00:00loved her profession it was a calling for her to help people who were in the midst of crisis
00:07sam had a way with people that was her passion a tragic discovery
00:14she was shot three times with a small caliber weapon a secret romance they asked me if i knew
00:23who the father of samantha's baby was and i did not know a web of lies the motive was just really
00:31really crazy in this case can tell you who actually pulled the trigger but is it business
00:36was she killed because of her job or a killer relationship you tell me how do you forgive
00:53the truth is tenacious determined strong these are just some of the words used to describe
01:07samantha dean when samantha's in sixth grade she writes in her journal that she wants to become a
01:12police officer so she can go out and help others it becomes her mission to make sure those in need
01:19feel safe but samantha's mission is cut short when at 29 she's found dead miles from home and the
01:28horrific truth about what brought her promising life to an end shocks a city and rattles the law
01:34enforcement community it's 2 9 a.m when deputy brian ray is with the bashk county sheriff's office is
01:47performing a routine check of a vacant shopping center parking lot he first noticed that there
01:54was a black charger parked in this dumpster enclosure which piqued his interest that's not a very usual
02:00place to park a vehicle especially in the middle of the night anybody else in the vehicle the center's
02:06office as he gets closer he notices a body flying halfway out of the passenger side of the car covered in black
02:20plastic are you awake the sheriff's office the victim appears deceased they determined that they had a
02:27homicide first responders from the bastrop county sheriff's office identified the victim as 29 year
02:47old samantha dean what we learned in those early hours is that samantha dean worked in law enforcement
02:55and was a victim services counselor not that you don't give effort in all your cases but the law
03:01enforcement community it takes murder like this very seriously when it's one of their own that is a victim
03:15from the moment she was born on may 12 1985 near military base in nuremberg germany samantha elizabeth
03:23dean is full of surprises we were told the baby was going to be the boy we didn't realize it was a
03:32girl until she popped out and the doctor said oh you have a girl and it was three days later before we had a name
03:39for her right away samantha just had that it factor i didn't want her to grow up you just wanted her to be
03:50around all the time in 1998 when i exit the military we moved to san antonio texas to pursue our dreams as
04:00a civilians this is the first video camera i've ever had and it's really neat bye see you later i met sam
04:11when we were 15 we became great friends she just had an aura that everybody was attracted to her
04:22i was a homebody i didn't like to go out and she was the one person that could lure me out
04:30she was never that type of girl chasing boys she wasn't that person at least not that i was aware of
04:39we were giggly and you know all enamored with the boys but we wanted the best of them we knew at an
04:48early age we wanted to find the one but the one will have to wait samantha's got more important things
04:56on her mind when she was in sixth grade she said she wanted to become a police officer when she told me
05:04that she wanted to be a police officer was not a surprise because sam has a way with people and
05:09speaking to people and de-escalating situations and just connecting with people and i knew that she
05:18would be amazing at it when she graduated in 2003 she settled on university of texas in san antonio
05:26but during her freshman year 18 year old samantha starts to feel chronic and unexplained pain she was
05:35having some difficulty of being able to really move her left arm and it started to get stiffer it got
05:43to the point where she couldn't move it anymore and we found out that she had sarcoma cancer in her
05:49left elbow she started chemo treatment and we did that for two and a half months she went in every
05:57day reporting live from methodist ambulatory surgical hospital this is my third operation on my elbow
06:10she had that fight in her it was going to be challenging but it was not a doubt in her mind
06:21that she was going to beat it and she does beat it with the cancer in remission samantha plans to
06:27fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a police officer but she faces another setback the lasting
06:33effects of the cancer and its treatment have left her with limited mobility in her left hand and elbow
06:40she's unable to meet the strict physical requirements necessary to join the force down but not out
06:47samantha looks for another way to serve her community samantha graduated in december of 2007 from utsa
06:59she still was thinking fbi something she wanted to go to new york to pursue a master's degree after
07:08graduating from john jay college with a master's degree in psychology and criminal justice samantha
