00:00one of my bad purchases in life but we're gonna see i bought a kind of a lake house cabin
00:08i bought this cabin near table rock lake about two hours outside of bentonville
00:13that was really ravaged by the tornadoes that we had and it needs a lot of work it had another
00:22section of a house hooked to it that was ripped off and so yeah we're gonna see if we can get
00:29this thing cleaned up all right jenny three two one go perfect for me and dave every day is a lot of
00:49moving parts with five growing kids no do not go in the house all right we break up whoa whoa
01:00a working farm full of our beloved animals sometimes cows don't do what you want them
01:04to it's the strangest thing i think i have to go in and scoop some poop too a renovation business
01:14and running two stores in our community of northwest arkansas i think we did it we definitely did it
01:20we stay pretty busy and sometimes a little stressed god oh my lord david but when your job is helping
01:29your neighbors transform their lives oh my god by transforming the place they call home
01:35a crush oh my god it's so pretty oh it's not really work at all just another day in this crazy beautiful

01:57i can't believe you've already cleared out all the fallen trees
02:04yeah this house she's a beaut huh she's a classic here's the story with this one after the tornado
02:11came through here there used to be a mobile home where my truck is uh-huh it got rolled out of the
02:17way yeah and then the house was left standing amazingly so after the storm we literally had
02:24well trees everywhere uh-huh so the previous owner came he actually sold this to us for wait for it
02:32five thousand dollars really yeah that's a deal two lots
02:36a septic system that's fine a well power and this view and the view of the lake
02:48how come no one has mentioned dave's outfit like why are we ignoring well i'm pretty sure
02:54you bought that along with this without your approval thing so i figured i was going to be up in
02:59the attic figure you know what why not dress for the part i can always take it off but there's nothing
03:04on under so you'd have to live with me this house we bought as is so we need to do everything
03:11but the good news is it's small are you just going to use it for no bob and jill our neighbors
03:20our neighbors bob and jill they are the best neighbors anyone could ever ask for i mean jenny
03:25has called him at two in the morning bob i hear something dave's out of town can you come check it out
03:29and he's up right away they've been looking for a lake house now well ever since we've been their
03:36neighbors so it's kind of been you know just this dream that you know if if we could ever find
03:41something for bob and jill great but it's never come to fruition until now when him and jill got
03:47married she moved into his place which was always kind of his place and so now he has kind of told jenny
03:53and i hey i want you to make this beautiful and adorable for jill but he won't let her come see it
03:58it's a surprise it's a surprise it's that's which is probably pretty smart bob and jill they have gone
04:04to south africa for the next three months they're both retired so they go every year and stay with
04:11friends so he'll check in on the progress when he gets back to make sure it's on track and perfect for
04:17him and jill so he's given us 120 grand and full reign on all design decisions yeah oh that's a
04:25good to remake this which again i don't have to do a well i don't have to do a septic system i just
04:31got to rehab the house but it's so small one bedroom one bathroom you know and then kitchen okay but we
04:37have to do a new roof we obviously have to do siding we need windows we need a door we need a front
04:41porch we need a fireplace we need a kitchen we need a bathroom you need a lot house house a whole house
04:47for 120 and bob is really concerned about the budget i mean it seems like a lot of money but
04:52there's a lot it's a small space but there's so much that has everything has to be done i mean is
04:58this an issue all this rot is that a problem yeah but i mean it's not part of this i mean this has all
05:04got to come off look at that oh my gosh that's the reason that's the reason these aren't even tiny
05:12hands they're little cat paws found these the other day i thought they were perfect for this
05:18house like there could be something living underneath
05:22kind of looks like you're flipping me off i'm just gonna be honest
05:26most people would probably just tear it down and say they got the lot for five grand but
05:31we're not we're not most people now it's just in need of a little tlc
05:35to bring it back i would say a lot of tlc not a little a lot of tlc what do you expect there's five
05:41grand bob is trusting us to make this a cabin jill will love so we're going to give it a cozy
05:47cottage feel but keep the maintenance minimal we're going to add a covered porch space in the
05:51lake with composite decking and then install a durable siding that resembles cedar shakes we'll
05:57add a stone chimney to give the cabin a rustic feel and we're going to need a ton of landscaping
