00:00Daughter, Pella. The cottage is her little design project.
00:03This is what we ordered, and their new tile is lighter green.
00:07Oh, no.
00:08I was afraid to show you, but I knew I had to.
00:09I have to see it.
00:10Steve's going to be our connection point to get this project finished.
00:13I wanted to point out we had a visitor.
00:16Oh, my gosh. It's a bear.
00:18Any major hiccup, what are you thinking?
00:20The fireplace has me up at night because it's in zoning.
00:24That's not what it's supposed to look like.
00:25The biggest variable is the fireplace.
00:27Other than that, I feel like it's smooth sailing from here,
00:31but I shouldn't have said that out loud.
00:32Sounds like I get to keep both my fireplaces.
00:35You're going to jinx yourself?
00:36I don't want to jinx myself.
00:37Let's go.
00:39Oh, I love me somehow.
00:46What makes the mountain house so unique and perfect for our family
00:49is that it's got three distinct structures,
00:52and it finally feels like we're getting close on all of them.
00:54It's got the main house, which now has all of this beautiful wood
00:58that's blending perfectly.
01:00And then there's the large cottage,
01:01which is looking great with the new plaster that we added.
01:04And then the tiny cottage.
01:06This is the cottage that really spoke to Ella.
01:09So she's designed it.
01:11The paint, the wallpaper, all of that is done.
01:14Now it's just the little things that are going to really make it feel special.
01:19And today we're hoping to find some treasures
01:20at one of our favorite stores in Waco.
01:23LFUC art, trays for your coffee table,
01:26a holder for your soap, you know, just like anything.
01:30I don't really use bar soap, but...
01:32Oh.
01:34Well, you should.
01:35You can use this plate.
01:36It's like the ruffle, but do you think that it's too much ruffle?
01:41No.
01:41And we should change it up?
01:42As I'm saying both.
01:43Oh.
01:44So you have a pairing, you know?
01:45Mm-hmm.
01:46We found a lot of these really cool little treasures
01:48that are going to be perfect in Ella's space.
01:56Since Ella's starting college in a month,
01:58today is a really important day
02:00to just nail down all of the final details to this little cottage.
02:03So we taped out the exact measurements.
02:06I wanted Ella to be able to see
02:07how the selections that she chose for the space work in it.
02:11So we have a plan to work off of.
02:14What made you go green and blue?
02:16That's so fun and unexpected, and I love that.
02:18I want it to feel like cozy and a little bit darker.
02:21Yeah.
02:21But then the kitchen to feel more like light.
02:23Yeah.
02:24So that's why we went with the cream.
02:26But then the green cabinets to tie it all together.
02:29You did a really good job.
02:30Ella has always been, from early on,
02:34very interested in design,
02:35but also just has that natural instinct.
02:37Now that we've got all the dimensions,
02:40this is a lot smaller than I remember.
02:45Here's your settee.
02:47Thoughts on lamp and rug?
02:49I like the lamp.
02:50Okay.
02:51I like the little ruffly things.
02:53Okay.
02:53But it might be a little bit tall.
02:55That's what I'm nervous about.
02:56I do wonder if we get a plan B for the lamp.
02:58Mm-hmm.
02:58Trying to find one that's more the scale of the settee.
03:01How do you like the settee?
03:03I like it.
03:03I think it looks good.
03:04And then with your fireplace here,
03:07the little nook that you created here,
03:09this may be a little big.
03:10Let's see what this looks like.
03:12I just love the legs.
03:16I think that's cute.
03:17She has found a way to make the space
03:20feel so dreamy and cozy.
03:22When it's a small space,
03:23you always hear people say,
03:24paint it light to make it bigger.
03:26Well, you chose to go dark.
03:28You kind of bucked the rules
03:30and said that this is what I want.
03:33It's fun to see her come into her own style.
03:36On your first design project,
03:38you really stepped out
03:40to kind of just teach me something,
03:43which is like,
03:44don't be afraid in a tiny space to go big.
03:47And I love it because I feel like it's you.
03:51It's the cutest little space.
03:54And crew is going to love it.
03:55Mm-hmm.
04:07It's been about three weeks
04:08since our last trip to Colorado,
04:10and we've made a ton of progress.
04:12Most of the drywall is up.
04:15We started installing the oak paneling
04:18on the ceilings and the walls
04:19throughout the house.
04:21We added the trim
04:22in that primary bedroom,
04:24and the parquet floors
04:26went into the reading room.
04:28We're still waiting on those permits
04:30for the fireplaces,
04:31but we're really moving forward.
04:33It's just a fun day to be here
04:35and to see all of this activity.
04:37We got a lot going on,
04:39so get ready to enter the beehive.
04:41Oh, man.
04:42Oh, hi, guys.
04:43Hey, Steve.
04:44Steve.
04:44You made it home.
04:45Yes, sir.
04:46Home sweet home.
04:47How you doing?
04:48Good, good.
04:48This is good.
04:48Beautiful.
04:49Didn't it turn out sweet?
04:51Yeah.
04:51Look at this wood.
04:51Turned out great, man.
04:53I knew I wanted to do, like,
04:54a special treatment in that foyer
04:55where it's kind of like,
04:56hey, you got a small space.
04:58I wanted to make it feel
04:59a little extra special,
05:00a little more intentional.
05:01So we did this, like,
05:03stair-step install with the wood.
05:05I can't believe it.
05:06I love it.
05:07Yeah.
05:07This feels special.
05:09How hard to do this downstairs.
05:11Like, I know we didn't plan for it,
05:13but anywhere where I'm doing this wood,
05:15this is going to feel dramatic.
05:17Because even looking up,
05:18but knowing the walls will be like that,
05:20there's almost no dimension.
05:22Do you want to see the old tongue and groove?
05:23Show what you're wanting to show us in here.
