00:00Tonight, on the Curse of Oak Island.
00:03How does Lot 5 connect to the Money Pit?
00:05This may be that pathway.
00:07This could be the connection we've been looking for.
00:09Wow.
00:10I don't know what that is.
00:11This is very unusual.
00:12Everything suggests an earlier date, 1600s to 1700s.
00:15There we go.
00:16Look at this.
00:17That could easily be off a box or a chest.
00:19I agree.
00:20Where are we going to find what fell out of those chests?
00:22We're ready to go diving.
00:23Let's go diving.
00:24We wanted to see if there's treasure within Aladdin's cave.
00:27Oh, my god.
00:30There is an island in the North Atlantic where people
00:35have been looking for an incredible treasure
00:38for more than 200 years.
00:41So far, they have found a stone slab
00:44with strange symbols carved into it,
00:47man-made workings that date to medieval times,
00:51and a lead cross whose origin may be connected
00:54to the Knights Templar.
00:56To date, six men have died trying to solve the mystery.
01:02And according to legend, one more will have to die
01:07before the treasure can be found.
01:09Hey, Ken, welcome back.
01:26Good morning.
01:27We hope you'll tell us if it's a good morning.
01:29That's right.
01:30As a new day begins on Oak Island, brothers Rick
01:34and Marty Lagina and members of their team
01:37anxiously welcome underwater imaging expert Ken DeBoer
01:41to the fabled Money Pit area.
01:43Right now, we have a caisson into a cave.
01:46So the cave is about 150 feet deep.
01:48So the hope today is to get your ROV all the way to the bottom
01:51and just underneath the casing and to run that sonar first
01:54and see what's in it.
01:55Sure.
01:56And see if we can see a void or a tunnel heading towards
01:58the Money Pit area.
01:59Okay.
02:00And you have a camera as well on that, correct?
02:01That's right.
02:02Yeah, yeah.
02:03Let's just take a look-see and see what happens.
02:05Okay.
02:06One week ago, while representatives from ROC Equipment
02:10and SB Canada were excavating a seven-foot diameter steel shaft
02:15known as AC-1...
02:17I think we're breaking through the cave.
02:20Agreed.
02:21...at a depth of some 150 feet,
02:24a massive underground cavity was breached,
02:27which the team had previously dubbed Aladdin's Cave.
02:30It's almost like there's nothing there.
02:33Like a void.
02:34This mysterious cavern was first discovered
02:38during a core drilling operation back in 2022.
02:42Right now, we're looking into the cavity.
02:45And since then, the team has been astonished to obtain
02:48not only images of possible man-made artifacts
02:51and tunnels within it,
02:54but also high traces of precious metals in water samples.
03:00We'll pick the ROV up and then center it over the case line
03:03and then we'll go down from there.
03:04All right, copy that.
03:05All right.
03:06Now, after inserting a water clarifying compound
03:11known as flonculent several days ago,
03:14the team is hoping that Ken DeBoer's sonar-equipped
03:17remote-operated vehicle, or ROV,
03:21will confirm if Aladdin's Cave is a man-made chamber
03:25and just one it might contain.
03:28Josh, nice and easy.
03:32Got it?
03:33Yep.
03:34Beautiful.
03:35Okay, Rick.
03:36This is our main ROV camera.
03:37Yep.
03:38This will be our sonar screen.
03:39Hopefully, we'll see what we can do.
03:40We can do.
03:41Ready to go diving.
03:42Let's go diving.
03:43I hope that with the introduction of the ROV,
03:45that it will be able to tell us
03:46that there is treasure within Aladdin's Cave.
03:48For it to have treasure in it,
03:50or to prove that human beings were there,
03:53there has to be an intrigue.
03:54How many times have you seen this image of a camera going down?
03:57A lot.
03:58A lot.
03:59And you know what?
04:00Every time we believe.
04:01Yep.
04:02Every time we hope.
04:03Aladdin's Cave shouldn't be there geologically,
04:05which means it likely is human-induced.
04:06About 15 more feet.
04:07It's extremely intriguing.
04:08We have video of it.
04:09It is well and truly an anomaly.
04:10Touching water.
04:11Ooh.
04:12Ooh.
04:13Ooh.
04:14Ooh.
04:15Ooh.
04:16Ooh.
04:17Ooh.
04:18Ooh.
04:19Ooh.
04:20Ooh.
04:21Ooh.
04:22Ooh.
04:23Ooh.
04:24Ooh.
04:25Ooh.
04:26Ooh.
04:27Ooh.
04:28Ooh.
04:29Ooh.
