00:00I mean, it's been six years and still no one here likes me.
00:04I'm gonna get onto HQ, tell them to send down a detective.
00:07We don't need another detective.
00:09Mackenzie Clark, Detective Inspector, Metropolitan Police.
00:12This is your house. You can see it from a search.
00:15You grew up here, and you chose to move to London.
00:18Apparently you're under suspension.
00:19Please, don't call me again.
00:21No, don't go.
00:23Hi.
00:24Is there anything going on between D.A. Clark and Glen Strong?
00:26I mean, unless you count her leaving him at the altar
00:29six years ago, flying to London and never speaking to him again.
00:33Yeah, well, running away from something doesn't mean it's over.
00:36That ship has sailed to calmer, kinder waters.
00:39Will you marry me?
00:41Yes.
00:42I heard from D.I. Mooney that your inquiry is finished.
00:45I am free to go back to London.
00:48I know, Frankie. I know.
00:51I think I still love her, too.
00:59But?
01:05It's funny, Mark.
01:10Sorry.
01:12It's mad rush.
01:13Just a moment in the line there!
01:15I'm standing at rivals.
01:17I'm standing at a rival.
01:21I've been waiting half an hour.
01:23Well, that's clearly a lie.
01:25You're puffing.
01:27It's not a lie.
01:28You do know I am a detective.
01:30I'm just breathless with anticipation.
01:36You might have to wait a little longer.
01:39Didn't quite make it to the airport.
01:42You think you could have told me this before I nearly blew up my heart running?
01:45Ah, so it was a lie.
01:47What happened?
01:48Uh, I stopped to think about something and I guess that was yesterday.
01:55Think about what?
01:56I thought you solved your case.
01:58No, not my case.
01:59It was a personal matter.
02:03As I recall, you don't have those.
02:06It's just that the last time I did, I ran away and I think maybe I should try not to do that anymore.
02:15Oh, we're talking about your failed wedding, are we?
02:17Well, I was trying to be oblique.
02:19You do know I'm a detective.
02:21If I didn't know any better, Mackenzie, I'd say you were having feelings.
02:26I'm not having feelings.
02:28Sort them out.
02:28Give me a call when you're done.
02:29No, I'm just going to get on the next plane.
02:33Sorry, breaking up here.
02:35Don't you dare.
02:36Bad line.
02:38No, no, no, wait, wait, wait.
02:39Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
03:09Can you get those samples into the fridge and quickly this time?
03:19Of course, but you're late.
03:20They're waiting.
03:22We're in the business of stopping human ageing.
03:27And our groundbreaking shark research is at the very centre of that vision.
03:31I am extremely proud to announce that Shark Tech, formerly a part of South Coast University, has begun to attract the attention.
03:42I'm way behind. I'll see you back at the lab.
03:44Do I want to stay for the pitch?
03:46I wrote the pitch.
03:46It's a monumental moment for us.
03:48Clementine Clebelli, Dolphin Cove Echo.
03:51Can you explain how shark research will actually help us stop ageing?
03:55For that, I would now like to hand over to one of the world's leading shark experts.
04:02Associate Professor, Brian Chandler.
04:05Uh, thank you, Asha.
04:08We've been carrying out genetic research into how white sharks stabilise and adapt their DNA.
04:14We've also been tracking them to...
04:16Why don't you just leave them alone?
04:18I'm sorry, you're from...
04:19You know who I am.
04:22Can you explain how trapping sharks on drumlines is impacting on fish populations?
04:28It's not.
04:29Well, that's not what the fishermen are saying.
04:31If we could please bring it back to Shark Tech's research.
04:38Clementine, a follow-up?
04:51We're charging you double on the way back.
04:54Of course you are.
04:54We're charging you double on the way.
04:56We're charging you double on the way back and area up.
05:13Me, of course you are.
05:15We're charging you double on the way back.
05:17Okay, thank you.
05:18We're just going to go ivory.
05:19And this side tenant came to collectımı.
05:20Good morning.
05:49Not again.
05:50Why didn't you ask him to leave?
06:02Operations mate, not your personal security guard.
06:04He made us look like idiots.
06:06Brian, forget about it.
06:08It went well.
06:10And tomorrow morning there's going to be articles everywhere about the amazing work going on at Shark Tech.
06:15Yeah?
06:16Our work.
06:17Which continues.
06:18Are you going out on the boat?
06:19Yeah, I've got to check the drum lights.
06:21I'll drop you down there.
06:23Okay.
06:23I've got an idea I want to pick your brain about.
06:25All right.
06:45Brian's out and away.
06:49Oh, thank you both so much for this morning.
06:52Shame about what's his name interrupting.
06:55All right.
06:56Ten minutes to catch up on the rest of the day?
06:58Mm-hmm.
06:58Mm-hmm.
06:58Mm-hmm.
06:59All right.
06:59All right.
07:00So, yeah.
07:01You're welcome.
07:01Okay.
07:01All right.
07:02All right.
07:03All right.
07:03All right.
07:04Let's go.
07:34It's illegal without a licence, you know?
07:55She's a pet.
07:56Hmm? What's her name?
07:58Caroline.
07:59How old?
08:0014 months.
08:01Day to birth.
08:0131st July 2024.
08:03Hmm.