05:25So this is the tongue and groove
05:26that we were originally going to go with.
05:28Compare this to the stair-step
05:30or the step entryway.
05:31I just feel like if you could add
05:33that little piece,
05:34it would just make it richer.
05:36So my question to Steve was,
05:37do we have enough material
05:38to accomplish this downstairs
05:40and in the main living and kitchen area?
05:42You just say you can or you can't,
05:44and I'll just get over it.
05:44I can do it.
05:45How's that?
05:45Because the tongue and groove,
05:47we can use as this.
05:48So we're not losing material,
05:50and we're not going to have to buy new material.
05:52Awesome.
05:53Steve is, like, so nice.
05:55Love this guy.
05:56He's like, not only do I have enough material.
05:58Contractors are built to say no.
06:00You have to force a contractor
06:02to get to the yes.
06:03We'll get more bang for a buck
06:05doing it like this.
06:06At the very beginning,
06:07I didn't know to say no.
06:09So when she asked for something,
06:11I said yes.
06:12And I was romantically involved
06:14with this woman.
06:14So in some ways,
06:15I was trying to impress her
06:16every step of the way.
06:18But it was like,
06:19Steve is just kind of like that.
06:20He's like, let's do it.
06:21I do want to see the reading nook.
06:25Well, that's dramatic.
06:27Ooh, Steve.
06:28This is that floor that you sent me.
06:31Yes.
06:31It's so beautiful.
06:33Wanted to get our eyes on the flooring
06:35and the little reading nook.
06:36It's this beautiful reclaimed parquet flooring.
06:39I really wanted to add texture
06:40and more story
06:41next to all the simpler paneling.
06:43Love this place.
06:44It's like, man,
06:44these old floors really look like
06:46you've stepped back in time.
06:47It does, yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:48Well, let's go look at the primary.
06:50Yes, sir.
06:51So we're just about done
06:52with your primary.
06:53Oh, my gosh.
06:55Gorgeous.
06:56The trim in the primary,
06:58it felt like this beautiful reveal.
07:00I hadn't seen it fully installed.
07:02The goal was you see a little feminine,
07:04you see a little masculine detail.
07:06You've got the beams that are masculine,
07:07you have the wood
07:08that feels more textured,
07:09but then you have the little arch detail
07:11that makes it feel
07:11a little more cottage feminine.
07:13It's almost all masculine.
07:14You haven't seen it done.
07:16All you're looking at
07:17are the big shiny things.
07:18Are you going to screw it up
07:19from here out?
07:20Is that what you're trying
07:21to imply here?
07:21A little balance of me
07:22and a little balance
07:23of the ginger right here.
07:24Joe, remember last time
07:25we were here
07:26and that artist was sitting there
07:27hand painting these beams?
07:29It was like unbelievable.
07:30He was so meticulous,
07:31giving it the illusion of cracks.
07:33This really was least
07:35least expensive option.
07:36Yeah.
07:37It just looks super sharp
07:38and the space, super tiny
07:40and we already knew
07:41it was going to be tiny,
07:42but it's going to work.
07:43This wide-case opening
07:44gives you that illusion
07:45that it feels bigger.
07:46A hundred percent.
07:48It's awesome.
07:49So we have three samples
07:50on the deck
07:51for you guys to look at
07:52and plus we have
07:53your window box up.
07:54Yep, the window box
07:55looks really good.
07:56This is obviously
07:57going to patina over time,
07:59but I think this color...
08:00Yeah, I'd go the darker route.
08:02Yeah, so there's your answer.
08:04Sign.
08:04Easy.
08:05Okay.
08:05Darker than lighter.
08:06Bare fence.
08:07Bare fence.
08:08The artist,
08:09you did all seal work,
08:09going to design us a gate
08:11with metal,
08:12kind of going with
08:13the stair rail
08:13and like a normal man gate.
08:16If you think something
08:17simple and minimal...
08:19Those null posts
08:19at the end,
08:20we're going to go
08:21at 42 inches.
08:22We'll keep the bear out.
08:24Hey, Steve,
08:25what do you think
08:25about us building
08:26a fire pit down here
08:27by the river?
08:28It'd be fun
08:28to incorporate
08:29some little quirky
08:30patio sitting area.
08:32Oh, okay.
08:33I hope the bear gate works.
08:35And with this new fire pit,
08:36we have a lot to accomplish
08:38in the next six weeks,
08:39but it feels like
08:40everything's coming together
08:41and we have a few more days
08:42here to finalize details
08:44for the rest of the house.
08:53Oh, good.
08:53I really wanted
08:54to see these cabinets.
08:55I know.
08:56They've gotten a lot done.
08:57They're so pretty.
08:58I love the vent hood.
09:00I love the scale.
09:02Today's the walkthrough
09:03of the kitchen.
09:04The more I started thinking
09:05about what this home
09:05would become,
09:06it was really around
09:08the kitchen.
09:08You know,
09:0915 to 20 people
09:10could be here at one time
09:11and so the existing kitchen
09:13was not conducive
09:13to what I knew
09:14we were wanting to create.
09:16The cabinets are
09:16halfway installed
09:17and they look very lodgy.
09:19Like, I like the way
09:20that that's coming together.
09:21It's just finalizing
09:22the floor stain.
09:23Okay.
09:24That feels too orange.
09:26Wondering if they can come
09:27in with a bleach
09:28so it just feels
09:29a little more natural.
09:29Okay.
09:30Because it's making
09:32that look green.
09:33It is.
09:34The backsplash
09:34is about to get installed
09:35because we finally received
09:37those hand-painted tiles.
09:39This is the new batch
09:40of tile.
09:40They did try
09:41to eliminate
09:42some of the variation
09:43and darken
09:44and richen the color.
09:45So I think
09:46it turned out good.
09:47Okay.