04:30Ooh.
04:31Ooh.
04:32Ooh.
04:33Ooh.
04:34Ooh.
04:35Ooh.
04:36Ooh.
04:37That's murky, isn't it?
04:39Ooh, yeah.
04:4010 centimeters into the water.
04:45Ouch.
04:46Ooh.
04:49Nothing.
04:50Black.
04:51It's gone black now.
04:52The flocculent maybe didn't do a good job.
04:58I wouldn't have thought it'd go that black that early.
05:01No.
05:02Wow.
05:03So where we're at, Rick, is that we're floating in the water.
05:06We're in the water column.
05:08The sonar is completely silted out.
05:11So we can't see through the dirt, the mud.
05:14Hmm.
05:15I wouldn't have expected that.
05:16Yeah.
05:17We have the proper amount of flocculent in there.
05:19It's seeing nothing but mud.
05:21It's black.
05:23It's as if there's something completely blocking all the sonar signals.
05:27Yeah.
05:28Mysterious setbacks on Oak Island have been a reoccurring nightmare for treasure hunters ever since the
05:36discovery of the money pit in 1795.
05:40So today, having taken diligent measures to improve the visibility in Aladdin's cave, the failure to capture sonar images through the heavy silt in the water is hard for the team to fathom.
05:54Especially since they have obtained camera images within the cavity in the past.
06:01I don't think this is going to work.
06:04I think as far as getting visual, we're done.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Without sonar data, we have to move on.
06:12We had high expectations of what Aladdin's cave might represent.
06:17Unfortunately, given the water quality, we're not going to be able to get the data that we had hoped for.
06:24We've given the water enough time to settle on.
06:27There's no value in reintroducing camera or sonar.
06:30It's just not going to work.
06:32We have certainly not found an explanation for the high metals originally detected.
06:39So something could still be down there.
06:42But you only have so much time.
06:44We have to move on.
06:46We need to call my brother and Craig and see what their opinion is.
06:49Yeah.
06:50We've got to pick another case on location.
06:52So I think all of us will meet in the war room.
06:54Ken, thank you for your time.
06:56Pleasure.
06:57Appreciate it.
06:58Okay, so let's get back to work.
07:01Later that afternoon...
07:05So I just want to bring you guys up to speed.
07:08Unfortunately, the water in Aladdin's cave is too cloudy for sonar, too cloudy for camera.
07:17The Laginas, their partner Craig Tester, and members of their team gather for a critical strategy meeting in the war room.
07:26We tried everything, and unless you have the genie in the bottle that we weren't able to retrieve, there's nothing else we can do.
07:35I think we have to make a decision to terminate the hole as unseemingly as it sounds.
07:41Yeah.
07:42Okay, so then we move on to picking another case on location.
07:47Vanessa and her team need to know exactly where we need to go next.
07:50So I have an idea where I would like to go.
07:54I have never left the idea that shaft six contains the one thing, treasure.
08:01Despite the fact that the team is currently unable to pursue two potential treasure locations in the Money Pit area,
08:09Incredibly, there is one more that they have yet to fully investigate.
08:16In the summer of 1861, members of the Oak Island Association drilled through what were thought to be two stacked wooden treasure chests
08:26at a depth of approximately 100 feet in the original Money Pit shaft,
08:32in an attempt to retrieve them while avoiding a believed man-made flood tunnel.
08:37They moved 18 feet to the west and dug an adjacent shaft known as Shack 6 down to a depth of 118 feet.
08:47From there, they began tunneling laterally toward the Money Pit with a hope of retrieving the treasure from below.
08:55Unfortunately, just one foot from their target, a flood of seawater rushed in, forcing the workers to flee,
09:04and causing tons of lumber inside the Money Pit and the believed treasure chests to collapse into the tunnel connected to Shaft 6.
09:16You've been trying to find this thing in Shaft 6 forever. Where would you put this?
09:21I would move to the sump area, the lower end of the shaft.
09:24That's down here, right?
09:25Right down there.
09:26Okay.
09:27Are we absolutely certain that Shaft 6? To the best of our ability, yes.
09:33So that's where I would go.
09:35We know that there was a massive collapse.
09:39It makes you think there has to be some treasure.
09:42Who knows? We have to go dig it up.
09:45Yeah.
09:46If that shaft was never fully cleaned out and gone through, then there's potential there, and that's a great place for a caisson.
09:54We should name it Rick Lagina, and we go to the bottom.
09:58I agree with everything except it should be RP 1, Rick Pit 1, there.
10:05Shaft 6 always read real to me.
10:08I could picture myself running for my life as the Money Pit collapses.
