00:00Supporters of conservative candidate Nasri Afsfura celebrated Wednesday night as he had
00:06just been declared winner of the presidency by the country's electoral council.
00:10Papi is the man Honduras needs. Papi Nasri Afsfura.
00:16The race was so tight that results were delayed for three weeks after technical delays and
00:20accusations of fraud. Both he and center-right candidate Salvador Nasralla had previously
00:26claimed victory in the November 30th election. Afsfura won by a razor-thin margin of just
00:320.8 percent and reacted to the victory on X.
00:38Honduras, I am ready to govern. I won't let you down.
00:45He was endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened consequences if the voting count
00:50was further delayed or obstructed. Some, including Nasralla, say Trump's endorsement amounts to
00:56election interference. The son of Palestinian immigrants, Afsfura dropped out of university
01:02to start what would become one of the country's largest construction companies. Then, serving
01:08twice as mayor of Tegucigalpa from 2014 to 2022, he made his mark with major infrastructure projects,
01:15and was accused of embezzling municipal funds, though the Supreme Court decided not to try
01:19the case. Often seen in jeans and dusty boots, he promised work and more work in his campaign
01:26speeches. And after his win, the U.S. Secretary of State called on the country to accept the
01:31result on X.
01:35The people of Honduras have spoken. Nasri Asfura is Honduras' next president. The United States
01:41congratulates president-elect Asfura and looks forward to working with his administration
01:46to advance prosperity and security in our hemisphere.
01:52With far-right Chilean president-elect José Antonio Cast, Asfura is the second conservative
01:57Trump-endorsed candidate to win an election in a South American country where the incumbent
02:02is progressive.
