00:00Well, not really, but obviously I love a chopper.
00:03Yes.
00:03And I just wonder why, my God, I wonder what that is supposed to have in it.
00:08It shows a lot of promise, but that's a step too far.
00:12Shows a lot of work.
00:17I'm Henry Cole.
00:18That is comfy.
00:20And along with fellow fanatic Fuzz Townsend.
00:23That's a magnificent pair of choppers up there.
00:25We're back on the hunt for vintage treasures in the nation's sheds.
00:30Look at this.
00:31We're going to buy them, fix them.
00:33That is fantastic.
00:35And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:38Welcome to Shed and Buried.
00:44We're on our way to Dave in Burton.
00:48Dave, it seems, has rather a lot of motorcycles.
00:54Okay, so is he one of these people who collects them, but also buys a few extras to supplement his hobby so that he can afford to do it?
01:09He is one of these geezers who imports container loads of motorcycles from America.
01:16What's interesting is that he seems to have quite a lot of British stuff as well as Japanese.
01:21So he's kind of repatriated British bikes.
01:25Yeah.
01:25That's not a bad idea really.
01:27And he said to me, you've got a few European bikes.
01:31Excellent.
01:32So there's a few electrical problems right there.
01:34Ha ha ha.
01:35Whether we come back with a Brit bike, a Japanese bike, or a European head-scratcher, who knows?
01:42But Burton, here we come.
01:45In there, I know you have a collection of motorcycles.
01:49Tell me how you came about them.
01:51Kind of worked in the motorcycle industry for years from when I was 16.
01:54And then back 2015, got a H2 Kawasaki, you know, the 750 triple two-stroke.
02:00Local guy was buying some bits.
02:02We got talking and he said, do you fancy getting back into it?
02:04And it was like, no, not really.
02:05Because it takes over your life.
02:06Of course it does.
02:07As you know.
02:08When it's a bug.
02:09It's an addiction.
02:10Yeah, yeah.
02:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:11That's it.
02:12If it's in your blood, it's there.
02:13Yeah, you have it.
02:13That's it.
02:14You're over.
02:15And you'll never have any money.
02:16So you succumbed.
02:16Yeah, unfortunately, yeah.
02:17And I ended up buying like a container load of motorbikes from America.
02:21So have you sort of like snaffled a few along the way for your own collection?
02:25Oh, yeah.
02:25But you sort of like, you know, you trade a little bit as well.
02:28Yeah, well, yeah.
02:29Because I mean, like, you have to.
02:31Because just sell one to buy another one.
02:33Because you never have any money.
02:34Because this all goes in the petrol tank.
02:35No, understood.
02:36And tyres and chains and batteries and all the stuff.
02:39So when we go in there, is everything for sale?
02:42Nearly.
02:43Nearly.
02:43There's one or two.
02:44There's always a nearly.
02:45Are we talking like 95%?
02:47I'd say kind of 97%.
02:4997%.
02:50That's good.
02:51100%.
02:51Thereabouts.
02:52Dave, look, we'll have a little rummage about.
02:54Cool.
02:54We'll call you in on a few things with a little bit more info.
02:57And then at the end of it, hopefully, we'll have a haggle.
03:00Excellent.
03:00Sounds cool.
03:01Great.
03:01Well, I'll get in there.
03:02All right.
03:03See you, Dave.
03:03See you later.
03:04Come on.
03:07Now, look, we've got to keep jiggling.
03:08Right.
03:09We've got to, oh, because of the cold, mate.
03:13Yeah, right.
03:13Shall I reveal the goodness underneath?
03:18There we are.
03:18Right, OK.
03:19You can stop moving for a minute.
03:20OK, so underneath there is the elixir that's called a gold wing.
03:27The Honda gold wing is a legendary sports tourer.
03:31Introduced in 1974, it's still in production today.
03:35Fully fed models are huge, but this one is lean and mean.
