00:00Chepette team are doing more than making sure animals live.
00:04They've eaten a full Christmas cake.
00:06If they've eaten a whole cake between themselves, that's potentially deadly, really.
00:10They want to help them live better lives.
00:13You've had a rough time, haven't you? And you deserve better.
00:16So in a challenge like never before...
00:19You'll get a team together. I'll get a team together.
00:21They're raising money for them.
00:23£800.
00:26It's about competitive Christmas spirit.
00:28Our team has got to win.
00:31Merry Christmas, Ryan.
00:32That is amazing.
00:33Stepping out of their comfort zones.
00:35I'm feeling like I'm a bit up to my depth here.
00:39Now I know why cowboys walk like cowboys.
00:43And even seeing what it's like to be Santa's reindeer.
00:46It's Christmas!
00:49But will Christmas jumper designing make Team Peter or Team Julian...
00:53Give it up for the Christmas jumper face-off.
00:56Top dog on the catwalk.
00:58Right, let's go and smash this thing.
01:00Good luck, everybody.
01:01Good luck, everybody.
01:01The cold and the warmth.
01:20Another winter, another Christmas coming to Yorkshire.
01:24The freezing temperatures can be tough on the countryside's great creatures.
01:36And while some dogs have a cosy fireplace in loving family homes...
01:40Not all are so lucky at Christmastime.
01:47It wants to go that way a touch.
01:50So as the festive countdown begins in Fersk...
01:53Peter's travelled a few miles south to the Dogs Trust in Leeds.
02:00To see why their famous slogan is as important today...
02:03Hello, Peter.
02:04Hello, Peter. It's lovely to meet you.
02:06...as when it was coined nearly 50 years ago.
02:09A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.
02:12And at this time of year, I think that's never been more relevant.
02:15So, Peter, this is a tally of all the dogs that we have helped and supported this year and rehomed.
02:21This is the essence of why you're here, isn't it, really?
02:24It's an organisation that I've worked with over my career as a veterinary surgeon.
02:28So I've come today to see what goes on to rehabilitate dogs and put them into forever homes.
02:34She's found herself blessed. She's coming as a handover to us.
02:38She's only been in a few days now.
02:40Oh.
02:41Obviously, we're coming up to Christmas now.
02:43Is this a particularly busy time of year for you?
02:46It's always really, really busy.
02:47We tend to find that the aftermath of Christmas is when we'll get more requests for dogs coming in.
02:52Peter himself hasn't owned a dog since he and Lynne lost their beloved boxer, Alf, eight years ago.
02:59Good boy. Good boy, Alf.
03:02But he knows that for anyone, it's a huge commitment.
03:05Alfie.
03:06What's the main reason that dogs are handed in to the Trust?
03:09So it might be, you know, they're moving home.
03:11They've been a change in working hours.
03:13But we also get strays coming in as well.
03:15Across the UK and Ireland, the charity has rehomed more than 10,000 dogs since last Christmas.
03:22So this is our real-life room, Peter.
03:25Hello.
03:26Hello.
03:27Oh, you're a babe, aren't you?
03:30Hello.
03:31And this is a space that we'll bring the dogs into to get them used to being in a home environment.
03:35What a brilliant idea.
03:37Rehabilitation carer Amy helps dogs with additional needs.
03:41Who's this?
03:42So this is open.
03:43But he's been in here a long time.
03:45About a year or so.
03:46So he's what we would consider an underdog.
03:48He needs quite a specific type of home.
03:49Right.
03:50He's quite worried.
03:51Yes.
03:52And he shows that by just being quite noisy.
03:53So, unfortunately, that does take a little bit longer.
03:55As attached as we get.
03:56Yes.
03:57We want to see him go.
03:58I want you to go and live your best life.
04:00Just waiting for that special someone to come find him.
04:03You sit.
04:04Do you wear this paw?
04:05Oh.
04:06Do you wear this paw?
04:07Yeah, good boy.
04:08I might have something in my pocket as well.
04:10Wow.
04:11Yeah.
04:12Yes.
04:13That's lovely.
04:15After meeting Opie and the other dogs here, Peter's determined to help.
04:20With more than just treats.
04:22So he's calling his fellow dog lover back in Thirsk, Julian.
04:27Hello.
04:28Good morning, young man.
04:30How are you?
04:31Oh, hello, P.
04:32You all right?
04:33How can I help?
04:34I'm at the dogs' trust at the moment.
04:35And I've just been thinking whether we could put our heads together.
04:38And come up with some money raising event.
04:41A festive kind of charity event?
04:43Yeah.
04:44You are very competitive.
04:45And what I wondered was whether we could have a bit of a competition.
04:49You get a team together.
04:51I'll get a team together.
04:52Are you really sure you want to do this?
04:54So you're saying you could beat me?
04:56Is that what you're saying?
04:57He's gone quiet.
04:58No, he hasn't.
04:59No, I'm not quiet.
05:00No, no.
05:01No.
05:02I think what just struck me.
05:03What about?
05:04Having a Christmas jumper competition.
05:07We'll have some independent judges.
05:10And we'll see who can come up with the best ideas.
05:13What do you reckon?
05:15I'm sure I can put my thinking cap on.
05:18Bring it on.
05:19I'll be ready for it.
05:20Bring it on?
05:21Yeah.
05:22May the best man win.
05:23And may the best fundraiser win.
05:25I think it's a really good idea.
05:28We can raise hopefully a lot of money and make a big difference to the animals that we want to help.
