Melbournians brave the Christmas chaos for fresh market produce

The Christmas countdown is on and Melbournians have begun flocking to the markets in anticipation for Christmas lunch. But not everyone will be gathering around the family table for Christmas this year.

00:00Two sleeps before Christmas and these last-minute shoppers are checking off their lists.

00:09I think tomorrow would be worse, but yeah, just trying to get in and out as fast as we can.

00:14You've got to battle the crowd if you want the good stuff.

00:16So it is busy, it's fun, it's hectic and, like all good markets, a touch of chaos as well.

00:22But customers aren't the only ones feeling the pressure.

00:25Full on. People are coming in early, buying early, putting stuff in the fridge, being organised this year.

00:31A whopping 16,000 kilograms of prawns are expected to fly off the shelf,

00:35along with 20,000 kilograms of ham, 100,000 oysters and this year's surprise contender for lunch.

00:41Turkey is making a comeback, whole birds, believe it or not.

00:44While at the fruit markets, one berry remains king.

00:49Never failing to attract admiring crowds the Maya Christmas windows.

00:55Families flocked into Melbourne's CBD and happily stood in line.

01:03But for some families, Christmas will look a little different this year.

01:08Here at St Anthony's Parish in Glen Huntley, preparations are underway for the annual Christmas dinner

01:13for people with nowhere else to go.

01:15From humble beginnings 30 years ago, the guest list is now about 500.

01:20After a few years, people used to say, I would like to sit at my Christmas table,

01:24my Christmas family's table, which I thought was just beautiful.

01:28And for volunteers, only one thing is on their wish list this Christmas.

01:32I'd like people to be kind.

01:34You know, I think kindness is, it's so easy to give.

01:39A season for giving to those who need it most.
