00:00Come on, are we going to pack them?
00:03Today is his last day with his owners.
00:08He's never gone off with anybody else, has he? No.
00:13He needs to find a new home.
00:16A traumatic day for us both. Definitely.
00:20It's not his fault.
00:23It's not his owner's fault either.
00:28Saying goodbye to a pet is not easy.
00:31But don't worry, this is a happy story.
00:36About good boys and girls who need somewhere else to live.
00:43And an amazing place.
00:48Come on then, beautiful boy.
00:50That wants to stop them ending up in the doghouse.
00:53Oh.
00:55By finding them a new forever home.
00:57Here she is.
01:00So join us as these national treasures.
01:04Good boy.
01:06Learn to love again.
01:08He's all yours.
01:09Really?
01:10Really.
01:11We are just, besides self, we're happiness really.
01:13It really touches you.
01:15It touches your heart.
01:16Bring the tissues.
01:18We were wondering if you would like to go forward with adoption today.
01:21Yes.
01:22Yes, we would.
01:23Yes, please.
01:24Yes.
01:25Because there will be happy cries.
01:27Hi, girls.
01:28We're doing it for the right reasons.
01:31Yes.
01:32Really.
01:33Really.
01:34For somebody else to give them the love that they deserve.
01:38We'll be in touch with you very soon then, okay?
01:39Bye.
01:40Bye.
01:41Bye.
01:42When an owner makes a decision that they can no longer care for their dog, it's probably
01:43one of the most difficult decisions that someone needs to make.
01:45In those situations, the empathy you have is the Gerry Green Dog Rescue Centre.
01:49Staffed by a team of dog-loving experts, it helps find perfect forever homes for beloved
01:56pets whose owners have had to say goodbye.
01:59We'll be in touch with you very soon then, okay?
02:02Bye.
02:03When an owner makes a decision that they can no longer care for their dog, it's probably
02:08one of the most difficult decisions that someone needs to make.
02:12In those situations, the empathy you have for the person making that decision, it's incredible.
02:21Every year, over 100,000 dogs have to be rehomed in the UK.
02:27Thousands of dogs were bought during the COVID pandemic.
02:31But now, many owners are struggling to look after them, putting more and more pressure on
02:36dog charities to find new ways to deal with the number of new dogs.
02:41We do receive a very large number of calls or emails or people reaching out to us.
02:48And then they've got their dog who they want to do the absolute best thing for, that they
02:54need to find somewhere safe for them to go.
02:56And a lot of the time the dogs can be left in very difficult situations.
03:00To make that process as easy as possible for the owner and dog, the charity have devised a bespoke
03:06service called Home From Home that allows the dog to move directly from its previous owner
03:12to its new home without the distress of a stay in kennels.
03:16It just means that the dog or dogs are comfortable in their current situation while they're going
03:22through the stressful process of meeting new people and building new attachments and new bonds.
03:28Today, the centre's help is needed by three-year-old Bertie, a sprightly Jack Russell Norfolk Terrier cross.
03:42Come on, sweetie pie. Ding, ding time. Oops. There you go. There it is.
03:49Bertie lives with Chris and Pauline.
03:55But the couple's deteriorating health means they can no longer keep up with Bertie's energetic needs.
04:01Drop it. There we go. Oh. Oh.
04:08This is full of energy and I think now we're not fit enough to walk as far as we used to.
04:16And again. Drop it. Drop it.
04:18We feel a bit tired. If we were ten years younger, we would want him.
04:25Good boy. Do you want me to do it?
04:27Daddy do it for a bit. There you go.
04:29Because we love him as much as we do, we've got to do what's right for him because it would be selfish for us
04:36for him to turn into a lazy, fat, old Jack Russell, if you like.
04:44And we thought, that's not right. You know, that's wrong.
04:51Dog handler Kim has come to assess Bertie's requirements to help him find a new home.
04:57Hello. Hello. Hello.
04:59I'm Kim. Hello, Kim.
05:00Is this Bertie?
05:01It is.
05:02Hello, little man. Come on in.
05:03Thank you, man. Thank you.
05:04Come on in.
05:05In an assessment, what we're looking for is how the dog responds to certain stimuli.
05:11Hello, little man.
05:12This is Kim.
05:13Oh, she's got a toy dog.
05:14Whether that is strangers.
05:16When you take them for a walk, it's seeing how they respond to cars going by.
05:20What I'm trying to find out is, ultimately, what home is going to be the best home for this dog.
05:26So, how are you guys finding it day to day, then?
05:30Tiring.
05:31Tiring.
05:32Yeah.
05:33He's good long walks.
05:34Yeah.
05:35But when the little boys were here, the little great-grandchildren.
05:38He played all day outside with the two boys.
05:40Oh, bless it.
05:41That's it.
05:42I mean, it's absolutely gorgeous.