03:39So we've got a nice, naked gold wing.
03:43Yeah.
03:44Now, I like that very much about this, because gold wings I don't normally go for.
03:49Yeah.
03:50But this, they're like one-bedroom flats on wheels.
03:53Well, that's right.
03:54But this looks a little bit more stripped down, so therefore, I don't know, it just appeals
03:59a bit more.
04:00Could scrub up nicely.
04:01But I'll tell you what I really do like is that Kawasaki Z Classic right here.
04:06Now then, again, quintessentially American.
04:09Yes.
04:09With Kawasaki trying to emulate anything to do with Harley or whatever.
04:13Yeah.
04:14With those high-rise bars, which I love, mate.
04:16I don't know about you.
04:17I'm not a fan of the high-rise bar.
04:19I do like them a bit flatter.
04:21I like eight-hangers like that.
04:22Flatter and wider.
04:23I know, but you are kind of Californian spirited.
04:26Well, I am.
04:27You're absolutely right.
04:28Can you get your leg over?
04:29I can get my leg over, yeah.
04:30Just see if it just, is it the compressors there?
04:34Yeah.
04:35Okay.
04:35All right.
04:35Yeah, there's a bit of compression.
04:37Yeah, nice.
04:37All right.
04:38Well, so look, straight away, there's a couple of interesting possibilities there.
04:42Bars I would change, but...
04:44No, no.
04:44That's got a whole American bar.
04:46Well, you might be right.
04:47Okay.
04:48Come on.
04:53Next door, there's a military-spec Matchless that's suffered a defeat.
04:57I think we've got a bit of a hydraulic lock in there.
05:01But otherwise, nothing exceptional.
05:03Keep going.
05:04Keep going, sir.
05:06It does get better, though.
05:08Isn't it nice to have decent things in stables rather than horses?
05:11Yeah, well, at least they don't bother eating while they're sitting in here doing nothing.
05:17Okay, so look.
05:19Well, I'm going to say one thing in here.
05:21La Verda 750 SP.
05:23Is it SP or SF?
05:23It's an SF, mate.
05:25Yeah.
05:26La Verda was a small North Italian company
05:28which specialised in big sports tourers.
05:32The SF stood for super franny or powerful brakes.
05:36Personally, for me, I would stay away from Italian stuff having been in a place like this.
05:43Yes.
05:43Just purely because of the electrics and all that kind of stuff.
05:46It's funny you're saying that about Italian bikes suffering a little bit in the cold,
05:50in the shed kind of thing.
05:51Well, damn, more so.
05:52It's a bit like Italian cars.
05:54I mean, you know, but with Italian cars, not only do the electrics suffer,
05:58but they rot away in front of your eyes.
06:00Absolutely.
06:01So, look, I'd just be wary of that.
06:02I mean, obviously, if you were going to take that away to restore it,
06:06fabulous, go for it.
06:07It looks like a fantastic project.
06:09But for us, we want to do a quick, nice little urn.
06:11Yeah, I think this is the boulevard of broken dreams this year.
06:14Oh, yeah, there's a song about that, isn't there?
06:15Yeah.
06:15After you, sir.
06:19Come on.
06:20Oh, yeah, sir.
06:20There you go.
06:22There's another pen full of Japanese bikes.
06:25We've got quite a few two-strokes, haven't we?
06:27And nearby, a more interesting-looking Triumph.
06:31Time to bring back Dave.
06:33Now, is that a 500?
06:34This one, yes.
06:35Yeah.
06:35And it looks all up and together.
06:38Matching numbers.
06:39And it's got compression.
06:40Yeah.
06:43JH16026.
06:43JH16026.
06:49Introduced in 1967, the Daytona was a sporty Triumph,
06:54named after the famous racetrack.
06:56Having a vintage bike where the engine number matches the frame number
07:00always adds to the value.
07:03I do love the high-rise American bars.
07:06Okay, yeah.