10:14If there was a treasure in the original Money Pit, some of that is in Shaft 6 and in the tunnel associated with Shaft 6.
10:25That is my firm belief.
10:27I appreciate all the kind words, incredibly humbling, but we wouldn't be here without each other.
10:35So look to your right, look to your left, draw inspiration, and let's get out there and find it.
10:42Agreed.
10:43Well said.
10:47Keep going.
10:49As representatives from Rock Equipment and SB Canada,
10:53begin the potentially historic excavation of the RP 1 shaft in the Money Pit area,
11:00nearly half a mile to the west on Lot 5.
11:03There's still stuff coming out in the middle.
11:05Yeah.
11:06Just keep troweling.
11:08Archaeologists Helen Shelton and Moya McDonald,
11:12along with their assistant, Todd Langseth,
11:14are exploring an area just outside of a mysterious rounded stone foundation.
11:20We still have hope of finding some more stuff.
11:23Perfect.
11:24Shouldn't take too much longer.
11:25While the team has been amazed to find evidence of numerous treasure deposits in the Money Pit area,
11:31this rounded feature on Lot 5, which was first investigated in 2022,
11:37has produced evidence that it may have been used as a campsite over different time periods,
11:44ranging from as late as the mid-18th century to as early as, and perhaps even prior to, the 17th century.
11:52The most telling discoveries include a 14th century barter token that, just like the lead cross that was uncovered at Smith's Cove in 2017,
12:04may be connected to the Knights Templar.
12:07And also, multiple 17th century iron tools and a barrel strap,
12:12which have been scientifically linked to the birthplace of Sir William Phipps,
12:17an English politician and privateer who some believe buried a vast cache of silver and gold on Oak Island back in 1687.
12:28Now the team is meticulously excavating a 15 by 15 foot test pit just outside of the rounded foundation,
12:37in the hopes of finding more clues that will help prove who created this feature
12:43and identify who else may have used it prior to the discovery of the Money Pit.
12:49Hey, Ellen. I don't know what that is.
12:54Wow. Let me see. That looks different.
13:00It looks like a nail to me.
13:02Oh, my heavens. There's hardly any corrosion on that at all.
13:06That's in as good a shape as a copper nail, but I don't think it's copper.
13:10Maria, you have your magnet here?
13:12Yeah, I do.
13:13Could we use it to test and see if this is iron or not?
13:15Yeah, for sure.
13:16Square, so it's hand-forged?
13:19Hand-forged.
13:20Yeah.
13:21OK.
13:23OK.
13:26Cool.
13:27So it's definitely iron.
13:29Yeah.
13:30You found a nail earlier, right, Todd, like the regular ones?
13:33Yeah, almost in the same spot.
13:35Doesn't look anything like that.
13:37That's typically what we're pulling out for nails here.
13:39Yeah, so this is what we're normally getting, these corroded chunks of iron.
13:43And this one looks pristine.
13:46Isn't that weird?
13:47Mm-hmm.
13:48This is very unusual.
13:49This was probably just made for building a structure.
13:52This one could have been from something else.
13:54Mm.
13:55And it's missing its head.
13:56I wonder if maybe it isn't even a nail.
13:58It could be something else.
14:00It's very unusual.
14:02So we found some strapping, so maybe it's part of, like, some sort of chest or barrel or something.
14:07Or barrel or something like that.
14:08Yeah.
14:09A hand-forged iron artifact?
14:12Possibly from a barrel or chest?
14:15If so, could it be an important clue that helps link this structure on Lot 5 to a possible treasure deposition in the money pit?
14:23I think there's a decent amount of evidence that whatever happened on Lot 5 had something to do with the money pit.
14:30Think about that.
14:31The rather large group of people it takes to do it.
14:34So where'd they go?
14:35We haven't found one like this before here.
14:38It could be quite old.
14:39Lot 5 is a very good place for an encampment.
14:42There was a lot of human activity there.
14:45Emmer couldn't XRF it, and that will tell us a lot more.
14:50That is very interesting.
14:52Mm-hmm.
14:53Todd, good find.
14:54Excellent.
14:55As the investigation on Lot 5 continues...
14:58That's interesting, Jack.
15:00So you got that?
15:02Yeah.
15:03This is redeposited soil.
15:05Jack Begley, Gary Drayton, Tom Nolan, and geoscientist Dr. Ian Spooner are continuing another critical investigation
15:14in the northern region of the triangle-shaped swamp.
15:18This soil, this type of clay, should not be this high up.
15:22Okay.
15:23We're still on the edge of this cobblestone path.
