Conservative candidate backed by Trump leads Honduras' presidential vote

00:00With an early vote count in, it looks like Honduras is the latest Latin American country to swing to the right.

00:07Nasri Asfura currently leads the ballot, although the results won't be finalized until more votes are tallied.

00:14During the campaign, Asfura highlighted his experience as the former mayor of Tegucigalpa,

00:21pointing to popular infrastructure projects completed during his tenure.

00:24The 67-year-old also benefited from the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump, support he welcomed publicly.

00:35Donald Trump is the most powerful president in the world.

00:39I imagine he is the most informed man in the world.

00:42And if he has information about how things are in Honduras, it is a personal opinion that he expressed there, and I simply respect it.

00:50Ahead of the vote, Trump said Asfura was the only candidate he would work with,

00:56and threatened to withdraw financial support from the country if he didn't win.

01:01It's just the latest example of the U.S. president attempting to exert influence in the region.

01:07Trump used similar tactics in recent elections in Argentina.

01:11Some voters criticized what they see as his meddling in their country's domestic affairs.

01:16It's very unfortunate that Donald Trump is trying to convince Hondurans like this,

01:22because to me it feels like interference.

01:26Trying to play with the feelings or decisions of the Honduran people.

01:32On Friday, Trump announced a surprise move to pardon the country's former president, Juan Orlando Hernandez,

01:38who's currently serving time in the U.S. on drug charges.

01:43Shocking many Hondurans for seeming to go against his war on drug trafficking.