07:07Do you know what I mean?
07:08Yeah, yeah.
07:08A lot of people say, oh, no, I have standard flat ones.
07:10Not at all.
07:11I like standard flat ones.
07:12I know you do, man.
07:13I know.
07:14You've got that on your Norton, haven't you?
07:16Yeah, yeah.
07:16Your nice flat bars.
07:17That's right.
07:18But, anyway, hey, look, I love that.
07:21It's a nice bike.
07:21Yeah.
07:22Hey, that's fantastic.
07:23Why don't you have a look around here,
07:24and then we'll come and grab you.
07:26Yeah, there's an interesting police bike in there.
07:28Oh, right, I'll go and have a look.
07:29All right, mate.
07:29Hey, Joe, see you later.
07:30Take care.
07:31Thanks, bud.
07:31All right.
07:32Let's go here.
07:32Here we go.
07:34Officer of the law.
07:35All right.
07:38In the 1970s, Kawasaki tried to take over from Harley as the standard US police bike.
07:45This one's got all the trimmings, but looks a bit grungy.
07:49Do you know, I think it would quite suit you.
07:52Why?
07:53Well, you know, I think get your little police helmet out and get on your Kawasaki.
07:59Look, the part, I think.
08:01It is quite fun.
08:01I'll tell you what, though.
08:02I just got this feeling that that might need a lot of work.
08:06Hang on.
08:06What's under here?
08:08Oh, wait a minute.
08:11Oh, okay, man.
08:13That's some meat and potatoes, is it?
08:15Yeah.
08:15That is a Rocket Gold Star.
08:18Those flat bars there, that's when I love flat bars.
08:21Yes.
08:21You know?
08:22Cool, that's a possibility.
08:23I like it.
08:24The other thing about it is it does have a British registration number.
08:28Oh, right, it's going to be telephone numbers.
08:30Okay, so look, right, we've got that police bike, that Daytona out there.
08:35Yeah, I like that.
08:36I like that.
08:37There's a late entry in there.
08:38A late entry?
08:39Yeah.
08:40And then the Kawasaki Zed Thao Classic by the door and the Gold Wing at the right price.
08:45Shall we go and enquire?
08:47Shall we enquire?
08:48Let's enquire, squire.
08:49Okay, squire, enquire.
08:50Enquire.
08:55So, look, can we just get a sighting lap, yeah?
08:58Just on prices, just to see where we are.
09:00Everything's expensive.
09:02Yeah, well, I'm sure it is, dear boy.
09:03Can we come down a little bit from there?
09:05Terrible concern.
09:06Well, we start there and then we, you know, do the haggle down.
09:09Okay, so look, let's just start through the door there.
09:12You've got yourself a Gold Wing.
09:13So that shouldn't be too much work.
09:15That's going to be battery and carbs.
09:16Yeah, right.
09:16And that should go.
09:17Yeah.
09:18How much is that?
09:19I can do that 27-ish.
09:21Okay, now the Kawasaki next to it.
09:23Again, 27.
09:24Everything at the moment seems to be round about the 27 mark.
09:26Everything's 2,700 pounds.
09:28Not everything, yeah, but, yeah.
09:30Or it's starting at 2,700 pounds.
09:32Dave, so there's a Laverda there as well, the Silver Laverda SF.
09:36Ah, probably close to four grand on that.
09:39Yeah, okay.
09:40There is a Triumph Daytona with Ape Hanger bars.
09:44Yeah.
09:44Yeah, a red one.
09:45Nice bike.
09:46Nice looking bike.
09:47Does that, it's...
09:48It's going to need work.
09:50I mean, similar sort of money, 27-ish, which is cheap for what it is.
09:55You've got a police bike.
09:57Tell me about that.
09:58I bought it from a guy in New York.
10:01It's got a Mark II engine, 28 mil carbs.
10:03Can I guess how much it is?
10:05Yeah, go on, have a guess.