15:25Mm-hmm.
15:26But they redeposited this soil.
15:29Somebody did something here.
15:31Yeah.
15:32Do you want to scrape the top over here a bit?
15:35Sure.
15:36Yeah, absolutely.
15:37Take that corner there, Al.
15:39During the past decade, the team has uncovered a number of man-made structures all across the swamp,
15:47such as a potentially 500-year-old stone road or ship's wharf in the southeastern corner,
15:54as well as a massive paved area near the center of the bog, which Dr. Spooner believes could date back to 1200 AD.
16:04And just this year, they have unearthed numerous sections of a cobblestone pathway that led them to an empty brick-and-slate vault in the northern region,
16:15which may have been constructed in the 18th century or earlier.
16:20These are just a few of the discoveries that may validate the theory of Tom's late father, Fred Nolan,
16:27who believed that the swamp was artificially created to hide numerous caches of treasure.
16:33And I'm starting to see rocks pop up over here, too.
16:37Now, the team is working to track and uncover more sections of the cobblestone path,
16:43in the hopes that it might lead to another important and perhaps valuable discovery.
16:50These are completely abnormal.
16:54They were just stacked in the swamp material.
16:57To me, it's kind of impressive.
16:59It's very similar, this feature, to the stone road, just a different scale.
17:03I think it's just human place.
17:05Yeah.
17:06On the other side of that bigger boulder right there.
17:09Right.
17:10There was more redeposited clays.
17:12Jack, can you show me where that soil is?
17:14That's great.
17:15Yeah, it's on the other side of this rock.
17:16Okay.
17:17This right here.
17:18Yep.
17:19This material, you can see it's on top of these cobbles.
17:23Right.
17:24And it even comes over right underneath.
17:26Yeah, there's a lot of hand-laid rock in here, too, right?
17:29Oh, definitely.
17:30You don't get cobbles all like this in swamp material.
17:35It doesn't blow in with a storm.
17:37No, and it seems to be in linear formation.
17:40Yeah.
17:41To me, what's exciting about it is that if it does go to the West Drumlin,
17:47then it most certainly goes to the East Drumlin.
17:50So this was a primary pathway to some kind of activity.
17:55You'd need something constructed to get from one side of the swamp to the other.
18:01And I was so excited by lot five, but how does lot five connect to the money pit?
18:07And this may be that thread that connects the two.
18:11This could be the connection we've been looking for.
18:13Yep.
18:14A pathway connecting the Western Drumlin or section of Oak Island to the Eastern Drumlin?
18:21I think when it does get cleared a little bit more, it'll start to show itself better.
18:26If so, might this pathway have been used to transport valuables from lot five to the money pit area?
18:33And also to be hit in the swamp.
18:36I'm off.
18:37Okay.
18:38See ya.
18:39See if there is anything else.
18:41Yeah, let's go for it.
18:45See if we've got any hits.
18:51Oh, look at what we've got here.
18:53Poking at them all.
18:54What did you see, Gary?
18:55Look what we've got.
18:59Look what we've got.
19:00Looks like old leather.
19:02In the Oak Island swamp, metal detection expert Gary Drayton has just made a potentially significant discovery.
19:10It is, I bet.
19:12Look at the holes in it.
19:14Looks like it's a eel, doesn't it?
19:17Yeah.
19:18And the holes were from the pegs that would hold the sole down, right?
19:22Yeah.
19:23So they use little square shank nails called ob nails, and that's how you know it's an older shoe.
19:29I think this is an eel to an adult's boot.
19:35And look, there's three layers to it.
19:38That's going to help a shoe expert to tell us how old this is.
19:42It looks old to me.
19:45I mean, that's no modern eel.
19:48No, that's all.
19:49I mean, that's a shoe-in to help us find out who made these structures.
19:55Could Gary Drayton be correct that the team may have found a critical clue as to who may have constructed the cobblestone pathway in the swamp?
20:06And perhaps, also, who may have buried treasure in the money pit area?
20:11And should we have a little dig around here and see if there's any more parts to it?
20:24Oh, nice one, Tom.
20:25For your shoe gear.
20:26Nice.
20:27End of the shoe.
20:28Fantastic.
20:29Bag that with the other stuff.
20:30Nice one, Tom.
20:31See if we can find some more.
20:32Look at that.
20:33As my mate Rick would say, eyes and boots.
20:37Well, we have maybe recovered a piece of a boot or a shoe.
20:41Hey, we got another piece here, look.
20:44Now, it's not the type of booty we was hoping to find, but it could be very old.
20:50And maybe we can tell who was here.