06:02to fill in the property damaged by the tornado let's go inside there's not a lot to demo because
06:08there was never a kitchen in here there was never a functioning bathroom in here because that was in
06:13the trailer that was in the trailer they used wood flooring like for the walls so we're going to just
06:21get rid of that we're going to basically open up as much as we can of this this is where we're going
06:26to do kitchen yes here living where we came in out to the front door and then this will be
06:32a bathroom bathroom and then the bedroom up front it is pretty small and compact like a cozy cool
06:38cabin with this cabin we have limited space and a lot of needs we need a bedroom a bathroom a kitchen
06:46slash dining room and a living room we know we want a fireplace and i have some ideas for cabinets
06:51flooring and tile that i think jill will love she will like just really rustic and cozy and that's
06:58what she does like chairs with like cow horns yes she does because it's not like we have to go like
07:02white and doilies it's just going to be like a cozy cool cabin which i think is going to be awesome
07:07so is the ceiling going to stay we're thinking here we want to just vault the whole space or just this
07:13the living that's a question because i want to see what is up in the attic because that's something
07:16i'm wondering is what's going to happen with the roof line and then where can we vault i'm going up in
07:21the attic all right go like swallowed some dust that's a nice access ladder who may have hit the
07:30lottery this is a ton of space up here we could do like a little loft up here babe this is nice all
07:36right so it's kind of cute let us see yeah just sit down it's almost like he just sat up here and
07:43thought about life i guess so what do we want to do can we make this into something this is a nice
07:49actually what if we did a little reading note and if we're already redoing the roof should we just
07:53make the pitch a little higher and then add the door but redoing the shingles on the roof and
07:58redoing the roof are two different things like this is osb that's in good shape i know but we want
08:03to surprise jill just think about jill isn't he so cute i have it all pictured in my head like it's
08:07just there's a window there's built-in bookcases a little sitting area for her she comes up here and reads
08:14yeah but i don't have room for a staircase it'd have to be a ladder it'd have to be a ladder yeah
08:21a staircase would kill all your space really what if we do just like a library ladder and maybe we
08:28do some bookcases oh my gosh what is happening is that tim let's go down and work he's working
08:34i think it's something to think about i think we need to wait until we get into the roof though
08:38and just see well this is really cool though up here i feel like we're it's like square footage
08:43that we just found that we need to utilize we just have to access it somehow i don't really
08:48want jill having to climb up and down a ladder um but it is a really great space so i gotta just
08:53do some thinking so if today if we can just open up as much as we can of this that should be the
08:59goal wait kim you're getting after it in here
09:03well that wall done where's dave he's outside
09:14so do we think there is any way to create something upstairs or do i just give it up i just don't know
09:19that you can do it with the staircase well i know you're gonna have to do a ladder okay what about
09:24right here oh gosh careful where did that come from i don't know what about this hallway the problem
09:30with stairs inside let's say okay so to go up eight feet you need 13 feet to abide by the same codes that
09:38standard staircases do and that's half of the living room and kitchen right but that's not just down here
09:44you got to have this all open too yeah so then you take out your entire upstairs getting upstairs
09:51hmm i know you're humming like you want me to come up with another solution i'm just telling you
09:57that like that what it is yeah i was just thinking i mean for example hear me out there's already not a
10:04wall here so why don't we just push this wall back five feet and put the staircase there and because
10:11there's not footings there's not block work there's not oh it like it every time you do that it
10:18takes everything and then then we're not at 900 square foot we're at 1100 square foot well then why
10:23not just go to 15. well because i don't want to i don't know you're just a naysayer
10:33this house is a challenge because of the size and we really need to use every square foot of space
10:38the attic feels like an opportunity to take advantage of that space what if what if the
10:43stairs could enter the laundry the bathroom to where you're not ruining this area we don't see
10:48the bathroom but you couldn't bob's taking a dump and jill's like i'm gonna run upstairs and read have
10:53fun honey if we can figure out a way to get up there we'll be worth it if we can't it's not the end of
10:59the world it's okay but i want to try we'll figure it out we are two weeks in on renovating this cabin