07:14heads back to texas she applies for and is accepted to work as a volunteer at the austin police
07:21department in their victims advocate unit the majority of the calls that we got were domestic violence
07:28sexual assault and death calls she would write out in the city vehicle with me and we'd go to calls
07:34together as a victim's advocate as a victim's advocate she could be there with those individuals
07:42when they needed it in 2012 samantha's offered a full-time job at the kyle police department half an
07:50hour south of austin as their first victim services advocate samantha was there during the notifications
07:58of death of the family to help them bring comfort to the family to guide them through that difficult
08:06time in their lives samantha works at the kyle police department for just over two and a half years
08:12but now her dream is shattered cruelly taken away from her in the shadows of a dark vacant parking lot far
08:20from home she was shot three times with a small caliber weapon you can see there's a lot of blood
08:28that's pooled in the center console that looks like she had probably been shot in the driver's seat
08:35and then slumped over there was evidence that she was drug across the front passenger seat and then ultimately
08:42on the ground just outside the front passenger seat of the vehicle and there was no fingerprints or
08:48shell casing it was collected from the crime scene the absence of evidence suggests the killer
08:54or killers made an effort to clean up but what they left behind peaks investigators interest
09:01there was some marijuana placed in the vehicle that was sitting on top of the blood rather than
09:07blood being on top of it so it was obvious that that was placed down after the crime had occurred so
09:11it appeared that the crime scene was staged to kind of make it look like a drug deal had gone bad or
09:16something to that nature also they found in the center console an atm receipt that showed a withdrawal
09:22for 100 earlier that same night and approximately 100 in cash in the center console the atm receipt
09:30told us 9 36 p.m she was at the valero gas station at william cannon i-35 and that was significant
09:38because it gave them a starting point to go back to that store and get surveillance video and what the
09:44investigators find next might provide valuable answers there was a phone found inside her vehicle
09:50that was her personal phone initial thing was to get into that phone and figure out who she was
09:56communicating with and there is something else when examining samantha's body the investigators realize
10:04there is a second victim samantha it appeared was pregnant
10:12it's bad enough that you get a woman prime of her life senselessly murdered you got a baby that didn't
10:19have the opportunity to live a life yet that was also taken one of the first things we want to do
10:26is determine you know who the father of that child is and where are they and what role does that person
10:31play in samantha's life we had a relationship based on six the thing about her job is that it put her in
10:40proximity to people who were often violent offenders my phone dinged and it said i got her i'm coming for you
10:52i just felt my heart drop through my stomach and i remember thinking who is screaming like that and then
11:05i realized it was me
11:1329 year old samantha dean who was pregnant with her first child has been shot to death in a deserted
11:20parking lot and police have no idea why statistically most victims know their killer so investigators with
11:28the bastrop police department need to find out who the father of samantha's baby is
11:34for that they go to samantha's parents but first investigators have to break the unimaginable news
11:41that their daughter has been murdered
11:45when they notified me i didn't quite understand what they were saying
11:51did i just not hear them correctly because it didn't register right away
11:56i go to work wednesday morning two ladies from our human resource office area they come in and they're
12:05asking me to come upstairs we go up to one of the conference rooms i see my husband and then i saw a lady
12:18and she had on the same kind of clothing that sam would wear as an advocate
12:26all i remember is her saying sam's name and then i remember hearing murdered and i remember
12:34hearing screaming and i remember thinking who is screaming like that and then i realized it was me
12:51they asked me if i knew who the father of samantha's baby was and i did not know
13:02as transparent as sammy was she didn't want to talk about the father the only thing that i did know that he was
13:14a police officer samantha may not have told her parents who the father of her baby was
13:22but investigators are hoping she confided in friends or co-workers
13:27detectives had me come to the special investigations unit at austin police department to ask me questions
13:37and i told them sometime in august she showed up to the door i let her in and as soon as she walked