05:45Crack a little ladder, yeah.
05:47We wouldn't, obviously, have another dog.
05:50No, it's been a hard decision.
05:56Coming in.
05:57We'll be back soon.
05:59A quick stroll gives Kim a good indication of Bertie's physical needs.
06:04Coming in.
06:06And how he reacts to others outside the home.
06:09Good.
06:10Bertie's doing really well on his walk.
06:13Walking past a member of the public.
06:14He's not too worried about people.
06:16And what I have seen is a few times he has got frustrated because he can't get to another dog
06:22and that has gone to a little bit of a grumble that I can feel just through the lead.
06:26For that reason, I would say that Bertie needs to be an only dog in her home.
06:31Go steady.
06:33Good boy.
06:37Come on in.
06:39Let's go.
06:42To make the moving process easier for Bertie, he'll get to stay with Chris and Pauline until the charity finds his forever family.
06:51When the day comes, it will be extremely heartbreaking.
06:54Saying goodbye to a pet is not easy.
06:57Yeah.
06:58Yeah.
06:59Yeah.
07:00Yeah.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Back at the rescue centre, Kim wastes no time putting the wheels in motion on Bertie's adoption.
07:17Uploading an irresistible set of photos and crafting the perfect pet profile.
07:24Hello there.
07:25I'm Bertie Bear, but you can call me Bertie.
07:28I'm a playful character on the lookout for someone who loves playing fetch just as much as me.
07:33I am a young and active lad, so I need plenty of exercise.
07:41See you soon.
07:42See you soon.
07:43Love from Bertie.
07:45And there he is on the website.
07:48Ready?
07:4912 million dogs live in UK households, but over half of all dog owners have made no plans for who would care for their dogs if they were to become seriously ill or pass away.
08:09It means that the staff at the Nottinghamshire Dog Centre are constantly busy.
08:15Good morning. Best speaking. How can I help?
08:18We really urge people to have a plan in place, whatever that may be, where the dog goes to a rescue or a family friend who is happy to take on that dog.
08:27We just urge people to really think about, as difficult as it may be, what will happen with that dog if the unfortunate happens.
08:35We'll be in touch very soon.
08:39OK, thank you. Bye.
08:42We've had a really urgent phone call from someone needing to rehome a nine-month-old Staffy Cross.
08:48The puppy is called Archie, and while he might be young, he's already had a very eventful life.
08:55You can have biscuits after you've had your sandwiches.
08:58Archie's currently being looked after by 31-year-old Leanne, but his owner is actually her mum.
09:06He is my mum's dog, but with her being in hospital, I've been the main carer and looking after him.
09:13There we go, taking it in.
09:15Hey, Archie, you're going to follow him now.
09:18I've got two dogs myself, so it's kind of like a really big overload of two kids, two adults and three dogs.
09:26Archie!
09:27Archie's came for me!
09:31Nine-month-old Archie was adopted by Leanne's mum, Denise, when he was just eight weeks old, after a neighbour was no longer able to look after him.
09:40Don't let him get it, cos he's the last one.
09:43Hey, Archie.
09:44My mum saw a photo of him and she just fell in love with him and she was like,
09:47yes, I'll have him, I'll rehome him.
09:50At the time, she lived on her own and she just wanted a bit of companionship.
09:55And who's Archie with?
09:56Me.
09:57With you, ain't he?
09:58Yeah.
09:59Look how small he was compared to now.
10:01Yeah.
10:02She enjoyed walking him, it got her out, brightened up my mum.
10:08But just two months later, while Leanne happened to be visiting, the family's world was turned upside down.
10:19Archie came and woke me up about six o'clock and I thought that was very strange.
10:24He was a bit all over the place, as if something was wrong.
10:27And he brought me straight downstairs, it was like he was trying to get me to follow him.
10:32And then I found my mum collapsed on the sofa.
10:36She had meningitis in her brain and it really took a toll on her body.
10:42And that's him missing Nanny when she was in hospital.
10:45Mummy let him on Nanny's bed.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Yeah.
10:49And if it wasn't for Archie waking me up, we might have lost her.
10:58Now her mum's back home, but is unlikely to make a full recovery.
11:02With two kids and her own two dogs to look after, on top of working part time, Leanne and her mum have come to the heartbreaking decision to re-home this bundle of fun.
11:15The first step towards getting Archie adopted is a visit from the rescue centre's deputy manager, Beth.
11:25Hello Archie.
11:26Oh, hi Archie.
11:27This is Archie.
11:28Hello gorgeous.
11:29Hello.
11:30Hey, tell me about the way darling.
11:33I know, it's exciting.
11:35To ensure poor Archie gets a home that's perfect for him, Beth needs to see for herself how strong his new owners will need to be.
11:46If it's okay with you, I think what we'll do next is I'll take him out for a little walk, is that alright?