05:33But I'm not very experienced with designing really anything, let alone clothes.
05:39Green.
05:40Both he and I have always been competitive.
05:43And so I think we'll be putting our heart and soul into this.
05:46I think I might be able to put something together that will be a bit of a showstopper.
05:51May the best jumper win.
05:56A dog isn't just for Christmas.
05:58But at this time of year they need watching more closely than ever.
06:03Because while festive treats might hit our waistlines.
06:07They can pose a much greater threat to our four-legged friends.
06:11Good afternoon, Sunbelt, Beverly Centre, Beverly speaking.
06:14And the Nurse Lucy's have heard about a Christmas crisis.
06:18We've just had an emergency call of two dogs that have eaten.
06:22One of the worst things that they could have eaten near the festive period.
06:25So all the nurses are running around in the back trying to get everything ready for them.
06:30Julian's come over to the Weatherby practice to greet Helen,
06:34who's rushed in mother and daughter Cocker Spaniels.
06:37Note down.
06:38Mabel and Libby.
06:39I was going to meet my friend for brunch in Harrogate and I'd forgotten something.
06:44So I went back home to discover these two enjoying a homemade Delia Smith Christmas cake.
06:50I don't know how much either of them have consumed.
06:53So.
06:54What have they been doing?
06:56They've eaten a full Christmas cake.
06:57A whole Christmas cake.
06:58A whole Christmas cake.
06:59Come on girls.
07:00And how are they feeling?
07:01They look quite pleased with themselves.
07:02Well they are quite pleased.
07:03They're probably drunk.
07:04They smell of brandy.
07:07So the cake was about that big by that.
07:14Bloody hell.
07:15The cake was in the cupboard.
07:16They got into the cupboard.
07:17They got into the cupboard.
07:18But the cake was here.
07:19Oh.
07:20Worked up.
07:21Do you think they were standing on each of the shoulders or something?
07:23I don't know what they were doing.
07:24I don't know what they were doing.
07:25But they obviously have worked together.
07:27Teamwork.
07:28Naughty dogs.
07:30So when did they eat it just now?
07:32About, about 20 past nine.
07:34So 20 minutes to go.
07:36Particularly the raisins and sultanas are very dangerous to dogs.
07:40It can cause kidney failure.
07:41Right.
07:42Yeah.
07:43And that can come on quite quickly actually.
07:44Okay.
07:45Some dogs can react badly even to just a very few raisins.
07:50Any amount is toxic but if they've eaten a whole cake between themselves then that's potentially deadly really.
07:58Well what we'll need to do is make them sick to get it out.
08:03So take them in the back and give them some injections to make them sick.
08:07Come on dogs.
08:08Come on.
08:09Time is now a crucial factor.
08:12I've got everything lined up.
08:13I've got it already.
08:14Perfect.
08:15I'm ready.
08:16This is a drug that we need to give which might both of sick quite quickly and very vigorously.
08:22The girls do concern me because it can be quite fatal.
08:25And when you've got two of them you are more concerned because you could lose potentially
08:30two dogs.
08:33Coming up.
08:34Let's have a look at you do this.
08:36Fundraising motivation.
08:37It would be lovely if she had a nice one for Christmas.
08:40Yeah.
08:41And looking for jumper inspiration.
08:44Mmm.
08:45You've got lots of elements here.
08:48Mmm.
08:49Christmas is fast approaching.
09:05And as Yorkshire's moors and dales shudder beneath the first biting frost, at the practice
09:10in Huddersfield, the cold weather.
09:11I love the tinsel me.
09:12Oh yes.
09:13Is being countered with festive warmth.
09:16I think it looks terrific.
09:17Thanks to Matt and Rohan at the animal hospital.
09:20As a finishing touch, I've got some colourful rectal gloves.
09:23I've never seen rectal gloves used as tinsel.
09:27And over at the farm and equine centre.
09:29That's good.
09:30By David and Shona.
09:32Bit of tinsel.
09:33It's Christmas.
09:34From the start, from the top.
09:39I love it.
09:40I love the vision.
09:42Look, absolutely beautiful.
09:44Now it's the vet's Christmas tree.
09:46This year, the vet's Yuletide spirit.
09:50Looks great.
09:51I feel very Christmas ready now.
09:53Will shine more brightly than ever.
09:56Animal charities are especially busy at this time of year, because of an increasing number
10:01of abandoned pets.
10:03Oh, you're good boys.
10:06So to raise money for the Dogs Trust, Peter's challenged Julian to a Christmas jumper design
10:14competition.
10:16And he wants more fundraising ideas.
10:18Look at that.
10:19Here we are.
10:20As well as some helpers in his quest to donate money and warm hearts.
10:25When I think of you and Julian, the first thing I think is fashion.
10:30I think it's a good idea.
10:32We can have a bit of a Christmas fair at the same time.
10:34We can have some Christmas stalls.
10:36Sell some tickets, get people there.
10:38If we're doing a couple of different events, should we raise money for a couple of different
10:41charities?
10:42Yeah.
10:43Instead of, you know, a walk or a run or something, we could do a charity horse ride.
10:46Can you ride?
10:47No.
10:48We could definitely fix you up with a couple of riding lessons.
10:51I've already spoken to Julian and he's a little bit competitive.
10:54Aren't we all?
10:55Well, he's got both Looses involved in his team.
10:59But he's also got Daredevil Matt involved.
11:01He's a bit of a loose cannon.