09:47The tile has been
09:48one of those things
09:49where the color variation
09:50has been a bit of an issue
09:52but I saw the tile today.
09:53It's beautiful.
09:54It's a lighter green
09:55but it's still gonna be pretty.
09:56I mean,
09:56I feel like it's gonna
09:57still play off
09:57of what's happening
09:58on the outside of the windows.
09:59This was meant
10:00to be the kitchen all along.
10:01Oh, that's crazy.
10:02Moving that kitchen
10:03from where it was
10:04into this living room
10:05feels natural.
10:06I cannot wait
10:07to get to cooking in there
10:08and having that huge table
10:10right down the middle.
10:11Looks so nice
10:12with the windows.
10:15It's looking awesome.
10:16I know that when we leave
10:17it's in good hands.
10:19When we get back to Texas
10:20the biggest thing
10:21on my list is furniture.
10:22I really want to find
10:23the perfect dining table
10:24for the kitchen.
10:30We're back in Texas
10:31and I'm on the hunt
10:32for some big furniture pieces
10:33for the main house
10:34and Round Top.
10:35I love this little detail.
10:38I love finding older pieces
10:40with tons of character
10:41and giving them new lies.
10:43Mixing new stuff
10:44with antique accents
10:45creates great design moments
10:47for almost any project.
10:49Good news.
10:50We found a dining table.
10:52I think out of everything
10:53we were looking for
10:54the table was the thing
10:55we thought we were gonna
10:56have to custom build.
10:59It's gonna be right down
11:00the center of the kitchen.
11:02It's like over 40 inches wide
11:04which is perfect.
11:05So I think this will seat
11:06about 12
11:07and we love it.
11:10It's been a long day.
11:11I have no other words to say
11:13except it's been very successful.
11:19So it's almost time
11:20for Ella to head off to college.
11:22We finished the styling plan
11:23for her cottage
11:24but there's one last
11:26finishing touch
11:26I want to work on
11:27right before she leaves.
11:28I love this little shelf, Ella.
11:31The scallop I think
11:31is really sweet
11:33and I also know
11:33you love mugs and cups.
11:34So we needed a place
11:36to put those on the walls.
11:38Today Ella and I
11:39are doing a little makeover
11:41on a piece that will go
11:42in the kitchen pantry
11:43in our cottage.
11:44We found this cute
11:45little vintage scallop shelf
11:46but she didn't love
11:47the color or the finish
11:48and so today we're painting it.
11:50This is where I want you
11:51to decide
11:52do you want to paint it green
11:53the color of your cabinets
11:54or do you paint it cream
11:55the color of the wall?
11:57I think I like the cream.
11:59Perfect.
12:02Ella, this is what
12:03I used to do
12:03the early days of Magnolia
12:05where I was painting everything
12:06and then sanding it.
12:08I loved that
12:09I could take an old piece
12:11and just put a little paint on it
12:12and a little
12:13like I would say
12:14the fairy dusting
12:15of the sanding
12:15and watching that
12:16fly off the shelves
12:17because I think
12:17that's what people love.
12:18They love that story
12:19and that character.
12:21I don't want it to be perfect
12:22so I'm just kind of
12:23coming in.
12:25And you want it perfect?
12:27Well, do you?
12:31It's like a little bit
12:31cleaner strokes.
12:33Cleaner strokes.
12:34Okay.
12:35I love that
12:36she's taking control
12:37and she has no problem
12:39telling me
12:39this is what she wants.
12:41I keep telling Chip
12:42oh she's going to come back
12:42and be my boss.
12:44I'm a little scared.
12:46I'll show you
12:47how I like to just
12:48sand some of the edges
12:49and to let that wood
12:50come through
12:51so it doesn't look like
12:51a piece someone
12:52just built for you.
12:53Once this is dry
12:55you're going to come in
12:56and you're going to do it
12:57just like naturally.
12:59Like hey
12:59where would a distress be?
13:01Does that make sense?
13:02Uh huh.
13:05Getting to do this
13:06with her right before
13:07she goes off to college
13:08feels really meaningful
13:09especially on a project
13:11like this
13:11that does feel
13:12so much about family
13:14and being together.
13:15She's going off to college
13:16in one week
13:17I'm going to be
13:19a freaking mess.
13:20Okay
13:21I can't wait
13:23to see your art project
13:24Ella.
13:26I'll see you soon.
13:32We're in Colorado
13:32for just a few days
13:34to check on everything
13:34one last time
13:35before we come back
13:36for staging.
13:37There's a lot of things
13:38happening on the cabins
13:40and then the main house.
13:42Right before we left Waco
13:43we got some really good news
13:44from Steve.
13:45Yeah I wanted to let you know
13:47we were able to
13:48finally receive the permit
13:49for the fireplace.
13:49That is awesome.
13:51So now all the masonry
13:52for the fireplaces
13:53can start going in
13:54and the additional
13:55stair step paneling
13:56I asked Steve for
13:57has gone up.
13:59In the small cottage
14:00we added the arched
14:01openings Ella wanted
14:02for a more feminine
14:03feel to the space
14:04and today
14:05Chip is installing
14:06the cutie tile
14:07that Ella picked out.
14:09Ella left
14:10for college
14:11a week ago.
14:12Okay here we are
14:13we're doing all
14:14the finishing touches
14:15on Ella's door
14:16Ella is done
14:18setting up
14:19her little coffee
14:19bar cart.
14:21Ella how do you feel?
14:23Good.
14:23You feel good?
14:24Mm-hmm.
14:26Hi Chip.
14:26Hi babe.
14:27Oh wow
14:28that's cute.
14:29As I got to
14:30unpacking this
14:31I am not gonna lie
14:33I was a tad surprised
14:34about the color
14:35uh palette.
14:36I mean literally
14:37maroon.