11:50Yep, that's fine.
11:51Fab.
11:52Are you ready?
11:53Come on then boy.
11:54Are you excited?
11:55Oh you are.
11:56You are.
11:57Let's go.
11:58Good boy.
11:59This way.
12:00Am I styling it out like I'm not even being pulled?
12:13I'm just gliding with him.
12:16He doesn't really seem keen on going back yet.
12:21He wants to keep going.
12:22He's not going to want just short walks.
12:24He's going to want to be in an active home that's doing a lot with him.
12:33Good lad.
12:34Sometimes dogs come in to us because the circumstances of their owners have changed and life sometimes just does change.
12:41There's not always a way to be able to control that.
12:44It's not usually and it never really is the owner's fault.
12:47The owner hasn't done anything wrong.
12:49Things just change.
12:51You are gorgeous aren't you?
12:56Back at the rescue centre, Beth gets the ball rolling with Archie's online profile.
13:01I think Archie's write up might be all finished so I'll give it a little read.
13:06Hello.
13:07My name is Archie.
13:08I am looking for an adventure partner.
13:10I absolutely love to go out and about.
13:12But when I'm not exploring I'm very much described as a cuddle bug.
13:16Sometimes I do forget I'm a big boy but I promise I only squish you with love and kindness.
13:21If you are looking for a lovable, cuddly doofus then I could just be the boy for you.
13:26Hopefully everybody will fall in love with him.
13:30We've just got to make sure we find him the absolute perfect place to go where he'll be just as loved as he is at the moment.
13:36A few days later...
13:53You'll be excited to get out.
13:55Hi mister!
13:57..and Leanne's brought Archie to the dog centre as he has a very important date.
14:02Shall we take you in?
14:03Shall we have a fun day?
14:04Yes.
14:05Lauren and the team think they might have found him a new family.
14:09Come on Archie!
14:10Good boy!
14:11Let's go!
14:15Married couple Neil and Wendy...
14:18Hiya.
14:19Hiya, you alright?
14:20Yeah, how are you?
14:21It's Neil and Wendy.
14:22We're here to see Archie.
14:23Lovely.
14:24..are looking for a new dog after losing their own beloved pet Rocky, 11 months ago.
14:29Apart from Neil, it was the love of my life.
14:32He's left a hole, hasn't he?
14:34Yeah.
14:35He'll be alright now, won't he?
14:36Yeah, of course he is.
14:37He is up there.
14:38He's up there.
14:39He's up there.
14:40He's up there.
14:41He's up there.
14:43The couple are hoping Archie could bring new companionship into their lives.
14:54There we go.
14:55While Lauren takes Neil and Wendy to the centre's meet and match area, Amanda collects the
15:01mutt of the moment.
15:02Archie.
15:05This way.
15:09I hope my first interaction with Archie will be the best ever.
15:13I want him to love me, just like Rocky did.
15:18Even you didn't take this long.
15:20What?
15:21What?
15:22I haven't got married.
15:23I know.
15:25Come, come.
15:31Are you ready?
15:33Hello.
15:36Hi.
15:37Hello Archie.
15:38Hi.
15:39Hi.
15:40You're beautiful.
15:41There we go.
15:42He's found the toys already.
15:43You're beautiful.
15:44Oh, you're absolutely gorgeous.
15:47So what I'll do is I'll just let him off lead, then he can relax a little bit.
15:51Hello.
15:52And let him decide what he wants to do, just get used to the environment.
15:56Oh, he's gorgeous.
15:58Absolutely gorgeous.
16:00What's this?
16:01Ready?
16:02One, two, three, go.
16:04Come on.
16:06Neil and Wendy certainly seem smitten, but at this centre, it's the dog who gets to make the
16:12final decision.
16:13It's nice that he keeps taking the toy back to them.
16:15Yeah.
16:16Walk on this.
16:18Did he take it?
16:19He took it.
16:21Ready?
16:22One, two, three, go.
16:24Oh, there we go.
16:25Neil and Wendy have formed an instant bond with Archie, and will be invited back for a second
16:30date.
16:31We'll do another meet, and then we'll start seeing them interact a bit more, and gaining
16:36that confidence around each other.
16:38Ready?
16:39Catch.
16:40Jack Russell Cross Bertie is having to leave his current home because his boundless energy
16:54is too physically demanding for his elderly owners.
17:02Luckily, the rescue centre think they've found potential adopters that better suit his
17:07needs.
17:10Young couple, Eden and Ross.
17:12Hiya.
17:13Will you see Bertie?
17:14Lovely.
17:15If you want to take a seat, and Kim will win you shortly.
17:16All right.
17:20We're about to move into our first house together that we've just recently bought.
17:26We're trying to build in the timeline to get a dog in that as well.
17:29Like, oh, pack a box, adopt a dog.