08:05Cancer.
08:06Leo.
08:08Well, make sure she's on a lead.
08:11Will do.
08:14Surprise for Daisy's mum's birthday.
08:17She loves them.
08:19Sorry if this is a stupid question, but aren't you meant to be in London?
08:25Yes.
08:27So why aren't you?
08:28Well, it sort of involves, no, let me say it.
08:36No, back.
08:37Stop, hey!
08:38Go, go.
08:42Bye.
08:50Bye.
08:55Bye.
08:56Bye.
08:57Bye.
09:00Bye.
09:02He looks too far going.
09:24Here.
09:29Just watch out for the helmet.
09:30What do you think?
09:33Now fishing?
09:36No.
09:37No rods, no lines.
09:45Ryan Chandler works for Shark Tech.
09:48Looks like a heart attack or stroke.
09:51There's not much we can do for him.
09:54The morgue, they can come and...
09:55He's wearing a silver chain.
09:58Only crime against fashion.
10:01No, it's discolored.
10:09Rotten eggs.
10:11No way.
10:12Yes way.
10:13Parnished metal, rotten eggs.
10:15Hydrogen sulfide gas.
10:17But how could he be gassed?
10:19We're outside in a boat.
10:23There's faint skin irritation around the nose and mouth.
10:26What if it was held to his face?
10:30That'd make sure he inhaled enough of it to kill him.
10:38This is murder.
10:40It might be murder.
10:41I'll know more when I autopsy you.
10:43No, it's murder.
10:45See what else you can find on the body.
10:46Colin, get dressed.
10:51He was my right-hand man.
10:54He's been researching sharks his entire career, even before we met.
10:59This is awful.
11:01You go, hon.
11:02Thanks.
11:03You okay?
11:05My husband.
11:07Craig Park.
11:08Operations.
11:08Did you see Brian this morning?
11:12He spoke at the press conference.
11:14We're on the brink of some significant breakthroughs, so we've spun off from the university.
11:19And more chance of selling out to cosmetic companies who are desperate to break anti-aging?
11:24Good pitch.
11:26Yeah, well, the science is bigger than just a pitch, detective.
11:29What happened after the press conference?
11:31I've got it all here.
11:36And you are?
11:38Susie Heughan.
11:40She's one of our team.
11:42A PhD in marine biology and a wonderful scientist.
11:50Sorry.
11:51The press conference was at 9am out the front of the lab.
11:56Then Asha dropped Brian at the boat.
11:59He had to check the drum lines.
12:00When was this?
12:01Uh, I don't know exactly.
12:04From here to the dock, about 10.30.
12:08Then what?
12:09Well, we came back here and we got on with our day.
12:12What time is that?
12:1511.
12:18And who knew that Brian was going out on the boat?
12:21Just us.
12:22Is there CCTV at the dock?
12:25Yeah, I can help you with that.
12:27Out in the shed.
12:30Well, what do you know about hydrogen sulfide?
12:36Why?
12:38We think it may have been a factor in Brian's death.
12:42Well, we're scientists.
12:44Even first year chemistry students know everything there is to know about H2S.
12:50I wouldn't know anything about gas.
12:54I left school when I was 16, so...
12:57You're a boatman, aren't you?
12:58Don't all boatmen know about hydrogen sulfide in confined spaces?
13:02Say when you're cleaning the head, for example?
13:04I suppose so, yeah.
13:07Hmm.
13:08Probably got what you need to make it in this room.
13:11Brian's loss.
13:13Doesn't seem to have affected you too much.
13:16Yeah, well, I hardly knew the guy, so...
13:18You worked with him.
13:20Yeah, but Brian was too big-brained to talk to me.
13:23Okay, so that is the last 24 hours.
13:26That's all we've got.
13:27I'll leave you to it, then.
13:35Okay, okay.
13:38Here we go.
13:4110.38.
13:43Which fits with Asha driving him down there at around 10.30.
13:47She's on her way back to the lab now to meet the others.
13:52Brian gets on the boat.
13:53And now, we're just waiting for our killer.
14:00What?
14:02It's only him on it.
14:03No, that's not possible.
14:04Where's our killer?
14:05Um, maybe they're already on there?
14:09No, as far as we can tell, the only people that knew he was going to be on that boat
14:12with the Shark Tech crew, and they're all back at the lab by 11.
14:15It's not enough time to get down there, murder him, and get back.
14:20How could any of them murder Brian when he was on a boat in the middle of the water?
14:23Oh, hey, hey, hey.
14:50Dead bloke, alone on a boat.
14:51Is that right?
14:52Um, that's about it.
14:54That's a new one.
14:56Hey, mind you, I nearly choked on an oyster on Mick Michael's tinny New Year's 99.
15:00The Y2K.
15:02Admittedly, I had had a few shardies, so I was not at my best, but still there, but
15:07for the grace of God.
15:09Like, uh, they've sent through the footage of the press conference.
15:11I've been scanning through it a bit.
15:13And I also got the photos of the victim and the lab team right here.
15:19How do you want to run it?
15:21You want the board?
15:21Yeah, I cleaned it up, got it ready for you.
15:23I don't mind.
15:25Yeah, mate, mate, mate.
15:25Yeah.
15:26Don't be shy.