11:03Yeah, that's true.
11:04Right.
11:05So you're going to design a jumper, Peter.
11:08You're going to sort a horse ride for us, Shona.
11:10And we're going to have to learn how to ride a horse.
11:13We might be ready in Christmas, 20, 29.
11:22With team Peter excited about the Christmas charity mission to improve the lives of animals.
11:28Over in Weatherby.
11:29You two are nuts, aren't you?
11:31No wonder you ate the Christmas cake.
11:33Julian and Lucy are focusing on saving the lives of mother and daughter Cocker Spaniels,
11:38Mabel and Libby.
11:39Right, girls.
11:40Who's first?
11:41Who've rated the cupboard for a full Christmas cake.
11:44The ingredients of Christmas cake are bad for dogs, especially the raisins.
11:48So the priority is to get them out of the system.
11:51You need to do that as quickly as you can.
11:53Good girl, Libby.
11:54We need to do Mabel.
11:58We need to do Mabel now.
12:00It takes about five minutes to work, does this injection.
12:03So you're going to catch it as it comes down?
12:06Catch it in there, yes.
12:07Oh, Libby.
12:08Oh, we should have tied their ears up.
12:09I'm going to hold their ears up like that.
12:12I had a friend at university who used to get drunk all the time and was sick.
12:15Used to hold her hair back.
12:16It's her long hair.
12:17Oh, here we go.
12:18Oh, yuck.
12:19That's a hell of a lot of raisins though, isn't it?
12:22Tell you what.
12:23Oh, girls.
12:24Smells quite nice.
12:25Oh, Julia.
12:26It's like, normally dog vomit smells awful, but this smells like really festive.
12:30There's obviously quite a lot of brandy in this Christmas cake that can be bad for dogs.
12:36So that's good to get out of the system too.
12:38Oh, I'm sorry.
12:40They're feeling a bit sorry for themselves now, but undoubtedly a lot safer than they were.
12:46You're all right now.
12:48Two tipsy dogs is better than two poorly dogs.
12:57While the day job never stops, this Christmas the Yorkshire vets also need to focus on their charity showdown.
13:03And Peter's team are first out of the starting gate.
13:09So if we head just towards the centre of the arena first of all, guys.
13:13Rohin and David have come to some local stables.
13:16It's lovely and soft in here.
13:18Rohin will have a soft landing.
13:20Not to treat horses.
13:23Right, Rohin.
13:24Are we ready to get on?
13:25But for the riding lesson organised by Shona.
13:29It's quite high.
13:30It is.
13:31Nope, that doesn't work.
13:35Ahead of a daunting hack through the countryside.
13:38I've never been on a horse.
13:40I may have possibly been on a donkey once when I was a kid at Blackpool.
13:43Try and move more of your hips rather than just your shoulders.
13:46Okay, like that.
13:49Meanwhile, recruited for Julian's team, Matt has a high speed challenge in mind.
13:54To support the RSPCA.
13:56Hi everyone.
13:57The activity that I'm going to be doing is the world's fastest zip line.
14:00That travels at over a hundred miles an hour across a quarry in Wales.
14:03Bit nervous about it, but I'm quite excited too.
14:06Anything you can give will be much appreciated.
14:09The RSPCA is the world's oldest animal welfare charity.
14:14Last year they received record abandonment reports, but managed to rehome more than 25,000 pets.
14:23When Matt's doing silly things like doing a zip line and fundraising for us, it means the world to us.
14:29Every penny we raise goes here and stays here to make sure that the animals just get as much care and love they need on their journey to find their new homes.
14:37And in aid of another good cause, Rohin and David's hard yards.
14:43Your centre of balance is up, so you've kind of just got to commit to it.
14:46Yeah.
14:47Are for the farming community network, which supports farmers through tough times.
14:52But this time of year, often the toughest of all.
14:55Come by.
15:00And Shona's also hoping some social media buzz will drum up donations.
15:04Hi David.
15:05Hello.
15:06Hello.
15:07We have taken on the challenge to do a hack for the farming community network.
15:12But she knows they have a pretty big hurdle to overcome.
15:15Stand up in your stirrups.
15:17They've got a lot to learn, but to learn to ride a horse and then four days later go on a five-mile hack is quite simple.
15:25Don't look down, it's a long way.
15:27Try not to fall off.
15:28Thanks for the tip.
15:29There's quite a lot of stakes on this lesson because we need them to be able to get around this ride on Saturday to get our fundraising.
15:36Oh, that's hard.
15:38My hamstrings haven't worked this hard in years.
15:42How are you feeling?
15:43I'm just...
15:44I'm just...
15:45I'm getting some cream.
15:47I struggled with the standing up there.
15:49That hurts the legs.
15:50For the trotting?
15:51We haven't tried yet.
15:52Okay.
15:53Right, okay.
15:54It's going to be a slow five miles.
15:56The motivation for his Christmas jumper challenge to help the Dogs Trust is about to become clearer than ever to Peter.
16:08Back at its Leeds Centre.
16:10Kelly.
16:11Hello.
16:12Hello.
16:13Where he's meeting a young Jack Russell who's had a tough start in life.
16:17Doris, hello.
16:18Such a sweet girl.
16:19I can see already that Doris is the sort that I would like to take home.
16:23She's very sweet natureless considering everything she's been through.
16:28Doris came in with some serious injuries.
16:32Her history before that I don't think we're really sure, Rob.
16:36Sometimes with these poor dogs they've obviously got physical scars.