20:53Oh, there's more.
20:55Yeah?
20:57Oh, yeah.
20:59That's fantastic.
21:00Wow.
21:01Ye old shoe store right here in the swamp.
21:04I think the whole shoe's still here.
21:07This could be one of the biggest clues that we've found in the swamp in total.
21:11Wow.
21:13Here comes the guys.
21:15Well, you've certainly made some progress.
21:18You know me, mate.
21:19My twin optical scanners are always on the ground.
21:21Mm-hmm.
21:22And I saw two pieces of leather sticking up, which turned into a lot more pieces.
21:28These are really old.
21:29Look at all this old leather here.
21:33And it's all got the square rob nails in it.
21:37Mm-hmm.
21:38I mean, look, there isn't no stitching.
21:39This is old.
21:40Where was this, here?
21:41Just here.
21:42When you say old?
21:43I'd say 1600s.
21:44I'll go straight to 1600s with this.
21:45Really?
21:46Or even older.
21:47I remember a shoe we found in the swamp, and Joe Landry dated that back to the 1600s.
21:56This is absolutely stunning, mate.
22:00That is either a shoe or a boot.
22:03Last year, while investigating the stone road in the southeast corner of the swamp, the team found part of a deteriorated shoe, which leather expert Joe Landry believed may have belonged to a 17th century European soldier.
22:19This would have been more likely done in Europe.
22:23Could Gary, Tom, and Jack have found additional clues that may help identify who created some of the features in the swamp?
22:31All the more reason the carbon data, because we always try to corroborate data.
22:36Let's pull the top off, and then look for whatever else might be here.
22:40Yeah, because we know something's afoot here.
22:42Something's afoot here.
22:44Elementary, Watson.
22:47The following morning.
22:53Keep your eyes peeled, because just yesterday your dad saw leather popping out of the swamp.
23:00Hawkeyes definitely run in the family.
23:04We'll find it.
23:05All right.
23:06Alan, let her rip.
23:08As the investigation continues in the northern region of the swamp.
23:12Anything unusual, Terry?
23:14Just backfill.
23:15Okay.
23:16In the Muddy Pit area, Gary Drayton and geologist Terry Matheson are monitoring the excavation of the RP-1 shaft.
23:25A shaft where they hope to encounter a tunnel some 118 feet deep that may contain a debris field of timbers and potentially valuables.
23:39Morning.
23:40Hi, Vanessa.
23:41Vanessa, how you doing?
23:42Good.
23:43We just got a reading for you.
23:44Super.
23:45The hole right now is at 69 and a half.
23:46Well, that's great news.
23:47Yeah.
23:48You guys get too.
23:50Thanks.
23:51We got another load, mate.
23:53I must back him.
23:54Better get there.
23:55Yep.
23:56See you in a minute.
23:57I got an hit here.
23:58You hit?
23:59Need a hand, Gary?
24:00Yeah, just there.
24:01It's deep.
24:02Right.
24:03Let's have a little recheck.
24:04I got an hit here.
24:05I got an hit here.
24:06I got an hit here.
24:14You hit?
24:15Need a hand, Gary?
24:17Yeah, just there.
24:18It's deep.
24:19Right.
24:20Let's have a little recheck.
24:31It's iron.
24:32Bit of iron plate, like a broken strap, possibly.
24:45Right.
24:46Actually, it's rounded edge.
24:48It's, like, decorative.
24:50Finished edge, for sure.
24:51That could easily be off a box or a chest.
24:56We're getting there.
24:57Yeah.
24:58Where are we going to find what fell out of those chests?
25:01Has Gary actually found a strap from one of the two treasure
25:05chests that are believed to have broken apart during the 1861
25:09collapse of the money pit?
25:11If so, does that mean the team might soon unearth valuables
25:15from within the shaft six tunnel?
25:18The old finds are coming up right now.
25:20I agree.
25:21All right, mate.
25:22If you hang on to that and put that on the table,
25:24I'll finish searching the spoils.
25:26We'll get it off the lab.
25:27OK, mate.
25:28We've got a signal.
25:29We've got a signal, Terry.
25:30We've got a signal.
25:31We've got a signal, Terry.
25:32Hang on.
25:33Hang on.
25:34One more fish.
25:35Here we go.
25:36Look at this.
25:37Oh, my lordy.
25:38There we go.
25:39Look at this.
25:40There we go.
25:41Look at this.
25:42Oh, wow.
25:43Hang on, one more fish, there we go, look at this, oh my lordy, there we go, look at
26:09this, oh wow, that looks like a strap doesn't it?