17:31Like, get the sofa in.
17:32Like, just...
17:33Do more research into dogs than we have so far.
17:35Oh, yeah, definitely.
17:36Definitely.
17:37Hi there.
17:38Do you want to follow me through?
17:39This way.
17:41Take a seat.
17:42So, what experience do you have with dogs?
17:48Well, my family's always had dogs.
17:50Is it larger dogs, smaller dogs?
17:52Sort of a mix, really.
17:54We haven't ever had really small dogs, per se.
17:57They've normally been, like, mid-sized.
17:59My family, I've got two sausage dogs, so I do quite like, like, medium-sized dogs,
18:03but kind of open to any fairy friend, really.
18:08It's weirder to not have a dog than to have a dog.
18:11Some weekends, we'll go, what shall we do?
18:13What shall we do?
18:14Let's go to the beach, shall we go see all the dogs?
18:15Yeah.
18:16It's like, we purposely go to places where we can keep dogs.
18:21Come on.
18:26Let's go.
18:28This is an important first meeting for all involved.
18:31And after learning Eden and Ross haven't owned small dogs before,
18:35the staff can only hope Bertie will win them over.
18:39This way.
18:41Can you see him?
18:42No.
18:43I can't.
18:44I think he's coming out of it.
18:45This way.
18:46Good boy.
18:50Hello.
18:51Hello.
18:53Hello.
18:54Hi.
18:55Hello.
18:56I'll just take him off lead and let him have a little wander around.
18:58Yeah, yeah.
18:59Good boy.
19:00He's a little man, bless him.
19:01What toy does he like?
19:03Any toys.
19:04Any toys.
19:05He does really like tennis balls.
19:07Yeah.
19:08Right.
19:09Okay.
19:10Ready.
19:11Ready.
19:12Go.
19:13Yeah.
19:14All we know is how to play fair.
19:15If you're happy, we will leave you to it.
19:16Yeah.
19:17And you can spend some time with him by yourself.
19:18Yeah.
19:19Yeah.
19:20Fantastic.
19:21We'll see you soon.
19:22Come on then.
19:23Do you want one of these?
19:24What's this?
19:25Oh, what's that?
19:26Pretty.
19:27Come on.
19:28Come on.
19:29I want to give you some love.
19:30He's not bothered, is he?
19:31No.
19:32Every dog is different when it comes to me and Match.
19:49Some dogs are a little bit more reserved and everything's new.
19:53New people, new environment, new smells in particular with dogs.
19:57That's a big thing and it can be quite overwhelming for them.
20:01It's okay.
20:02Right, shall we grab a toy and see if he wants to play?
20:06Who's that?
20:07Come on then.
20:08Come on then.
20:10Ready?
20:11Go on.
20:13He likes them teddies, doesn't he?
20:16Bertie seems to be enjoying his new toys more than his new friends.
20:20Whoa, whoa, whoa.
20:23It might take some getting used to for Ross and Eden.
20:31There's obviously they're having to sort of make that compromise almost, aren't they?
20:34With like, him having experience and having larger breeds.
20:37She's got experience with smaller breeds.
20:40That's compromise.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Bertie.
20:43Shall we go see how they are getting on?
20:46Yeah.
20:47Yeah.
20:48Fantastic.
20:49Bertie.
20:50Come on then.
20:51Have a little seat.
20:52So how are you both feeling about your decision with Bertie?
20:55I don't know.
20:56I think because obviously we're very new to him, so it's not kind of getting the whole like,
21:00I want to be your best friend.
21:01Yeah.
21:02So.
21:03Yeah, it's a lot to think about.
21:04Yeah.
21:05It's very important that it is the right match.
21:07That's why we have the meet and match process for adoptions.
21:11It has to be the right home for the dog.
21:13Tick all the dog's boxes, but it also has to tick the people's boxes, the adopters.
21:17Because the last thing we want is for it not working out on the dog coming back.
21:22I know it's obviously your first meeting with him.
21:25I think we will leave you guys to go home, have a think about it, have a chat,
21:28and then just get back to us when you've got a decision.
21:30Yeah.
21:31Perfect.
21:32Yeah.
21:33Let's go.
21:34It would be silly not to kind of look at other dogs that might also fit our kind of
21:40wants and needs for a dog, because they would be quite foolish just kind of rushing
21:45to the first dog that we meet and see.
21:47There's been a huge growth in the number of dog owners in the UK, with the vast majority
22:00of them buying their pets as puppies.
22:03But at the Nottinghamshire Dog Centre, the staff are convinced of the benefits of adopting older dogs.
22:09Rescue has an awful lot of pros for people to go down the rescue route.
22:14You have the meet and match process where you can get to know the dog over a couple of days.
22:18You don't just meet them the once, and you can see them in lots of different scenarios.
