00:00Under the watchful eye of the military, Honduras is preparing to elect its new president.
00:06And three candidates are neck and neck.
00:09Rixi Moncada is on the bill for the ruling left party.
00:13Former television star Salvador Nasralla is representing the centre-right.
00:17Then there's Nasri S. FĂĽhrer, a former mayor and conservative populist.
00:23Each has a shot of winning, and each has fanned allegations of voter fraud against the others.
00:30But this resident hopes democracy will prevail.
00:34I hope that everyone is peaceful, that this becomes a civic celebration,
00:39because this is an opportunity given to us to exercise our vote.
00:45The central American country is battling poverty, a rising cost of living, corruption and crime.
00:53Issues that are front of mind for voters.
00:56The cost of busy goods has been very high,
00:59and before we were able to get by.
01:02But now, I hope that whoever takes office will govern well.
01:08There's a lot of crime on the streets, a lot of theft,
01:10many unemployed people, including youths and elderly.
01:14Moncada has advocated to democratise the economy and reform the justice system.
01:19Nasralla says he will root out corruption
01:21and is pushing for more private investment in jobs and education,
01:25while S. FĂĽhrer wants to restore the rule of law.
01:30However, their platforms were overshadowed in recent days by the U.S. President Donald Trump,
01:35who endorsed S. FĂĽhrer and vowed to pardon convicted drug trafficker
01:39and ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez of the same party.
01:44Experts are unsure whether it will help or hinder the Conservative Party's chances.
