00:01A German court has sentenced a 61-year-old man to eight-and-a-half years in prison for repeatedly drugging his wife, sexually assaulting her and posting videos of the attacks online.
00:11The defendant, identified only as Fernando P., in accordance with German privacy laws, was found guilty in the western city of Aachen of serious rape, dangerous bodily harm and violation of personal privacy.
00:23Nicole Savatti is a lawyer representing the victim.
00:25I would first like to say that the court has dealt very sensitively with the proceedings and with the co-plaintiff.
00:32The co-plaintiff really had a voice in this proceeding.
00:34She was able to testify to express her feelings and everything that has burdened her.
00:40The case has drawn comparisons to the 2024 trial of Dominique Pellico in France.
00:45He was sentenced to 20 years for drugging, repeatedly raping his wife and inviting dozens of strangers to abuse her as she was unconscious.
00:52It led France to overhaul its rape law, with an explicit requirement for freely given and informed consent.
00:59Germany revised its rape law in 2016 to make it easier to prosecute assaults, but some activists say it still stopped short of a fully consent-based approach.