15:27You're the boss.
15:28I may not have been completely forthcoming on the phone.
15:31About what?
15:32Ryan Chandler.
15:34Murdered in the middle of the ocean.
15:37Um, about this situation.
15:39Senior scientist at Shark Tech found dead alone on board Hikari, the research vessel for Shark
15:46Tech.
15:46He got on board alive at 10.38am, according to the CCTV.
15:52He sailed out to sea, while the only people who knew where he was, the Shark Tech crew,
15:57were all back at the lab.
15:59Somewhere out there, he was gassed with hydrogen sulphide, we think held to his face on a cloth.
16:04And he comes ashore, dead, to me and Glenn, at 11.30.
16:09Any questions so far?
16:10Just the one, love.
16:12What the heck are you doing back here?
16:13Yes, Mackenzie, what the heck are you doing back here?
16:16Mm-hmm.
16:17Mm-hmm.
16:18It is a good question.
16:20It is a fair question.
16:25But a man is dead.
16:27And we have work to do.
16:29Detective Sergeant Clark.
16:33We're going to have to have a conversation about this, you understand?
16:37Yes, boss.
16:40All right, off you go.
16:41Shark Tech.
16:53Shark Tech.
16:54Led by Professor Asher Spencer.
16:57Bit of a shark herself.
16:58Mm-hmm.
16:59She owns the lab, thanks to some seed money, she's looking for investment.
17:02She drives Brian to the dock before he sails out to his death,
17:05and then she returns to the lab immediately afterwards.
17:08Craig Park, Asher's husband.
17:14Operations at Shark Tech.
17:15And Susie Heughan, research scientist.
17:20As far as we know, these are the only people that knew that Brian was going to be on that boat.
17:24Nothing in his phone suggests he told anyone outside the lab.
17:27Could it be someone random?
17:29It's murder.
17:31It's never random.
17:32What about the cloth?
17:34Probably at the bottom of the ocean by now.
17:36But, oh, I did, I found, I found this.
17:40Look, look, look.
17:41What did he say?
17:43That is a bit of a red thread.
17:46It was on the gate to the dock, so somebody could have jumped the fence.
17:50Well, I think I might have a lead on that.
17:52There was a guy at the press conference.
17:54He didn't look like a journo, but he was asking some provocative questions.
17:57Why don't you just leave him alone?
18:00There, there, there, there.
18:01Zoom in, zoom in.
18:02Red shirt.
18:04Oh.
18:05Uh.
18:07We need to find out who that is.
18:09I know who that is.
18:11Yeah, that's my ex-husband.
18:17G'day, lads.
18:18G'day, mate.
18:18Hello, gorgeous.
18:19Hi.
18:22G'day, Damo.
18:23Oh, look here.
18:25Well, it didn't take long for you to become a tool of the establishment, did it, Reg?
18:31What happened to defund the police to social care instead of institutionalised power?
18:36Oh, pull your head in, would you?
18:38They just want to chat.
18:40I think I'm entitled to have a legal representative present, aren't I?
18:44We know you interrupted the Shark Tech press conference.
18:47I posed legitimate questions that I have a right to ask.
18:50All of my reporting is properly sourced and published on my website.
18:54Hmm.
18:55Hmm.
18:55Hmm.
18:56Hmm.
18:56Hmm.
18:57Yeah.
18:59Love your shirt.
19:00Jumped any fences recently?
19:04Yesterday, to take some photos, to bear witness to the damage that they're doing to our marine
19:10population and local waters, it's not a crime.
19:14Well, it is.
19:16You know, Brian Chandler.
19:17Brian Chandler, you better know him.
19:18He is one of the worst.
19:20He's out there doing God knows what on the water.
19:22You just keep him away from me.
19:24That's all I'm saying.
19:25Oh, that will not be a problem.
19:32Is he dead?
19:33Oh, well, he wasn't that bad.
19:38I was overcooking that one a little bit.
19:40Where were you after the press conference?
19:42Um, I was everywhere on my bike.
19:44Anyone see you?
19:45Uh, I speak to everybody on my route.
19:48That's what a local community is all about.
19:54We might need to talk to you again.
19:55If I make myself available.
20:00Hey, Reg.
20:02Don't start.
20:03You look really good.
20:05You know, uh, I'd be more than happy to try and find you alternative accommodation.
20:21It's really no bother.
20:24You hate the beach and the view and, well, everything about that house, as far as I can tell.
20:31Whereas I'm one of life's great enthusiasts, a lover of the sand, the sea, and especially
20:38of outdoor baths.
20:39Are you sure you're staying?
20:41Sorry?
20:42Would you consider, and hear me out, an extremely discreet and very quiet lodger?
20:50Absolutely not.
20:51Oh, okay.
20:52Mackenzie, time for that conversation.
20:58Off she goes.
21:00Off to London.
21:02Dreary old dolphin cove receding in the rear view mirror.
21:06And then, I don't know, 24 hours later I get a call from DI Mooney explaining that for,
21:12um, scheduling reasons.
21:15Your job's just not as urgent anymore and you're available to me again.
21:19Temporarily?
21:21Yeah, temporarily.
21:22No, no, of course, yes.
21:26One minute there's a job and the next...
21:28That's unusual.
21:32Don't you think?
