Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has said he plans to run for president next year while seeking to moderate his family’s political legacy.

In an interview with Reuters, Flavio Bolsonaro said he would pursue smaller government, tax cuts and privatizations, while distancing himself from the right-wing culture wars that defined much of his father’s presidency. He described himself as “a more centred Bolsonaro.”

The senator said he plans an international tour in early 2026, with potential visits to the United States, Argentina, Chile, Israel, Europe and the Middle East. His candidacy has unsettled financial markets, as investors had expected the former president to back a more experienced conservative figure. Polls show Flavio leading the right-wing field but trailing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a potential run-off.

00:00I always have this profile, to be more moderate, to be more balanced, to be less reactive when I am provoked.
00:21So I really consider myself a more centered Bolsonaro.
00:25And a word that I heard in one of these meetings with the market people was pointing to me,
00:36this is the Bolsonaro that we always wanted.
00:44This is another difference, I am a Bolsonaro who took a vaccine.
00:47I took two doses of AstraZeneca, and my father preferred not to.
00:54He bought a vaccine, I took the vaccine.
00:57And I said to him, wait, wait, because the time will say if you are right,
01:01if you are right, if these vaccines have the efficacy that they are saying,
01:04if they don't bring the effects of the colaterals that we suspect that they will bring.
01:09That they will bring dignity to their home,
01:12because we have to add something else in this chapa, in this composition.
01:20If you have a Bolsonaro, it would not make much sense.
01:24And we would still lose a possibility of a Michelle or a Carlos, for example,
01:29like you said,
01:31to be elected as a senator of the Republic,
01:33which is the intention of both,
01:36the Carlos in Santa Catarina,
01:38and the Michelle in the DF.
01:39Because the National Congress will also be very important,
01:42and also, in this virada of chave that the Brazil will give it a partir of 2027,
01:45we have to have a person of right, conservative,
01:50that will combat the right corruption in this country,
01:53in this country,
01:54sitting in the seat of the President of the Republic,
01:56with a Congress that is aligned with these same values.
01:59Three, four, five, five,
02:00ten times more than what they gain from the Bolsa Família.
02:03With this plan,
02:04who is helping me,
02:05is my brother,
02:06the President Eduardo Bolsonaro,
02:08who is a person who,
02:09over the last 10 years,
02:11built this international relationship,
02:13outside the Brazil.
02:14So, I intend to be in the United States,
02:16I intend to be here in Latin America,
02:18I intend to be in countries like Argentina,
02:22Chile,
02:23where the current president,
02:24has shown us that the right is strong,
02:26it is a very strong wave here in the South America,
02:29I intend to go to Israel,
02:31I intend to go to some countries from the Middle East,
02:34and Europe.
02:35He wants people,
02:37as people who are ignorant,
02:54in the United States now,
02:55from the US,
02:56from the other people.
02:57Ultimately,
02:58I have a couple of questions,
02:59but it is time to run,
03:00because I'm ready to go to the British and the United States,
03:01and I can't believe so.
03:03It was a very interesting part of my staff,
03:04except for us,
03:05and that was not a good thing,
03:06where to get to the United States.
03:07I'm not ready to go to the United States.
03:09I'm ready to put a contract,
03:10and I'm ready to sit in the table,
03:11and I've got a contract with this project.
03:12And I've got to fill out the two-point period,
03:14and then I've got to give the contract with this part.