10:062,700?
10:07Oh, 2,750.
10:09Oh.
10:10Would you be in the market 2,400 on the Daytona?
10:16Probably not.
10:17Okay.
10:18What else would you...
10:20Would you do 2,500 on the Daytona?
10:25Where was I on it?
10:2627.
10:26I'd do you 26.
10:29I see the glove came off then.
10:30Yeah.
10:31Is the glove going back on?
10:32Back on again.
10:32We're up in Burton with Dave and his barn full of bikes.
10:51We've offered two and a half grand for a Triumph Daytona, but Dave ain't having it.
10:57Well, what was that?
10:58You were 2,500 when I was 26.
11:00Well, that's 2,550, isn't it?
11:02Yeah, I think it should.
11:03So, that's the Daytona.
11:04Okay.
11:04Fantastic.
11:05Oh, hang on.
11:06Your bangles come off us.
11:08Hey, that's bad news.
11:09He may die at any moment.
11:10Oh, no.
11:12Hey, Dave, well, thank you.
11:13Right, 2,550.
11:14On the Daytona.
11:15All right.
11:16Okay, that's a fair deal.
11:16That's cool, yeah.
11:17Great stuff.
11:23Next day, we reveal all to Allen and Skid.
11:28Now, don't say that Fuzz and I don't look after you, okay?
11:35Because I know you're going to be in raptures.
11:38I do like these.
11:39Daytonas are lovely bikes.
11:41It's nice and original as well.
11:42It's not seen the road since 1982, apparently.
11:44Well, I can say it.
11:45Is that it?
11:45Yeah.
11:45Really?
11:46Yeah.
11:46Oh, okay.
11:47I have noticed quite a bit of disconnected wiring.
11:49Yes.
11:50Oh, dear.
11:50The bottom line is that I think it was the best of quite a large bunch of stuff that I think
11:56needed a lot of work doing to it.
11:57That's right, do you know what I mean?
11:58Okay.
11:59And I thought, well, we've got a complete motorcycle just about.
12:02Yes.
12:02And I also think these are eminently saleable.
12:05They are.
12:06Okay, so look, there is quite a lot to do to this, right?
12:08It's kind of tinkering stuff, though.
12:10Is it?
12:10Hopefully it's not major.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Okay.
12:12All right, well, we'll get her in the shed and give her a go, shall we?
12:14Yeah, definitely.
12:14Yeah, nice.
12:18In it goes, and we fit a battery to check if it runs.
12:22Ready?
12:23Yeah.
12:24Ignition, light, light!
12:26And even the speed of light works.
12:27Everything works!
12:28It's a runner!
12:29Can I just say, that is a revelation.
12:31Yeah.
12:31Well, we've got something.
12:32We've got lights working straight away.
12:33We've got lights working straight away.
12:35That is unheard of.
12:36Did the back light work?
12:37Fuzz and skid fit proper terminals for the battery, and Alan does some pre-emptive points
12:43cleaning.
12:44It's going to go.
12:45And plug checking.
12:47Oh, massive spark.
12:48I'm very excited.
12:49This is going to go, you know.
12:50Yeah, no, I'm excited as well.
12:51Have you seen the choke count?
12:52I'm excited.
12:53I'm always really excited to ride British bikes.
12:58You get on one and go, oh, this is lovely.
13:00You get on another one.
13:00It's absolutely awful.
13:02Yeah, yeah.
13:02And then, after Fuzz squirts on some easy start, Alan gives it a kick.
13:09Yes!
13:11But we get nowhere.
13:13My excitement is slightly waning.
13:16Alan does a running repair on the choke cable, and they swap the plugs and give the points
13:21another file.
13:22But even when Fuzz gives the kick start a bit of GBH, nutter.
13:28No.
13:29I think we should try it on the rolling road.
13:32Everyone goes outside to try it on the roller starter.
13:39But one of the two cylinders isn't working.