21:34Hmm.
21:35Yeah.
21:35Yeah, maybe a little.
21:36Hmm.
21:41Temporary for how long?
21:44I don't know.
21:45There's a few things that I need to sort out.
21:51There's not something going on, is there?
21:52Something I should be concerned about as your senior sergeant?
21:55No.
21:58What about then, just, you know, say...
22:02For example...
22:03As a mother who's very concerned about her son's happiness...
22:08Also, no.
22:17All right, then.
22:19Well.
22:21Welcome back to sunny Dolphin Cove.
22:25Oh, isn't it beautiful today?
22:28Insurance claim from a few months ago.
22:31Hard to piece it together from the paperwork.
22:33But it looked like Brian was accused of some fairly loose behaviour,
22:36which led to the injury of an employee.
22:38Who?
22:40Brian was putting a tracker into a shark.
22:43Landed on my arm.
22:45The tracker?
22:46The shark.
22:49And your shoulder was injured?
22:52It's not that bad.
22:54But you can't get it above your head, can you?
22:58There's nothing on the top shelf.
23:02Unless, do you want to...
23:03Why don't you pop that up there?
23:05Go on, prove me wrong.
23:06With your left hand.
23:23A PhD in marine biology,
23:25and they won't ensure you to be on the water.
23:29Why didn't you quit?
23:32I've been working with Asher since undergrad.
23:34I'm not going to throw away my career with her because of a setback.
23:39But all your grand ambitions just ripped from you because of Brian.
23:45Angry about it?
23:47Not at all.
23:49Sharks are powerful animals and can be unpredictable.
23:52Sometimes, when dealing with them in the field, accidents can occur despite the best efforts of everyone involved.
24:03That's it for today.
24:05Thanks for taking the time.
24:06What do shark tech do with sharks?
24:22Research them.
24:23Track them.
24:24Acoustic tag we found on the boat.
24:26They don't use GPS?
24:28Mm-mm.
24:29GPS doesn't work from inside a shark, which is where they put these.
24:33So, after the press conference, Asher drives Brian down to the dock.
24:37He gets on the boat alone, sails away.
24:40At 10.38.
24:43At 10.57, the tracker records a ping from the listening station on this boy.
24:5311.14.
24:54And then it comes ashore to Glen and me at 11.30.
24:59So, according to those four data points,
25:04dock where he left,
25:06boy one ping, boy two ping,
25:09and then to the beach, Glen and me.
25:10That is a rough approximation of the boat's path.
25:13Well, it couldn't have gone somewhere else.
25:15If it went along the coast, someone could have got on board to kill Brian.
25:18Mm-mm.
25:19Because that boat has a top speed of about 20 knots.
25:21For the boat to travel that distance in that time,
25:25it had to sail straight out to sea.
25:28And at that speed, to get a boat to it, tie it up while moving.
25:32I mean, it's the same for a jet ski.
25:33It's the same for a kayak.
25:35No one could get on board.
25:37And even if they could,
25:38the only people that know that he's there,
25:40well, they're all back at the lab by the time he's at the first boy.
25:44How did someone manage to murder him?
25:47It's impossible.
25:48Brian's office, did you find anything?
25:50Uh, not really.
25:52Gym bag, top, towels, shoes, wristband thingy.
25:56Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.
25:59What about his shorts?
26:01What?
26:02In his bag?
26:03Top, towel, shoes, wristband thingy.
26:05No shorts?
26:07No.
26:08Who goes to the gym without shorts?
26:11Oh, hello, Frankie.
26:24Come here.
26:25Hey, gorgeous.
26:27Where's Glenn, eh?
26:29I've got Brian Chandler first up tomorrow.
26:31I'll, uh, give you a call when I'm done.
26:35Shorts?
26:37What?
26:40You're wearing shorts?
26:42Which you would normally do if you were going to exercise.
26:46Uh, normally, yeah.
26:48Hmm.
26:49We're back.
26:50Hi.
26:53See?
26:54Shorts.
26:56Aren't you meant to be in...
26:58In London?
26:58I am.
27:01Yeah.
27:02Yeah.
27:02But you're not?
27:03No.
27:04Um, I was just actually explaining that to Glenn's work stuff and the fast-paced environment
27:15of modern policing.
27:18That's it?
27:18That's it.
27:20Well, Glenn didn't say anything.
27:23Oh, it only happened a couple of hours ago.
27:25Oh.
27:27All righty.
27:29Well, um, welcome back.
27:32Are we off?
27:33Yeah, let's do it.
27:36Frankie.
27:37All right.
27:38What are we doing?
27:39Around the headland, up the hill.
27:41Okay.
27:42Oh.
27:50Yoo-hoo.
27:51Come in.
27:55Oh.
27:56Okay.
27:57Oh.
27:59Well, I made it to Jean.
28:02Way too much, of course.
28:04But I thought you could make use of it because you probably got nothing in the house.
28:17All unpacked?
28:18Nope.
28:24Can I ask?
28:25Mm.
28:26What happened?
28:31Operational stuff, you know.
28:34Scheduling.
28:36Scheduling.
28:37Mm.
28:37It's a nightmare.
28:41Well, it's lovely to have you back, honey.
28:46Even if it's just for a little bit.