16:40Oh, jeez.
16:41But some of them have mental scars as well and they can take an awful lot of getting over.
16:47That is pretty horrendous, isn't it?
16:50It's not a dog bite or anything like that.
16:52I think somebody's most likely been around her neck there.
16:54Yeah.
16:55And the drama with Doris didn't end there.
16:58We had a call back from the dog warden to say there's been a bit of a change in her requirements and needs.
17:04Oh.
17:05She's actually pregnant.
17:06Oh.
17:07After recovering from surgery.
17:08Popped out seven babies after that.
17:10Seven babies.
17:13Seven babies.
17:14Doris, you've had a rough time, haven't you?
17:17And you deserve better.
17:21Peter's been treating animals for nearly 50 years.
17:24Let's have a look at you, Doris.
17:26Eh?
17:27Almost as long.
17:28Beautiful, healthy gums, aren't they, indeed.
17:31They're lovely, aren't they?
17:33As the Dogs Trust have been using their slogan for life, not just for Christmas.
17:38That's lovely.
17:39And he's hoping the Christmas jumper competition.
17:42Well, that's a very robust heart.
17:44Will mean a little bit more vital help for unfortunate dogs like Doris.
17:49You know, no matter how much trauma, mental trauma and physical trauma, they just want somebody to love them.
17:56She's looking in really good condition.
17:58I know it's a bad time for rehoming.
18:01Wouldn't it be lovely if she had a nice home for Christmas?
18:03Yeah.
18:04In her own home, by the Christmas tree.
18:06Yeah.
18:07Christmas dinner.
18:08And somebody loving her?
18:09Yeah.
18:16We'll just adjust these here, please.
18:18Yeah, they all look good.
18:20Determined to do all he can for dogs in need by raising funds through the Christmas jumper competition,
18:25Ah, very good.
18:26It'll be all right with that, you see.
18:29Peter's thinking about the material he might use after a job for sheep farming friend Stephen Short.
18:35What sort of a design are you thinking with this jumper then, Peter?
18:40Not sort of modern.
18:42Not flash?
18:43No, not flash.
18:44Ah.
18:45But Julian is being ambitious with his design.
18:49I'm really not an expert at this at all.
18:52So I've come to seek the help of an old friend.
18:54So hopefully I'm going to get some inspiration today.
18:57Lucy Pitaway has been awarded the title of the UK's most popular published artist.
19:02Hello.
19:03You all right?
19:04Yes, I am.
19:06How are you doing?
19:07How are you?
19:08I'm good, thanks.
19:09So good, she even managed to tease out Julian's own artistic side.
19:14I think your painting is absolutely wonderful.
19:17Well done.
19:19And with her painting of his beloved Emmy.
19:22Oh, that is it.
19:26Reduce him to tears.
19:28I think that was very nice.
19:34Obviously this is the piece of Emmy that I painted for you before.
19:38And I thought, she means so much to you.
19:40How about we take her out of this painting and Christmas-ify her somehow.
19:45If we placed her into a winter scene, gave her a little bit of sparkle somehow with a Santa hat.
19:50Christmas sparkle, yeah, that's good.
19:51Yeah, something like that.
19:52Would that work?
19:53That would be brilliant.
19:54But how on earth can you take her out of a painting though?
19:56Here's one you prepared earlier.
19:57Here's one I prepared earlier.
19:58Prepared earlier, yes.
19:59I went really old school and I've got Emmy-
20:02Snipped her out with scissors.
20:04Cut out so we can have a play.
20:06With Emmy as his artist's muse.
20:08So do I need to put it on me as if it is a jumper?
20:12Would that work?
20:13You can do if you want.
20:14There we are, Emmy.
20:17Julian's only jumper jeopardy now.
20:19I like the mistletoe.
20:20Wouldn't that be good?
20:21That's an option.
20:22It would work.
20:23He's setting the Christmas scene.
20:25They're way too big, Lucy.
20:26That's the wrong size altogether.
20:28I like the snowman.
20:29Would the robin go on the tail?
20:31A Father Christmas on a sleigh.
20:33You've got lots of elements here.
20:35We couldn't have that and the mistletoe.
20:37That wouldn't really work, would it?
20:39No.
20:40Might not work as well.
20:41It would look silly, wouldn't it?
20:42Yeah.
20:43Mmm.
20:44I'm feeling like I'm a bit out of my depth here.
20:49Can I see what Emmy thinks?
20:51It's made the test.
20:52Which do you think, Em?
20:53She says, I'm just a dog.
20:54Hopefully we'll make a decision before the big day.
21:08Coming up.
21:09The whole body's then just fallen.
21:11We're almost like she fainted.
21:13High drama.
21:14Whoa, whoa.
21:15Before high riding.
21:17I'm quite stressed.
21:18I'm worried that people are going to get lost on this route.
21:20And putting it all on the line.
21:22Right.
21:23No turning back now.
21:24We're next up.
21:25Oh.
21:26Wow.
21:27Okay.
21:28The Team Julian versus Team Peter Christmas Charity Challenge is well underway.
21:45And for Julian and Anne.
21:47Look at that.
21:48Like that.
21:49That might frighten the dogs.
21:51Festive inspiration is all around.
21:53Oh, there's more creatures.
21:54Oh, my word.
21:55Polar bear.
21:56A kitten.
21:57A hedgehog with a mushroom on its head.
22:00The competition's finale will be a Christmas jumper off at a big fundraising event.