11:13for our neighbors bob and jill we have got all the framing wrapped up on the house putting on the roof
11:19right now we did increase the pitch of the roof to make more space in the attic it only cost about
11:258 000 more to do and jenny is very happy about the added space i got plumbers done i got electricians
11:32here all of these things go much faster when you're dealing with an 800 square foot home
11:37really the big win of this whole thing of redoing this roof is now i've got plenty of head height so
11:45we'll have a nice loft here still got to figure out the stairs we got decking going on up front
11:50we're getting drywall put up i'm installing windows and we are pretty much at the white box stage
11:58to get to this point took four weeks which i feel great about
12:05we've sent measurements to our cabinet maker chris and i think we're ready to get jenny in
12:09here and start making this a cabin that bob and jill will love
12:20chris latham what's up what's going on you got your hot shot cabinets austin's with me i brought
12:25austin too all right while you guys do that i'm going to grab my paint samples and do something
12:30okay meaningful things are really moving fast cabinets are here so this is great we are installing
12:37we got white oak in the bathroom and then i've got to get a color for the kitchen cabinets we've
12:42been over to their home so many times and i know jill's style so i'm thinking sort of a buttery yellow
12:49that feels really cheerful and happy and sweet can you hold that up for me and you see it like
12:57my stand is fine no it's pretty i like it so it's this the main color is this okay the cabinets
13:03kind of a buttery yellow i tried different yellow yellow is hard what do you think looks
13:08just like the cabinet i'd go with more of a mustard color okay which one do you like
13:14when you say yellow i don't see yellow i don't either i see brown yellow i'm colorblind don't ask
13:19me oh my gosh forget it it's called biscuit a dark cream sounds good for a kitchen she's she's
13:26hoping it says yellowish i know that i want a cheerful happy kitchen i feel like bob and jill
13:34they're going to love it all right so countertop i'm going to go pick a slab by this window also
13:40chris is going to be the sink and i want you to do it like you did the store downtown where you built
13:44it out of the slab but it's going to have to angle because it has to function yeah it has to drain okay
13:50gonna have some time to work on this i mean a week two weeks so at our new store mars on maine
13:58i found a marble slab that i had chris fabricate into a sink for bob and jill it's perfect so the
14:04next thing i want to talk about is the fireplace i'm gonna get stone i do think we should do like a
14:10like a stove in here but make it a pellet stove so it's easy you know like the one you gave me for
14:14my birthday in my office it's so nice and easy and you just push a button okay i feel like jill would
14:20fully appreciate that also have tile samples ordered for the bathroom so i'll bring those
14:25what do we do on the floor this week well i have those ordered as well i'm thinking we do wood in here
14:29but then out here i want to do a slate floor so you want to do wood in a bathroom and tile in a living
14:35room yeah you know how cold slate floors are i know i was thinking it would be a heated floor
14:39don't worry i thought all this through i'm i'm getting samples we'll talk about it later
14:42bob said to do what we want as long as we stay on budget
14:54we're six weeks into this renovation and bob and jill won't be back for another six weeks
14:59i like how you backed up where we could just set it right on the deck here
15:02that's how i do it matt mars that's how i do it yeah that's nice okay let's bring them all in first
15:06and then i'll get i'll get up on the ladder we've got the bookshelves for the loft we still don't know
15:12how we're getting up to the loft but we have bookshelves i think actually jacob's coming later
15:16today too to talk about landscaping so all the things are happening it's good stuff this one
15:21looks like a little dollhouse it's so cute look this reading nook is going to be perfect for joe

15:38welcome to the cabin but thank you for coming to meet me because i feel like we have no landscaping
15:43this is literally um starting from scratch because dave cleared all this so it needs some love so we're
15:49building this for our neighbors bob and jill who are retired so we want it to be as low maintenance
15:54as possible we can do some flagstone leading up to the porch and a wraparound bed with easy to maintain
15:59plants just that alone will give it that cozy cottage feel like this has been here a while and
16:05there's established mature landscaping which i know is hard to do the other thing we need to do is
16:10create a flagstone patio i think we need some sort of fire pit with seating surrounded by trees for
16:14privacy and we also ordered a wood-fired hot tub so we'll need room for that as well
16:22so if we end it here you know blend it in with another you know pathway or you know surround the