28:47It's a toodaloo.
28:49Reggie.
28:50Mm.
28:55How did you know with Damo?
28:59When it was done?
29:03I made a decision, and that was it.
29:07Never again.
29:07That simple.
29:11Well, honey, it wasn't simple at all.
29:15But all you can do is follow your heart.
29:19Away from someone like me, or...
29:23Towards them.
29:24What if you can't go towards them?
29:32Mm.
29:33When do the...
29:36Symptoms go away?
29:40You mean...
29:41feelings?
29:42Mm.
29:42They don't.
29:49But I've always thought, if you do something for the right reason,
29:53the world just comes up to meet you.
29:56Asphyxiated.
30:09Asphyxiated.
30:21And I found a few fibres in his mouth and nose.
30:24So we can conclude.
30:26Hydrogen sulphide gas.
30:28Applied direct to the face on a cloth or something similar.
30:31How quickly?
30:32Seconds. A few breaths.
30:33He was also on anticoagulants.
30:36He had a bad heart.
30:37At risk of clots, it looks like.
30:39He went to the gym.
30:41Wouldn't have been my advice.
30:43Reckon any doctor would agree he should not have been working out.
30:46Would have killed him?
30:48Pretty high risk of some sort of episode.
30:49Right, so whoever killed him wanted it to look like a heart attack.
30:52Or a stroke.
30:53And it did.
30:54Until you came along.
30:57Here's something else, though.
30:59He had bruising on his neck.
31:01Is it from the struggle?
31:02With H2S, there's barely any struggle.
31:04This is older, I'd say, from being choked.
31:08Okay, great.
31:08More to go on.
31:10Is that it?
31:11That's it.
31:12We'll see you later.
31:21I'm still doing the report.
31:23I'll send it over.
31:24I heard you.
31:29Yeah, I'm standing right here.
31:33At your engagement party.
31:37After I left.
31:38What are you talking about?
31:42I came back.
31:46Frankie, she got in the cab.
31:47And then I brought her back and then she ran to you.
31:49And, uh, I heard what you said about your feelings towards me.
32:01Um, I wanted to know, is that real?
32:10Mac?
32:11Reggie, on the phone.
32:14I couldn't quite make out exactly what she was saying.
32:16Oh.
32:17Uh, needs us back, apparently.
32:18Now, where is it?
32:33Uh, not this one.
32:34Uh, oh, here it is.
32:35So, have a look at this.
32:37This is the marine impact plan, which mysteriously got signed off by council, incomplete.
32:43What's this?
32:44Evidence.
32:45The fruits of my citizen journalism and some Turkish delight.
32:49If you'd like some.
32:50It's Reggie's favourite.
32:51Oh, God.
32:51It's beautiful.
32:54No.
32:55Yeah?
32:56No.
32:56No.
32:57No, we will leave you to the Turkish delight for now.
33:03I'm downloading all the historical data from that tracker you found on the boat.
33:09That's a lot of shark tracking data.
33:10No, I don't mind.
33:11Oh, and then we're going to go to the gym.
33:13It kept me up all last night trying to figure out why wouldn't he bring shorts.
33:18What's that?
33:19Uh, that's all their research.
33:20They have to make it accessible, or at least they did until they took the whole thing private.
33:25Strict marine curfews, but, you know, there they are, on the boat, you know, clandestine meetings.
33:32Um, that's all the accounts.
33:34How'd you get their accounts?
33:35I am not allowed to reveal my sources.
33:38Wait.
33:39Wait.
33:39Wait, wait, wait.
33:40Wait, wait, wait, wait.
33:42What?
33:42Wait, what?
33:43What?
33:44What?
33:44What was that about clandestine meetings?
33:47Finally, someone wants to do their job.
33:51Damo was there a few weeks ago taking photographs.
33:55Look who he saw down at the dock.
33:57Asha and Brian.
33:58Mm.
34:01And it looks like they were more than just colleagues.
34:07You know he wants to be a detective one day?
34:10Felix.
34:11If you're looking for a protégé.
34:14If you're staying, I mean.
34:16Colin, stop asking me if I'm staying.
34:18Are you OK?
34:18Stop asking me if I'm OK.
34:19Literally the first time I've asked you.
34:21I don't know if I'm staying.
34:22Yes, I'm OK.
34:22And Felix, well, if you're serious, you'll come to me.
34:24Mm.
34:26Ooh.
34:26Ooh.
34:27Ooh.
34:27Ooh.
34:29Ooh.
34:29Did you take the uniform home?
34:31Oh, dear.
34:33Emma.
34:34Ahem.
34:35OK, thanks.
34:38Thanks for assisting us.
34:39And we will be in touch.
34:43Dismissed.
34:44Yes, ma'am.
34:44Yeah.
34:45Yes.
34:45Busy morning.
35:07Yep.
35:08We were without a boat, weren't we?
35:10Lots of catch-up to do.
35:12Thanks, hon.
35:12Doesn't that let the water in?
35:17Sure does.
35:19A few years ago, white shark, she politely asked me to leave her territory.
35:23You're attacked?
35:25Bitten.
35:26Why not buy a new wetsuit?
35:28Because wearing this one is a constant reminder that the ocean belongs to its creatures and not us.
35:33Can you, uh, can you explain this?
