Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Western claims about preparing for a major war with Russia as “a lie” and “pure nonsense” during an annual meeting of the Russian Defence Ministry in Moscow.

Putin accused NATO countries of fuelling hysteria in Europe by exaggerating threats from Russia, while continuing to modernise and expand their offensive military capabilities, including weapons in outer space. He said Russia has consistently sought diplomatic solutions to conflicts and blamed the West for abandoning those opportunities.
The Russian leader reiterated Moscow’s position on equal and mutually beneficial cooperation with the United States and European countries, while also warning that Russia would pursue its territorial claims in Ukraine by military means if peace talks fail.
