Brittany Higgins’s husband David Sharaz has been declared bankrupt in the federal court in Perth, two months after former senator Linda Reynolds served him bankruptcy papers.

00:00As you mentioned, David Shiraz was declared bankrupt here in the Federal Court in Perth
00:07earlier this morning. And while Mr Shiraz wasn't present for the proceedings today,
00:12former Senator Linda Reynolds was represented by her lawyer, Martin Bennett, and his team.
00:17This morning's hearing comes after Mr Shiraz's wife, Brittany Higgins, was declared bankrupt
00:23last week in the Federal Court in a hearing brought on by former Senator Ms Reynolds,
00:28with Federal Court Justice Michael Futrell ruling there that her estate would be sequestrated
00:34under the Bankruptcy Act. Back in August, Ms Higgins and Mr Shiraz were both found
00:40to have defamed the former Senator in a series of social media posts. Today, the court heard
00:45David Shiraz's estate would be sequestrated under the Bankruptcy Act with costs of $5,690 to be paid.
00:54Now, the act of bankruptcy was dated to October 31st, and the court heard that Mr Shiraz was
01:01personally served the bankruptcy notice at a Melbourne cafe back in October.
01:05And Linda Reynolds' lawyer spoke outside court today. What did he say about the matter?
01:11That's right, Joe. Martin Bennett spoke to media outside. He's been representing Linda Reynolds
01:16across these bankruptcy proceedings against Mr Shiraz and Ms Higgins. He told media outside that today
01:23was a consequence of Mr Shiraz defaming his client. Here's a little of what he had to say.
01:30Mr Shiraz, you'll recall, when he withdrew from defending the Supreme Court action before Justice
01:36Tuttle had his barrister to tell the court that he wasn't going to buy a ticket on the Titanic.
01:41Perhaps he couldn't afford a ticket on the Titanic, but he certainly goes down with the ship.
01:46It's important to note Mr Bennett said there's still a chapter left in these proceedings.
01:52He described it a saga, with Ms Reynolds suing the Commonwealth and the law firm that acted
01:58on its behalf, HWL Ebsworth. He said it will play out at some stage in the federal court.