35:39Can't quite make it out.
35:40Oh, well, that's you and that's Brian on board the Hikari.
35:47Looks pretty intimate.
35:49Were you having an affair?
35:55I wouldn't call it an affair.
35:57OK.
35:57What would you call it?
35:58A very human mistake.
36:01Brian was having a tough time.
36:05He was going through a traumatic divorce.
36:06He came to me for comfort.
36:09Comfort.
36:12We've worked together for over 20 years.
36:15Most weeks, I'd spend more time with him than my own husband.
36:19I'm not proud of it.
36:20It happened.
36:21So I ended it.
36:22How did Brian take it?
36:24He put his head down and he continued to work.
36:28And that's all I care about.
36:31Did your husband know?
36:34Of course I knew.
36:35I'm not an idiot.
36:37She was taking off in her gym gear and coming back fresh as a daisy.
36:41So what if his missus left him and took him to the cleaners?
36:44Find another woman to dry your eyes.
36:45What did you do?
36:48I had a conversation with him.
36:49Told him you don't touch another man's wallet or his wife.
36:53Think you got the message.
36:54Did you have your hands around his throat during this conversation?
36:59Maybe.
37:01Can't remember exactly.
37:02You see, the thing is, Craig.
37:04You throw him, you choke him, and then the next thing he turns up dead on your boat.
37:09Yeah, but like I already said, I was nowhere near it.
37:11If you want to arrest me, lady, do it.
37:14Otherwise, I'm a little bit busy trying to catch up on the day you guys stole from us.
37:17You know, when you ransacked the boat.
37:21We will be back.
37:23I don't know what came over me.
37:27Like, three years.
37:29I've hardly seen him.
37:31I've barely thought about him.
37:32He was a terrible husband.
37:34But there's always been, like, this...
37:37This energy between us.
37:41Energy?
37:41Oh, it's pulsating.
37:45And it's undeniable.
37:47And for all his faults, and there were plenty,
37:50there was always one place
37:52that we never had any problems.
37:55I mean, never again.
37:57That is a promise.
37:59Right?
38:00Here we go.
38:03What's in there?
38:04Nothing.
38:05Yeah, but hey, look at this.
38:06Look at this.
38:06Hi, this is Damo's blog.
38:10Shining a light on the truth.
38:12So, I found a post on Damo's blog.
38:15It's just a short one.
38:16RIP Nigel, funeral at Marigold Funeral Home, date and time.
38:20Who's Nigel?
38:21Oh, just an old mate of his.
38:22I didn't realise I was back in touch.
38:25So, I called Maeve at Marigold.
38:27She's in my swimming group.
38:28Oh, my gosh.
38:29You would not believe how quick she moves through the water.
38:33She's just had a hip replacement.
38:34Reggie, Reggie.
38:35OK.
38:37She recorded the funeral, and Damo spoke.
38:41Nigel fished these waters since he was a boy, and their research took it away.
38:52And when it was gone, he had nothing left to live for.
38:57Nigel, I'm going to miss you.
39:00You got me through some of the toughest times of my life.
39:04The doctor said heart attack.
39:07But we all know who really killed you.
39:11Here's what we know, Damo.
39:13You blame shark tech for the death of your friend.
39:15You bet I blame them.
39:16It's their fault.
39:18Drum lines everywhere.
39:19Huge increase in sharks in the fisheries.
39:22Half the catch gone.
39:23So, you've got a motive.
39:25You admitted to sneaking into the dock.
39:27Well, public land.
39:29Should be.
39:30Was that a dry run?
39:31Were you going to figure out how you were going to do it?
39:34Just answer them.
39:36Nothing happened.
39:38I snuck in a couple of days ago.
39:40I went to the announcement yesterday.
39:43I asked my questions, and then I went to work.
39:46I mean, sure, I want to stop shark tech, but he's dead, and they're still full steam ahead.
39:53I couldn't have done it anyway.
39:54I've never even been on that boat.
39:55And he's right.
40:00We know he didn't get on the boat the day of the murder.
40:02We've seen the CCTV.
40:04We know that nobody got on the boat, other than Brian, and he was alive when he did.
40:08And the other three shark tech suspects, well, they're all on dry land while he was murdered
40:12out at sea.
40:26Why are you staring at me?
40:28Well, just normally when you go quiet, it's because you're about to solve it.
40:35How'd you go at the gym?
40:37Nothing.
40:37Empty locker.
40:39No shorts?
40:39No, nothing.
40:40The staff at the front desk confirmed he's there a bit, but never uses the actual gym.
40:45You know who else is a member, though?
40:47Asha Svensson.
40:48Yeah.
40:49And she comes back from the gym fresh as a daisy, according to Craig.
40:55So, why are they both going to a gym that they don't use?
41:00Do you have the shark tech accounts?
41:01Yep.
41:03I haven't been through them properly.
41:05I've been deep in data from that tracker we found on the boat.
41:09It's all a bit weird.
41:10It's not making sense.
41:11Try checking them against the published shark tech figures.
41:15I'll work it out.
41:17P&T Marine Maintenance.
41:20Glenn got a little slap in the face from a piece of torn fabric on the awning.
41:24So?
41:25So?
41:26So?