26:12Yeah, that is a strap, oh my lordy, it is a critical moment for the Oak Island team, at
26:19a depth of more than 70 feet in the RP-1 shaft, they are finding clues that suggest part of
26:26the fabled money pit treasure may soon be within their reach, that's sweet mate, absolutely,
26:31we're on a treasure hunt, we're looking for treasure chests, and we sure know they used
26:37to have iron straps around them, this is a great sign, now this is really cool mate,
26:46that is an old looking strap, it looks like it's raw iron, we don't find many pieces like
26:54this, that I've got two straps put together, overlapping, and there seems to be a rivet
27:01in there, wow, you're right mate, that's for reinforcement, if you found an old treasure chest, or like
27:09a lock box, you would have something like this, this strap around it, for sure, a large box has
27:16to be reinforced, imagine the weight of gold, yeah, love it mate, now I remember a piece of iron strap
27:23that was found on lock five, maybe we have found another connection between the money pit and lock
27:30five, we won't know that until we have this tested, but I wouldn't be surprised, it's tantalizing
27:36mine right, I'm hoping Rick's right mate, this Rick pick one turns out to be the treasure, here, here,
27:45all right mate, put it in the bag, okay, you get a minute on your upstroke, can you raise up the bottom
27:51deck, yeah, perfect, thank you, hi Vanessa, hey guys, hi Rick, hey guys, how are you doing today,
27:59I'm feeling a little anxious, to be honest with you, how deep are we, we're at 78s, I really believe
28:07we're going to find something, that'd be awesome, yeah, let's see what this one does, as the can
28:12approaches the area of interest, I'm excited, stressed, for one simple reason, I've always
28:19believed that shaft six is the key to answering the question of, is there a treasure in the money
28:25pit, I hope we prove that today, I mean look at all the artifacts coming up now, we're getting
28:34some really old looking iron straps, and how many times have we shown Kerman leg straps, and you know
28:41where it goes straight to, treasure chests and boxes, these are very cool, yeah, so this could be a
28:49good sign, you've got to find the iron before you find the gold and silver, I'm looking forward to it, I love it, I'm talking
28:57about treasure mate, we've got another load here, which means another chance, okay, perfect, everything is rounding to a very good day, oh I 100% agree, while the excavation continues in RP1,
29:10later that afternoon, okay, we're here to talk about this item found on lot five, right, yeah, Rick and Marty Lagina join other members of the team in the lab to receive a report on the believed nail that was found one day ago on lot five, this one is different, because most of the ones we find are like corroded bits of nail, very corroded, this one popped out of the ground, looking almost perfect,
29:40yeah, so I brought it in for Emma to test, and run her analysis on it, and, and it is older, I will concur, earlier today, archaeometallurgist Emma Culligan, scanned the artifact, using the Skyscan 1273 CT scanner, a device, which emits x-ray radiation, to produce a three-dimensional image of its finer details,
30:06in addition, she also examined it, with the x-ray fluorescence spectrometer, or XRF, which uses gamma rays, to determine an object's elemental composition,
30:18it's not entirely a nail, I'd call it more of like a, pins, they're iron pins,
30:24yeah, okay, but the cross section is square, so it is hand wrought, non-machine made,
30:29mm-hmm, compositionally, it's very clean, minimal impurities, yeah, everything suggests an earlier date,
30:39but in general, the purer the iron, the more it lasts, yeah, generally, generally speaking,
30:44yeah, I think the big indicator was the luminance to the con ratio, I've seen that characteristic,
30:50in colonial American metals, so you got late 1600s, to mid 1700s,
30:56all right, that date range fits with William Phipps, and the date range that would fit with
31:02him possibly being on Oak Island, yeah, in 1687, Sir William Phipps made two historic salvages of the
31:11Concepcion, a Spanish galleon, that sank off the coast of the Dominican Republic in 1641,
31:17while carrying 100 tons of silver, gold, and jewels, after delivering 34 tons of recovered valuables
31:25to the English crown from his first mission, curiously, Phipps claimed that he only found
31:31five tons more on his second trip, this has led many to speculate that he and a Masonic associate
31:38named Captain Andrew Belcher may have hidden the missing riches on Oak Island, based on their
31:45secret knowledge of an ancient vault that had been buried in the money pit more than three centuries
31:50earlier by members of the Knights Templar, I mean Emma, I would suggest when you get time with
31:56everything else you're doing to compare the metallurgy there to the Phipps collection, let us know if that
32:01matches, absolutely, okay, is it possible that this artifact might be related to the numerous iron
32:10tools previously found on Lot 5, that were scientifically linked to the birthplace of Sir William
32:16Phipps, but more importantly, might these discoveries, and older ones that have been dated to as early
32:23as the 14th century, help explain why the team has found evidence that multiple treasures could be buried
32:31in the money pit area, and even in the swamp, we refer to the historical narrative of the island
32:38all the time, right, well, let's follow the possible Phipps connection, okay, anyway, we've got work to do,
32:45let's all get out there, all right, thank you, see you later,
32:49as a new day begins on Oak Island
32:54in she goes
32:57and while the excavation continues in the money pit area
33:00all right, Al, let's get going
33:02you're at the bottom over there, but it looks like you got still like a foot over here
33:06in the northern end of the swamp
33:09Jack Bagley, Steve Guptill, and Katya Drayton
33:12continue searching for additional sections of the cobblestone path
33:16and potentially valuable clues
33:19Hey Jack, I'm finding axe-chopped wood
33:25You're finding axe-cut wood?