16:27tub whatever we use in the front just kind of tie it all together okay perfect thank you so much
16:32thanks for meeting me all the way out here with so many of the big decisions done we still need to
16:37figure out stairs i know bob and jill are not going to want to climb up and down a ladder they're just
16:42not we need something that folds away that can be used when they need it if they needed to fold it
16:47away they can i found a company that actually builds fold away staircases that look like they're
16:53sturdy and so we're not the only ones that have had this problem there's a whole company that has been
16:58funny there's been people that have thought about this before me and so i ordered one of these kits
17:04so we're going to try it in my barn first to make sure we know how to install it so we won't damage
17:08the walls or floors at the cabin oh that's pretty cool oh what's going what what am i seeing right now
17:20do you like my new slippers it's a bracelet aren't they so cute okay so this is though it's got to be
17:27up like this like a lot of space between steps hey let me grab a two by four all right let's try this
17:34right there that looks a lot better you want to try it no i don't well you got to try it you got to try
17:41it i don't know how to do anything be careful please this does not look sturdy come try it it's sturdy
17:50enough looks like you printed it from a 3d printer feet are really hot in these slippers
18:11we got some news that has totally changed the nature of this project
18:15okay yeah
18:20so we recently got some news about bob who's been in south africa with jill while
18:27we've been working on their cabin
18:31jill called jenny and bob had a heart attack and passed away
18:35yeah
18:40jill flew home when she was finally able to come home with bob's ashes and um
18:46um we had to you know tell our kids of course and it was hard um really hard lots of tears in our house
18:56yeah
19:01anytime we needed anything he was there he was more than a neighbor he was family
19:07jill didn't know about the cabin at all and so we told jill you know hey bob wanted to do this with
19:15cabin um jill's by herself now and so jill at this time does not want to go out in the middle of the
19:23woods into a cabin by herself
19:25you know if we're gonna be using this just as a little getaway for our family now i feel like we
19:33need we're not gonna fit more space yeah so i was thinking what if we did a tent out here like a tent
19:39area for the kids and it's kind of like a nod to africa for you know like what bob loved and
19:46like going on safari like i was thinking like oh dang it it's okay it's all right we went ahead and
19:54gave jill all the money back that bob had paid so far so now we're gonna make this a cabin for our
19:59family but in his honor i mean there's no way we could sell it so keeping it and gonna make it a place
20:08where we still make happy memories like we planned so what's up man what up dave and austin are working
20:30on the folding staircase to the loft of the cabin okay you ready yeah i'm good i'm excited to see it
20:36go in still don't really understand somewhere if it's gonna work so we'll see i don't know
20:43what do you mean if it's gonna work why don't you say when it's going to work i know i could use some
20:47positivity right now okay i think it's gonna once it's painted it'll help i think so it's about right
20:53there go back a little bit like whoa too much a little bit more yeah let's put just one screw in
21:00the bottom where it holds it did you bring your screw in it's in the truck okay go grab it and then
21:05we'll set it down and then we can lift it up for flooring too help me understand why you didn't
21:10just build a staircase that's just exactly this size like a real one because if it is a fixed staircase
21:17it is illegal illegal though like illegal like you're going to jail illegal don't get mad at me
21:26let's try it all right yeah but it's it's like you're not gonna put a panel on this no we're gonna
21:36have to adjust it more and now it's crooked we ain't coming down all the way because for some
21:42reason look how it angles this it angles in why is it doing that let me think about this for a second
21:50so you got this membrane floor which is going to be cool and heated then you have thin set then the tile
22:00so you probably add another quarter so if we take three and a quarter
22:04off of up there it should lay flat we could lower the platform get a saw cut three and a half inches and
22:13just drop the platform cool sounds like plane
22:32you ready to run the gauntlet of the stairs i don't know what that means
22:36did i screw something that i wasn't supposed to i don't think so i don't know i don't want to
22:47is it not giving enough it's not hitting anything

24:00how are you and dave i don't know dave's in a mood because he worked really hard on the stairs
24:04but that's not even true but he did buy them so it's not like he built the whole thing and he's
24:09stuck with what he bought so he can't really be that mad did you hear me so i mean if he would