13:46There's no suction on this side.
13:48No.
13:49Got compression issues.
13:51Alan heads home, leaving Fuzz and Guy to take off the carburettors.
13:57Could they be the problem?
13:58There's nothing obvious.
13:59So far, we don't have any blockages.
14:07Fuzz kicks again, but there's still only one cylinder running.
14:10I think we've got a deeper issue.
14:14Yeah.
14:15Potentially, potentially a stuck valve or partially stuck valve.
14:20Skid then takes a look at the top of the engine and spots something.
14:24Mate, there's no adjuster in the rocker arm.
14:27Wow.
14:28Okay, so...
14:29Oh, it's snapped off.
14:31There's no way of adjusting that.
14:32There you go.
14:35Yeah, so that's what it should have.
14:36It should have the nut and the little post in there.
14:38Yeah.
14:39So there is no way of doing that.
14:41So has it actually snapped off?
14:43I don't know.
14:45When Fuzz takes off the other cover, it's just as bad.
14:48That's not good.
14:51That's not very good, Skid.
14:53Something's jammed in there.
14:54I think he's fired this up without locking them off, and they've all come out.
14:58The actual adjuster has been jamming against here.
15:02What we definitely need to do, Skid, is remove the rocker covers and check that this has all
15:09been assembled correctly.
15:18Next day, Alan and Skid remove the rocker to check if anything has fallen in.
15:25The one good thing about this, Alan, is these are fairly straightforward, aren't they?
15:29They're designed to take apart the side of the road.
15:30Yeah.
15:32With three spanners and a screwdriver.
15:35Eventually, they get the cover off.
15:37Well, so far, so good, Al.
15:40The rocker doesn't look damaged.
15:42The pushrod's up, Ben.
15:43Right, but where's the bit?
15:46Off it comes, Al.
15:47Happy fishing.
15:48Here's the nut.
15:49Can you get it?
15:50Yeah, here's the nut, look.
15:52So will it fit on?
15:55Yes.
15:56So, Al, we've retrieved the front nut, and it fits.
16:00It's not damaged, so that's a result.
16:02But we are missing the back one, and that is truly worrying.
16:06We've found one missing element, but what about the other?
16:10That looks in good condition, Al.
16:11It's not chewed up in there.
16:13No, I'm wondering.
16:14If he didn't put it in?
16:15Yeah.
16:16It looks like we need to order a spare.
16:19When the part comes, it's a very quick job to fit it.
16:24So, in a way, that's the result, because we can put this back together and fit the adjuster
16:29and lock nut once we've got it.
16:31It's a shame we had to disassemble all the rocker covers to find out that bit isn't in
16:37the engine.
16:37So, let's get cleaning, and then we can get the bike back together.
16:39Fantastic.
16:45Two days later, the new adjusting screw arrives.
16:49All I've got to do now is fit this in the rocker arm.
16:52It's all been put back together, and it's ready to assemble.
16:55However, I have put tape round the rocker arm, so hopefully I do not drop this back inside
17:02the engine.
17:02Stage one, Skid fits the new screw.
17:07Here we go.
17:08Stage two, he uses the adjuster to tune the valves, which allow fuel and air in, and exhaust
17:15gases out.
17:17Right, so that's set, and then just double-check that it's got the movement.
17:20You can hear that little tick.
17:21That means it's not tight.
17:22It has got movement.
17:24So, that's that one done.
17:26Just the caps have got to go back on, but I have got the other side to do.
17:32In the afternoon, Alan turns up.
17:37He and Skid fit a new choke lever and some new rubbers, and then, after a bit of spit
17:42and polish, it's ready to emerge from the shed.
17:48It does look lovely, doesn't it?
17:50Shined up really nice, hasn't it?
17:51Hasn't it just?
17:53So, does it run?
17:56This is the key.
17:57Now, I can't possibly kick it, because I have a damaged leg.
17:59I'm out of breath.