22:22We medically check all of the dogs, and then that dog has support from the rescue
22:26for the rest of their life, no matter what you may need.
22:29We are always here.
22:33Three-year-old Bertie is in desperate need of a new home,
22:36because his elderly owners cannot keep up with his energetic nature.
22:41This way.
22:42Good boy.
22:43The rescue centre thought they'd found him the perfect match with young couple Eden and Ross.
22:48Hello, Bertie.
22:49Hello.
22:51Hi.
22:52Not bothered, is he?
22:53No.
22:54But sadly, the pair has decided Bertie isn't the one for them.
22:58OK.
22:59It's devastating, because you've put so much time and energy into what you thought would
23:06be this dog's potential forever family.
23:09And yet, it doesn't always work out like that.
23:12And it's gutting because you ultimately want what's best for the dog.
23:17So if it's not going to work, you're not going to force it.
23:18With the clock ticking, the team have managed to hook Bertie up with another date.
23:27All right.
23:28Come along.
23:29Indeed.
23:30This time with active dog and motorbike lovers, Chris and Jenny.
23:35Hello.
23:36Hello.
23:37We've come to see Bertie.
23:38Lovely.
23:39If you want to go and take a seat over there and song with you shortly.
23:40All right.
23:41Thank you very much.
23:43Well, we've had a dog for almost all of our married life, haven't we?
23:46Yeah.
23:47And we now miss the companionship.
23:49We miss the exercise that was given morning and night.
23:55Having lost our Jack Russell last year, six months later, our son at 51 died suddenly.
24:05It was not foreseen in any way, and so you can imagine how it floors you at that point.
24:12It's bad enough when, with the dog, but that just added the grief even further.
24:21We got to the point where it was a job to get off the chair to go out.
24:26And we realised that maybe a dog now would probably ease us back into a little more normality.
24:35And the little dog will make us smile.
24:37Yes, he will.
24:38Yeah, he will.
24:39Hi there.
24:41Is it Chris and Jenny?
24:42It is, yes.
24:43Do you want to follow me through?
24:44Lovely, thank you.
24:53Bertie's previous date was unsuccessful.
24:56There you go.
24:57So staff have picked this couple due to their experience with smaller dogs.
25:02Good boy.
25:05The time is nigh.
25:06Yes.
25:07Come on.
25:10There's he.
25:11Oh, wow.
25:12You are cute.
25:16Just let him have a sniff, get familiar again with the environment.
25:22Hello Bertie.
25:24I'll give you a toy.
25:26Yeah, yeah.
25:27Yeah, yeah.
25:30Wow.
25:31Well done Bertie.
25:34Yeah, so if you guys are happy then, we'll step out and give you some time on your own with Bertie.
25:38Okay.
25:39Yeah.
25:41Can you wait there mate?
25:42Aww.
25:43It's not long before Bertie is back to his old tricks, ignoring his visitors.
25:48How are you feeling about it?
25:50Very good.
25:51We're friendly people.
25:53We like Jack Russells.
25:55He sounds very similar to their last dog as well, which is great for anxieties.
26:03Bertie.
26:06Oh dear.
26:07I'd quite like to see him interacting with them a bit more.
26:11It's always stressful for the dog.
26:13You've got to factor in that this is a new environment for him.
26:15There is a lot going on as well as a new person or persons.
26:20Come on Bertie.
26:21I think maybe they are just being hands off, being cautious.
26:24Yeah, which is sometimes what we like.
26:26Absolutely.
26:27Come on Bertie.
26:29Obviously until he feels confident and comfortable enough with you then obviously he'll bring his toy to initiate play.
26:34No, I'm not a happy bunny.
26:36No.
26:38Chris and Jenny really seem to have fallen for this cute little fella.
26:43Oh, you've got a gorgeous face.
26:46But in order to move in with the couple, Bertie needs to like them too.
26:50Bertie.
26:52He's very focused on us.
26:53Oh.
26:55Go away.
26:56Bring my friends back.
26:58And if Bertie fails to connect with Chris and Jenny, he could struggle to find another match.
27:06Hello.
27:07Hi buddy.
27:08I'm just, I'm a bit worried that he's, he's not really giving you much.
27:12If you play with the toys, if you throw them around, try and get that engagement with him.
27:20Good boy.
27:22Come on.
27:23We don't want it.
27:24No.
27:25Oh.
27:26Really?
27:27Good boy.
27:28Whoa.
27:29After a somewhat shaky start, Bertie is beginning to warm up.
27:42Good boy.
27:43We're friends now, aren't we?
27:44We are, yes.
27:45So are you feeling quite happy?
27:46Very happy, thank you.
27:47Yes, yes.
27:48Yes.
27:49Very happy.
27:50A bit of Jack Russell, aren't you?
27:51Full of it.
27:52So would you like to arrange to come back and meet him again?