33:28Axe-chopped wood
33:29Whoa
33:31So, we're finding square logs that are not natural
33:38It was found in the deeper piles
33:40What's weird about this wood, they're roughly cut to where they could be quite over
33:46Gold?
33:47Seems to me like it's remains of a structure
33:50And we're also finding logs that are burnt
33:54Oh, it's burnt, but that looks cut too
33:57Mm-hmm
33:58That's really strange
33:59Maybe someone burnt it when they were done
34:02Mm-hmm
34:03To hide the evidence
34:04Each of these tells a story and they all come together at some point
34:08Evidence of a burned, man-made feature?
34:11Great job saving them
34:13But if so, could it be related to the mysterious cobblestone pathway
34:18And the nearby structures such as the brick and slate fault
34:23It's strange that we're finding so many different cut pieces of wood that are also burned
34:29But it definitely means someone was doing work in the swamp
34:33And then at the end there was a fire
34:35Exactly
34:36And maybe that's why we're not finding that many pieces
34:39And it's definitely worth setting aside and see what dates come back from this wood
34:44Yep
34:45Great job, Katia
34:47We'll keep looking
34:48Definitely got the eagle eyes
34:50Let's get back to it
34:52Finding wood that is axe cut but also is burnt is something that I've never seen
35:00Especially in wetlands
35:02It's really not natural to have
35:05What else are we going to find?
35:07Ow
35:08It seems like someone had pre-doug
35:10This already has the feel like it's redeposited soils
35:16So just be sure to take your time going through here
35:19Because I want to analyze it
35:21While the investigation in the swamp continues
35:25We've got to be getting close
35:27We are getting close
35:28Later that afternoon in the Money Pit area
35:31Rick Lagina and other members of the team
35:34Monitor the excavation in RP-1
35:37As it closes in on the legendary Shaft 6 tunnel
35:41Some 118 feet underground
35:44How deep are we?
35:45The dig is at like 96, 97
35:48So I'm getting a little nervous, I admit it
35:52There's a lot of material here
35:55You need that one thing
35:56I'm just surprised we don't have one more wood
35:59With a catastrophic collapse like that
36:01Things are going to spread out
36:03We're still above your target area
36:05So we're going to keep going
36:06And we'll keep you informed
36:07We're going to keep looking
36:08Okay
36:09We're all hoping to find something
36:11I remember how everyone spoke so eloquently
36:14About that these should be my picks
36:16And why I've always felt strongly about Shaft 6
36:19But I want to find something for them too
36:22I want to prove the story real
36:25Craig, there's some timber in there
36:29Timber?
36:38What's that Terry?
36:39Is that anything?
36:43It's highly shaped chunk of wood my friend
36:46Looks like somebody took an axe to it
36:48Axe cut wood?
36:51Could it be part of Shaft 6?
36:54And offer evidence that they are on track
36:57To soon encounter a tunnel full of debris
37:00And possible treasure
37:02I think this is the edge of the shaft
37:05Look at how dark this wood is
37:08And its adds cut
37:09Very dark, yeah
37:10Save that piece
37:11We should be at the level
37:13Where the money pit collapsed in and up
37:15Every scoop now is below 100
37:17So from here to the bottom
37:19Could be part of the collapse
37:20Yeah
37:21Yeah, that's right
37:28There's the wood
37:29Look at it
37:30Look!