22:07Right.
22:08Lots to choose from.
22:10With Julian and Peter coming up with their own designs to support the Dog Rescue Charity.
22:17I want to make the best Christmas jumper design I possibly can.
22:23I want it to be traditional, but it's got to be in the colours and the theme of the Dogs Trust.
22:29Oh, that's nice.
22:32But Peter can't afford to bark up the wrong tree.
22:35Perfect.
22:36Julian has branched out to involve his famous artist friend Lucy Pitaway and her design boffins.
22:43I'm not known for being an artist, but I'm quietly confident that we might do our rate on the night.
22:50Our team has got to win.
22:53Meanwhile, over in Huddersfield, Peter's teammates are ready to do their bit.
23:04Experience horse rider Shona and novices David and Rohin are going on a countryside hack to raise money for the Farming Community Network.
23:14Hello.
23:15How are you feeling?
23:16Yeah, I'm excited now.
23:17I'm ready.
23:18I'm a bit apprehensive.
23:19You just relax and enjoy it.
23:20But suddenly the vets definitely can't relax.
23:25One of the horses, Bessie, has given rider Sophie a scare.
23:35Basically, she put her head down on the box and then her front legs just sort of gave way.
23:40And, like, her whole body has then just fallen onto her side and she just laid there.
23:44Almost like she fainted.
23:46So, very scary.
23:48There's a few things that could cause that.
23:50If she's got high temperature, that could make them more likely for something like this to happen.
23:54She's looking really good.
23:55Her temperature's absolutely fine.
23:56So, just check her heart over, make sure there's not an abnormal rhythm in the heart.
24:00Everything sounds fine.
24:01Are you still happy to ride her?
24:03Yeah, yeah.
24:04I would just be really careful.
24:05I would just go steady.
24:06Yeah.
24:07And, anyway, she's like, it's all fine, guys.
24:12With Bessie given the all clear, it's time to put the festive into this festive ride.
24:18Are you ready?
24:19Big reveal.
24:20Oh!
24:22And with everyone ready to trot into Christmas, Shola's giving Santa a run for his money.
24:28Merry Christmas, Rohan.
24:29Now, that is, that's a proper outfit.
24:31That is amazing.
24:32Woohoo!
24:33She even has her own Rudolph.
24:36I think she's looking very Christmassy.
24:38You'd be pulling a sleigh in no time, weren't you, lady?
24:42The heart rate's up a little bit now.
24:46Everyone's raring to go chomping at the bit.
24:49So, it's crunch time.
24:51Whoa, whoa, whoa.
24:55And it's not just the inexperienced riders with nerves jingling.
24:59I'm quite stressed.
25:00I'm worried that people are going to get lost on this route.
25:02If anyone gets completely lost, ring someone.
25:05The route is seven miles of roads, woodland, and a steep climb up to the moors.
25:12But Rohan's already dotty about dotty.
25:15I think I've got an exceptionally good horse.
25:18She is good.
25:19She stops when you tell her to.
25:20She's so sensitive.
25:21Every little touch.
25:22Even now I'm talking, your ears are going back.
25:24She's listening to me.
25:25Right, David, how are you feeling?
25:31It's a bit like a roller coaster.
25:32It is.
25:33The fear is part of the fun.
25:35Now I know why cowboys walk like cowboys.
25:39Rohan and David are practically going to be running a ranch by next week, I think.
25:50This is a gorgeous view.
25:52Amazing, isn't it?
25:53Bit of God's own country, can't beat it.
25:56I mean, just what a better place to be on a Saturday morning.
25:59It's so lovely.
26:05Before this adventure.
26:07Good work, Rohan.
26:08I'm genuinely so proud.
26:10We're definitely beating Team Julian.
26:13Rohan's only experience in the saddle was on Blackpool Beach.
26:17That's too much.
26:20But after more than three hours, all runners and riders have safely crossed the finish line.
26:26We made it.
26:27In one piece.
26:28Hopefully we've raised a bit of money for a good cause.
26:30Although with Team Julian about to take on the world's fastest zip line, the charity challenge race is hotting up.
26:37I hope we win this competition, because we're not competitive at all, are we, David?
26:42No.
26:43No.
26:46While Rohan...
26:48That's for you.
26:49That's for looking after me.
26:50...is already full of Christmas spirit.
26:53I'm really bonding with Dottie.
26:54You really do become one.
26:56And now whenever I go and treat horses, it's something I'll always remember.
26:59Some animals aren't lucky enough to receive love and affection, which is where animal charities come in.
27:08While in Wetherby, two spaniels who do have a happy home nearly caused a seriously unhappy Christmas.
27:18The meaningful Christmas cake.
27:19The whole Christmas cake between them.
27:20The whole Christmas cake.
27:21The whole Christmas cake.
27:22Bloody hell.
27:24So after saving them.
27:25You're all right now.
27:27Julian and the Lucys are feeling the season of goodwill.
27:33So we've got a thank you card and a Christmas gift from the spaniels.
27:39Oh, that's cute.
27:41It's not Christmas cake.
27:42Okay, good.
27:43It's called Stollen cake.
27:44I've never heard of that.
27:45Is it?
27:46German?
27:47From Austria, is it?
27:48Or German?
27:49Stollen is another Christmas delicacy definitely not for dogs.
27:53Or Lucy.
27:54Have you never had Stollen cake?
27:55No.
27:56Not that many things like that.
27:58We don't like Christmas cake.
27:59No.