18:01I'm almost out of breath, but I'll give it a go.
18:02Yeah, go on then.
18:03Come on, Al.
18:03Well done, Al.
18:04This is marvellous.
18:05Petrol on.
18:05Okay, petrol on.
18:06Tickle.
18:07Tickly-wickly.
18:08Shall I put the ignition on?
18:10I'll give it some choke as well, just to make sure.
18:11Now we've got a new choke lever.
18:12Ignition on.
18:13Yeah, now you've got a choke lever.
18:15Right, ready?
18:15It's going to go first time, Al.
18:18There, I told you.
18:19Kick back.
18:19Oh, ready?
18:23That's it.
18:24Alan, this is remarkable.
18:37Well, it started out, it's blowing a little bit of exhaust here and there, but, I mean...
18:40I just love the smell.
18:41Yeah.
18:42Generally.
18:42It's nice and smooth.
18:43Mate, so, that is fantastic.
18:44Felt really smooth.
18:46Well, we'll take for a test drive.
18:49I think it's over to you, sir.
18:50And we're off.
18:54It's still pretty smoky, but it's great to get it back up and running.
19:00I can't take her on the normal road.
19:03She's obviously American-regged.
19:06But, just need to get a dating certificate and apply, and you should get registration pretty
19:11easily.
19:11The Daytona was developed for the US market, with twin cobs, for a sportier performance.
19:2217,000 were built, but they're pretty rare today.
19:27Now, am I right, as I was riding, when I was turning it round at the bottom...
19:33You couldn't breathe.
19:34Yeah, there was quite a lot of smuke.
19:35But it rides fine, apart from that.
19:37So, basically, we've got to sell it as a rolling resto, basically.
19:40Absolutely.
19:41I think I might have a few punters for this, actually.
19:44Well, you bought it at a sensible price, so you've not got to ask silly money for it.
19:48All right.
19:49Okay.
19:49Oh, look at my phone book.
19:50Oh!
19:54Next morning, Jack arrives.
19:56He's a lot younger than the bike, but keen to get into motorcycling.
20:00Now, listen, all right?
20:04There are issues, Jack.
20:06Like any Triumph of that age, it needs fettling a little bit.
20:13But that is reflected in the price.
20:15So, it just smokes like, well, like Guy and I used to.
20:20Yeah, yeah.
20:22But do you like it?
20:24I do.
20:24Do you like the Apehanger bars?
20:25I do.
20:25I think they're beautiful.
20:26Give it a service.
20:28That'll be a sweet little bike.
20:29Yeah.
20:31Three grand.
20:34Two five.
20:35No, that's too low.
20:37No, we can't go to that.
20:38Now, there's no way we can come back with a counteroffer, but make it your final one.
20:44Do you like it?
20:45It's a classic.
20:46Two eight.
20:47Shake hands.
20:48Yeah?
20:49Yeah, that's a deal.
20:50Nice.
20:51Just about.
20:51There we go, son.
20:52And just ride it carefully.
20:54Keep it sunny side up.
20:56Off you.
20:56Off you.
20:57Great, great, great.
21:01Yeah, so, look, two eight.
21:02Is that quite good?
21:03Yeah.
21:03You paid two five fifty.
21:05Fifty quid's worth of tappets and inspection cap.
21:08So, two hundred quid profit?
21:09Yeah.
21:10And really, we haven't had to do a huge amount.
21:12No, it's needed tinkering.
21:13Yeah.
21:13But that's what we do anyway.
21:15That's what we enjoyed.
21:16Yes.
21:16Or you did while I was out.
21:17Yeah, well, I enjoyed it.
21:19I think Al did as well.
21:20Hey, look, if we can earn two hundred quid a day, I mean, that would just be fantastic,
21:25wouldn't it?
21:25It would.
21:25That would be, every day would be a nice little earner.
21:31I'm loving it, Skid.
21:32Next.