27:53Yes.
27:54Very much so, please.
27:55Yeah.
27:56I would love to.
27:57Oh, come on.
27:58Bertie.
27:59The second meet and match is a very important part of the meet and match process.
28:12That's because everybody's had a chance to go home, have a think about it.
28:16So if they've come back for a second meet, they're obviously interested in the dog.
28:20We're looking forward to seeing Bertie again.
28:22Yes.
28:23I hope he remembers that I can throw a ball and that he'll say, I know you.
28:28Fingers crossed.
28:29Yeah.
28:30It's just over a week since Archie met with Staffordshire Bulldog enthusiasts Neil and Wendy.
28:49No!
28:50Archie won their hearts.
28:51Oh!
28:52All right.
28:53Ready?
28:54So these would-be adopters are back and determined to woo this precious pooch.
29:02It's all about Archie.
29:03Yes.
29:04There's no guarantees so we don't know until we meet him again really, do we?
29:17We're so determined to get him today, aren't we?
29:21If today doesn't go according to plan, I'll be distraught. I'll be distraught if he doesn't pick us.
29:27He will.
29:28Hi guys!
29:29Hey!
29:30Nice to see you again.
29:31Same here.
29:32Yeah, cool.
29:33Yes please.
29:34Cheers.
29:35It's a nerve-wracking day for both Archie and for the rescue centre staff.
29:40This playful pup desperately needs a new home and new owners with the time and experience to train and exercise him.
29:51Come on, this way Archie.
29:56Hey.
29:57Here's Archie.
29:58Goodbye.
29:59Hey.
30:00Hiya.
30:01There you go buddy.
30:02Off you go.
30:05If we just sort of leave him to it for however long he needs just to sort of decompress.
30:09Lovely thanks.
30:10And then we'll go through some training bits if that's all right with you.
30:11Yeah.
30:12That'd be great.
30:14That'd be lovely.
30:15Archie.
30:17That's yours.
30:18Go on then.
30:20Good lad.
30:21Sit.
30:22Sit.
30:23Just sort of one thing to mention there.
30:25I don't know whether you sort of noticed he refused to sit.
30:27So he's just sort of feeling a little bit uncomfortable with that kind of interaction right now.
30:32Right.
30:33Is he just as you remembered?
30:34Yeah.
30:35He is.
30:36He is.
30:37Definitely.
30:38No.
30:39You're not allowed to come on.
30:41It's important not to overwhelm him.
30:43So I don't know whether you're noticing as well he's kind of sort of coming in for a quick
30:47interaction and then sort of moving himself away again.
30:50If you meet a person for the first time you're not instantly giving them hugs and you know
30:54going for drinks and stuff.
30:55He's trying to suss us out.
30:56Yeah exactly.
30:57It is pretty amazing how just giving the family a couple of tips when they're interacting with their dog can make a huge difference.
31:06Hiya.
31:07Good lad.
31:08There we go.
31:09Oh boy.
31:10So he is coming to you now so when you do go out to stroke him if you go under rather than
31:18up the top.
31:19Okay right yeah.
31:20There's something called the three second rule as well.
31:23So if you fuss them for three seconds and they stick with you that's okay to keep going.
31:27Right.
31:28But if they sort of move away after three seconds that's sort of their cue to say I'm done with
31:33this.
31:34It was quite obvious that Archie felt a lot more comfortable and that you know they were
31:38reading his body language signals.
31:39So it really did work for them.
31:41Hey.
31:42Yeah.
31:43So if you go in for a stroke remember go underneath.
31:46Yeah this way.
31:47And also three second rule.
31:48So he's sticking around.
31:49He's not moving away.
31:50Oh wow.
31:51He's comfortable with this interaction.
31:52Yeah.
31:53Yeah.
31:54Erm.
31:55Little tail wag there.
31:56You came up.
31:57Well done.
31:58Yeah.
31:59And the kisses.
32:03Cool.
32:04It looks like Archie has found his forever home.
32:07But while Neil and Wendy may have found themselves a new forever friend.
32:18Good lad.
32:20Archie now has to say one last goodbye to Leanne.
32:27Today is the day that you are handing him over to us.
32:30So basically all that's going to happen is there's a little bit of paperwork for you to
32:35sign and then you will say your goodbyes to him and then we'll take him from you.
32:41Absolutely.
32:42So is that all right with you?
32:43Yeah that's fine.
32:44That's lovely.
32:45I understand it's difficult.
32:46It's got to be so hard.
32:47You rest assured that he's going to a lovely home.
32:50Yeah.
32:51Is there any questions that you've got or anything more to ask?
32:53I know you've answered everything I'd have asked anyway.
32:56And obviously you know if you do want any support or anything like that from us in the future
33:01or if you want any updates of how he's getting on.
33:03I would like updates.