41:26They are apparently spending thousands of dollars on boat maintenance, but they didn't fix that
41:31torn fabric?
41:32So where's the money going?
41:34Blackmail?
41:35Exactly.
41:38We're here to see Asha.
41:40Again?
41:41Just go and get her.
41:46Oh, hang on.
41:47Before you do.
41:51Why didn't you fix the fabric on the awning of the Hikari?
41:54On our budget?
41:56You're kidding me.
42:00So Brian was Blackmailing her?
42:03There's no other explanation.
42:04Money for P&T boat maintenance not being spent on fixing the boat, but rather being taken
42:11out in cash by Asha.
42:12She couldn't just be embedding it?
42:14Mm-mm.
42:16She was going to the gym, but she was coming back fresh as a daisy.
42:19I think she's going to the gym, putting that money in Brian's locker.
42:22Brian, who never went to the gym because of his heart condition, is picking it up.
42:28I mean, the man doesn't even have shorts.
42:32I mean, it doesn't change the facts.
42:36He was murdered in the middle of the ocean, whilst Asha's back at the lab with Susie and
42:40Craig.
42:41I mean, how could she?
42:43It's discoloured.
42:45Glenn got slapped.
42:47The fabric slapped Glenn.
42:48Yes, you've mentioned that.
42:50But then when Brian got on...
42:53Do you have the CCTV?
42:55Uh, yes.
42:58There.
42:59It's not torn.
43:01What's not?
43:02Fabric.
43:03The fabric on the awning.
43:07But...
43:08If it's not torn...
43:11And that's Asha's tank, then...
43:14No, the only way that's possible is...
43:17What are you talking about?
43:33Oh, that's bold.
43:34What's bold?
43:36Come on, Colin!
43:38Where are you going?
43:41The timeline was so tight.
43:53It couldn't be too far from the lab, or they'd never make it back in time.
43:58What couldn't be too far?
44:01That.
44:03Sweet Lord above.
44:04A quiet morning at the beach.
44:22It's what the good people of Dolphin Cove were enjoying.
44:29Until the Hikari came chugging ashore with the body of Brian Chandler on board.
44:35Looking for all the world like a tragic but unsurprising death of a man with a heart condition.
44:42But Brian Chandler was murdered, gassed with hydrogen sulfide, held his face on a cloth.
44:52Somehow he sailed that boat out to sea alive and came ashore dead, alone the whole time.
44:59How is that possible?
45:00I will get to that, because to understand the how, we have to understand the why.
45:05Craig, you attacked Brian for an affair he was having with your wife, Asha.
45:11At least that's what you assumed it was.
45:13Why wouldn't you?
45:14It's what it looked like to us too, in Damo's photographs.
45:18And it is what you told us, Asha.
45:20Damo's aim was to capture some evidence that could sink Shark Tech.
45:25Turns out he did.
45:28But it wasn't an affair.
45:30What those photographs captured was a threat.
45:32Brian was blackmailing you.
45:35You couldn't pay him out of your own pocket.
45:38The money had to come through Shark Tech.
45:40But there's not really a budget line for blackmail.
45:42But there is for thousands of dollars of boat maintenance.
45:46Which is weird, when you couldn't afford to fix a bit of torn fabric on the awning of the Hikari.
45:51But why?
45:54Why was Brian blackmailing you?
45:56The answer, Felix.
45:59Tracking beacon 427.
46:02According to your published data, that track has been in a white shark for the last two years.
46:07When Constable Wilkinson downloaded the actual raw data, trying to correlate it with what you'd published.
46:11Well, where had it been, Felix?
46:13On the boat the whole time.
46:14You were faking your data.
46:16And Brian figured it out.
46:18And with a brutal divorce to pay for, he was squeezing you.
46:23I didn't kill him.
46:25I will get to that.
46:27Because the question we couldn't answer was how could Brian be murdered when he was on a boat alone in the middle of the ocean?
46:37When we looked at the CCTV, we assumed it was Brian on the boat.
46:42But it wasn't, was it, Asha?
46:47Cap on, same jacket, trolley as a cover.
46:50Knowing the cameras were far away, you assumed that no one would be able to tell that it was a different person.
46:56Or, and this is the really bold part, that it was a different boat.
47:01There were two boats used in this murder.
47:08The Hikari that Brian sailed away and came ashore on, and a second boat.
47:11The boat on the CCTV, the boat that you, Asha, sailed away from the dock at 10.38, disguised as Brian.
47:18The boats were made up to look, oh, almost identical, but with one small difference.
47:25The fabric on the awning of the Hikari is torn, and on the decoy boat, pristine.
47:30Brian sailed away on the real boat, the Hikari, which you drove him to, that was tied up at another dock.
47:39But waiting on board, hiding, was your accomplice, protecting themselves from the deadly hydrogen sulfide in scuba gear.
47:47Then it was easy enough for the killer to escape over the side, leaving Brian dead on board, and the Hikari sailing out to sea.
47:55Meanwhile, Asha's driving that boat back to where we found it, picking up the killer from the water along the way.
48:02That is an audacious plan that made it look like Brian was killed out on the water while the killers were on dry land.
48:09It was a watertight alibi.
48:12Does that sound about right, Susie?
48:14What?
48:16You knew about the blackmail.