13:44through the threshold of the door she just started sobbing and told me that she was pregnant
13:51and she said she was embarrassed to tell me um because i knew who the person was that she was
13:58pregnant by and it just immediately clicked for me that it had to be von tre clark because that's the
14:05only person we have in common i knew who it was i didn't have to ask it was von tre
14:14von tre clark is a 33 year old police officer at the austin police department
14:20he and samantha met six years earlier when they were both employed at a pharmaceutical company
14:26it started as a friendship with them and just spurred into a relationship they got along really well
14:35but it wasn't something that was out in the open either because he was dating someone else as well
14:43she was very clear that it was not the situation that she wanted
14:47but she had been a cancer survivor and after the radiation and chemo she didn't know she'd have
14:55the opportunity to be pregnant again and so she was going to keep it and knowing clark
15:04i just thought he doesn't want her to do this because his girlfriend is going to find out
15:09that information was passed on to bastrop county and that's initially what spurred bastrop county to
15:17bring voluntary in and you work for the city of austin how long you've been with a p almost three years
15:24first and foremost my condolences uh i know you told me a little bit on the phone that she was
15:28carrying your baby so my condolences but with that said tell me how long have you known her i've known
15:36sam for six years maybe seven years we used to work together at a different company we didn't have
15:42a relationship like we didn't hang out we didn't date or anything we had a relationship based on sex
15:47von trey had been living with uh another woman and for several years they had a child together
15:52and we're also raising another child that von trey had had previously with another woman when we got
15:57pregnant um she told me she was in love with me i didn't i was i wouldn't feel the same way we had
16:05an argument that at that point and kind of we stopped talking for a while and this happened the
16:10night before last can you remember what you were doing yeah probably 8 8 30 is probably about the time
16:16the kids go to bed so about 9 or so 9 30 i left because in my current relationship we're going through
16:24problems so i left um i went to the school that's we have a school right across the street chilled in
16:30my car walked around for a little bit and i ended up going to the uh police station what'd you do there
16:36i read a report about what time do you think you got there uh around 11 45. how long do you think
16:44you you guess you stayed there 30 minutes 30 minutes what'd you do after that i went home
16:50bastrop county detectives work on corroborating von trey's alibi they pull surveillance cameras
16:56and entry records from the austin pde south station sure enough cameras catch von trey arriving around
17:0312 11 a.m and leaving at 12 40 a.m but the hours between 9 p.m and midnight are completely unaccounted
17:12for investigators believe samantha was shot shortly after 10 p.m that's a pretty big window of
17:19time to be able to commit this crime since von trey is now connected to the investigation
17:25he is placed on paid administrative leave as standard procedure and when the press gets wind of the fact
17:31that a police officer might possibly be connected to samantha's case the story blows up tonight
17:38investigators are trying to figure out who murdered a member of the kyle police department she was an
17:43outstanding asset to our community her life was taken too soon this became a very intensely followed
17:54story in austin and to have a police officer now tied up in this huge investigation absolutely
18:02changed the scope of everything as media attention grows so does the pressure on law enforcement to solve
18:10the case by now investigators have been able to pull security footage from the valero gas station where
18:17samantha withdrew 100 at 9 36 p.m at the same time vuntrey clark said he was taking a walk in his
18:26neighborhood the surveillance video showed she came into the store by herself she goes directly to the
18:32atm makes the cash withdrawal and immediately leaves the store the surveillance video doesn't offer any
18:39additional clues but five days after the murder samantha's phone records are now back from the crime
18:45lab we started going through a lot of the phone records and really starting to put the pieces together
18:51the data shows that while samantha was traveling to bastrop from austin she received a text from an
18:57unknown phone number that was the very first time we could find that she's ever communicated with that
19:01number investigators need to know who does that number belong to while the bastrop sheriff's office
19:08follows that lead stephanie burgess samantha's friend and fellow victims advocate at austin pd
