A chemical spill at a fish and chip shop in Tasmania has caused a school and local residents to be briefly evacuated. Authorities are now working to clean up the formic acid and determine exactly what caused the spill.

00:00I'm standing here in Georgetown in northern Tasmania where authorities behind me are working
00:07to contain a spill of formic acid at a local fish and chip shop. Now we don't yet know
00:13how this acid was spilt but we have been told about 900 litres so quite a significant amount
00:19was spilt but no one was injured. Authorities were very quick to react setting up a one
00:25kilometre exclusion zone and even the local school was briefly evacuated. That exclusion
00:31zone has now dropped back to 100 metres and quite a lot of people are gathered here with us
00:36at the boundary of that zone. We have just seen the EPA drive past and we understand they
00:42may have given permission for some of that acid to be flushed away into the stormwater drain
00:47but we're awaiting further details about that and also about exactly how this acid was spilt.
00:55So I want to make sure that people are dropping back to the sea but the leadership is
01:02slowly moving every Friday. So you can see here in the U.S. and the airway
01:05that we've looked at at the sea. We've got a sea. We're going to be the same