14:38It's burgundy.
14:39A&M Aggies
14:40have no place
14:41in any project
14:42that I've ever been
14:43a part of in my life.
14:44I think these
14:45aren't ours.
14:46This is Ella's project.
14:48She wanted some color.
14:49Ella's tile selection
14:50she's got maroon
14:52baby blue
14:53mixed into this template.
14:55There's no Baylor green
14:56there's no Baylor gold.
14:57She didn't go
14:58to Baylor University
14:59her mom and I's
15:00alma mater.
15:01So he feels a little bit
15:02betrayed.
15:05Hi Ella
15:05do you have a second?
15:06Uh-huh.
15:07He's laying your tile.
15:09Do you like it?
15:10I think that looks good.
15:11But you know
15:12what's not right?
15:13Maroon tile babe.
15:15Ella for real.
15:18Yeah.
15:18It reminds him
15:19of a certain college
15:20Ella.
15:21Ella do you feel
15:21guilty at all?
15:23No I like it.
15:26Oh yeah she's
15:27gotta go.
15:27Oh okay I love you
15:28Ella Rose.
15:29You did great.
15:29I'm only kidding.
15:30Wait I'm gonna show you
15:31one more thing.
15:31Ready?
15:32Look at your arches.
15:33Isn't that cute?
15:35I like those.
15:36I know.
15:36Hey babe tell Ella
15:37I'm sorry and to come back.
15:38Okay.
15:39Okay Ella love you so much.
15:41Okay love you.
15:42Bye.
15:43She had to eat her lunch.
15:46The fact that I'm getting
15:48to install some of the tile
15:49that she had a part in
15:50selecting is the sweet
15:51daddy moment.
15:52Here we are sending our
15:54little girl off to an
15:55entirely different city
15:57and I feel proud.
15:58Jo doesn't want to hear
15:59it.
16:00She only wants to hear
16:01hold me.
16:03Hey but I'm like getting
16:04better every day.
16:06This is like risky.
16:07Like I'm glad that she
16:08took a couple of chances.
16:09I feel like I'm
16:10learning from her.
16:11Babe I'm so proud of
16:12you both.
16:12Good job.
16:13Okay.
16:13Alright I'll get it done.
16:20Man it's been a great
16:21week.
16:22A lot has been going on
16:23downstairs in the main
16:24house.
16:25The wallpaper is starting
16:27to go up in the bunk
16:28room.
16:28We're laying the tile in
16:30the bunk room bathroom.
16:33Down by the river we've
16:34been working on that fire
16:36pit that I'm really
16:36excited about.
16:37And we're hustling to
16:40get the foundation for
16:41both of these fireplaces
16:42completed on the
16:43exterior.
16:45Wow.
16:47Look at this y'all.
16:49Coming together.
16:50That's massive.
16:52Yeah.
16:52It's a big thing.
16:53Because we got two
16:54fireplaces.
16:55So they're working on
16:56the foundation on the
16:57outside for the main
16:58fireplaces in the house.
17:00It's crazy to think that
17:01they need that much
17:02support to carry a couple
17:04of fireplaces.
17:05So you're saying upstairs
17:07it'll be more this side
17:08and then downstairs it's
17:09this side.
17:09Correct.
17:10Hence the width.
17:11Yeah.
17:11We're actually going to
17:12angle the chimney flue
17:13under the deck and tie
17:14into this fireplace above.
17:16This is massive concrete
17:17right now.
17:18Wow.
17:18It looks like we're
17:19building a subway
17:20underneath this thing.
17:21Once we get this up
17:22then we can go inside
17:23and do all the veneered
17:24stone and do the fire
17:25brick.
17:25You're good to go.
17:27Heck yeah.
17:27I'm going to go check
17:28out your hard work
17:29downstairs.
17:29Yeah.
17:29Go through the patio.
17:31So we decided to split up.
17:33Chip wanted to see what
17:34Steve had worked on down
17:35the river with the fire pit
17:36and then I wanted to check
17:37on the bunk room
17:38and then a few other
17:39spaces downstairs.
17:41Oh this looks cute.
17:42It's quaint which is
17:43what I wanted.
17:44Bunk beds when are they
17:45coming in?
17:46Bunk beds can be here
17:46in about 11-12 days.
17:49Golly.
17:49This is being made in the
17:50shop and it's going to
17:51come assembled.
17:52So this wall will go
17:54wallpaper we got the
17:55green ceilings and then
17:56you've got the entry into
17:57the bathroom.
17:58Yeah everyone.
17:58Let me see that.
17:59Yep and we'll get in there
18:00and we'll put in some
18:01shelving to fit.
18:02Look at the tile.
18:03So we started putting in
18:04your tile.
18:05It looks so cute.
18:07The bathroom tile wanted
18:08something again a little
18:09more feminine a little
18:10more charming and
18:11cottagey.
18:12I just think it's so
18:12sweet and it's a nice
18:14balance to all the wood on
18:15the walls and even on the
18:16ceiling.
18:17I'd say the downstairs is
18:18about 80% there.
18:20So I just feel like I'm
18:21moving into every space and
18:22I can see the finish line.
18:25Oh man this looks great.
18:28Well done Steve.
18:30Steve this is the spot for
18:32sure.
18:34Joe is going to love it
18:35down here.
18:35It looks great.
18:36This is awesome.
18:38This fire pit and this
18:39awesome flagstone sitting
18:41area.
18:42I can see this being a
18:43really special addition to
18:45our family.
18:46I mean when you think about
18:47memories and time spent with
18:48your family it feels like
18:50there's going to be some
18:51special gains moments that
18:53occur on this property and
18:54for Joe and I we hope to
18:56facilitate a situation like
18:59that you know.
19:01Amen.
19:02Sweet chip.
19:05I was just it must have
19:07been the red weed.