28:00You just like your spam, don't you?
28:01I just like spam, jam, roly-poly.
28:04And that is festive enough.
28:06What is it called?
28:07It's called Stollen.
28:08Stollen.
28:09Stollen.
28:10Stollen, but quick.
28:11Stollen.
28:12Stollen.
28:13Stollen cake.
28:14Meanwhile, after Mabel and Libby survived their stolen cake, Helen is making them some Christmas
28:24treats.
28:25Just one dessert spoon of peanut butter.
28:28That are suitable for dogs.
28:31Smells squimmy.
28:33The dogs are part of the family Christmas.
28:36And this way, they've got their own treats on Christmas Day to open underneath the tree.
28:42And hopefully, they won't attack all these pies on Christmas cake.
28:45Although they're for Christmas Day, every product needs a taste test.
28:50Mabel.
28:51Good girl.
28:52Libby.
28:53Good girl.
28:54They're yummy.
28:55They're lovely little dogs.
28:56More than that.
28:57Mabel.
28:58Libby.
28:59No.
29:00But naughty.
29:01The horse ride across the West Yorkshire Moors has Peter's team flying high in the
29:13Vets' charity challenge.
29:15Gotta do it now.
29:16So Team Julian's daredevil duo, Matt and Lucy.
29:20Alright, let's do it.
29:21Are aiming much, much higher.
29:24The Penryn quarry zipline runs through the breathtaking Welsh mountains of Snowdonia.
29:33I actually didn't realise how high that big zipline actually is.
29:38No, I didn't either.
29:39It's the longest zipline in Europe.
29:42And fastest in the world.
29:45At speeds of over 100 miles an hour, you're more like a comet than Rudolph.
29:52But at Christmas, comet costumes aren't as easy to find.
29:59Hello.
30:00Hi.
30:01We thought we'd look silly if we dressed up as Santa.
30:03Because Santa doesn't do the flying.
30:05Here we go.
30:06Oh my word.
30:07Complete with a red nose.
30:08Aw, yeah.
30:09Well, good luck.
30:11Don't let go, whatever you do.
30:12And definitely don't die.
30:14Absolutely not.
30:16Our charity of choice is the RSPCA.
30:19As vets and vet nurses, we've been working with them for our entire career.
30:23They're an absolute fantastic group of people and look after every creature, great and small.
30:28Are we all excited?
30:29Yeah.
30:30On we go.
30:31Let's go.
30:32As Team Julian, we are trying and hoping that we do beat Team Peter.
30:39The charity hack has done very well.
30:41Over £1,200.
30:42I know it's off the charity, we're all raising money, but I really want to win.
30:46The two Rudolfs are heading up to a 500-foot launch point, from where they'll fly down the one-mile zipline.
30:54Oh my gosh.
30:55Oh, lovely.
30:56We're going hard.
30:57We're going hard.
31:02Nice job.
31:03A little bit more nervous now that I'm at the top.
31:06However, I've got to get down one way or the other, so I might as well go that way.
31:10It's the quickest way down, you know.
31:12Three, die, in.
31:13Whoa!
31:14Right, no turning back now.
31:17We're next up.
31:19A little bit anxious now.
31:21There's a degree of adrenaline.
31:23Not gonna lie.
31:24Ready?
31:25Okay.
31:26Oh my gosh.
31:29Okay.
31:30Now I see it.
31:32It's a long way down.
31:34I just hope everything's attached.
31:36Oh.
31:37Wow.
31:38Okay.
31:40You all right there, Lucy?
31:41Yeah, are you?
31:42No.
31:43You'll be fine, Matt.
31:46Once the checks are complete.
31:48Yes, yes.
31:49We are good to go.
31:50Suit is up.
31:51The final countdown begins.
31:54Oh my lord, have mercy.
31:56In Welsh.
31:57Three, die, in.
32:00S***!
32:01Oi, oi!
32:02Eggs!
32:03Eggs!
32:04Christ!
32:05Ah!
32:07Oh wow!
32:08I've fucked up!
32:09I've fucked up!
32:10I've fucked up!
32:11I've fucked up!
32:12I've fucked up!
32:13I've fucked up!
32:17I can see our reflection, Lucy!
32:19I can see it's all the same for me!
32:21Woohoo!
32:22Woohoo!
32:23Woohoo!
32:24Woohoo!
32:25Woohoo!
32:26Woohoo!
32:27Woohoo!
32:28Woohoo!
32:29Woohoo!
32:30Woohoo!
32:31Woohoo!
32:32Woohoo!
32:33Woohoo!
32:34Grab hold of the pole for me!
32:35Nice and tight!
32:36Grab hold of the pole!
32:37Oh my god!
32:38That was incredible!
32:39That's insane!
32:40Woohoo!
32:41There we go.
32:42Stand up.
32:43Ah!
32:44Wow!
32:45That was something else.
32:46The sheer terror as it lets you go but then it's like this is incredible!
32:50Thank you!
32:51We're alive!
32:57Well done guys!
32:58How was it?
32:59Very fast!
33:00But a lot of fun!
33:01We do a countdown in 3, 2, 1 and in Welsh I can't remember what it is but number 2 is die!
33:06And they really make sure they give it some welly you know.
33:083, die!
33:091!
33:10You're off!
33:11We'll be heading into the lead with the same speed that you were heading down that zipline!
33:16Yep!
33:17Definitely!
33:18We're gaining 2 Peter!
33:19Yeah!