19:15gets a startling text my phone dinged and i looked at it and it was a number i didn't know
19:23and it said i got her i'm coming for you i'll show you what a crisis is
19:30and i just felt my heart drop through my stomach and i just started shaking oh my god is there some
19:42killer out there targeting victim services counselors
19:52just five days after samantha dean's murder her friend and fellow victims counselor stephanie burgess
19:58receives a threatening text stephanie doesn't recognize the number but the message seems clear
20:04whoever kills samantha is now after her that message came to stephanie's personal number we want to know
20:13who would have had that number and how the person said that message would have got it i felt so scared
20:20and the chief at the time called me and told me that i needed to go somewhere safe that was not my own
20:28apartment stephanie goes into hiding and the texas rangers join the case we were asked to join the
20:36case boston pd they wanted us involved so we could navigate those multiple jurisdictions the team of
20:41investigators now has to consider another motive for samantha's murder revenge the thing about her job
20:50is that it put her in proximity to people who were often violent offenders so was this in some way
20:59connected to her profession and law enforcement had she helped a victim of domestic violence flee a violent
21:08situation and was someone retaliating against her for that reason at this point investigators have two
21:16mysteries to solve who texted with samantha on the night of her murder and who sent the threatening
21:23text to stephanie five days later both texts were from different numbers but detectives have a hunch
21:30they're connected they start with the text that samantha received we obtained the point of purchase
21:36information from the cell service provider which indicated that phone was purchased at the walmart
21:42and stafford the morning of samantha's murder and then we obtained the time and date it was purchased
21:48from walmart and then obtained surveillance video of the person that purchased that phone
21:55we saw a black male wearing a houston cougars hoodie and gray sweatpants enter the walmart go to the
22:02phone section uh get the phone he then went to a register purchased the phone and then left the walmart
22:08in a white toyota car and we were able to obtain that license plate from the video as well the cars
22:14registered to a woman named kyla fisk so once we figured out who kyla fisk was we did a little research
22:20on her through social media and public databases of known associates saw she was in a relationship
22:26with a gentleman named kevin watson and kevin watson bears a striking resemblance to the man seen in the
22:32walmart video watson and kyla fisk both have prior arrests in houston for drug dealing they were on
22:41probation currently for a drug arrest they were selling narcotics so at this point we're trying to
22:46figure out how they're related to samantha do they know samantha in any kind of way and are they
22:52connected in any way to the marijuana found in samantha's car which detectives believe was placed in
22:58the vehicle after samantha was shot we definitely don't think she was out there to buy any drugs or
23:05do any kind of drug deal and when we see drug grips it's involving cocaine methamphetamine something that
23:10has a significant street value and that further solidified us as this being a setup with a drug
23:17angle officially off the table the team of investigators still needs to determine how or if samantha's
23:24connected to kevin watson and kyla fisk they take a look at the burner phone's call logs once the phone
23:31was activated there was two phone calls placed one was made to kyla fisk which was wasn't surprising to
23:36us kevin watson and kylan's their relationship together but the second phone call was to voluntary clark
23:44police are blindsided why is a known drug dealer in contact with a law enforcement officer
23:50investigators subpoena both watson and clark's personal phone records and what they discover
23:57is stunning hundreds of texts and calls between vantre clark and kevin watson over a period of years
24:06we learned that they were very very close with each other they had spent time playing basketball
24:11together went to school together a matter of fact kevin's mom thought of vantre like a son they
24:16referred to each other's brothers and they had a very close relationship despite the
24:20obvious connection between clark and watson investigators decide not to bring either
24:26man in for questioning at this time everything's being done behind the scenes we don't want anybody
24:30to know that we're on to them yet get their guard up investigators next turn their focus to the second
24:37phone the one that sent stephanie burgess the threatening text it was purchased at a walmart in katie texas
24:4540 minutes from where the first phone was purchased a couple of detectives from austin police department