19:11I don't think I've
19:12processed the yellow thing
19:14and I may be processing it
19:15here as we speak for the
19:16first time.
19:17I'm about to cry too.
19:18Seeing the vision seeing the
19:20future and planning for it
19:22that's really been the best
19:23part of this whole project
19:24and we can't wait to come
19:25back in a few weeks to
19:26finish bringing our dream to
19:27life.
19:29Okay Mikey I need your help
19:40with the Colorado indoor
19:43plant vibe.
19:45Construction on the mountain
19:46house is almost finished so
19:48I'm finalizing all the
19:49styling and everything we're
19:51going to be putting in the
19:52house.
19:53The thing I've kind of
19:55waited a little bit on are
19:56plants which I wanted to
19:58source in Waco at one of my
19:59favorite greenhouses.
20:01I wanted Mikey to come with
20:02me today because she's the
20:03plant lady expert of America
20:06and Colorado and Texas.
20:09Right?
20:10Thanks.
20:11The vibe is like cottage meets
20:12mountain lodge.
20:14I think rubber plants feels
20:15good.
20:15I think anything that's
20:16trailing anything that's
20:18sweet.
20:18You love Colorado.
20:20You love the vibes.
20:21I feel like you're going to be
20:22the best.
20:24This one she knows Colorado
20:25pretty well.
20:26Mikey would work there in the
20:27summer.
20:28She'd also play guitar for
20:30money you know and maybe got a
20:34dollar.
20:35She and her friends would like
20:36go with mattresses.
20:38We would boulder and we'd take
20:39our mattress and it would be our
20:41crash pad.
20:42Can you imagine me doing that?
20:44A lot of plants actually adapt.
20:49Plants are just so sweet.
20:50I love plants.
20:52My favorite thing though Mikey
20:54because you have not seen this
20:55place.
20:56There'll be room for all of us.
20:57We never get to actually
20:58vacation together but I feel
21:00like because there's these
21:01little side cottages we could
21:03all fit.
21:04The week that we go to put all
21:06the furniture in you probably
21:08can't come because you have six
21:09kids but if you can come will
21:11you help me?
21:12With the plants?
21:13With the plants or to be our
21:15first official guest.
21:16I would love to.
21:17So if you want I'll tell you
21:18the date and like this will be
21:20fun.
21:21I think this is a good start.
21:24This house just feels like
21:25Mikey's going to love it.
21:27So it feels right that she's
21:28going to be the first to see it
21:30in a few weeks.
21:37We finally finished all of our
21:39preparations in Waco and over
21:40the last few weeks trucks have
21:42made their way to Colorado for
21:44staging at the Mountain House.
21:46The distance has definitely been
21:47a challenge but now that it's
21:48all ready to go I can't wait to
21:50start bringing these spaces to
21:51life.
21:53So it's the first day of staging
21:54at the Mountain House.
21:55So exciting.
21:57I have been waiting for this day
21:59for it feels like a long time.
22:01This reminds me of every other
22:02fixer where we're moving into
22:04rooms that are still not
22:05completely finished.
22:06There's still so many workers in
22:08the house what we're trying to do
22:10just for our minds is maybe try
22:12to finish one room at a time as
22:14far as getting everything hung and
22:16all of the furniture placed but I
22:18love the energy of just the
22:19hustle.
22:21The saw everything about it.
22:23It's like work is happening so
22:25this is where we're at.
22:27This room looks pretty much done.
22:29Look over here.
22:30Peek in here.
22:31Hi.
22:34This I'm not even going to think
22:35about that.
22:36Oh there's a big bear.
22:38Seriously?
22:38I mean big.
22:39I'm not kidding.
22:40You see him right there by the big
22:41rock.
22:41Look at him crossing over.
22:42Oh my gosh.
22:42Oh my gosh.
22:45Oh.
22:46Too bad I'll never go down there.
22:48He's kind of cute.
22:49George you missed it.
22:50They all think it's funny.
22:52It's totally fine.
22:53So I actually forgot what we were
22:55talking about but we're back.
22:56The bear has crossed the river and
22:58there's so much to do I'm just
22:59going to pretend that never
23:00happened.
23:02What I'm trying to do is get it
23:04down to the brawl.
23:08All of the intricate details of
23:10these legs now have this
23:12highlight on it because we sanded
23:14them down.
23:15Chip isn't here but if he was I
23:17wouldn't let him do this because
23:18to me you have to have a light
23:20hand.
23:21You can overdo it and then it
23:24just feels a little too shabby or
23:26something.
23:27So we're going to go try this out.
23:29This is such a tight timeline on
23:31just trying to get everything in
23:32the house.
23:33And so we have so many Magnolia
23:36family members here with us.
23:38I just like this is like a fun
23:39party.
23:40Where do we start?
23:41Everyone's kind of tackling each
23:43room.
23:44We planned it pretty tight to where
23:46everything's like a map.
23:47Basically when everyone got here it
23:49was like this goes in room one this
23:50goes in room two so it's so thought
23:51we're going to take it out.
23:53So they just cleaned out this
23:55portion of Ella's cottage and I'm
23:57wanting to get the bulk of her stuff
23:58in here.
23:59She actually comes tomorrow which
24:01I'm so excited.
24:02I haven't seen her since I dropped
24:03her off at her dorm.
24:05Really trying to get everything
24:07buttoned up in there today and
24:08tomorrow before she gets here so she
24:10can just have full reign in there.
24:12You know this project has been very
24:14personal as a family and an extended
24:16family.
24:17This is where we come.
24:18It's not just about I want it to be
24:19pretty.
24:20How does this tell the story of us
24:22here?
24:23Now as I'm stepping in and it's all
24:25coming together it's like ah it feels
24:27like it's right.
