00:00So the New South Wales government has already announced their intentions to reform gun restrictions
00:07here in New South Wales, as well as introducing legislation that would mean public assemblies
00:13aren't authorised in certain areas following terrorist attacks.
00:17Now today they've announced that they are going to outlaw the public display of terrorist
00:24and hateful symbols.
00:25Now this includes things specifically like the flags of Al-Qaeda, Islamic State, Boko Haram,
00:32Hamas and Hezbollah, among other designated terrorist organisations.
00:38In addition, they're going to further restrict what they declare to be hate speech.
00:45Now the Premier said that he will be ordering a committee to be formed to quickly investigate
00:51exactly what kind of terms would be classified under that legislation as hate speech specifically.
00:58But he did say that he personally would be insisting that the phrase globalise the intifada
01:04be declared as hate speech because he says it's proven to incite hatred.
01:11So here's a bit more of what the Premier had to say.
01:13We want to get legislation in before Christmas, but that's not going to be the end of the
01:17changes for New South Wales.
01:18It's too important.
01:19Right now it is too important not to look at everything we possibly can to ensure that
01:25the public is safe.
01:26If we can have very clear, bright red lines about what's appropriate and what's not,
01:32what the rules are in our civilised society, I think that's the best way of keeping the
01:36community safe.
01:37The Premier, Chris Minns, said explicitly that he thinks there should be a Royal Commission
01:43into Sunday's terrible terrorist attack at Bondi Beach.
01:47He says this is the most serious event to have happened in New South Wales in decades.
01:53He said if this isn't something you have a Royal Commission into, what do you use those
01:58Royal Commission powers for?
01:59He says that the government needs all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle so that they can adequately
02:05inform any future changes that are needed to protect people here in New South Wales and
02:12of course around Australia.
02:14Now the other thing that he announced today as well is more powers for police to compel
02:21people to remove face coverings.
02:23So they've announced that they're going to give police the power to require someone suspected
02:29of committing an offence during a public assembly to remove their face covering.
02:36Currently it's only the case if someone is arrested and detained or suspected of committing
02:42an indictable offence.
02:44So further strengthening those restrictions here in New South Wales.
02:49Now the Premier has recalled the Parliament on Monday.
02:53The government is still writing this legislation.
02:57They say that they're going to get it to the opposition as soon as they can because of
03:02course they seek to pass this legislation as urgently as possible.
