George RR Martin Reacts To Game Of Thrones Jaime and Cersei Scene. He explains the difference between his version in A Storm of Swords and what the show did.
Transcript
00:00Sunday night's episode of Game of Thrones had one of the most disturbing scenes ever,
00:04and GOT author George R.R. Martin is responding to the backlash.
00:07Now, the scene in which Jaime forces himself on his sister-slash-lover Cersei while their
00:12dead son lie right next to him left fans super upset.
00:16It's not right!
00:17I don't care.
00:18Part of the outrage comes from the fact that the scene plays out so differently in the book.
00:22Where Cersei and Jaime have consensual sex, it makes the TV rape scene so unnecessary.
00:27Martin attempts to explain why producers and the director chose to go in that direction,
00:31writing, the whole dynamic between the characters is different in the show.
00:35Martin writes, in the book, Jaime is not present at Joffrey's death.
00:38And then suddenly, Jaime is there before her.
00:40Though the time and place is wildly inappropriate, and Cersei is fearful of discovery, she is
00:45as hungry for him as he is for her.
00:48Stop it!
00:49Stop it!
00:51But in the show, Martin points out that Jaime has been around for weeks, and the two are
00:54often fighting.
00:55Why have the gods made me love a hateful woman?
00:59He writes, the setting is the same, but neither character is in the same place as in the books,
01:03which may be why they played the scene out differently.
01:06He also suggests if fans could hear the character's thoughts in the scenes as they do in the books,
01:11then it might have left a somewhat different impression.
01:13But don't get it confused, the scene was still meant to leave us feeling very uncomfortable.
01:18I mean, it is his sister, after all, and their dead son was lying right there.
01:22He was awesome.
01:24That's all kinds of creep.
01:26Martin writes, this scene was always intended to be disturbing, but I do regret if it has
01:30disturbed people for the wrong reasons.
01:32I'm Brian Corsetti.