24:33We're about 80% done with the staging
24:35in the main house but we're still
24:37waiting on the kitchen and the living
24:38room.
24:39In the meantime we're focusing on the
24:41cottages.
24:41I like this.
24:43I do too.
24:45Ella really wanted to be here as we
24:47started moving in and so we timed it
24:50to where she could fly here over the
24:52weekend and tackle her little cottage.
24:57She's been in here putting all her
24:59stuff together so I'm going to check
25:01on her.
25:01If you want something here we were
25:04thinking cherries or persimmons.
25:06Persimmons.
25:07Persimmons.
25:08That's a soft one if you want to eat
25:09these are her favorites.
25:11Before I pop this do you like this
25:13Audrey Ficus here?
25:15Yeah maybe a stool.
25:17So put it on a little stool?
25:18Yes because I think I'd kind of like
25:20it to like.
25:21Then let me go find a couple stool
25:22options.
25:23Did we have more candlesticks like
25:26that one because I think that looks a
25:28little bit weird.
25:28By itself?
25:29Yeah.
25:29I will go get you more candles.
25:32Throughout this journey with Ella taking
25:34a back seat letting her lead has been so
25:37fun.
25:38I feel like I'm the design intern.
25:40Ma'am.
25:42Do any of these suits your fancy?
25:45So I got you all of these little things if
25:48you like them.
25:50That's cute.
25:51I think so yeah.
25:52That's really sweet.
25:54You know there's so many things that I love
25:56about this little cottage.
25:57I feel like Ella really saw from day one.
26:00I love the kitchen.
26:02I love how she played with blue and green.
26:06She was not afraid to mix colors.
26:09Do you feel good about the kitchen?
26:11Um yes.
26:13You want to tackle it yourself?
26:14Mm-hmm.
26:16Okay I'm gonna go work on the big cottage.
26:19If you need me I'm right over there.
26:20Have some fun in here babe.
26:22Okay I'm proud of you.
26:23This place is so cute.
26:27The last time I saw Ella is when I dropped
26:28her off at college.
26:29So I'm just a month ago.
26:31So getting to see her and how much she's
26:34grown in just that one month period.
26:37It does something to my heart.
26:39Crew and Chip get here tomorrow.
26:41Crew doesn't know he's about to see his big sister.
26:43So we've kept that from him because he has
26:45missed her so much and she has missed him.
26:47So that's gonna be a fun little reunion.
26:49Especially because he'll be the first to see
26:51Ella's first finished design project.
26:54And then my sister Mikey and her husband David
26:57get here the day after that.
26:58So we've got a really tight timeline
27:00to button everything up.
27:02Oh my I've been waiting for you.
27:13You've got your boots on.
27:15Hey look what I need help with today.
27:16Remember this little cottage.
27:19Do you see that blue tape?
27:20What do you think that says?
27:22What tape?
27:22So what does that mean?
27:24Don't step on it.
27:24Don't step on it.
27:25Hold on hold on before you go in.
27:26Hold on one second.
27:27I need you to peel the glue tape off.
27:30Okay.
27:30Wow.
27:31Okay.
27:32Are you ready to see your little fixer-upper?
27:36Ready?
27:38Okay.
27:38Step over the paint.
27:39Oh my goodness.
27:42Oh my goodness.
27:55Do you love it?
27:56I miss you too buddy.
27:58Do you want to look around?
28:04Look up there.
28:05Isn't it awesome?
28:06This is so cool.
28:10It's so cute.
28:11It's so fun to see Ella and y'all.
28:13We're y'all having fun.
28:15So much fun.
28:16You wait till you see this.
28:17I can't wait.
28:18Do you love the little cottage?
28:20Yes.
28:21Look at our little fireplace.
28:23So cute.
28:25We need to collect some pine cones, okay?
28:27For our little swan.
28:29And look, you need to do some artwork for that, okay?
28:32Some watercolor so that we can put it right here.
28:34Okay.
28:35Okay, do you know what you're going to draw?
28:37Probably a fish.
28:38Probably a fish.
28:39You want to go look in the bathroom?
28:45Do you like the tile?
28:46Mm-hmm.
28:49That's for your laundry.
28:51Or we can put the fish that I can't catch in here.
28:56That's a great idea.
29:00This is like the perfect size for both of them.
29:04Probably my favorite reveal ever.
29:05We are at the last day before the reveal at the main house.
29:14And as only we can do it, you know, it's like there's never a dull moment.
29:17There's so much action going on here in the mountain house.
29:20I don't know if we've had another project where there's like multiple little units.
29:24Yeah.
29:24It feels like a little tiny compound.
29:26We are finishing up the main space, which is the kitchen, dining, and the living room.
29:31We can't control that right now.
29:32But what we can control is the tiny cottage and the big cottage.
29:37Now that the big cottage is done, I really wanted Chip to walk through it.
29:40We repainted the siding a really beautiful green, added new shutters, and then the hand-hewn beams on the porch.
29:46I love that we've been able to refurbish those cool rocking chairs.
29:50I love them.
29:52After you.
29:52Ladies first.
29:55Let me see what you've done to the place.
29:57That's so cute.
29:57What have you done to the place?
30:01As you step into the house, we added the fireplace, which I think is the biggest statement in that room, and then the two new windows.
30:09Golly, babe, the place looks great.
30:13Look at Ella and crew.
30:16Best friends.
30:20I was really thinking about our boys when I designed this cottage.
30:24This just feels like a more masculine-feeling space.
30:30We painted the ceiling and the trim a really pretty green, and then we plastered all of the walls in the main space, which is really, like, moody and earthy, and then added a few feminine touches.
30:43We added some gingham fabric to the window seat.
30:47I love that that was existing, so I wanted to really highlight that.
30:50Something about it is super charming, you know?
30:52The Dutch door that was in the existing kitchen in the main house is now here, and I feel like it feels just perfect in that spot.