33:20We're gonna win!
33:21Bye!
33:22All right!
33:23Well done!
33:24Cheers!
33:25Bye!
33:26Bye-bye!
33:27Still to come...
33:28This is a winning garment!
33:29Really?
33:30Oh yes!
33:31Whose Christmas jumper will come out on top?
33:33Give it up for the Christmas jumper face off!
33:37Good luck everybody!
33:38Oh gosh!
33:39Okay!
33:49With Christmas just around the corner, Yorkshire folk are in a festive mood.
33:58But the vets have been elbow deep in Christmas spirit.
34:01What do you do on Christmas, Stephen?
34:03Long dream!
34:04For weeks.
34:05There's knitting groups throughout Yorkshire that are getting the needles out now as we
34:10speak.
34:11Lots of work has gone into an animal charity fundraising event where handcrafted decorations
34:17will be among the many things on offer.
34:20What do you think about those bad boys?
34:22Oh my God!
34:23Wow!
34:24Julian's also had to treat himself to an early woolly present.
34:29The dogs might chew them.
34:31The dogs might...
34:32Well that's what's happened to my old pair.
34:33The dog chewed them so they're falling to pieces.
34:37And his Christmas jumper competition with Peter is all in aid of dogs who need an owner's
34:43slipper to chew.
34:45It's to help the Dogs Trust find homes for the likes of Doris the Jack Russell.
34:50Doris had had a really nasty injury.
34:54She was pregnant as well.
34:56She was pretty rough really.
34:57Little Doris is now doted on by new owner Michael and his dad George.
35:05Have a seat.
35:06Well I can't have that one can I?
35:08Who might just need her.
35:11Thank you very much.
35:13Lovely.
35:14As much as she needs them.
35:17She's settled them well.
35:19She's settled them very well hasn't she?
35:21What made you go to the Dogs Trust looking for a dog?
35:24Well mainly because I lost my wife 18 months ago and my mum just over a year ago.
35:30Yeah.
35:31Myself and my son have been kind of struggling.
35:33The grief.
35:34They are probably the two most important people in your life.
35:38My first love and my forever love yeah.
35:40Yeah.
35:43You can't replace your mother.
35:45You can't replace your wife.
35:48But dogs do offer an awful lot.
35:51Absolutely.
35:52It's only evenings sitting in my chair just you know beside me.
35:55Yeah.
35:56You know she's feeling comfortable and I feel comforted with her being there.
35:59Yes.
36:00She's a wonderful little thing and you know after what she's been through she's so loving
36:05and I just think the love of an animal is the best therapy.
36:10There is a saying a dog is for life not just for Christmas.
36:14There's absolutely no doubt that Doris is here for the rest of her days isn't she?
36:19Absolutely.
36:20To have little Doris there on a Christmas morning will just give us a lift I think.
36:25I'm sure it will.
36:26I've got a few good little presents.
36:29So you've taught Father Christmas what to bring already then?
36:31Absolutely.
36:32Father Christmas has been written to and it's been posted.
36:36She's great for us and just what we need.
36:39You are very gentle aren't you?
36:48Is that nice Doris?
36:49Are you?
36:50To help the Dogs Trust do more vital work at Cannon Hall Farm it's the day of the big
37:04fundraising party with preparations in full swing for a Christmas market and jumper competition.
37:11While at the practice in Wetherby Julian's trying to remember what happened at the staff Christmas party.
37:20There weren't that many of us out there were there? Do you remember?
37:23Actually I don't remember.
37:25No you don't. I'm not surprised you don't remember.
37:27You can't remember because you were obliterated. I wasn't. I actually knew what was going on.
37:31Because you asked me how to get Uber but you were past an Uber at that point.
37:36Julian now needs a taxi to get him to the charity event.
37:40With Lucy following him over once her shift is finished.
37:44Come on.
37:45They have to man their team's stall with Matt.
37:50Oh nuts.
37:51And the other nurse Lucy.
37:53Ay ay ay.
37:54Sausage fingers.
37:56Well the big night has finally arrived.
37:58The room is jam packed with people ready to spend lots of money on all the Christmas gifts.
38:04We've got a very nice selection. I'm loving the theme as well.
38:07Emmy.
38:08My Emmy.
38:09Yay.
38:10By the end of the evening I think it'll have all gone.
38:13And I have to say from what I've seen of the opposition.
38:16We're definitely going to win.
38:17Good stuff. Well time will tell.
38:18Right. We're all for trading.
38:19Ready.
38:21Whilst Julian's Christmas jumper design is on all his products.
38:25Peter's keeping his contender very much under wraps.
38:29This is a winning garment.
38:31Really?
38:32Oh yes.
38:33His team have a more handcrafted stall.
38:36That's perfect.
38:38Local knitting groups have put all this together.
38:41But even at Christmas.
38:42Santa's left his pyjamas on the line as well.
38:44Those are lovely.
38:45Those are lovely.
38:46Working at a vet surgery can mean unpredictable hours.
38:50Oh.
38:52Sorry mate everyone. How's it going?
38:53It's alright.
38:54I do apologise.
38:55I'm not pleased to see you.
38:56I've just spent all afternoon and evening emptying anal glands.
38:59Could you smell it?
39:01We need to get this stall open and get selling.
39:03Roll up, roll up.
39:04Buy our festive merchandise here.
39:07Here.
39:08Can we interest you in anything?
39:09These are really cute.
39:10I like them.
39:11There you go.
39:12The tea towel.
