash, Indiana.
16:22She likes to travel, have intelligent discussions,
16:25lounge in the sun, and spend money.
16:27Please welcome Carolyn Costello.
16:30Carolyn?
16:30You look pretty.
16:35Thank you very much.
16:36Welcome.
16:38Carolyn?
16:39Yes.
16:40Are you very concerned with physical appearance?
16:42Oh, definitely.
16:43Are you?
16:43Oh, definitely.
16:44Very important.
16:45You have to have that charisma or chemistry or something
16:48or it's just ain't going to work.
16:50What's your idea of good looking?
16:52Well, starting at about six foot and up.
16:56Taller blonde doesn't make any difference.
16:58Trim, no fat.
17:00All right?
17:00No.
17:01Sounds like she's discussing meat.
17:04Yes.
17:04U.S. prime choice.
17:05U.S. prime choice.
17:06Thank you very much.
17:07Yes.
17:07All right.
17:08Here's the way this is going to work, okay?
17:10We're going to show you some portions of the videotapes
17:12that Carolyn saw, okay, folks?
17:14Now, remember, Carolyn has agreed to let the audience decide,
17:17our studio audience here decide,
17:18which one she should date.
17:20So watch very carefully.
17:21First, there's Don.
17:22Now, he was raised on the East Coast.
17:24He's a movie buff, and he says he's romantic.
17:26I think I'm very romantic,
17:31and I know that when I really care about somebody,
17:36I just love to surprise them with gifts
17:38and send them flowers and not just flowers,
17:42but things that maybe something they mentioned several months ago.
17:45Oh, gee, I've always wanted that print,
17:47or I've always wanted something like that,
17:49and then three months later have it show up at their work.
17:51And then there was Alan.
17:52He's from Los Angeles.
17:53He likes horseback riding and fishing,
17:55and he doesn't go out of his way to meet women.
17:58She's just going to have to fall into my lap, I guess,
18:00because I just don't like the games out there.
18:04You go into an average bar.
18:07You say hello, and they ask you what your sign is.
18:09For the most part, my two ex-wives were very independent
18:14when I first met them,
18:16and until we got married, it remained so.
18:19And after we tied the old knot,
18:24they became very dependent on me,
18:25and I hated the daddy image.
18:28Okay, finally, there was Dennis.
18:30Now, he was raised in California.
18:31He loves the outdoors,
18:32and he's very particular about who he dates.
18:35I don't date extensively.
18:40I do occasionally,
18:41but I am fairly particular about who I date,
18:44or I try to pick the right people.
18:45I've been known to pick a few wrong ones,
18:48too many wrong ones to be exact,
18:51but you live and learn, so they say.
18:54And I will call some...
18:56Well, you learn that sometimes
18:57you try to go by your instincts,
19:01and hopefully they'll be right.
19:03Now, before we let you choose,
19:04let's see all three men again, okay?
19:07First, there was Don.
19:08He's a 44-year-old media specialist.
19:11Then there's Alan.
19:12He's 39, and he's a physical therapist.
19:14Finally, there's Dennis,
19:16who is a fashion consultant.
19:18He's 37, and that's all three of them.
19:21Okay, it's decision time.
19:22Which one of these three men
19:23would be best for Carolyn?
19:24That's what we're going to ask you.
19:25Please make your choice now, audience, okay?
19:28I bet you're anxious to know, aren't you?
19:29I am.
19:29We know.
19:30I am.
19:30Dennis.
19:33Oh, thank God.
19:34You see?
19:40Have any idea what you're going to do on your date?
19:41Oh, well, I could think of a few things
19:43to do with Dennis.
19:47No, I think,
19:48since I'm a fairly conservative person,
19:51that dinner, candlelight dinner,
19:53something very romantic,
19:54something that we can talk
19:56and discuss and see how we are,
19:58and then on to bigger and better things.
20:01You'll come back and tell us about it.
20:03I certainly will.