24:51went down there and obtained the purchase receipt for that phone and also the surveillance video of
24:58the purchase of that phone from the photograph of the two individuals buying the phone that day that
25:04one of them for sure was kevin watson looked like he shaved his beard off but other than that you could
25:09tell it was kevin watson now that we know kevin watson's involved in buying the phone that sent
25:15stephanie burgess the threatening text message and he's bought the phone that was used in the murder
25:20of samantha we've now connected kevin to both of those offenses and what about the second man could he be
25:28involved in making the threat to stephanie the detectives need to identify him then as we're reviewing
25:35the records for the first burner phone the one that was communicating with samantha on the night of
25:39the murder we see that it's also communicating with a third burner phone we realized that it was
25:45activated in austin near clark's residence so we definitely believe von trey clark was in possession
25:50of that phone
25:58investigators in the murder of samantha dean have used geolocation data to place a burner phone in the
26:04hands of von trey clark but the mystery only deepens from there so after reviewing the records for the
26:11phone that von trey clark had we saw where he was communicating with a guy named freddie smith
26:17von trey was in contact with freddie several times up to the murder on that burner phone we're like here
26:23we go again we got another guy to run down look at research and see what his connection is and all this
26:29is and through that research investigators learned that freddie smith also has a burner phone they
26:35subpoena its records and discover that it too is communicating with clark and watson on the night
26:42of the murder and from the geolocation data each phone tracks from their individual residences
26:49to the same final location the deserted shopping mall in bastrop where samantha was shot to death
26:57everything fell into place what's more samantha dean's personal phone also travels from her home in
27:04austin to the parking lot in bastrop and she is not traveling alone the night of the murder of the
27:12burner phone that von trey had was geolocating off the same towers as samantha's phone
27:19which was uh indicative that he was in the car with samantha
27:23detectives feel confident that von trey clark kevin watson and freddie smith are all involved in
27:32some way with the murder of samantha dean but what they don't have is a smoking gun
27:39we've got a really good case on cell phones but obviously we know cell phones can't pull trigger and so
27:45we don't know who played what role in the murder at this point we're still at a point we're not ready
27:52to go uh do any interviews with any suspects we didn't want to spook them while the investigative
27:57team continues to gather evidence thousands of mourners line interstate 35 south as samantha's body
28:04is transported home from bastrop today we have the entire community of kyle that's come together here
28:11to celebrate samantha dean a police escort the body back to san antonio and people were over overpasses
28:23fire trucks police cars um people waving people crying literally in the thousands
28:31on february 13th kelvin and kimberly dean say their goodbyes to their daughter and their unborn
28:39granddaughter whom samantha had planned to name madeline there were people at a funeral that came
28:49that said that if it wasn't for her they wouldn't be here so um that's how i know that you know not
28:57only was she a great person but she went beyond the call she won't be remembered as a statistic she
29:04won't be thought of as kyle police department victim services coordinator whose life was taken
29:09she will be remembered as samantha dean friend and family
29:14samantha is buried with her daughter madeline rose dean while the father of her unborn child and his
29:22associates remain free investigators continue to peel back the complicated layers of samantha dean's case
29:31and soon they make another critical discovery the mysterious man who was with kevin watson on the day
29:38he purchased the phone that sent the threatening text to stephanie burgess has finally been identified
29:45his name is aaron williams and investigators traced the car he was driving to his in-laws
29:52once we identified aaron williams and started looking at his phone record you could see the
29:58communication with him and kevin watson on a pretty regular basis but they need more so investigators
30:04try a new approach they set up surveillance and a wiretack we did approve to go up on all the phones
30:11of von trey clark kevin watson freddie smith and aaron williams it's all happening live so you're
30:18listening to phone calls and seeing text messages as they happen the problem is no one is talking
30:26we realized early on that they're using gaming systems to communicate uh so at that point we kind
30:33of devised a plan to get a court order to interrupt von trey's internet service to force them off the
