00:00Gorgeous. Sorry, I don't want to talk to you.
00:01No, I'm just kidding.
00:03Hi, Cody.
00:04I've got zero compliments on my outfit.
00:06Oh, my gosh.
00:10I'm so excited. You look stunning.
00:12Oh, my gosh.
00:13But, yes, we chatted on the phone a few weeks ago.
00:16You are so, so wonderful.
00:17All right, amazing.
00:19Hey, Hollywood Life.
00:20We are here with Cody Johnson and his stunning fiancée.
00:24Oh, sorry, wife.
00:26Wife, 10 years.
00:27No, I knew that.
00:28She's put up with my sorry tale for 10 years.
00:30Obviously, and you have, like, millions of beautiful love songs all about her.
00:34Like, that must be pretty cool.
00:35It's nice to have inspiration.
00:38On my way to you, huge, huge, huge, huge hit.
00:41And now you are going to be opening for George Strait at Gillette Stadium.
00:44React to getting that call.
00:46It was a little different than people might think.
00:49We had a sold-out show in Austin, Texas that same night.
00:52And contracts don't care whether you're opening for the king or not.
00:56But, so, it took about a week of litigation going back and forth to make sure that we weren't
00:59going to bail on those guys and get our show moved around.
01:02Then we accepted the offer, which was kind of tough to wait on.
01:05That's a little bit of suspense.
01:07Yeah.
01:08But, at the end of the day, I mean, we were committed to a show.
01:10I was like, well, if we can't do it, we can't do it.
01:12And so, I didn't let myself talk about it or think about it.
01:14And then when we finally got the call that we got it worked out, and I went, okay, now I'll
01:18accept it.
01:18This is awesome.
01:19This is awesome.
01:20I mean, you're going to have to get some even cuter outfits for the road now, too.
01:24Like, what are you going to be wearing?
01:26I've actually started working with a stylist, and she's been so helpful.
01:30She's wonderful.
01:31Her name is Megan Holdren.
01:32And so, she designed this, and then she went through my closet and made my life so much easier.
01:36Love it.
01:36Love it.
01:37Now, tell me a little bit how you're going to make 2019.
01:41I mean, 2019 is already going to be big for you, but even bigger than 2018 was.
01:44You know, it seems like for the last four years, we've had that next year is going to
01:48be the year.
01:48This year is going to be the year.
01:50We're really seeing the effects of the partnership that we've made with Warner Nashville.
01:55Although it was a 50-50 partnership, we got the full effect of a major label release with
02:00that number one album.
02:02And the single being placed on radio now, which is something we haven't had the opportunity
02:05to have in the last 10 years outside the Texas Regional Radio Report.
02:09Really seeing the effects, especially at our live shows.
02:11It's so many more new fans, and I'm sure to a lot of people, they're going to be like,
02:16yeah, this guy just came out yesterday, and that don't bother me.
02:18He's an up-and-comer.
02:19Come to the show.
02:20Hey, come to the show anyway.
02:21I don't care.
02:22I love it.
02:22I love it.
02:23And, you know, I have this weekend interviewed some country icons.
02:28Tracy Lawrence just name-dropped you.
02:29Yeah.
02:30I mean, how does that make you feel?
02:31Yes, he was...
02:32You have to tell me what he said.
02:33All right, now I have to tell you what he said.
02:34He said you were terrible.
02:36No, I'm just kidding.
02:37I'll tell you.
02:38Don't say my name.
02:39No, I asked him if he thinks that there are still that prime outlaw country tastes and
02:45notes in modern country, and he said Cody Johnson.
02:48Well, good.
02:48That's, I guess that's what you get when you hold out for 10 years.
02:52Yeah, and that sound is back, and it's here, and you have it.
02:56How do you kind of keep going and stick to your guns when you know that it might be different
03:01from what other people are putting out there?
03:03Well, because I don't know.
03:05I don't think I could sleep at night knowing that I was doing something that wasn't me.
03:10This music is not something that I came up with to get rich or famous.
03:14This is my soul.
03:15This is my heart.
03:15I've had this inside of me my entire life, so snap traps and rap are not my thing.
03:22Do I hate it?
03:23No, but if I tried to do it, it would look really stupid.
03:25I also think that if some of these artists tried to wear my hat, boots, and buckles,
03:29it wouldn't work either, so by the grace of God and the timing of the pendulum in country
03:33music, we just happened to be standing here when the door got opened.
03:37Thank you so much, Cody.
03:38Thank you so much.
03:39Wonderful talking to you.
03:40Oh, my gosh.
03:42Wonderful.