39:14Thank you very much.
39:15If you're after hats, look.
39:16Wow.
39:17There's a lot in here.
39:18Hats is one thing we can do.
39:19The atmosphere here is absolutely buzzing.
39:21We've got two teams competing against each other.
39:24What would you like to buy?
39:25Two pants please.
39:26Of course.
39:27Would you like a bag with that one?
39:28There we are.
39:29Merry Christmas.
39:31But whoever wins tonight, the winner is going to be the charity.
39:35It's a fantastic cause and I'm really, really pleased to be here.
39:38That's a bargain at £8, that one.
39:40Good word, David.
39:41Lovely jubbly.
39:42Thank you very much.
39:43How are you?
39:44Mr Norm.
39:45Happy Christmas.
39:46Happy Christmas.
39:47There's some great stuff.
39:48Look at this.
39:49Have a look at this.
39:50You can get tea towels, mugs, Christmas cards.
39:53Well, you need to come down and have a look at our stall as well.
39:56How are the prices?
39:57Are they?
39:58Very competitive.
39:59Very competitive.
40:00Very competitive.
40:01£1,000.
40:02As a special offer, we'll do it for £1.
40:04Good luck.
40:05May the best team win.
40:07Thanks so much.
40:08Absolutely.
40:09Thank you for coming.
40:10Selling on the stalls at the right price.
40:12No, no, that's £40, not £4.
40:14Is going well.
40:15It's a great way to raise money for charity.
40:17While Rob and Dave are the auctioneers.
40:20With one item.
40:21It's unique.
40:22There will never be another.
40:24A Norton original.
40:25I literally did all of that myself.
40:27£400 down there.
40:29£400 quid?
40:31£6.50.
40:32When Julian's artist friend Lucy Pitaway helped him swap pets for pastels.
40:38£800.
40:39He'd never have imagined.
40:43£900 for the last time.
40:46£900.
40:47A bidding war.
40:49Up to nearly £1,000.
40:51The gavel is about to go.
40:53Congratulations.
40:54And with the Christmas jumper competition about to start.
41:00Thank you very much.
41:01You're well done.
41:02The shocks keep on coming.
41:04We're going to be commentating as you strut your stuff on that catwalk.
41:09Catwalk?
41:10You're one at models, Dave.
41:12But team Julian are a model short.
41:15So no Lucy tonight?
41:16She's not here?
41:17No.
41:18She's stuck at work.
41:19So they've recruited someone who's always happy.
41:22It might be a tight fit this.
41:24To strut his stuff.
41:26Look at them!
41:27Well, thank you for coming on our team.
41:29Well, my pleasure.
41:30You're a man down.
41:32Just like Julian's jumper featuring Emmy.
41:35If this doesn't win, I'd be really surprised.
41:38The design Peter's been keeping close to his chest.
41:42Look at these.
41:43Like in this colour scheme.
41:45Honour's a dog very close to his heart.
41:48This is a nod to my dog that I lost a couple of years ago.
41:52Alf.
41:53It was a boxer.
41:54When Lynn sees that, she'll tear up.
41:56What a special way to remember him.
41:59Are we ready, everybody?
42:00Anyone nervous about the catwalk?
42:02Me.
42:03Yeah.
42:04I think I'd genuinely rather do ten castrates on stage than walk down there.
42:08Don't fall off the end.
42:09Try it off.
42:10Don't say that.
42:11Oh, no.
42:12Right.
42:13Let's go and smash this thing.
42:14Just come here.
42:15There we go.
42:17Give it up for the Christmas jumper face-off.
42:22Good luck, everybody.
42:23Good luck.
42:24Oh, gosh.
42:25Okay.
42:26Have a good luck.
42:27After Peter and Julian lead from the front, everyone needs to channel their inner Naomi Campbell.
42:37or John Travolta.
42:50And Dave's not the only one with a few moves.
43:01Who needs New York, Milan or Paris when you have Barnsley?
43:07Where the audience has been treated to a display of Yorkshire Vette canine chic.
43:15Well done, guys. Well done, team.
43:18We've got a fill in the bag.
43:20But Rob has the unenviable task of picking a winner.
43:24I declare that Christmas is the winner, that charity is the winner, that it's a draw.
43:31Very, very diplomatic. Well done. Well done.
43:35They're both outstanding, and I'd like to thank everyone for raising so much money
43:41and for having such a wonderful night, a night we'll all never forget.
43:45Brilliant. Thank you.
43:47With the jumper competition too tight to call...
43:50Well done.
43:52...the overall team totals are almost neck and neck, too.
43:56Well done, everybody.
43:57It was probably a fair result, I think.
43:59Yeah.
44:00Through selling, auctioning, horse riding and zip lining...
44:03...nearly eight and a half thousand pounds has been raised for multiple animal charities this Christmas.
44:11Well, I think it's been a fantastic evening.
44:15The draw was probably the fair result.
44:19I think you're right, and each of our jumpers has merit.
44:22That's Emmy on there, isn't it?
44:23My little Emmy, yeah, there she is.
44:25An elf.
44:25Oh, is that elf?
44:26An elf, yeah.
44:27It's my old elf.
44:28Yeah.
44:30You know, everybody's gone away with a smile on their face, haven't they?
44:32That's what it's all about, yeah.
44:34Well done.
44:35Happy Christmas.
44:35Happy Christmas.
44:36Happy Christmas.
45:06Happy Christmas.
45:07Happy Christmas.
