Malawian fruit wine brewing sweet success at home and abroad
Transcript
00:00Business has been booming for Linga Fine Foods and Winery, which makes a unique range of
00:12wines made out of several fruits other than grapes.
00:17The small batch winery was started by this couple Timothy and Margaret Nguira.
00:23They spotted a promising niche in the craving for wines infused with a vibrant character
00:28of locally grown fruit, each bottle rooted in the flavors of their own landscape.
00:33So it was a hobby from 1978, and then we went to Namibia for six years, and when we came
00:39back in 2002, Tim was just saying, look at these strawberries, these farmers, they have
00:44no market.
00:45Let's see what we can do with the wine and start.
00:49So the motivation was very much to find a market for this huge, beautiful fruit that we have
00:54in Malawi, and there's no value addition.
00:57Through their business, the winery has created a steady market for small older fruit farmers
01:02and job opportunities for young graduates.
01:05There they learn about the fermentation process as well as wine aging and food safety.
01:13Fruits such as white guava, strawberries and hibiscus are used to produce a more balanced,
01:18less sweet profile, an approach that has quickly gained favor among local customers.
01:24We are using seven different fruits, and the founder decided to use these fruits because
01:31they're not commonly used by Malawians.
01:34So he decided to add the value and to get the market from small farmers so that they can
01:40find something to do.
01:42For now, the winery continues to grow, with its bottles stocked in most international food
01:48stores across Malawi and appearing on select outlets in the United Kingdom, earning the
01:53country much-needed export earnings.