30:59And we just galley-kitchened this by adding all new cabinets, because theirs were shot.
31:07Added this cute little scallop bin hood, which I love scallop.
31:10Love it.
31:10And then this really pretty tile for the backsplash.
31:14Use the existing butcher block countertops.
31:16Chip, remember the lights?
31:18Oh, of course.
31:18Steve said those are going to take another month or two.
31:20We had these for Ella's cottage, and her ceilings were too low.
31:24So these are placeholders?
31:25Yes.
31:26Good.
31:27And then into the bathroom.
31:31We kept the tub, sink, toilet all in place.
31:34Kept the existing vanity, added new countertops.
31:37And then we did a really pretty black and white tile on the wall, and then added new light fixtures and hardware.
31:43I just think this turned out great.
31:45This was simple.
31:48And last but not least, the bedroom.
31:50I love this room.
31:51Love this plaid wallpaper.
31:53Yeah.
31:53I feel like we just matched the green to the wallpaper.
31:57Even adding those pretty sconces just elevated a little bit.
32:00Gorgeous, babe.
32:01Again, that mix of masculine, but then with these little floral chairs, so it didn't feel so boyish.
32:07It was like a mix of both.
32:09Well, you did it.
32:10You just gave me the fastest tour in Fixer Upper history.
32:14Well done, Steve.
32:14Guess what?
32:15I think I have about 10 minutes left, and we can move in.
32:18He keeps telling me 10 minutes.
32:20Any minute.
32:20Got to finish those beams in that kitchen.
32:22We can move into the kitchen, and we're finally done.
32:24And then-
32:25The big house.
32:25Revealed tomorrow.
32:26Let's go.
32:26Okay.
32:27Well done, babe.
32:28I'm proud of you.
32:29Thank you, Chip.
32:30Now all of our efforts can go into the main house.
32:34Mikey and David, my sister and brother-in-law, are flying in.
32:37We wanted to reveal this to them.
32:39They're going to be one of the first families that come to visit, so we thought it'd be fun
32:42to kind of show them the lay of the land.
32:44But, I mean, we're crossing our fingers we get in before dark because there's still a lot
32:48of work to happen in there.
32:49Wow, y'all.
32:53Joe has this innate ability to take something across the finish line that appears impossible.
32:59I think a part of me really feeds off that energy.
33:03And then it's game time.
33:05Tomorrow's the reveal.
33:06Oh, babe, your sister's here.
33:18All right.
33:20Today is the day.
33:22The project is finally complete.
33:23And to top that off, my sister Mikey and David are going to be our first guests.
33:29Welcome, y'all.
33:30So we're going to get to show them the property, show them the house.
33:33We can't wait.
33:34Okie dokie.
33:36Goodness, look at the landscape.
33:38For sure.
33:38You step in here and it just feels like this magical little fairy world.
33:42Mikey, look at this house.
33:44Holy moly.
33:46So pretty.
33:47Let's let them look at this house.
33:49Me and David are going to go look at the river.
33:51You two are on your own.
33:53So just me and Mikey?
33:53Yeah, you two are on your own.
33:55Have fun.
33:56Oh, my.
33:56David and I will meet you back in maybe an hour or so.
33:58Grab crew.
33:59He's on the back porch waiting for you.
34:01You got it.
34:01Okie, so Mikey, let's go look at the house.
34:03Okie, bye.
34:04Have fun.
34:04David, you're going to love that river.
34:06I can't wait.
34:08So out here, we painted the exterior green.
34:10We added a new front door, wood shutters, and then we cleaned up all of the landscape and added some new plants.
34:17We're going first.
34:19Okie.
34:20Oh, my goodness, Jo.
34:21Isn't it so pretty?
34:22The wood.
34:24The floors were original.
34:26We added all this really beautiful antique oak.
34:30But I just love this idea of this, like, place to put your stuff.
34:34It felt like a nice welcome.
34:35Yeah.
34:35And then stepping into here, the fire.
34:38Oh, my goodness, Jo.
34:40The fire.
34:40Oh.
34:41Don't look okay.
34:43Okie, sorry.
34:43I just...
34:44That red fireplace is original.
34:48These beams were existing, but so dark that when we added all the wood to the ceilings,
34:53we had this amazing painter come in and paint every one of these beams.
34:57It's crazy.
34:59Is this plaster?
34:59This is plaster.
35:01These are fun.
35:01These are vintage, and I just recovered them with the gingham.
35:04This is probably one of my favorite little settings.
35:07Okie, we'll go here first.
35:09We opened this up to really define this space.
35:13This is the living room.
35:16This fireplace we added, and I love this red rock because it ties back to that.
35:24They had two small windows.
35:27So we opened that up to bring in more natural light.
35:30So it feels like you're in the treehouse.
35:32Like a small aspens.
35:33I know.
35:35Imagine playing cards here, having coffee.
35:39Okie, to the kitchen.
35:43This used to be their living room.
35:44Oh, Jo.
35:46This is amazing.
35:48We added green tile.
35:50Oh, wow.
35:51Custom cabinetry.
35:54This beautiful vent hood.
35:57There's nothing she can't do.
35:58Stop it.
35:59Seriously.
36:00Imagine all of us at this table.
36:02Wow.
36:02And it's so pretty.
36:05The table's like the best thing.
36:07And then here, you see this really pretty black countertop, more of that green tile,
36:13and then these really pretty cabinets.
36:16I want it to feel like lodge and cottage.
36:20The strong green tile, all of the wood.
36:23But then you have these like dainty little chairs.
36:26So it's like masculine, but then also charming and sweet.
36:29Yes.
36:30That's the style.
36:31Oh, I love this style.
36:33I want to show you what was the kitchen.
36:35Okay.
36:35You won't believe how little it was.