33:04Yeah.
33:05Definitely.
33:06Any time you want to message us or give us a call more than welcome.
33:10It's okay.
33:11So if it's okay I'll give you a few minutes just to spend a bit of time with him.
33:14Is that all right?
33:15Yeah.
33:16Lovely.
33:17It was really hard watching her get so emotional.
33:28I mean I even got a bit choked up and I do this every day.
33:33You're going to get to a good home again.
33:36You're going to have lots of fun and walks.
33:41And you're going to be loved so much.
33:44Just let me and mommy love you.
33:49He's been such a big part of her life for so long.
33:54Hey.
33:57It's always hard when an owner's got to give up their dog for situations out of their hands.
34:03All right.
34:04We'll speak to you soon.
34:05All right.
34:06Yeah.
34:07Come on Arch.
34:08Come on.
34:09No.
34:14She can be sort of rest assured that he's going into a loving home.
34:19And she can have that weight lifted off of her shoulders as well.
34:26With Archie now signed over to the rescue centre.
34:29Amanda and Lauren have a very important question for would-be owners Neil and Wendy.
34:35We've definitely seen the difference between him last time and this time.
34:40He's completely different.
34:41Yeah.
34:42Is that good?
34:43Yeah.
34:44Yeah.
34:45It's really good.
34:46Really, really good.
34:47We were wondering if you feel positive and happy if you would like to go forward with adoption
34:52today.
34:53Yes.
34:54Yes we would.
34:55Yes please.
34:56Explode.
34:57I think he's going to be thoroughly spoiled.
35:03He is.
35:04Oh yes.
35:05The highlight of this job is finding the dog a new home.
35:12Do you want it?
35:13Do you want it?
35:14Do you like red?
35:15And the best home that they can possibly find as well.
35:19There you go.
35:20Fantastic.
35:22Thank you so much.
35:23Absolutely thank you so much.
35:24Thank you very much.
35:25It's such a rewarding time actually watching those dogs walk out of the door.
35:41There's no other feeling.
35:42Thank you very much.
35:43See you.
35:44He's so adorable.
35:46He's so gentle.
35:47He's just what we want.
35:49I could just burst and scream and shout.
35:52Yeah.
35:53I think it went absolutely brilliant.
35:54Yeah.
35:55Yeah.
36:06Bertie.
36:07Chris and Pauline are having to give up three-year-old Bertie because they're no longer physically
36:12fit enough to look after him.
36:14Good boy.
36:16Look at this lot.
36:17Are we going to pack them?
36:18So much so that today is likely to be the last time that he sees his current owners,
36:19Chris and Pauline.
36:20Very tough day.
36:21Yeah.
36:22Very tough day.
36:23Yeah.
36:24Very tough.
36:25No sleep last night, but.
36:26No.
36:27No.
36:28Not a lot of sleep last night.
36:29At all.
36:30At all.
36:31As Chris and Pauline aren't in great health, Kim has come over from the rescue centre to
36:32the rescue centre.
36:33It's a great day.
36:34It's a great day.
36:35It's a great day.
36:36It's a great day.
36:37It's a great day.
36:38It's a great day.
36:39It's a great day.
36:40It's a great day.
36:41It's a great day.
36:42It's a great day.
36:43It's a great day.
36:44It's a great day.
36:45It's a great day.
36:46Yeah.
36:47Very tough day.
36:48No sleep last night, but.
36:49No.
36:50Not a lot of sleep last night.
36:51At all.
36:52As Chris and Pauline aren't in great health, Kim has come over from the rescue centre to
37:00collect Bertie from them.
37:01He's never gone off with anybody else, has he?
37:02No.
37:03No.
37:04No.
37:05No.
37:06A traumatic day for us both.
37:07Definitely.
37:08Eh?
37:13Hello.
37:14Hello.
37:15You all right?
37:16Hi Bertie.
37:17Come on in.
37:18Here you come.
37:19Nice to see you again.
37:20Hello darling.
37:21Hello.
37:22How are you?
37:23So today is obviously going to be goodbye.
37:27I have potentially found someone who could be a really good match for Bertie.
37:31Oh, say thank you Kim.
37:34Oh bless him.
37:35Yes, I think we're all prepared.
37:37It'll be a very empty house.
37:40Yes.
37:43Where did he sleep last night then?
37:45On the bed.
37:46Yeah.
37:47Where he always sleeps.
37:48Yeah.
37:49He curls up.
37:50Don't you?
37:51He likes to hold somebody's hand.
37:53Oh.
37:54To go to sleep.
37:55Don't you?
37:56Eh?
37:57Very precious.
37:58I've packed all his food and toys.
38:01Okay.
38:02But I mean, whoever.
38:03There's little things like that that will, that's his routine that will make the transition
38:08so much easier.
38:09Yeah.