24:16have built him he wouldn't have made that handrail so it's fine everything's fine he just gets really

24:29we have a lot going on at the cabin today uh we're bringing tile to the house uh the tile guys have
24:34done a lot of prep work we have the heated floor membrane down we're making great progress
24:39i'm going to meet jay to go through some stone samples for the fireplace so we're going to have
24:46a stone fireplace outside and inside and just need to pick some pick some stone hey jay well hello miss
24:54jay how are you doing great yourself good to see you i'm good thanks thanks for meeting me yes ma'am
24:58all right i got some samples of the rock that you might want to choose perfect oh gosh these are
25:04legit stones they're very handy yes ma'am um i want it to look like just natural they are oh that's
25:11pretty i just think we're gonna have to be careful with the red ones take those these red ones out but
25:17keep it really natural then yeah this is the one okay yes perfect in addition to the stone for the
25:24chimney and fireplace we're also doing flagstone for the patio and jenny is picking a slab of marble
25:31for the kitchen countertops and the custom sink i want something that like stands out when you
25:36walk in like that's gorgeous i love marble marble's so gorgeous and of course it's a natural stone
25:42there's not really a science to it it's just what's pretty i need pricing on this it's so pretty
25:48i'll let chris know to expect it okay okay to see you take care bye now that we have all the stone
25:55we're moving forward on the exterior chimney the heated floor is installed which means tile and
26:00hardwood flooring can go in the handmade checkerboard tile in the bathroom is amazing it pairs beautifully
26:07with the overall color palette i have planned for the kitchen
26:09hey hey the table looks pretty one thing we're really going to need for the cabin is a big dining
26:23table that will fit our family i think this is going to be beautiful it's elmwood it's going to be
26:27different it has a lot of warmth to the wood dave had the idea to have one big leg on each end that
26:33would have sort of an hourglass shape and then a beam would connect them under the tabletop
26:39so i glued these up yesterday so basically we'll have an end that sits 30 inches up or so about like
26:47this and then we'll cut a pattern in it okay this is what i drew that then i could recreate on both sides
27:01something like this
27:01it's fancy i'd do the top this and the foot looks like you don't think that looks like a boob
27:13and it has a nipple you don't see the nipple
27:18okay can we try again okay so i haven't cut anything yet so that's why i wanted you to verify this
27:22this let me see let me see see that's better i actually really like this one because it feels
27:30organic and just wavy i like it done
27:40it's much better
27:40okay you ready cute yeah i'll take and i'll run a couple just a little flat stock pieces here
27:59and then i'll have a thicker beam that goes side to side that holds everything square it's cute bravo
28:04at the cabin we're getting the railings installed for the collapsible staircase there you go and i'm
28:12feeling great about the whole thing but i think jenny is still on the fence jay's doing amazing work
28:20on the fireplace and just in time because the ball of stove has arrived what is this like touch screen
28:26this is even it's touch screen controls you gotta wire your probe oh dave this one's fancy yeah it has
28:32that wood stove look that i want for this cottage with the stone surround it's going to be really
28:38cute and cozy so cute are you excited to see it yeah the coolest thing would be if there was a hot tub
28:48that would be cool here it is
28:51inside the cabin we're moving right along paint should be done today outside we've got the composite
29:05shake siding going up jay is continuing stonework and we're installing a solar panel system
29:13you know with the tornadoes and storms we've had it's to the point we're having a solar backup is just the
29:18right move it's been a day but we are down to the last one i've got tim here helping me we're actually
29:26going to do battery backup as well so really from the sun we get well other than today when it's cloudy
29:32we don't have to be off-grid but we pretty much have the power to be off-grid
29:36all right all right i got it here with all of the panels set now we need to install the battery
29:47backup wait wait wait oh there we go are we on yeah we're on on my side
29:54it's off i don't want to let it go there we go now it's in fitting the grooves
29:58that's it man it even matches the trim it actually does
30:09the cabin is getting really close a lot of the finishing touches are getting added both outside
30:15and inside along with the custom marble sink which exceeded my expectations
30:21everything looks amazing and we're almost ready to start bringing furniture in
30:36oh there you go nice let's see it is it too high oh so close that was so close all right take your
30:42time yes i'm ready hey i got a footboard got a headboard
30:52dave is welding up a bed for the cabin's one bedroom it's gonna have a simple iron base and