36:37So this walked into the kitchen.
36:39It was cottagey.
36:40It was really sweet.
36:41But I thought for this amount of space, a cozy reading room would be perfect.
36:45This was the original range.
36:49So we just put this little stove here, added shelving.
36:53We created this little nook right here.
36:57These beautiful floors are antique.
37:00We added paneling on the walls, a darker color, but then vertical and horizontal.
37:04So it just felt super interesting.
37:07And then here, we created a cased opening to make this feel a little more defined.
37:13This is a tiny powder bath.
37:15Oh, look at the tile.
37:16It's so cute.
37:17Fun little sink.
37:18Yeah.
37:19So pretty.
37:20Okay.
37:20Now we're walking into the primary.
37:23That is beautiful.
37:25This is another space where it's like, oh, if you could imagine it before.
37:29This was all walled off.
37:30There's no bathroom.
37:31There's no closet.
37:32So we opened that up, added wallpaper and a sweet scalloped trim.
37:37We added the light oak onto the ceiling.
37:40And then again, we faux painted these beams to match.
37:43That balcony was already there.
37:45These windows were there.
37:47I think the biggest thing here is I didn't want to do a door to the bathroom
37:50because I wanted this space to feel larger.
37:53And now you walk into the primary bath.
37:56And then again, there were no closets.
37:57So adding all of this closet space, water closet, shower, a tub by the windows,
38:04added the double vanity, all this beautiful wood.
38:06All the wood and all the detail looks original.
38:10That was the goal.
38:12Okay.
38:12So now I want to take you downstairs.
38:16Hey, Mikey.
38:17I love this gorgeous wood.
38:19Feel the flow.
38:21Just kind of Swiss chalet inspiration.
38:24And then here, I want to show you another guest bedroom.
38:28So we just plastered the walls, painted this trim green, added new sconces here.
38:36There was no bathroom connected.
38:38And now we created a really pretty bathroom with a double vanity in that same light oak,
38:46black countertops, these pretty mirrors, and a picture frame tile in the shower.
38:51That's amazing.
38:53Yeah.
38:55And then let's walk out into this hallway.
38:58Just cut into the stairs and created this little nook moment so it felt bigger.
39:04And then stepping in here, so this was their primary suite.
39:07Okay.
39:07But I turned it into living space.
39:09Wow.
39:12I can imagine all the kids.
39:15So this is kind of the game room, hot cocoa, coffee bar.
39:18I love this hand painted tile.
39:24If you look in here, this is the laundry room.
39:28This was actually their bathroom.
39:30But I felt like we needed a larger space for all of our winter clothes and boots.
39:35Added all of the paneling on the walls, washer dryer, the sink.
39:39And then that vintage ski wallpaper.
39:41Cute.
39:43And then stepping into here, this was the primary bedroom, but now this is the den.
39:48Pretty.
39:50I love that every room almost has a fireplace.
39:52Isn't that amazing?
39:53That's amazing.
39:54You know Chip loves wood-burning fireplaces, so we added that new fireplace, the French doors.
40:00I love this little nook right here with new fabric.
40:03I'd be happy just to sleep here.
40:05I know.
40:05I feel like this is like a cute moment to read a book.
40:09This is where we're all going to probably hang out.
40:11Wow.
40:12One thing I'm probably the most excited about, this was their closet.
40:21And now this is the bunk room.
40:24So four beds, these beams were there.
40:26I added some tongue and groove, added the pretty wallpaper, all the little sconces.
40:31This room was inspired by our girls.
40:33This is the space that they're going to be in.
40:35It's really sweet, all the stories.
40:37And then the bathroom for this space, but also for the guests out here, is right here.
40:42Okay.
40:43So we turned this part of the closet into a bathroom that ties into the design of the bunk room.
40:47But look at that plaid tile.
40:51And I love the mirror and these sweet little sconces.
40:55All the wallpaper and tile is still so special.
40:57I do feel like they all have a little story, yes.
41:05Okay, last but not least, I want to show you the deck.
41:10Oh my goodness.
41:11I purposely did lounge chairs because I just think it's so good to lay here and listen
41:15to the river.
41:17Look, Chip looks like a natural.
41:20Let's go down there.
41:21When the weather's nice, we can hang here.
41:25You see it, look.
41:26Let's see if it gets attacked.
41:31Hey Chip, look who I found.
41:32Oh, finally.
41:35Crew sees a trout.
41:36Oh man, it's going to be hard to get him home.
41:38How was the tour?
41:39Oh, amazing.
41:41Yeah, what'd you think?
41:41Beautiful once again.
41:42What was your favorite spot?
41:43See, Joe.
41:44I love walking into that fireplace and then you can see the kitchen and
41:48it's like a 360 of awesomeness.
41:50Awesome.
41:51360 of awesomeness.
41:53All right.
41:54I can live with that.
41:55With all the glass and looking out.
41:56Yeah, that view.
41:57It's so pretty.
41:59You can just feel the love and the effort that you guys put into this thing.
42:03So it just looks like a million bucks.
42:04This has been such a unique journey.
42:07Now that we're at the finish line, we can finally enjoy it.
42:10This feels like a home for us and even the fact that we didn't get to be here every day like we're
42:15used to doing in Waco on those projects.
42:17It was truly the next best thing to have for you.
42:19He was probably thankful that you weren't here every day.
42:21I'm sure he was.
42:22But see, for real, like genuinely we're so grateful.
42:24Well done, man.
42:25It feels so special.
42:26The last 10 years we've spent time here in Colorado as a family.
42:30So it just feels like a full circle moment.
42:32Seeing the future, but also just sitting in it now presently.
42:36It feels like such a gift and I can't wait for all that's to come.
42:38Steve, congratulations, man.
42:40Well done.
42:41Well done.
42:41Proud of you.
