As you mentioned, David Shiraz was declared bankrupt here in the Federal Court in Perth
00:07
earlier this morning. And while Mr Shiraz wasn't present for the proceedings today,
00:12
former Senator Linda Reynolds was represented by her lawyer, Martin Bennett, and his team.
00:17
This morning's hearing comes after Mr Shiraz's wife, Brittany Higgins, was declared bankrupt
00:23
last week in the Federal Court in a hearing brought on by former Senator Ms Reynolds,
00:28
with Federal Court Justice Michael Futrell ruling there that her estate would be sequestrated
00:34
under the Bankruptcy Act. Back in August, Ms Higgins and Mr Shiraz were both found
00:40
to have defamed the former Senator in a series of social media posts. Today, the court heard
00:45
David Shiraz's estate would be sequestrated under the Bankruptcy Act with costs of $5,690 to be paid.
00:54
Now, the act of bankruptcy was dated to October 31st, and the court heard that Mr Shiraz was
01:01
personally served the bankruptcy notice at a Melbourne cafe back in October.
01:05
And Linda Reynolds' lawyer spoke outside court today. What did he say about the matter?
01:11
That's right, Joe. Martin Bennett spoke to media outside. He's been representing Linda Reynolds
01:16
across these bankruptcy proceedings against Mr Shiraz and Ms Higgins. He told media outside that today
01:23
was a consequence of Mr Shiraz defaming his client. Here's a little of what he had to say.
01:30
Mr Shiraz, you'll recall, when he withdrew from defending the Supreme Court action before Justice
01:36
Tuttle had his barrister to tell the court that he wasn't going to buy a ticket on the Titanic.
01:41
Perhaps he couldn't afford a ticket on the Titanic, but he certainly goes down with the ship.
01:46
It's important to note Mr Bennett said there's still a chapter left in these proceedings.
01:52
He described it a saga, with Ms Reynolds suing the Commonwealth and the law firm that acted
01:58
on its behalf, HWL Ebsworth. He said it will play out at some stage in the federal court.
02:04
Here's a couple of Landshirt. He said it will be manifested to its idea.
02:18
So this is the law firm in dla Work.
02:23
And this is the law firm between the Christian and the Latin Frankenstein
02:27
to get to know the