30:57a low profile headboard with two posts and an arched piece of metal to connect the two
31:03so i just need to know how much you want me to bend it you want to hold that other edge
31:09there's a glove right there because i'm going to take and cut this but then i've got to you i
31:14got to clamp it in there to get it to stay babe you know what i'm going to get you for father's day
31:20new gloves oh i would love that so so go down as far as you want to go down and you just let it sit
31:24there and then i'll bend this and you tell me where a little less a little less yeah like that
31:31about that okay hold on with my finger here got it okay all right
31:47oh it looks so good i like it it's perfect
32:01we have a hot tub this is a wood burning hot tub correct yeah okay uh so no power other than the
32:14wood i love this so much
32:21so we're really creating almost a whole nother home outside from the fire pit area to the tent
32:28to the tub to just really being able to enjoy this beautiful property i've got sherems here
32:33working on all of the landscaping what's happening here this is the rest of the walkway yeah yeah so
32:38this will connect it to the driveway and i'm going to just stop the driveway right here at the back of
32:42the house so we have this amazing concrete fire pit that is going to be really gorgeous out here it's
32:50really modern which is really contrasting everything else we're doing it doesn't have to all look so
32:55rustic i feel like the unexpected is always really helpful within a space so you have just
33:01an extra layer that i think is going to make the whole space feel complete and a place that you
33:05want to hang out perfect okay all right i love it so we also brought a bunch of furniture
33:12from our house since we're keeping the cabin it made sense to just use things we already have
33:16oh careful sorry okay oh thank you thank you all right well i want to test these out i don't know
33:25which rug jen you like the table yeah it looks so good i just have to go find chairs now
33:32we've had grandma mars's dishes for i don't know 20 years they're so fun they're very 1970s
33:40and so we're going to use these dishes here they match the color of the cabinets perfectly
33:44and it makes me very happy because they're grandmas so we brought those that's kind of fun
33:49and i have this chip and dip platter that nate made me at school that doesn't get used often enough
33:54and it's going to be here and it's adorable and i love it we also brought a day bed to help make
33:58the reading nook more comfortable hey jen you want the bed on this side right do we have a mattress
34:04for that no yeah i want it on this side yeah sorry i don't feel like it's a scary now because
34:10the railings are up here this is perfect the finishing touches on the landscaping are happening
34:16now and the crown jewel has arrived our giant outdoor tent okay this thing is humongous isn't it
34:23it's giant so with the tent and added patio space for our family it added about ten thousand dollars to
34:30the budget okay this is so fun the kids are gonna love this it is really cool we put up a tent so that an
34:38amazing tent not just any tent like a circus tent that the kids can stay in so now we have room for
34:42everybody and it's just gonna be a really special place for our family and then we're gonna make
34:47memories here and do what mr bob loved to do which is camp and fish and just be outside this whole
34:54journey has been sad but we feel like we're at a place where we can feel a little excitement
34:58all right babe i got him oh let's see here i do it straight yeah the color looks good with the stone
35:12most announce i don't really like but i like that one he does remind me of mr you text jill yeah she
35:17said she loves it she said he looks good so bob loved everything africa going over to africa spending
35:23time there and he had a warthog in his house from africa we talked to jill and said we'd love to
35:31have something of bob's in the house and the warthog just spoke to both of us i feel like bob would
35:37appreciate that we chose that one because he's kind of smiling like he's kind of smirking just an ugly
35:43little fella kind of like mr bob you know i mean he would laugh at that he would laugh at that because
35:49it's just i i know that's why he had this bound because it just made him smile and that's what he

38:22to mr bob and miss jill decided she didn't want to come out here by herself so we decided we
38:28couldn't ever sell it because it reminds us so much of miss our mr bob huh so we put this little
38:34sign right when you walk in the door mr bob's cabin so cute

41:18our neighbor bob he was he was family to us i mean yeah mr bob his loss was not just felt by jenny and
41:25i was like it's been really tough on our kids to see them out here and enjoying a place that we know
41:31he would have loved pretty cool and jill as well she knows how much we love her and how much we love
41:36mr bob and that um this place is in honor of him and a memory of him and i i think she'll whenever
41:43yeah i think she'll enjoy it eventually too