48:19I mean, you're across everything in that lab.
48:22You know where the money's going.
48:24You hated Brian.
48:26You took your dream of being on the water away from you.
48:29But most importantly, you idolise Asha.
48:34Your career is tethered to her research.
48:37If she goes down, so do you.
48:41And I think that you would do anything to stop that happening.
48:47I was here the whole time.
48:49You left the press conference early.
48:51We saw you on the footage online.
48:53To go to the lab.
48:54To wait for Brian on the boat.
48:56Wearing Asha's scuba gear since you don't have any.
48:59Because they won't insure you to be on the water.
49:02And it's Asha's tank that's discoloured from the gas.
49:04Sorry, this is the most ridiculous story I've ever heard.
49:12Yeah.
49:14Yeah, it probably is, isn't it?
49:19Oh, it did sound convincing though.
49:21Just for a moment.
49:25Although, and just humour me here for a minute.
49:27We know whoever killed Brian was wearing Asha's wetsuit.
49:30And whoever was wearing Asha's wetsuit
49:32is going to have irritated skin from the one place
49:34that the gas could get to,
49:35which is the holes in the arms
49:36from where she was bitten by a shark.
49:40And she doesn't have them.
49:42He doesn't have them.
49:43He doesn't have them either.
49:45So, would you mind rolling up your sleeve?
49:49Okay.
49:51Constable Wilkinson.
49:55May I?
49:55Excuse your fingers.
50:09Susie, you went.
50:12Asha Svensson.
50:15Everything I've worked for, gone.
50:18I never should have trusted you with anything.
50:21You were under arrest for the murder of Brian Chandler.
50:23He didn't have to say anything about anything.
50:39He didn't go.
50:40Two boats. Bold.
50:55Yeah.
50:57Yeah.
51:00Very bold.
51:06What I said at the engagement party.
51:11It was an emotional moment.
51:14You were leaving and...
51:16Yes, I said it.
51:19I felt it even.
51:23But it's not.
51:28We had our chance, is what I'm saying.
51:33Yeah, we did.
51:36We're getting married.
51:38I know.
51:40It's, uh...
51:43It's fantastic.
51:46I mean...
51:48It's not why you came back, is it?
51:55No.
51:57That is...
51:59Scheduling.
52:01Um...
52:02It's complicated, but it's...
52:04It's nothing to do with...
52:05It is.
52:07Which isn't a thing, anyway.
52:10No.
52:16Um...
52:17I guess that is all there is to say about that, then.
52:23Enjoy yourself.
52:26Yeah.
52:27Hey.
52:47Hey.
52:48Hey.
52:48Hey.
52:53I knew they were no good.
53:00I'm sorry about Nigel.
53:02Yeah, he was a good bloke.
53:04Yeah.
53:04He was there for me after you left,
53:07when I didn't have anybody.
53:16I'm not a tool of the establishment.
53:18By the way, for the police.
53:20I do important work.
53:22Yeah, yeah.
53:22Of course, yeah.
53:23Help little old ladies with their parking tickets.
53:27Sure.
53:28Wow.
53:30What?
53:31Never again, Damo.
53:34Never again.
53:36What?
53:38Rach?
53:40What did I say?
53:43Rach, what did I do?
53:44It's done.
53:56I can come back.
53:59What do you mean it's done?
54:00Whatever feelings
54:02there were,
54:04it's not a thing.
54:07Can you book me on a flight?
54:09I'm afraid it's not quite that simple, D.I. Clark.
54:12So many moving parts here,
54:14cases in varying states of flux.
54:17I'll be needing that file by the end of the day.
54:19I know you're at the pub.
54:21Nonsense.
54:21I can hear the fire crackling
54:23and the rain on the windows.
54:25And I'd say you're about a third to
54:27halfway through a pint.
54:29You're second.
54:33You're good.
54:34I always said it.
54:36Regardless,
54:37it's going to be a while
54:38before we can slot you back in.
54:40But yesterday you were running
54:42to meet me at the airport.
54:43Well, this is the fast-paced environment
54:44of modern policing.
54:45You're at the pub.
54:47On my day off.
54:48So what?
54:48I can't come back.
54:50I'm saying
54:50that whatever stuck you getting on that plane
54:53isn't something you just deal with overnight.
54:56Yes, it is.
54:56I just told you that.
54:58There's something in that town
54:59that you have to make your peace with.
55:02At the very least,
55:04there's no job for you here.
55:05What, so you're saying I'm stuck here?
55:08Again?
55:10I'm afraid so.
55:15The famously volatile Point Ruin
55:39are back in Dolphin Coast.
55:41I thought they hated each other.
55:42Oh, that is an oversimplification
55:44of a complicated dynamic.
55:46You never got the truth with Point Ruin.
55:48You only get the socks.
55:49I would be delighted to attend
55:51yours and Daisy's wedding.
55:52Great.
55:53They were all in that theatre together
55:55at the moment of murder.
55:57Or were they?
55:58Have you RSVP'd yet?
56:00No, it would be okay for this person to go.
56:03As long as this person
56:04didn't ruin it again.
56:14Well, you're the one.
56:16You should have been
56:32there.
56:33This is a member of the perché,
56:34and she's the one that knows how long
56:35you're risultées in track of.