38:10It is really sad.
38:11It's such a difficult thing to do because we know it's best for Bertie and obviously Pauline
38:18and Chris have made that responsible decision, but it's going to be hard for Bertie, it's
38:23going to be hard for us, but especially it's going to be hard for Pauline and Chris.
38:28Come here.
38:29Come here.
38:30There's a good boy.
38:31There we are.
38:32We're all ready for our journey.
38:34There we go.
38:35Kiss, kiss.
38:36Mwah.
38:37Saying goodbye to a pet is not easy.
38:40Yeah.
38:41We've survived before.
38:43Yeah.
38:44Come on.
38:45Come with Kimmy.
38:46Say bye, Daddy.
38:47Say bye, Daddy.
38:49Say bye, Daddy quickly.
38:50Come on, darling.
38:51In you come.
38:52Oh.
38:53Love you, darling.
38:54It's sort of every cloud has a silver lining because although this part is the difficult
39:07part, we do know that on the other side, he could potentially be finding his forever
39:12home.
39:13So that's a positive ending for Bertie, but it doesn't make this bit any easier.
39:18Bye, sweetie.
39:19Oh, look at his face.
39:22He says, oh, I can smell all the doggies.
39:25Oh, bless him.
39:26Okay, sweetie.
39:27Dogs aren't always rehomed because they're bad dogs.
39:30No.
39:31All the people are bad people.
39:32It's circumstances.
39:34And in the long run, it all boils down to one thing, what's best for the dog.
39:39Thank you ever so much.
39:40Bye.
39:41We'll just wave you off.
39:45All right.
39:47We'll be in touch if you want any updates.
39:49Yes, we will.
39:50Yes.
39:51Okay.
39:52There we go.
39:53After you.
39:55And after you.
39:56Oh, thank you.
39:57Oh, thank you.
39:58At the dog centre, Chris and Jenny are back.
40:02Here we are again.
40:03And keen to meet Bertie again.
40:04I've got to say hello.
40:05Ready?
40:06Come on then.
40:07Good boy.
40:08Who's this?
40:09Hi there.
40:10Hi there.
40:11Hello.
40:12Hello.
40:13Hey.
40:14Okay.
40:15Do you want to follow me?
40:16Yep.
40:17I've got to go.
40:18At the far end of the centre is a large play paddock, perfect for a second date.
40:23Who's there?
40:24Oh, yes.
40:25Hello.
40:26So the reason we've come down to the paddock is this is the first time Bertie's been in
40:30the paddock.
40:31Oh, right.
40:32So I'm hoping when he's clipped off late, he can just have a little sniff sort of decompress
40:36a bit.
40:37Yes.
40:38And then you guys can have a wander round with him and explore this area.
40:54Lovely.
40:55Yes, I know.
40:56Oh.
40:57They definitely know their terriers.
41:00Yeah.
41:01You can tell that they've had a Jack Russell before as well.
41:05Yeah.
41:06They know their quirky personalities.
41:08That's it.
41:09And they really love him for it.
41:10Yeah.
41:11Good boy.
41:12Haha.
41:15Their faces beam when they're around him as well.
41:18And I think, compared to yesterday, I had a little bit of worries that they wasn't
41:22quite getting up on the feet and engaging with him.
41:24Yeah, of course.
41:25They're doing that now.
41:26And forming that relationship, you can see the difference.
41:29Good boy.
41:31Let's go.
41:33We're really pleased with how things have gone.
41:37If you guys are happy, we're more than happy.
41:39We're happy.
41:40Would you like to adopt him?
41:42It would indeed.
41:43Yes.
41:44Yeah, would you?
41:45Yes as well.
41:46Is that a yes?
41:48Bertie has finally found a new home.
41:53Re-homing is a great gift for any dog.
41:56And I can assure you that I know what re-homing means.
42:00I was adopted at 10 months old.
42:02And I have always been, and always will be, extremely grateful to my new mum and dad for
42:08providing me with a loving, caring home.
42:11After a bit of paperwork, Bertie is officially adopted.
42:14And he, Chris and Jenny can start their new life together.
42:19We think he's a very good match for us.
42:21And we're so pleased that Gerry Green is going to trust us to look after him.
42:25It's the heart of a new adventure.
42:27Well, well.
42:29Thank you very much.
42:30Have a happy life together.
42:31We will.
42:33When the time comes for the dog to go to its new home, it's quite an emotional time.
42:39We are absolutely over the moon that this dog has found its forever home.
42:44And that's why we do this job.
42:46We don't do it for any other reason than that heartfelt moment when we actually see the
42:53dogs going off and leaving us behind.
42:56It's lovely.
42:58Bye-bye.
43:00Bye.
43:01Bye.
43:02Bye-bye.
43:10Bye.
43:15Bye-bye.
43:16Bye-bye.
