The Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor makes an urgent statement about the change in the UK terrorism threat level.
Transcript
00:00Today the Home Secretary has confirmed that the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has raised
00:06the terrorism threat level in the UK from substantial to severe.
00:12This means it is now highly likely that a terrorist attack could happen in the UK.
00:20As we've seen, the UK has been experiencing a gradual increase in terrorist threats for
00:25some time, driven by a rise in both Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorism.
00:32Our casework is increasing across a number of ideologies, and within that we are seeing
00:38an elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions in the UK.
00:46We're also working against an unpredictable global situation that has consequences closer
00:52to home, including physical threats by state-linked actors.
00:58Following yesterday's horrific terrorist attack and incidents targeting the Jewish community
01:03across the country, there is already an enhanced police response in place, and all police forces
01:09will be reviewing this in light of the change in the threat level.
01:14The decision to raise the UK's terrorism threat level to severe is not solely a result of the
01:20Golders Green attack, according to the Home Office, adding that the level in the UK has been rising
01:27for some time, driven by an increase in broader Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threats
01:32from individuals and small groups based in the UK.
01:38In some areas, you will already be used to seeing more officers than usual.
01:42In other places, you may start to see that too.
01:47They will be deploying unpredictably, which means sometimes you will see them and sometimes
01:53you won't.
01:54But please know we are with you.
01:58Police forces up and down the country routinely work with community and faith groups, and this
02:03will continue as we seek their support and assistance in keeping the UK safe.
02:09And we continue to work with businesses who are advising, we are advising, to review their
02:14protective security plans to ensure they have everything they need in place.
02:20And I want you to know, we have the full range of counter-terrorism tactical options at our disposal,
02:28and these will be deployed nationally and without hesitation wherever we see fit.
02:34And alongside our partners, we are reviewing our case work, live investigations and subjects
02:41of interest.
02:43Now, many of you will be wanting to know what you are being asked to do following the change
02:49in threat level.
02:50And I understand that this announcement may cause you concern, but I ask that you be alert,
02:56alert, but not alarmed.
02:58But not alarmed.