37:33This is what we've been waiting for
37:34Amazing
37:38This is what we've been waiting for
37:39Yep
37:40That is a lot of wood
37:42It is a potentially historic moment
37:45In the money pit area
37:47For Rick Lagina
37:48And other members of the Oak Island team
37:50So this is probably Shaft 6
37:52Yep
37:53Most likely Shaft 6
37:54Yep
37:55At a depth of some 105 feet
37:58In the RP1 caisson
38:00They have just recovered evidence
38:02Of the 1861 structure
38:04Known as Shaft 6
38:06Could these wedges be tunnel wood?
38:08Possible
38:10And the possible remains
38:11Of an adjacent tunnel
38:13Containing wooden debris
38:14And potential treasure
38:17When the collapse happens
38:19It probably tore some of the tunnel apart
38:21Yes
38:22Agreed
38:23And that would come first
38:24Yeah
38:26The wood I'm seeing
38:27Is fractured in itself
38:29Two distinctly different types
38:31And so I feel it represents
38:33A collapse feature
38:34And that is exactly what we're looking for
38:37Now
38:38Every time the hammer grab
38:39Drops the material
38:41Your excitement goes up
38:42And the hope
38:44Continues to persist
38:45That you will find the treasure
38:46So here you go
38:48Look at that
38:50Ed's cut wood
38:52This is early on
38:54This could represent
38:55The first gripping in the money pit
38:57That's cool
38:58Certainly does not fit
38:59With that dimensional lumber
39:00No it doesn't
39:01No
39:02Although the team
39:03Was expecting to encounter
39:06The Shaft 6 tunnel
39:07Several feet below
39:08The current depth
39:09Of RP1
39:10Let's see what this is
39:11Yeah that's a lot of wood
39:12Is it possible
39:13That they are closing in
39:14On the legendary riches
39:15Is it possible
39:16Is it possible
39:17That they are closing in
39:18On the legendary riches
39:19That treasure hunters
39:20Have been seeking
39:21For more than
39:22Two centuries
39:23Hey guys
39:26These ones just came out
39:28Of 108 feet
39:30So Rick
39:31What's that telling us?
39:33What
39:34That's if I knew
39:35I'd tell you
39:36But you're smiling
39:37This is
39:38Yeah it's cool
39:39It's cool
39:40It's cool
39:41Okay
39:42Yeah it's all a good sign
39:43So this wood
39:44We believe could be
39:45Original money pit wood
39:46Or re-crib money pit wood
39:47That traveled 18 feet
39:48Through a tunnel
39:49In the Shaft 6
39:50After the collapse
39:51Wow
39:52The only thing
39:53We're missing
39:54Is the treasure
39:55Yeah
39:56Okay well
39:57We are losing sunlight
39:58Alright
39:59But the good news
40:00Is we do have
40:01The shaft down quite far
40:03The dig is at 111
40:04But I think
40:05We gotta go deeper
40:06Tomorrow to get
40:07That one thing for Rick
40:08One thing for all of us
40:09Yep
40:10For all of us
40:11Getting later in the year
40:13The light diminishes
40:15Rather rapidly
40:16There are safety concerns
40:18So you just have to
40:19Call a halt for the day
40:21I hope everyone knows that
40:24I really appreciate
40:25Everybody's hard work
40:27To me this is one
40:28Really good book
40:29We just need an ending
40:30And with your help
40:32We'll get there
40:33Yeah because it's
40:34A treasure story
40:35You bet Gary
40:36Alright
40:37Let's start tomorrow off
40:38With the bank
40:39Sounds great
40:40Let's find that one thing
40:41Alright let's do it
40:42For Rick, Marty, Craig and the team
40:45The dedication to build upon the efforts
40:48Of the faithful searchers
40:49Who came before them
40:51May now be on the verge
40:53Of paying off
40:54But as they reach further
40:57Into the dark
40:58And mysterious depths
40:59Of the money pit
41:00Just what
41:02Might awake them
41:03A vast cache of Spanish silver
41:07Gold and jewels
41:09Or might they unearth something
41:13Much more profound
41:14And priceless
41:16After 230 years
41:20Perhaps the ultimate revelation
41:23Will take
41:24Just one more day
41:26Next time
41:28Next time
41:29On the curse of Oak Island
41:31Whoa
41:32There's something here
41:33Sounds pretty good
41:34Ooh
41:36Wow
41:37Is that normal?
41:38It's cryptic to me
41:39Oh
41:40So this could be something new
41:41I had like an aha moment
41:43It's 85 years before the discovery of the money pit
41:45Yeah
41:46Yeah
41:47Wow
41:48Here we go
41:49Come on baby
41:50Trying to find one thing
41:51Whoa
41:52Ooh
41:53That's fantastic
41:54That could be a piece of the original money pit
41:55Oh I think for sure
41:56Yes