30:38gaming system and on to their phones so we can monitor that communications to get them talking
30:46investigators use a tactic called tickling the wire tickling the wire basically means we've got to have
30:52some kind of initiating event to get them to start talking about the crime so in this case that
30:56initiating event was for apd to go down there and talk to aaron williams's mother and father-in-law about
31:01why their car was in bastrop on february the 8th which we believe would spark a conversation to kevin
31:08aaron williams immediately calls kevin watson and says we need to meet we got to talk about
31:14something yeah from there it kind of kicked things off they've got kevin watson talking to some other
31:19people too about it it worked pretty well i got him talking but he still needs somebody to break
31:38look investigators in the murder of samantha dean catch a break while listening in on a wiretap of
31:45aaron williams and kevin watson in one conversation aaron anxiously tells kevin that they have to
31:51meet in person to discuss an important matter after that in-person meeting they later did talk on the
31:57phone about what kind of story they were going to give detectives if they came asking him about
32:02why he was in bastrop and then you learn a little bit about them from their conversations and it
32:10becomes pretty obvious that aaron williams is really no criminal and so ultimately that's who brent and i
32:17focused on the rangers agree it's time to start moving in they bring aaron williams in for questioning
32:26we quickly let him know that this is regards to a murder case and that's when aaron williams became
32:36very uncomfortable came very upset realizing that he had gotten himself into something that
32:42he probably shouldn't have but he still didn't want to give us any information the rangers are able to
32:48hit aaron williams with a charge called retaliation because he was present when kevin watson
32:55bought the phone that sent stephanie burgess the threatening text they hope a stint behind bars
33:01will give him time to consider his future and incentive to talk while aaron simmers in jail
33:08the surveillance finally pays off when rangers observe kevin watson showing up at freddie smith's house
33:17he's over there for a little while and they both get in the car and leave together
33:22and so we had a houston police department conduct a traffic stop on kevin watson and freddie smith after
33:29they left his house they found a fair amount of drugs in the vehicle they were both placed under
33:34arrest by houston police department for possession narcotics the pieces of the puzzle are falling into
33:40place but investigators still don't have enough to charge von trey clark with anything then a call comes in
33:48that changes everything we got a phone call from aaron williams attorney advising that he wished to now
33:58tell us what he knew did he tell you he went to bastrop that night
34:01yes or no yes what did he say happened who went with them and what happened um freddie went and
34:16it's all right aaron you're doing the right thing
34:18he told me they went and uh he told me that they killed the girl
34:28did he tell you who who actually pulled the trigger no he didn't tell me who you said that yeah
34:35they went out there and killed that girl
34:40aaron williams had told us about how fontre clark had gotten a girl pregnant in austin and she did not
34:45want to have an abortion and he didn't want her to have the baby and he needed this girl gone
34:50von trey was in a relationship so von trey did not want her to know about him getting samantha
34:55pregnant he was not going to be able to hide this any longer if she was going to seek child support
35:00and so kevin and freddie had been paid by von trey clark approximately five thousand dollars each to
35:04help von trey murder samantha dean the pressure is mounting with freddie smith and kevin watson behind
35:11bars and aaron williams singing like a bird it looks like they're closing in on von trey clark

38:15the black charge in the parking lot freddie smith got in the back seat i think she believed that
38:20he was jumping in to show the tablet and collect the money then freddie aims his gun at the back
38:26of samantha's head he attempted to shoot samantha but the gun malfunctioned and when it didn't go off
38:33he was able to hide it fast enough and tell her hey i forgot the charger to the tablet i gotta i gotta
38:38leave and go get it and that gave him time to go fix the malfunction in the firearm according to watson
38:45it takes several minutes for freddie to fix the jammed gun then kevin drops freddie back off at
38:51samantha's car where he slides into the back seat kevin drops him back off he tells me about how he was
39:00in the back seat and he shot it twice bam bam and then trey wanted a gun and then he handed trey the gun
39:08and trey was he said something crazy and then shot her once when you say that that's not crazy any any
